    We were there in about 2019. We stayed further away . You would have to drive to town. Nice and secluded, dock to the clearest bright blue water, monkeys in the trees around the house. Only thing is the white sand is silt and u just sink in like a suction. You can’t walk in the water. You have to jump in or get on a raft.

    I totally understand the want to share these places because we've been to them as well. However.... Tulúm used to be small, quiet and inexpensive. Then social media happened. This video and others like it will only make things change there too. We live in Akumal and luckily this town pretty much CAN'T grow larger. However Bacalar, a place with very limited infrastructure, can't sustain this. A once unknown place can only get worse when we tell the damn world to go there. I know it's cool and nice to make some money on the Google ads money, but think about the people there who can't survive if prices increase and land starts getting bought up by Americans and others. Please just keep this in mind when making your videos.
    Show more of the people who make these places so special instead! It really is the best part about Mexico!

    • @LloydandMandy
      @LloydandMandy  Рік тому

      Thanks for the comment, just to help me understand, isn't the main export for places like this tourism? That's what was explained to us by the locals we met, so increasing tourism seems like it would be good thing? also if the price of land/houses increases isn't that good for local homeowners in the area? There house that was worth 50k is suddenly worth 150k.. genuinely wanting to know this, are you local or are you an immigrant?

    • @GoinPlaces
      @GoinPlaces Рік тому +1

      @@LloydandMandy Yes that's totally correct. About 80% of the GDP in this state IS tourism. Tourism isn't always what you'd think though. Majority of that tourism is to Cancun and Tulum to generally large resorts that are NOT owned by Mexicans. Tourism is, of course, good for the people who run and own small restaurants and the like, of which you mention in this video the lack of anything "chain" in Bacalar. Tulum used to be just like that. Now the first thing I see when I come into town is a Burger King and a KFC. Corporate 100% and also.... non-Mexico owned. Telling people to go to these wonderful places like Bacalar isn't a bad thing at all. But... telling people in the title of the video that it is the "next Tulum" isn't good. To keep these beautiful places charming, less is definitely more.
      Housing prices. Great topic. I'll use my own home of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. Last year it was the top housing market in the USA. Great right? Sure.... maybe for those selling a place in Southern California who sell a condo for $900,000 and buy a house in North Idaho for $300k, but what about those people on the cusp of finally being able to afford a place in the place THEY GREW UP that are now being forced out of their home towns because housing prices doubled? Now think about the Mexican people who make on Average, about $300-$500 US dollars a month. It is doing the very same thing. Yes... those fortunate enough own a decent home already, stand to make a lot if they sell, pricing out even more locals.
      Lastly... My wife and I do own a condo in Akumal. It's a lovely area with little to no room to expand and that's why we love it. It will NEVER turn into Tulum even though it's in the same municipality. We shop as much as we can in the small pueblos and frequent the local owned places as much as possible. And we furnish our home with local art and products. We were very fortunate to be able to buy a place here. That same place was probably almost HALF the price not even 10 years ago. We spend about 4 to 6 months a year at our second home and are going through the process of temporary residency.
      We are in the same boat as far as folks making videos for people to see. But keeping the idea in mind that these small places DESERVE to stay small and quaint should be kept in mind. Overgrowth is not good when talking about where your sewage goes, where your trash is discarded, and the folks that come here trying to be instagrammers or "digital nomads". Tulum used to be great. Now I couldn't care less about Tulum. It is a burden to get around.... and I didn't come here to pay exorbitant prices on things that should be MUCH less expensive. That's the hard truth.
      Mexico is unique and beautiful, and the people here make it that way. Spending your money here is awesome. But like I said earlier.... overgrowth is not good for this area. It can and eventually will have a drastic effect on the nature around you. Cenotes getting dirty with waste (which is where the aquifers for water are). Reefs dying (second largest reef next to the Great Barrier Reef is here) aren't good for the natural environment that's already so fragile. A good look at this was Half Moon Bay during 2020 when Akumal shut down to tourism. Within weeks the reef was flourishing. It has since diminished but still doing OK. It grew healthy and flourished because nobody was here.
      Of course, tourism IS the most important thing here. But if this place isn't here to visit, what's the point?
      We watched your video and it is VERY well done. Your content is awesome and portrayal of the area pretty much spot on! But.... using the click-bait title of "Mexico's Next Hot Spot" isn't necessarily good for these small areas to get FLOCKS of tourists at a time.
      We have friends that are native Mexican and some even Mayan and these are the things that they talk to US about. They love to have the possibilities for good jobs but also know how fragile their home is and don't want it to grow like Tulum has. Much less Cancun.
      BTW.... subscribing because you guys are doing great videos. We just watched and wanted to express a different side of things. Nothing more. I hope that helps shed a little light on my comment.

      That's because it's Mexico's 2nd largest lake, hence no big waves, salt water, stinky-brown seasonal seaweed, etc.

    I spent two weeks in Mahahual many years ago to do some diving off Banco Chinchorro..Bacalar is very close by...and would hate for it to get like Costa Maya with all the cruise ships coming in...just a matter of time before the cruise ships start offering excursions to Bacalar...another quiet town in beautiful Mexico to become a tourist trap with all the drunks/drugs etc....I have been traveling to Mexico for almost 50 years,way before Cancun/Playa/Tulum/Isla Mujeres/became a tourist destination...it's really sad what $$$ do to these places....

      It’s always a roll of the dice wherever you go, even in Asia/East Asia. Have to be careful to not use any tap water and never use ice in any of the drinks. It’s still difficult because the cooks still add water into some of the foods they make.

      Dick, one will get food borne illnesses anywhere where food is not kept in ideal, hygienic, colder, and such circumstances. One can get food poisoning anywhere, at any time. Also, drinking local water and asking for ice in drinks, where one can see big blocks of ice being dragged along dirtier grounds (such as in Indonesia), that they then crush to use as ice in drinks, is unwise, as well.
