- We are still months away from the regular season but in today's video I wanted to discuss a starting lineup that I feel like could truly compete with even the best teams in the league on any given night for the Detroit Pistons.
This channel is ran by a former NBA 2K streamer who has been a life long Detroit
Pistons fan who will be making videos about the team heading into the 2024-2025 NBA season under Trajan Langdon and a new coach.

i think your line up makes sense “best player” wise, and i also agree with the first 4 starters but i think they start ausar at the 3. they’ll probably then launch fonteccio and hardaway jr off the bench along with stew. it would be great if holland came out this year swinging but i think he’s gonna need some time . BTW-- love the channel and content KUTGW!!
IMHO, talent-wise, last years squad was better than 14wins. I also believe that intentional tanking was cause was reason for the 14win season. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the Pistons challenged for the 8th seed in the playoffs

You got it spot on my friend. The only and I mean only thing I ask fans to watch out for is the return of Stew to the starting lineup. JB may run it back with Stew who can shoot the 3 with Duren next to Harris. I love Fontecchio getting his dime with some of that remaining cap space and starting him at SF makes all the sense but it appears they maybe looking for a SF or PF that can 3 & D.
Newer Pistons fan here and as weird as it sounds, this team excites me more than my main team (Suns) and I think the Pistons have a shot at being top ten in the east this year

My Starting Lineup Thoughts: (Start of Season)
Cade, Ivey, Ausar, Tobias, Duren
Bench:
Sasser, THJ, Ron, Tech, Stew
I think that will also be the projected lineup. Langdon said Ron & Ausar aren't playable simultaneously right now so one will start while the other be a rotation asset.

Me I just want a 70+ game season from Cade!
I'd like Ausar to focus on being a role player ala Dennis Rodman/Ben Wallace. Focus on Defense 1st, rebounding and hitting the glass on both ends and be opportunistic offensively through hitting the offensive glass, transitional baskets, etc. Instead of looking to score in the half court, be the 4th or 5th option IF called upon. Just be the slasher or hitting the glass for put backs, etc. We have enough offensive guys to where he doesn't necessarily need to be looking for his shots in the half court. There will be plenty of trash to take out and he will be a monster as well as holland in the transition game.
I could see stewart growing into a naz ried type role off the bench at the 5.

I do think that great teams are built on great defense, but I don't think that's the approach that the Pistons should take to start the season. The priority should be to establish Cade offensively by playing guys that the defense has to cover, like Harris and Fonteccio, and moving the ball to the open guy. Once you establish the ability to score, then move onto improving the defense. The defense first approach didn't work for Monty. I just think being able to score would lift the team's morale, and then there would be buy-in on defense. So, yes, I agree with your starting line up.
Did pistons really address their need /weakness this offseason? Add shooting? Add MORE vets? Pick & trim their young core?
Are THJ & Tobias really culture setters?

Best part is whenever we need a small forward to come off the bench we have FIVE OF THEM! And no real backup center or power forward. And a decision to make on who gets minutes as backup pg. At least our shooting guard position is established.

Cade, Ivey, Holland, Stew, Duren. But again we need the front court three to hit the outside shot, however with the scoring and rebounding and potential Defense in the paint, it's worth seeing if they can improve their outside shot.

Although idk if Stew can actually play five. Opponents flambéd our defense when he was at the five and teams don't actually care enough about him as a shooter to take their big out of the paint. We still need a real back up five
Or maybe get Dario Saric and play them together. Then just have Saric play up to stop PnR and use Stew and Holland as the low man. (Like Denver does.)
Offensively, Saric can do all the five out stuff and you create a mini Sixers off the bench with Ivey in the Maxey role and Holland in the Oubre role. (I think Sasser is probably the odd man out.)
Although running two different offenses (and defenses) for the starters and bench is a lot for a young team. That would require an insane level of coaching

Both Cade and Ivey had a 17% turnover rate as rookies. (Cade was 14.1 to 14.7 last year.) Oladipo was 19%, Wall was 19%, Russ was 18%, Fix was 16%, Ja was 17%, Trae was 18%
Ivey's turnover rate is perfectly normal for his experience level. It will get better as he ages. Typically it levels out between years 3-5
It's very important to attack a defense in multiple ways because NBA players are very intelligent. If you do the same thing over and over they will stop it pretty easily.
Think about it like a pitcher. Even if he has a plus fastball and curve he's still going to mix in his cutter, slider and changeup to keep the better off balance vs just throwing two pitches.
THAT is why you take the ball out of Cade's hands.
Lowering turnovers isn't always a good thing either. It's like interceptions in football. There is an appropriate amount of risk a player needs to take.
Wall and Westbrook are perfect examples of high turnover guys their entire career but they put so much pressure on the defense with their ability to get to the rim that they acted more as loss leaders. _They_ were inefficient but they got everyone else easier shots because of all the attention they attracted

Pistons need a shooting big to complete this roster and a shooting guard. But that's where I stand as of now
Cade and Hardaway start the backcourt; Duren as center. I agree with your two forwards. Sasser at the point as backup with Ivey at the 2 as backup…if he’s not traded.
The whole roster looks nice in terms of FG% 3% and FT% besides 3 glaring numbers. Ausar 18.6% from 3. Ausar 59.7% from FT and Ron Holland 24% from 3. If you limit those two from 3 and Ausar from playing much at all the Pistons could shoot 37%+ from 3 and 80%+ from FT. And this is not even considering Fred Vinson helping out the guys who are capable of shooting better which is pretty much everybody besides the no hoper Ausar Thompson.

Trade Jaden Ivey for rim a protecting big. This rotation gives Cade the best spacing & still gives the young players a chance to develop.
It’s tough because then you have Holland and Ausar on the bench. Ausar starting over Ivey I think is a good option with Ivey THJ Holland and Stew off the bench.

Stew has to start or else you're tanking, just because Duren is so much worse than Stew.

i disagree slightly with your point @ the 3:00 mark, we had Jeremy Grant and briefly Saddiq Bey in that 4 spot that can space the floor but the problem at that time we was still starting Stew at the 5 who was clearly undersized

I'd like to see if Ivey can be the two for us too, and if he can't, we need to see if Sasser is that guy. I like Ausar as first man off the bench, and also inserted for defensive reasons. The team is pretty much at the lowest they can be right now, so there really is nowhere to go but up. Fontechhio would be a good fifth, but also would not be surprised if Holland gets a shot, considering we used our number five pick on him. However, I'd like to see Holland and Klintman get PT, but coming off the bench in their rookie years. I think we should have a competitive starting five that should be fun to watch. Can't wait!

Possibly! $26 million in cap left for next year as of now. Sounds like they might use the remaining cap space to take on a bad contract from another team and gain draft picks while doing so though.

Ausar is more of a PF than Holland. Holland can play SG.
Should be 37 to 45 wins, because THIS teams roster is NOT set; we have $$$$$$$ cap money to use, and Langdon ain't done YET. (Not by long shot.) 😉

But I haven’t really landed on which one I would prefer yet. If I absolutely had to pick one right now I’d go with the first, but I might still change my mind.

Yeah, probably. We’ll see with Bobi Klintman, he played real minutes in the NBL last year so he might be able to contribute.
I don’t think Bickerstaff will play all of those guys at once though often. Think it is wise to keep either Ivey or Cade on the floor at all times and stagger their minutes, even if they both start. Never rest them together.

2024 Rebuild Summary:
Simone vs Bojan - Slight upgrade defensively but worse shooting
THJ vs Alec Burks - Slight upgrade but not very much
Tobias - Significant upgrade in the rotation
Starting Lineup - Cade, THJ, Simone, Tobias, Duren
Bench Lineup - Sasser, Ivey, Holland, Ausar, Stew.
Needs: Backup PG, Defensive Center.
Primary concern - keeping everyone healthy. Just this should get us to 20+ wins.
I can't see THJ starting over Ivey.
I think Ausar can play on ball some for the 2nd unit. It would help negate his lack of shooting too so i agree that he come off the bench

Ausar at the 2 is ridiculous. He should be playing more PF and SF at this point in his career until he becomes a better shooter.
I would prefer Ausar and Fontecio play together the most. If that means Ausar starts or comes off the bench I don't know but you play Ausar at times with Fontecio and sometimes with Tobias. I think you play Ron Holland with Tobias and even at SG at times. Ausar is more of a true forward (PF/SF) I think Ron Holland is more of a true wing with guard skills.

With the addition of Malik Beasley, I think the lineup should be: Cade, Beasley, because he's a proven knock down 3pt shooter who doesn't need the ball to be effective, plus he plays defense. Then you have Fontecheo at the 3 and Harris at the 4. Due to Duren being the only center on the team, he has to be the 5. But if we don,t get a defensive shot blocker, we'll be right back in the same boat as last year and will have to out score teams to win. Should have drafted Clingan to hold down the paint area because all of the free agents that we signed, we still would have gotten them now. We needed to focus on defense because defense wins championships. Just look at the Bad Boys and the Going to Work Piston teams.
Stew is better than Duren; Duren is not the only center on the team; Stew should start over Duren.
(Duren is a fucking horrible dogshit defender, you can't say they should be building the team around defense whilst also saying Duren should start!)

I love your enthusiasm but I would pump the brakes. JB Bickerstaff is a decent coach. He’s not a great coach. His practices are. He divided the room in Cleveland that is why he got fired. Also you look at his record from Cleveland and that’s because they won 19 straight in the tail end of the first half. Look at his second half record as a coach. It’s putrid. They often limp into the playoffs if they make the playoffs and then collapse.
His offensive playsets are very limited. It’s usually one play and if that doesn’t work bring it back out and run iso. He never really was able to manage Mobley and Allen on the court at the same time. He couldn’t handle the dynamic between Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland.
Let’s pump the brakes. You’re getting a developmental coach a decent developmental coach but I wouldn’t be thinking grand schemes when he’s not that good

Tobias will very likely start but I'm really hoping this is an Iguodala situation where he sets an example of sacrifice that carries through the team
And Fontecchio makes more sense with Cade, Ivey, Ausar, Duren than Tobi anyway because he's a better shooter, connective playmaker and defender
Whereas Tobi's scoring and especially creation ability is much more valuable against bench units. Ideally he and Ivey can lead one of the league's better bench brigades which can prop up a middling starting group.
Tech and Ausar are guys who are better with Cade because of how they play. They cut and move and understand the beautiful game elements of basketball. Playing your high IQ guys together is always smart
The one interesting thing about the Tech-Tobias pairing is it forces Ivey to be the primary on ball defender and his competitiveness will force him to be a better, more disciplined defender

I don't think he's as stubborn as someone like Westbrook where he will keep doing it though. Most players grow out of it and eventually learn how to trust their teammates

Nikola Jokic has the highest IQ in the league and he can stay in front of a phone booth. On ball defense is 80% athletic ability, not IQ, and Ivey has that in spades.

Yes, the _best_ on ball defenders combine elite athletic ability _with_ high IQ and great technique but someone like Kelly Oubre is a better on ball defender than late career Chris Paul because -- and only because -- his athletic tools are so much greater

Ausar and Holland can play together if you surround them with shooters - Sasser, THJ, Steward. I predict that one of them will earn a starting spot by mid-season.
Holland had a small sample size last year and is over 75% from FT so he has a shot to be a good shooter. Ausar on the other hand worked basketball as his job for 3 years straight and shot 18.6% from 3 and 59.7% from FT. To be that bad when you work 24/7 basketball for 3 years means even Fred Vinson is unlikely to be able to improve that disaster. If they can ever play together it will be because Ron Holland becomes very legit and with never be because Ausar becomes very legit.

I think they should sign Dario Saric to be the back up center. Trade Stewart to the Hornets in a Sturm and trade for Miles Bridges. Run a starting lineup of Cade , Ivey, Bridges, Harris, and Duren. Bench of Sasser, THJ, Fontecchio, Ausar, Holland, and Saric.

Bring in Bol Bol again and keep him this time. Sign him before Phoenix signs him. He will give you stretch 5 range and defense. I know he can play if given the chance. Just ask Wembanyama last year. Phoenix matched him up against Wembanyama, and he outplayed him in all phases of the game. Bol has just happened to be on championship teams who don't let him play. The only time he got playing time was with Orlando.
