- Nearly 13 years ago, the wrestling world was rocked by the tragedy involving Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy and son Daniel. But what led Benoit to do what he did and, in the process, tarnish one of wrestling's greatest legacies? On the season two premiere of Vice's Dark Side Of The Ring series, the creators explore that question, the friendship between Benoit and Eddie Guerrero, and information that I wasn't even aware of previously. Chris Jericho put it even better in one of his books. Something along the lines of Chris Benoit lived as a great man and an incredible performer. One of the absolute best. But he died a monster. He died a coward that took the lives of his wife and child.

Ethan Wilkins watching the documentary I realize something. A lot of people gave him flack for always saying he wanted to follow in his dad‘s footsteps but, never doing it, after watching the documentary The documentary I can easily see why it’s taking so long for him to fully commit to joining the business.
The scene where David breaks down and Nancy's siater walks into frame and hugs him. That hit me.

Its like they said: If he would have killed himself: That would have been tragic.... but also killing his wife and his son, which never had a choice in all of this? Thats unforgiveable.
I just never understood why it had anything to do with his son. The suicide is one thing, then his wife. Horrible but most murderers are over broken relationships. The. The son on top of it. He either had a complete mental collapse that night, or wrestlers aren’t letting us know the whole truth because this doesn’t come out of nowhere

When David said he and his little brother wanted to be tag team champs, I seriously had to stop the show and cry for a few minutes. That one was too much for me

My little brother killed himself in 2013. We were big wrestling fans. We had our own federation with our wrestling toys when we’re were young. Even went to Wrestlemania 23. We always said we would be tag team champions. So this cut deep.

The fact that people took their frustrations with Benoit on his surviving family members was awful, people should've been supporting them instead of turning their backs on them
Agreed its even more aggravating that WWE ignored Nancy and Chris's families.
Paul Phoenix They ignored the families and didn’t help them because they were too busy getting caught up saving their own ass to care. If Vince had to do it again I bet you he would have never brought Benoit in to perform in the WWE because of all the negative publicity the double murder-suicide brought to the company. Deep down he probably has resentment toward the man, almost brought down his own organization because of the personal demons Benoit had. But Benoit changed the way they conducted business, no more chair shots to the head, concussions are taken way more serious, sad that Benoit and Guerrero basically had to die for things to change in terms of wellness policy and health concerns for superstars.
Chavo said on Vice's UA-cam channel, he will get assholes on Twitter tweeting him dogs are in the enclosed pool area which is the text he got from Chris that day.
I think i can understand why they didn't want help. But its still dumb. Just because the family told JR he wasn't welcomed when he went to the funeral. Doesn't mean like oh they don't need your help. Like push to help them and if they refuse then sure there's nothing you can do. I mean one of the reasons that led to this was the BS wellness program they had. Not gonna blame WWE fully for Beniot killing his wife and son because at the end of the day. He pulled the trigger on that decision, he was the one who decided to take steroids, and based on what Vickie said that he was good hiding what he was feeling when he was at work.
This tragedy did have something good come out of it. Probaly for sports in general when it comes to testing their athletes.
@@pablofabela9004 Nancy's side i think it's possible, they decided not to contact any further after what happened at the funeral. Jim Ross might've went back and told Vince, they hate them and don't want to hear from them. no reason they shouldn't have checked on Benoit's other kids, David and i think he has a sister too.
One of the things that most stuck out to me while watching was when Randazzo said "Benoit had decided from a young age that he was going to do whatever it took to be a pro wrestler. His story was always going to have a tragic ending."
I was horrified when they talked about how Harley Race told other wrestlers not to use the diving headbutt move because of the damage this cause to your spinal cord, and he invented the move. Then Dynamite Kid used the same move and ends up in a wheelchair, then Benoit uses the move and ruined his brain. Now Daniel Bryan is using this move despite recovering from neck surgery.
I hope other wrestling promotions will start banning that move because of the damage this does to your head and spine.
Shibata was forced to retire after an unprotected headbutt on Okada. It was not a flying headbutt but it was still horrible to watch. Headbutts should be banned.
"Before Michael Jackson, we had Chris Benoit.." is a phrase I never thought I would hear. But here we are in 2020 and the media hasn't learned anything. at all.

Great TW They would’ve scaled down drastically. ECW would’ve been ended, a large chunk of the roster would’ve been fired, the remaining would’ve been pressured into taking pay cuts, and they’d run shows in smaller venues.

The part where he broke down got me hard, felt like we were all David in that moment. Hope his life is a gonna be a happy one, he deserves it.

I didn't know that Sullivan allegedly abused Nancy. I also did not know that Benoit broke Nancy's back.
When Julie Malenko spoke about what Nancy must've felt in her final moments I lost it. I knew the attack was savage. I didn't know he broke her back.
It was a heartbreaking watch.
That part where her sister said Kevin Sullivan physically abused her is not true at all because Kevin even said it himself in a shoot interview that that didn't happen
according to Mike Graham who lied at times, but his claim was Nancy could be violent too. he mentioned a police report, that Nancy stabbed Kevin and he dropped charges. but the officer was critical, he allegedly said few inches closer and she would've killed him.
This is very painful, and this so sad ! To kill himself is one thing , but to kill his wife and his son , that is the most unforgiving and unforgettable ever!!

Eerie true story: I never saw all of Benoit's tribute show. It was interrupted by a weirdly selective power outage on a night where there was no storm, no surge, just boom - no electricity until the next day. And only for a few blocks; the rest of town was OK.
That is an eerie story. Maybe that was a sign of some kind.

The moment with William Regal was quite something. I never really thought that hard about what he said during that special, but after Chris mentioned it, it really dawns on you how different those sort of words are from everyone else’s on the special. Can’t, believe what sort of tales Regal heard that Benoit did.
I suspect that regal knew or at the very least suspected almost immediately that it wasn't what everyone else thought it was and had to choose his words extremely carefully as to not let on that he suspected it was something much worse and much more evil that it seemed.
This was one of the best wrestling documentaries I've ever seen. Brought back a lot of memories and also brought light many things I never knew. I'm also one of those people who believe he should never be in the hall of fame. He's one of my favorite wrestlers ever, but it just can't happen, nor should it.
I do think Nancy should be though, her career does deserve praise.
Chris can still be remembered by his peers anyway as you pretty much see mini tributes to his work in tons of wrestlers these days.

I never knew how deep a connection Benoit and Eddie had ....I knew they were best and close but this was something else
I've said this plenty of times since I watched it....
Nancy was his wife, the mother of his kids, the woman he loved.
But Eddie Guerrero was his soulmate. Not in sense of they were in love with each other or had any feelings like that in anyway, but in a sense of two people who had a connection deeper than family almost.
It was almost like Benoit loved Eddie more than his family.
I think chavo said whatever Chris Benoit was dealing with he could handle it as long as Eddie was around to see him through.
Eddie was his lifeline.
And the way he killed Nancy.......my god......one of the things I always admired about Benoit was the way he applied the crosssface and his facial expressions when he applied it. He looked like he was really trying to snap someone's neck and his facial expressions just sold it.
And all I could think of was when they said how he killed Nancy was.....was that his facial expression when he killed her.
The fed his son xanax and suffocated him....
Chris Benoit may not have been born a monster,but in the end he died as one.

Thing is that people have been killed over stuff like this. Hell there's even been public shootings for stuff like this. You can't excuse what people did for stuff like that. I know David wants to see his dad get inducted but I don't think it will and he should not be. You can't seperate his personal life and ring work. Watching the documentary, when David said how he and Daniel wanted to be the Tag Team champions. That part broke me.
Solomonster you nailed it, once he murdered his son, its unforgivable and unforgettable. Sad documentary.
I would go one further and say that once he did what he did to Nancy, he could never be forgiven. David is right in that Nancy should be remembered and honored.
And it ruins a hall of fame status
I thought VICE did a great job breaking the story into two separate parts. I really learned a lot about Benoit's personal life before the murders. Plus, the influence of Eddie Guerrero and his unexpected death played a major role in Benoit's life. Unfortunately, this will never excuse Benoit's decision to kill his wife and son. Jericho said it best; Benoit nearly destroyed the entire wrestling industry with his decision. I feel for David, he is living through the sins of his father. I was one of those people as kid who wanted to see Benoit in the HOF, but as an adult I have a whole new perspective. He should never be in the hall of fame for his crimes.
When you listen to entire weekend of the murders, there's no excuses for his actions. Like Paul Heyman said, one person had the choice to die, the other two did not have a choice. Enough said.

I was at the Raw after Eddie’s death in Minneapolis. I was 12 years old. And goddamn, literally everyone in the arena was crying. It was an emotional night.

Donzel Hawkins Eddie died in the bathroom of his hotel room. Chavo came into the hotel and saw Eddie faced down on the bathroom floor. Chavo rested Eddie in his arms as Eddie was gargling. He died in Chavo’s arm.

I never heard of Nancy Grace until my former roomie told me how she calmed Owen Hart died from steroids. Yeah, it seems to me that it was more the fall from heights and sudden impact with the ring that killed him, not steroids, so she just lost all credibility with me upon first hearing of her. So, your name for her, Nancy Disgrace, seems fitting with me.

Just like David Benoit said it i too believe the person that committed the awful crime isn't the same Chris benoit who everyone knew and loved.
I've always felt I chose to acknowledge who he was, not what he did in his final days. He wouldn't be one of my favorites of all time if I didn't. I can't forget what he did, it was extremely wrong and I'm not justifying a murderer, but I can't bring myself to hate him for it, considering the circumstances. Just let him rest.
But everyone really needs to apologize to both Sandra Toffoloni and David Benoit for what they were both put through. Two wrongs doesn't make a right.
This made me worry for Daniel Bryan
On Benoit: the murders I never fully got behind the whole "he's evil incarnate" mantra, and I never thought the blacklisting of his name was 100% fair or right minded. People can have mental health issues, drug abuse, depression, PTSD and the like and go on to do truly heinous acts but we understand they weren't in their right mind, so they aren't looked at like true premeditated murderers. Doesn't make the wife and son any less of victims in the matter, but it's a different context. He didn't do this in a vacuum, he didn't do this for insurance money, he wasn't in his right mind, and so (just like soldiers who have PTSD and kill their family, or abused women who go crazy and kill their kids, etc.)
(It's the added element of Chris being a domestic abuser that changes my mind somewhat, because it suggests he was a real prick before the mental breakdown)
It was mainly that Vince didn't want the layers to be peeled back: what was his work schedule, what was the culture, what was his physical and mental health, does the company offer health care, and was there a drug culture backstage that contributed to this tragedy? In other words, anything that puts a fair but harsh spotlight on the company, ESP as it relates to steroids, can't have that!! Better to just say the man is pure evil and be done with it. And the public just goes with that because "hey he must be evil right, that's it nothing more to see! nothing more to think about!" The easy answer is often the popular one, but that don't always make it right folks! You bring up brain trauma and drugs and mental health and the culture, and staunch Vince/WWE stans, corporate shills, and other unreasonable people can't handle it, they gotta shut all that down. Unfortunately, people like the Solomonster kida fall into this category. Very sad.
The HOF? A fucking joke regardless IDGAF if the man goes into Vince's fake hall of favorites, that's irrelevant.
I believe if he would’ve listen to his wife after Eddie died he should’ve retired or left the business for quite some time. I think it would’ve saved his life
LakeErie heartthrob his heart was still fucked up from all those steroids he took. He wasn’t gonna last much longer, would have probably suffered a similar fate to what Eddie had. Not saying that fate was a good one, Eddie is actually my favorite wrestler. But the drugs, the steroids, the abuse to the body comes back to haunt most wrestlers that’s why they die young unfortunately.
I'm going to go the opposite, i think it would've happened sooner had he retired.

I feel Chris’ life was doomed to end in tragedy, as he would have died of heart failure in 10 months according to the autopsy. If he died that way, it would be a tragedy, but what he did is unforgivable imo.
The way Chris Benoit grieved strongly suggested they had some sort of romantic relationship. I've had friends die. Never would I think of clutching their pillows and crying while laying where they laid. That is something that married spouses do. No one ever brings this fact or questions their relationship being more than just friendship when all the signs are there. I guess they just won their two Heroes to remain Super Macho when that's clearly is not the case at all.
Some people said Eddie wasn't the same when his partner and best friend Love Machine Art Barr passed in 1994. Not really sure.

As I did then, I still have this stance of separating the artist from their work... The great majority of us don't know shit about Benoit personally, nobody's condoning murder... All we know is his professional career, as a wrestler, one of the absolute greats... Separately, that can be appreciated, nobody's a terrible person for still enjoying one of his matches... Chris Benoit gets no benefit, he's dead, but his son shouldn't be punished... Sins of the father definitely should not go on to the son, obviously.🤷♂️

I really felt for David Benoit.
Not only did he lose his family.
He was basically blackballed from pro-wrestling through no fault of his own.
However...
Regarding his desire to follow in his father's footsteps in the ring.
I believe he should leave that particular aspect of his life in the past.
Forget pro-wrestling altogether.
For the foreseeable future.
He should just stay in that good paying, stable job in the Canadian oilfields and make a good life of it.
I think that Chris Benoit first killed his wife which was a combined effect of steroid rage and CTE. Concussions are no joke. And the statement "the body goes into autopilot" is so true. Got a concussion while working on a truck, finished the job, drove the truck to verify the repair, but had no recollection of it after I parked the truck and walked back into the shop.

I thought the Eddie part was brilliant, but almost as difficult to hear about, especially since he had pretty much cleaned himself up. I think doing a separate one on Eddie would be a great idea.
When Vickie started crying for the first time in the doc, I had to pause it and step away from my laptop. This will go on for several times while watching. It is extremely tough to get through but it is a well-made doc and it definitely help shed light on what led to this.
It was tough to watch but I respect Chris Jericho for what he did for David and Nancy's sister. He showed them more compassion than the bloody WWE.
This is I have trouble watching Benoit matches. Yes I know Chris was not in his right mind but he still murdered his family. That is something that can never be forgotten or forgiven.
One thing I liked about this documentary was the focus on Nancy. Inside and outside the ring, Nancy was a great woman who loved her family and always looked out for others. She does not get enough credit and that is a shame.

Benoit clearly had brain damage, the steroids, alcohol issues, and had dealt with a lot of personal loss. And from all accounts, Nancy was not the type to just sit and be quiet, she had a habit of telling Chris how she felt. Putting all that into account, this was bound to happen. It's even more tragic that Daniel was killed also. Domestic violence, unfortunately, happens a lot in marriages. But to kill a child as well, no reason for that.
Also I'm sure Daniel heard his mother's screams. Maybe Xanax was also to calm his hysteria as he and his mother were inseparable. So sad.

Benoit snapped, he got to that point after probably being confronted by nancy over it and went into that place psychopaths go to when they have that moment where they kill in passion.
Not a sociopath, but his brain damage caused it, the images and videos of daniel and david got me hard tho. Damn and Vickie talking about nancy being there for her put me back into that place i was when my dad died and my mom broke down.

I learned a lot about the Sullivan nancy stuff i didn't know about. All the interviews I've seen with him where it was brought up he always says what people don't know is that me and nancy were separated for months before they got together. Of course he's not going to admit to beating his wife. I saw my mother go through that when i was young and those kinds of men never would take any responsibility. And i feel bad for David. He gets painted like he was the one who murdered people when he was a kid who lost a father and brother. He should be able to live his life in whatever he wants to do without people having to bring this up. But as i saw with a jake the snake tweet this morning people are terrible especially online when they can say horrible things anonymously like the cowards they are. Great vid as usual.

Watching this episode of DSOTR gave me an insight into Benoit I didn’t have beforehand: the murder-suicide is a dark summation of his entire life. He gave his life entirely to pro wrestling and it took everything he had, including his sanity. He’s still responsible for the choices he made, but you can see a through line to the tragic end result.
I felt so bad for david watching this. Poor kid had his world upended and his hero become a villain in the eyes of most ppl. I hope ppl understand none of this is his fault and dont vilify him for his opinions. It was his dad and I can understand his feelings on the matter.

Benoit doesn't belongs in the Hall Of Fame. But you can't ignore his existence and what he done in the ring. Meaning you speak of him present tense when you do rewinds. The NFL does this perfectly with OJ Simpson, were they acknowledge him and they still speak positive of his career but not him.

Its possible that he was in a blackout state due to drugs and alcohol when he killed his wife. They had been partying when it happened. I don't understand why he killed his son and stayed in the house for 3 days with the bodies
What’s crazy is Solomon recorded this three years ago so now it’s been 16 years and I run a NWA/WCW tribute page on Facebook and this guy from this Crispin Wall tribute page came in made a post on my page asking all of us to sign a petition, so Chris can go in the Hall of Fame in 2025.
I can honestly say after going to his page which there was like a couple thousand people that were member of his page that I don’t think any of them has ever had children. If you have a wife or girlfriend, and she gives birth to a child you and her made together And the first time you hold that child in look into its eyes I think they would wake up and realize that no someone that would take this life that they created an innocent life and do what Chris did. You cannot put that man in the Hall of Fame. There would be so much blowback that would probablydestroy WWE if they ever did that. Those 2000 people just don’t realize that the millions of people that would just boycott WWE forever. I don’t know why there are people steal today in 2024 that think Chris should be in the Hall of Fame.

There is an upside at the very end of it. It is depressing as shit, but the ending is very good and uplifting.

This documentary truly broke me. Eddie and Chris were both my favorite wrestlers when I was a kid and when they both died I stopped watching wrestling for a couple of years. It took me a while before I could start watching it again. On a side note, Chris Benoit should never and will never go into the Hall of Fame

Back in the early '00's leslie neilson was asked about what he thought should be done to edit the naked gun movies in order to remove OJ from them and his response was:
"it was utterly vile and evil what he did but I see no reason to edit him out of the movies, one must understand that doing such a thing is foolish and pointless because you can't erase the fact that he was there on set when the films were made.
In the end it is up too the studio that owns those films to make that decision but I think a better choice would be too either give the royalty proceeds he would get from them too his children or the families of his victims".
In the edn they decided not to edit him out of the movies and because of the lawsuit that was brought against him by the recitatives of his victims that royalty money ended up going nicole's family (so it probably ended up with his kids).
Chris killing nancy was despicable, but the moment he made the choice to intentionally kill his seven year old son too eliminate a witness (it wasn't a "mercy killing" ) is when he became lucifer in human flesh.
I firmly believe that had he not taken his life chris would be sitting on gerogia's death row awaiting his date with the needle for daniel's murder and that's why he offed himself.
He'd lived there long enough to know that no jury anywhere in the state would take pity on a double murderer especially if one of the victims was his own child and he also knew that no mitigating circumstances testimony he presented would save him from at least one death sentence so he knew there was no way out for him other than suicide.
And before anyone parrots: "he had CTE" I will say this:
Racing drivers suffer from much more intense and violently severe concussions from sudden deceleration during accidents (sometimes as hard as 250 G's) that literally scramble their brains multiple times yet the only racing driver I can think of who intentionally killed people was a guy who turned out to actually be a serial killer that killed at least 12 people in three different countries.

I didn’t understand why you brought up Benoit’s last photo at his doctors office but now I think I might have figured something out. If you look at the transcripts from the cell phone texts between Chris and Nancy, Nancy was getting fed up with Chris using steroids because it was making him temperamental and aggressive. When they allegedly had their argument the Friday before the murders, I think it was because of Chris’ trip to Phil Astin’s (Benoit’s person doctor) office to obtain more steroids and she probably went off on him and in my eyes would be the initial spark that would cause this horrific tragedy. This is all speculation on my end and I could be wrong but it was something that came to my mind when you brought it up.
I love Benoit but yeah what he did will never get him in the hall of fame!!
Chris Benoit and his family's deaths created the PG Era as much I hate to say it, he's the reason why the WWE started toning down the violence on the show without the chair shots to the head, no blood and no extremely dangerous stunts. I know most of you guys hate the current product and prefer the hardcore violence but if the WWE continued to do what it was doing before the Benoit tragedy, then more of these murder suicide incidents would've happened and it would've ran them out of business permanently. So as much as I hate what Benoit did, I can at least understand why the WWE chose to do what they're doing now to prevent more of these wrestlers killing people and themselves because of years of undetected brain damage but it's a shame 3 people had to die in order for it to happen.
Dark Side of the Ring came at the perfect time. It really is the only "must watch" TV for me atm.
I'd say probably Eddie's death hit me the hardest out of those 2 just because I did meet him 1 time. It was like 2004 so I was like 13 at the time and it was an autograph signing and even though he was defending the WWE title at the Bash like the next day he still stayed and signed autographs for everybody even though it took like an additional 2 or 3 hours.
