At some point, almost every gamer on the planet has thought to themselves, “what the hell is Vsync?”
Depending on the game there can be loads of different graphical settings. But Vsync is one that’s always there.
But what the hell does it actually do and should you have yours on or off?

Its a surprise he didn't mention another downside of V-sync, a small delay between input and action. Since V-Sync attempts to synchronize the frames so they don't appear split, it does so by waiting a very small amount of time to display a correct, tear-less image, and that delay can be felt for fast games.
If you want responsiveness, for competitive games, turn it off. Better to have a visual annoyance than be a few frames in the past, screwing up your inputs

V-sync is honestly criminally underrated, the input lag doesn't even matter if you enable AMD Anti-Lag/Nvidia Reflex, also the "unnecessary cap" is very necessary since it'll cap the FPS to your monitor's refresh rate, since tearing occurs when getting more frames than your monitor can have, you get rid of tearing, akd the real unnecessary is that framerate and you won't even see and just stresses your PC unnecesarily, plus, limiting the framerate to the max your monitor offers also gives you performance headroom to crank up settings a bit more

@@dtpg5713dude… the point of V-Sync is so that when your running a 65 htz refresh rate on your monitor and a 3070 Ti that can get you over 140 constant fps they practically link and ur gpu caps at the refresh rate of your monitor to reduce unnecesary stress on the gpu. Which in turn results in less screen tearing and a smoother experience.

    • @crapyguy1234

Exactly, just to let you all know. When you enable vsync at a graphics API level, you actually tell the graphics drivers to stall the render thread when presenting a frame. This allows the thread to not waste extra resources on the cpu and gpu, opening more cycles for other tasks to be done. If the game is heavily physics based, this could be super helpful depending on how much of it is done on the CPU. Sorry got a little 🤓 face there.

I find it interesting that no one can give a simple tutorial how to completey remove screen tearing without using vsync. And I'm beginning to realize they either ignore the stuttering or weird inconsistent visual flow of frames and input latency that always comes when vsync is off. I'm yet to get a consistent gameplay like a ps5 with gsync off or be shown how to do so.

You will always need vsync but never turn it on via in-game settings, only through your PC's Nvidia control panel of that specific game. Everything you said about RTSS is also correct, and it does work. I also finally ordered in my books the perfect gaming monitor. The LG UltraGear QHD IPS 1ms HDR 400, NVIDIA G-SYNC, and AMD FreeSync, 165Hz. So there isn't any way my games shouldn't run smooth now 😁🙏🏾

V-sync, today, is good enough to avoid screen tearing AND cap frames for a consistency on frame times.
If you want to avoid screen tearing and having v sync off, you must produce double the frames of your refresh rate minimum consistently or more (for example, 60hz = 120fps or more at all times). Only then you will feel your game buttery smooth and with no screen tear.
Otherwise you will suffer from either stuttering or screen tearing.

"unnecessarily cap your fps" - this capping of fps is actually a good thing. if you're getting 83 fps on a 60 hz monitor, those extra frames are just wasted, and the cpu also has less time to do things. uncapped is only really useful for benchmarking, and possibly slightly lower latency. your pc will also run alot quieter with vsync on.
even if your game is running at ~2000fps on a 144hz monitor, your monitor is still running at exactly 144fps

Resident evil 2 on ultra settings maxed out everything and UNCAPPED is smooth and responsive however the gpu temp reaches 77c amd the fans are running extra loud. Turning it off reduced the temp by a whole 16c and noise drastically reduced but at the cost of minimal imput lag.

It’s a type of v-sync. There’s double buffering and triple buffering.
Might wanna research because I know I’m not 100% confident but double buffering steps down the frame rate into even multiples of your refresh rate. Example if you play on 60Hz and you can’t hit 60 FPS, the game drops down to 30 FPS.
Triple buffering is supposed to alleviate this issue so it’s more preferred than double buffering.

My refresh rate isn’t too good but I know I just need to put games at 60fps which is what I do since when it’s higher even with a better monitor I don’t notice a difference

  • @remipennel121

ALSO, and most NOTABLY for me, V-sync adds input delay and, in some games where the implementation isn’t great, it can make the experience feel very sluggish

  • @AsKnownAsLucy
    @AsKnownAsLucy 6 місяців тому

Vsync should be used together with freesync/gsync. Vsync works like a frametime compensator in the Freesync range. Lock ur fps at 3p below your monitors refresh rate.
Voila! You have no tearing, no stuttering and no added input delay from vsync

So if I have a 144hz monitor, and am getting 200fps should I have V-Sync on since I won't be able to get over 144hz anyways?

  • @quocdathuynhle
    @quocdathuynhle 5 місяців тому

u should use v sync when: gsync or freesync enabled, then cap ur fps under refesh rate of ur mornitor ( 138~144hz, 224~ 240hz). Now you have the best smooth gaming experience without any input lag added (tech comfirmed). good luck!

Have had an OLED with 240hz and almost always never use this unless the game has a frame cap under my frame rate then I'll disable vsync in GPU control panel and then enable in game and you will get frame unlock without the additional latency involved with syncing

  • @Hostile2430

I keep vsync on because 60 FPS is good enough for me and i often get bottleneck at unlocked frame rate.
There is little difference between Playing at 60 and say 70-80 i would rather sacrifice few frames and increase some graphical settings to make game look pretty.
But for competitive shooters like CS2 its best to turn it off

  • @berkeyegen

But i have the smoothest gameplay in RDR 2 when i cap my FPS 60 with VSync On. If i uncap my fps i get 100 constantly but during fights or city light scenes i get dramatic 20-30 FPS drops. How can you explain that? (RTX 4070 mobile- i7 13650HX)

  • @marvinvogtde

That's why Gsync is generally a lot better, it doesn't have the drawbacks of super low FPS that vsync has. But monitores with it are usually a lot more expensive sadly

Vsync should be turned on when your system overpower your monitor or the games shows way higher fps that your monitor can handle. Otherwise the game crashes all the time.
