The Sign of Four, sometimes known as The Sign of the Four is one of four novels featuring Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. A young woman, Mary Morstan, has been receiving pearls in the post for several years, but more than that, her father is missing and she seeks the aid of the famous Baker Street consulting detective. This is one of four novels by Conan Doyle and was first published in 1890.
I cannot account for my decision to give one of the main characters a slightly dodgy Australian accent. Perhaps he came across some Aussies, and it rubbed off on him - as the saying goes. As I say, an inexplicable choice.
It is narrated by Greg Wagland for Magpie Audio.

What thoroughly amazes me is that this entire video seems to have no ads anywhere in between. You are already incredibly generous to place these readings online for free. But to give the listener an uninterrupted experience is amazingly altruistic.
Thanks, Tom. Well, some of those ads are a tad intrusive.
No kidding
Especially the long ones. Anything over 30 seconds is just redundant. I have not bought products simply because of the way they choose to place lengthy ads for thing people need no push to buy. I honestly believe 70% of most ad agency's push are unnecessary except to show for the exorbitant amount they are charging the company they were hired by to help with advertising.
Honestly a few ads in a 4 hour audiobook that you get for free isn't much needed for compensation
Yes!!! I can fall asleep to those story without being wake up by an audio blast from Honda trying to sell me the new civic 😂
1:37:23 "Oh, ThE oTHeR mAn?" 🙄
That line delivery is absolutely flawless. I can practically *hear* the sarcastic smile and nod.
😂
You simply can't beat a skilled actor when it comes to narration. It tells in the telling, every time. Thank you so much Mr Wagland!
Thank you!
Mr. Wagland's ability to narrate the stories of Sherlock Holmes is just as impressive as Sherlock's detective skills. Well done, sir! Well done!
😊
Thank you again!
"After which the dead man conveniently got up and locked the door." You gotta love Mr Holmes.
“Hmmm.... there’s a flaw there.” Love the deadpan response.
Mr. Wagland is one of the finest audio book narrators I have ever heard. Though I am familiar with all of the Sherlock Holmes stories after reading them many times over the years, Mr. Wagland has brought new life to these old favorites.
Thank you sierraseven.
That's very nice of you to say so!
sierraseven You are so right!! You might also like audiobooks narrated by Michael Jayston. For example, Shroud for a Nightingale by P.D. James.....and John Le Carré's novels, too.
As far as I'm concerned, he is the tops when it comes to choosing who to listen to

"... cursed him for a little bloodthirsty imp." Great line, delivered so very well by this superb narrtor.
The narrator did an absolute masterclass of a job with this. I am amazed by his voice acting which brought to life this masterpiece of a book. Thank you for giving it life!
I absolutely agree. His better than the other people who do the job he is one of a kind me and my dad b4 he died like him it’s better than watching tv sometimes
Its 5:00 am and I have been awake most of the night as usual. Thank you for your telling us these delightful Sherlock Holmes stories to carry us through the night.
Glad they help, Kenneth. Cheers!
Sometimes Greg Waglands voice lulls me to sleep but at others the story keeps me awake. This one kept me awake.
whenever i have an anxiety attack or am deep in my depression, or my dyslexia is acting up, i ALWAYS come to your channel and listen to some Sherlock Holmes, and your voice always calms me down. Thank you kind sir !
Cheers Molly.
Keep on keeping on!!
Sherlock Holmes Stories Magpie Audio thank you for replying ! it means a lot to me, sir.
When I work on a project I listen to your stories,I love them!🎻💓
are you ok because his voice is weird
@@ooliver if you want to hate, go hate somewhere else. he doesn’t deserve the hate he’s really good at what he does
All the dogs are curled up on the bed, there's a quiet rain outside, and I'm falling asleep to this. ❤
Same with me, here in Scotland
It's 1.30am
I'm content to relax and listen to this, even though I cannot sleep!
I also think my greyhound, Katie, curled next to me, finds his voice very soothing
Thank you

And I thought I was the only one who had thought of that. It's OK if I fall asleep in the story because I've read and heard them many times before.
I envy you so....
He is so good The only drawback is I fall sleep so I lose we’re I am😢
As short as my attention span is I sat through this whole thing in one go . I was completely tied in the whole time. Your voice, the pacing it all comes together.
Well done 👍
A very hard day of chemotherapy side effects much aided by this fine offering..thank you very much❤️
Good to hear.
Every best wish to you.
May God Bless Ms Pennington during your time of need, ^ Greg Wagland lol. Cheers🍻
Hope you are doing better. I don't have cancer yet but do suffer from depression. Life is not fair. I find that having dogs does make life more bareble. Do you have any dogs?
Hope you're ok and wishing you a good 2019. ❤️
Elizabeth, how's it going with your cancer treatment? We're all thinking of you.
Hello and so much gratitude for these generous good wishes. Each of you should know how helpful they are. My condition has ups and downs but I am alive and usually fairly comfortable. I listen to these fine audios so often...I feel that I am among friends...lovely friends and fellow fans🙋🏼♀️
Thanks for the update Elizabeth. There are those of us out here who wonder how you are fairing from time to time. I wish my Corgis could attack you with snuggles and make you forget about everything for a while :D
Good to know Elizabeth. If you want a favourite poem recorded let me know!
All the best.
Daniel Gregson oh I wish I could snuggle up those beauties!
Sherlock Holmes Stories Magpie Audio tthaka by Cavafy is one I love so much. I’m afraid you are way too busy to have time for Dante! Anything in your voice would be such pleasure on t(8s evening after yet another chemotherapy infusion. So I will have another of your great ones, The Sign of Four for my bedtime story. You are a hero!
We may be listening to these great stories at different times, but I hope that you will feel that we are with you and keeping company with you through your ups and downs.
As much as I love the adaptions in film, nothing comes close to the original stories in all there glory..thank you so much for this gift!!
Their glory in english
The greatest thing about the Internet is sustaining solid works even after the books disappear and the storytellers have long past. Thanks 👍
I don’t understand what this means in the context of Sherlock Holmes specifically. Do you mean all the books that were printed originally are gone? I’m just a bit confused is all
Mr. Greg Wagland, you narrate beautifully sir! It is quite relaxing and comforting to listen to your readings! I listen to each one twice as often I listen to each once to fall asleep and once more to get through the next day. Thank you so very much for providing such joy and such enjoyment to each day for strangers like myself. I hope you are compensated well for your excellent work! 💓
The narration is impeccably done, I am enjoying this reading to no end.
Glad to hear it, Ethereal. Thanks for commenting.
Love your reading and the choices of accents! I am not a purist (or so knowledgeable), so I appreciate being able to hear the different characters in the narration easily distinguishable. Thank you so much for all the readings and for making them available here!
Cheers Hakausu
Yeah he is great ❤
I could not sleep without audio books in night, and holmes, I can also listen to holmes 24*7 Lol, great voice Greg, superb narration, Love your channel ❤❤😁😁👍👍
Everytime I read/hear this all I think of is Jeremy Brett and the best Granada series of the best Holmes and Watson ever. Thank you for these
I agree that they are the best team but Mr. Wagland is the best narrator/reader.
Brett was the hands down best interpreter of Holmes' eccentric behavior...imho...
Amazing that this is available on UA-cam. Thank you very much!
Now I can listen to the Sherlock Holmes books I love, and also practice English listening. Thank you!
Mr Wagland is a national treasure
An international treasure!!
Agree to disagree. I was really excited upon discovering this on UA-cam, but disappointed when listening to it.
I feel your disappointment!
I cant believe I just found this gem of a channel!!! Huge Sherlock fan and these readings are superb!! Thank you so much for sharing these!!!!
Thank you. I'll pass that on to the narrator - ie me.
Pure brilliance! Both the original text AND the reader.
...apart from the Victorian racism, sexism, exceptionalism and elitism. Obs.
...and the Aussie accent at the end.
If I could only take one luxury with me on a desert island, it would be a collection of Mr Wagland's readings! 10/10
Absolutely agree!! They are fabulous.
Absolutely!
Same with me
Or just take Greg himself, he could probably use a holiday.
Greg Wagland is an excellent narrator. It is a pleasure to be able to listen to the unexpurgated Sherlock Holmes stories.
Hats off & a round of hurrahs &
3 cheers to Mr Wagland!
Ive never enjoyed such a marathon listening in one go
& im throughly entertained &
Happy!
I love my Sherlock stories & id honestly never heard this one before so it was all brand new
For me & My Goodness!
What a treat it was !
You did a perfect narration
No slip ups, wrong pronunciations, superb diction
And, i was hard put to keep from thinking there was an actual
Cast of players/actors in this
Story
That to me is the mark of true professionalism when a single narrator is so good at voice acting that you dont question
There is only a single voice but a proper cast.
Wonderful seemless transitions from Dr Watson to the enigmatic
Sherlock to Inspector Jones & the wonderfully eccentric Thaddeus Sholto ( i hope i got the right twin ) to the good hearted sweet Mary soon to be
Mrs Watson...ahhh
What Bliss, ive enjoyed every minute so i thank you most
Sincerely, Mr Wagland
I appreciate you doing different “voices” for the different characters - I imagine otherwise it’d be pretty difficult to tell who was who.
Truly stellar talent
What a splendid rendition!!! I enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks much, Greg.
OMG You are incredible!
It's a trully pleasure listen to your audiobooks.
I am an spanish nurse, and this is what I use to relax from work, that these days has been harder (and improve my english too hahaha).
I'm very grateful that people like you do such marvellous things so others can enjoy.
Thank you very much!
The steady pace of Mr Wagland's reading is slow enough to be understood by non native speakers but not so slow as to be tedious for native speakers. I am English living in Spain and would love to find a similar reading in Spanish.

Greg, why don't you read all of A. C. Doyle's works; you are far and away his very best interpreter😎
I am not feeling well today. I left work and got in the bed to listen to this story and heal
my compliments to the narrator and to Magpie Audio.
I am good this autumn and winter.
Thank you very very much!
Such a great story with such a singular narration! I was also quite pleased to hear about the good doctor’s good fortune in this story.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Sherlock Holmes is still one of my favorites 😍
" When Gregson or Lestrade or Athelney Jones are out of their depths-which ,by the way, is their normal state -"
True enough. But these are exceptional cases.
So funny
*hears the dog's name and remembers The Great Mouse Detective* TOBY!!! :D

Hats off to Holmes and Watson. The best detective pair of all time in all of history ❤
True!
Not quite as good as Shags and Scoob but not bad.
Yeah
your characterizations and the way they speak (and their accents) are so good. thank you so much for all your work on these books :} 🎭💐😏
Have always been a huge fan of Mr. Holmes and these renderings are magnifecent. Many thanks
Mr Wagland, superb as ever! I'm a HUGE Waggers Super Fan!!
+Beanie B Cheers! Appreciated 🐩
This is my childhood recreated. And Mr Wagland brings Holmes alive with his voice.. ❤️❤️
Sitting in Baker Street, listening to Holmes and Watson, as an unobserved visitor, to be whisked off on an incredible journey to south London and further.
Does anything lie beyond south London?
I do so love Toby and the Baker Street Irregulars! 🀄️🀄️🀄️🀄️🀄️
Big thank you! You're a joy to the world! Holmes would be proud to hear you❤❤
I speak English but I am still learning and love Sherlock Holmes books. You kind sir, have such a beautiful voice and I love how you narrate the story, the way how you change the voice to embody each character amazes me and I understand every word you say because your accent is very clear and nice. Thank you, I really enjoyed this narrative.
Thank you Marissa
Ooooook Watson's got it bad !! 😂😂 Lovely reading as always. Thank you !
Yes! Thank you!
great to have you back!
thank you!

I play these while building my ship models. An amazing narrator!
One cannot multitask - either one does a thing or one does it not. To grasp the text, you should read (a digital copy of) the book while you hear Greg Wagland's readings.
I've been very sick the last couple of days, nothing to do but listen to these audiobooks. Finished a Study in scarlet and doing this. Thank you mr. Greg Wagland for no ads and awesome narration
I work hardly to come back again to hear and understand this novel .and in one day I'll say I did it .
As a huge Sherlock fan this is superb! At chapter 9 however you said 10 but apart from that this is going to be my new hobby, Listening to you read Sherlock
Thanks a lot, Greg. It’s awesome work to narrate such a long story. The best part of this story for me is John found Mary.
Covid 19 has me going crazy , least I don't have to actually read lol
Thanks Greg you do the Lord's work.

Cheers Sargridssen. Stay well!
Just finished the whole audio book whilst reading along , this seemed very helpful as it is a book that I need for my GCSE literature exam.
Glad it was useful, Ag Ag.
Getting over the fever from the covid vaccine and listening to this gem all night was perfect
I pray your better soon..not a bad way to muttle through sickness these tales...
Thank you for so many wonderfully narrated stories.
Glad you like them! Thanks for your donation - much appreciated. - Nice illustrations by the way!
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio How kind of you to say! Thanks. Sorry for not replying sooner but I didn't check my notifications until just now! O.o
Perfectly wonderful! What a fine mixture of suspense, love (just the right amount: very little) and adventure, seasoned by some very good Holmesisms.
And, truly Mr. Wagland, you are the perfect Holmes as well as Watson, let alone your fluffy inspectors. I also found the Aussie-accent very fitting, for the man had been a convict somewhere down there in far away exotic straits for many years, and thus, you made him sound like it.
Most impressive.
Thank you very much!
Really nice and lovely
Amazing to the ear
Best narration of Holmes novels
Excellent read, what a wonderful surprise! Thank you, you've made spring cleaning a much lighter affair as I was able to listen to these immortal stories read impeccably while kneeling down to rub something!
Oo er, missus 😀
Glad it helped with the spring cleaning. I share the views of one Quentin Crisp on cleaning however - well maybe not quite that bad !!! Cheers ☺️
One cannot multitask - either one does a thing or one does it not. To grasp the text, you should read (a digital copy of) the book while you hear Greg Wagland's readings.
This is my favourite Sherlock Holmes/Arthur Conan Doyle/Greg Wagland reading. I must have heard it 15 times. I can't listen to any other Conan Doyle narrators after enjoying the way Mr Wagland brings each and every character to life through his voice acting.
Hey Greg.. have you considered reading some of Ken Follet's works? He has some terrific characters to get your teeth into
I'm afraid Ken's copyright will probably outlive me! Thanks for you kind comments though David - and a happy new year to you!
the more,i listen to it,the more i love it.thanks a lot!
Another excellent job in which the listener is thrust into the world of Holmes & Watson & the cast of characters. Ironically, as much as I enjoy the varied radio show content with several actors (including Rathbone & Bruce), I always return to Greg’s one-man narration for his VARIETY of character voices! ACDoyle’s work got me wondering about the factual basis for it. So, there was a harsh British penal colony set up in the Andaman (Ross) Islands- lasting until WWII. Currently part of India, some of the remaining inhabitants live a primitive existence fiercely resisting all contact with outsiders by means of knives, bows, & arrows. Several intruders, trespassers, an escaped convict, a missionary, & unfortunate shipwrecks have all been attacked & some killed. One of the few pictures- by helicopter- is of a tribesman aiming a bow at the craft! For protection against unwelcome visitors & European diseases, Sentinel Island is today “forbidden” with a five nautical mile (9.2 km) exclusion area enforced by the Indian coast guard. Contact has been so limited that their language is unknown and the census (by air) is several hundred, but could range from 15 to 500. In the few contacts, gift live pigs were lance with arrows and buried on the sand beach; visitors were signaled to leave by islanders turning their haunches as if to defecate, making cutting motions with their knives, then picking up bows & arrows!- “Everything We Know About the Very Isolated North Sentinelese People of North Sentinelese Island” [Fortune magazine, 2018]
Just had to revisit this for my bday. Love all your channels and stories.
So great that this is unabridged! Nice fluffy modern values adaptations are good, but it is so useful to be reminded what was seen as appropriate 130 years ago.
Yes - agreed!
Every night I look for a new one you have read! All 77 shorts several times, because I enjoy them so much!❤
Thank you so much for these stories I have just moved house and the monotony of unpacking and finding places to put things is much alleviated Again Thank you

Superbly read by Greg Wagland (as always). A very enjoyable listen whilst I work from home.
Unequalled reading of a fabulous, deeply charming story, which bears repeated listening. Thank you so much!
Another great reading, thanks for the upload!
You outdid yourself! Once I am begun I am hopelessly focused to the finish. For reading was my consuming activity, but old eyes enjoy an audio from time to time. BTW it was quite helpful to have each segment and time listed. Thank you.
I think some kind person did the timestamp things for me.
Cheers Gran
What a story and so beautifully read! Thank you so much! You really are talented.
One cannot help wonder, when listening to these exotic tales, who the “savages” are. Thanks, Greg, v much. Finally got some sleep. And am now listening to the end. Good grief!
Indeed.
My thoughts exactly
Just found your channel; absolutely fantastic! Excellent narration. Thank you, sir.
Glad you enjoy it, MrMonty!
I did'nt expected that you will heart my comment that fast,it means you are really active at it.just writing another comment to tell you ur presence is a boon for us sir.thanks for that lovely audiobook .
Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for your comments.
Thank you Greg as always a wonderful presentation!! Be safe. God bless :)
Thank you so much for this narration. May the Lord reward you for your generosity. This has been invaluable to me in my academic pursuit. Much appreciated. ❤
You are very welcome
I did not expect to hear that accent at 1:06:35. That was pretty darn good. Especially after having only heard the Study in Scarlet from you before, so only getting heavy British accents when reading as other characters. That was a very pleasant surprise =D
What accent was it, Michael? Thank you for your comment.
The Scottish one
Thrilled to have found this audio. Professionally done.
Cheers Jane
Not only no commercial interruptions but the addition of subtitles for listeners learning English and listeners whose hearing may not be fully up to the challenge.
i really wanna thank you for the amazing books. i spend most of my day working and i don't have much time to read, this i so helpful keeps me focused. thank you very much
Glad you like them dew nada! I like audiobooks if I'm working or otherwise busy. Cheers!
Greg..you are extremely blessed..love your voice. Love from Kerala!
Thanks for listening, Farooq. Very kind of you to say so. Hope all well in Kerala.
thank you. always will love Holmes
A fantastic book and beautifully narrated; each and every character came leaping to life. Thank you so much ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is by far my favorite one! Your reading, I mean.
Great reading of this classic. I love the Sherlock Holmes stories and novels.
So do I! Thank you!
You ‘ve saved me 👌🏾 thank you so much .
Greg Wagland is a good voice actor in his reading. Makes for a great storytelling.
How is it Homes can be so delightful when his whole persona is so different to my own. But of course it's the wonderful language used that envelopes me. Thanks to all.
thank you for the help on my English GCSE, reading this myself would have been quite the task
Glad it was helpful.
I find the first 19 minutes of this story to be wonderful insight into the mind of *Holmes* & his continued relationship w/ *Watson* . I love it. This is in the story: *A Study in Scarlet* I'm referring to
Yes
This may be a long shot, but could you narrate any of the “Arsene Lupin” books? Particularly the “Arsene Lupin vs Herlock Sholmes” novel. Your narration is just so amazingly done and I would love to hear your take on that novel
My Schedule have been keeping me from reading these awesome books.but good thing I have found out about these audio books
Hope you enjoy it!
Other narrators are about 50%, the best of them perhaps 75-80% perfection, but Greg Wagland is the only one I could give a 100% score to! Just no other word for it, PERFECTION 🥰
Thank you, Roringu Sanda. Appreciated!
