Your Sherlock tales have been alongside me through 6 years of Stage IV cancer. A funny story, shortly after I was diagnosed, we had to stay at my in-laws to get some renovations done at our place. Me and my 8-year-old boy would sleep on a mattress on the floor in the loungeroom. I had the chemo pump in my arm and to help me and my son sleep, I had your version of the Hound of the Baskervilles shared through two headphones - one for me and one for my son. As we listened in the dark, I knew my boy was a little scared and so I comforted him, telling him that when the really scary bit came up, I would fast forward. He agreed and we listened away. The next thing I knew, it was morning and I woke to see my son with the headphones still in his ears - he was lying on his side looking at me. In a moment of a little panic, I asked, “did you listen to the story right till the end? I’m sorry, I fell asleep and didn’t switch it off.” He nodded his head and said with wide eyes, “there was a big black dog with fire coming out of its mouth!” He’s turned into a fine young man - so no harm there! From all of us out here: Thank you for your work, Mr Wagland!

@@2msvalkyrie529 Haha! I am a member of a writing group and I thought I'd have a go at recording spoken word homework one week. I discovered I have a bad habit of 'rounding off' my words and running them together. "Falling in" becomes "fallininin". In fact, somehow entire words seem to vanish like this. I do not enunciate my T's very well at all. Nor my D's unless they're at the beginning of the word. Nor words ending in LE or words with double letters in such as middle or mitten or gladden. Funnily enough I did record a voice message for a company I worked for when the professional artist cancelled. I had to fit everything in between two 'markers' , and even though I only had to say "thank you for calling blah blah. For books and audio, please press 1" etc etc I kept forgetting my words! I also had to 'smile happily' as I spoke, which made me look like an absolute psycho, lol.
I have several voices and accents, but can sustain them only for a line or two. I need to become good at doin what you are doin, therefore am goin to try to learn from hearin you. I hope that you are gettin paid right much for your readins. I particularly admire your timin in the pacin of the beginnin of each character's lines in dialogues.
You and Mel Blanc are very similar, though totally unlike one another. Well maybe not totally. I would be so curious to know your reaction to Mel Blanc, were you familiar with his characters, such as Foghorn Leghorn (Texas), Yosemite Sam, Marvin the Martian (Mars), Daffy Duck, and others. They are not like your portrayals at all, yet the similarity lies in both of your ability to portray sundry characters. His range of characters is broader, although they are more like caricatures of a fantastic cosmos, unlike yours which manage to be entertainin in spite of bein much more homely and modestly presented. I leave out Bugs Bunny because his accent is repulsive to me. ua-cam.com/video/ZeAM1vwEcFg/v-deo.html
This is my all time favorite Sherlock Holmes adventure!! I’ve listened to this reading at least ten times and I absolutely love it. Thank you sir for these wonderful readings!
This was the most surprising thing when rereading this. No one shows how cheeky Sherlock really is, they usually just make him a sarcastic asshole as shorthand.
This is a must-listen for anyone who loves mystery novels. The combination of a classic Sherlock Holmes story and superb narration makes for an unforgettable listening experience. Highly recommended! Thank you!
You read to me every night, as I am falling asleep, transforming me back to the child safely ensconsed in parental love, and with no worries or duties other than to listen, enjoy, and drift into sleep Thank you! 🌺
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio No narrator wants to hear that their work puts someone to sleep.....but fortunately, Mr. Wagland seems gracious enough to accept the complement as it was intended. I completely agree with you Anakrahn, When I can not "sleep with Sherlock" my night is not complete!
I listen to Sherlock Holmes every night it helps me sleep but when a particularly good part comes along I can't sleep until it's over thank u for this wonderful naration I've never slept more soundly I suffer from insomnia but within an hour i am fast asleep thank u
I hope you don't get bummed by all of the people you help sleep. It is truly a great gift of healing. And remember, even more of us (and often the same) get so much pleasure from listening to your steady, resonant voice acting out so many characters. Honestly, I don't know how you do it. 🙏🏿🌸
THOB and fellow SACD audio stories have proven a Godsend over the last 11 days of quarantine. I thank you & the narrator for your commitment to excellence.
Thanks Greg, you're indispensable now. The consumate voice of SACD. I have savoured every word of this dark tale. What a marvellous achievement reading fifteen chapters flawlessly and with such commitment.
I often listen to the Sherlock Holmes Stories. They are so beautifully narrated by Mr. Wagland. Alas! Far too well! I cannot recall listening to the majority of them beyond the first five minutes before awakening 7.5 hours later, the intervening time having passed restfully, but assuredly, in sleep. The joy and paradox of Mr. Wagland's narration is that I can listen to every story repeatedly, knowing I enjoy them, although each is as fresh as though I'd never listened to anything of it before. A cunning device, worthy of Moriarty, that effortlessly guarantees repeated viewings.
The prose is overwrought and could certainly have stood some heavy editing on Doyle's part (or a sorely needed editor) but the book is interesting to refer to when watching the films. The screenplays manage to tell the story more succinctly and without so much dithering. Basil Rathbone is still the best Holmes on screen and for those who aren't Britishers, a little research into Dartmoor is helpful in understanding the setting. .Rathbone's version of the story can be seen free on TUBI. There are many photos of Dartmoor online and a little googling will turn up lots of information on this little known (for most of us) and slightly spooky corner of southwestern England. Thanks to Mr Wagland for his ever superb reading.
You are a wonderful narrator. I am a 12 year old who has this book as the course 'novel' with an exam tomorrow, and it was a joy to listen to your audio to prepare. Thank you.
I've been listening to Holmes and Watson s adventures to go to bed for the last few months and I seem to be going to bed earlier and earlier just so I can chill and listen to your brilliant story telling
Greg Wagland and his Magpie Audio was my very first introduction to UA-cam. I have since listened with great delight to all of his performances of the Sherlock Holmes stories. His are the best work of any of the performances of ACD’s work out there! I have listened again and again to each edition of these wonderful writings. Now that I have discovered UA-cam and it’s myriad offerings, I still return with great delight to Mr. Wagland’s talented, just right, performances! Thank you for your excellent work!
I have listened to this production several times, and can not say enough about the quality of this production. If you have only seen old movies of "the Hounds", treat yourself to this excellent audio book. Greg Wagland does every character justice. Even though you know the tale, I guarantee you will be on the edge of your seat more than once.
There is a singular pleasure in listening to a story read aloud. That harkens back to childhood memories of parents reading to us, without a doubt. However, it is also ancient memories of stories told around a campfire. The pleasure we feel is a reflection of how important it was that vital information be passed down via the spoken word. Those humans who did not feel that pleasure would be less likely to remember the lessons and less likely to survive!
Herniated disc can be repaired surgically. I had one 14 years ago. They take a piece of bone from your hip, remove the disc, replace it with your own bone, then screw it in place with titanium screws. Your own bone fuses to the vertebrae. Mine was in the upper back and the surgery was called an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. It works. There may be a similar procedure for the lower back. See a neurosurgeon. Good luck!
Thank you for such for Bringing the Hounds of the Baskervilles to life. Your narrative is the most Brilliant version I have ever heard. Your Perfect and We are all the better for what you have done to keep these Timeless stories alive. Brilliant and it is a true honor to have this and all the Cannon brought to life . Breathtaking . I have my pipe in hand and my eyes closed and I am in your debt . Thank you!!! Thank you. You give Sir Arthur C Doyle the Honor he deserves.
I absolutely agree with you. With my eyes closed, I could almost imagine I was sitting in a Victorian sitting room. When I opened my eyes to see modern furnishings, it was jarring, so transported was I by his voice. I have remedied this by creating a Victorian sitting room. Now all is perfection! I just need Holmes or Watson in the chair opposite, lol.
i have listened to your audio books for 4 years now. this book is my fav out of the sherlock sagas. i have loved sherlock holmes since i was a mere child and your delicate voice is perfect for sherlock and you have sent me to sleep for ages now. i started listening to you in 2020 and i was 12 or 13. i am literally a day away from hitting 17. thank you so much. love your work man xx Yours sincerly, Jessica Knight
This is brilliant. I was in an unfortunate accident, and one of my eyes was injured. So until the treatment is over and the eye is healed, I can not do anything but be bedridden. This audio book helped me a lot to spend my time. I loved Sherlock Holmes stories when I was a kid, and hearing them back now gives me a feeling of nostalgia and excitement again. The voicing is brilliant, and I really appreciate the fact that the narrator went to the lengths, such as using different voices for different characters and showing the emotions in the dialogues. This audio book has given me a real good experience, and I enjoyed it a lot. ❤ Thank you for your brilliant effort.
As I listen or read Sherlock Holmes it just sucks you right into the story, these stories are books that should sit on everybody's book shelf. They are true classics! Thank you ever so much, it is very gratifying to know we can find books like this on u tube, especially during these last couple of year's. Very Grateful.
Just finished hounds of the Baskervilles. Mr. Greg Wagland, as always, your narration is superb. Your depiction of an American accent I think, is flawless.

Excellent reading. Such natural skill in the voice of the reader. A most enviable talent indeed. Have listened dozens of times. Never tire of this story.
I suffer from hearing difficulties and normally can't make out audiobook. Thank you for your very clear reading of this interesting story and at a correct pace for me to make out. Others read either too quietly or too fast for me. I have read most of the Sherlock Holmes stories but hadn't read this one. An intriguing story excellently read. Thank you.
2:42:53 “Mrs. Barrymore is of interest to me. She’s a… heavy, solid person; very LIMITED… INTENSELY respectable… and inclined to be puritanical.” THE most Victorian line ever written
I have been listening for sometime but this is my first comment. They are wonderful in every way. I will never get tired of them. Thank you so very much for your readings.
With this I have finished the entirety of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Thank you for all the wonderful narrations you have done, without them I would surely never finish the series a I'm an incredibly slow and inattentive reader.
The voice of Mr Wagland is very reassuring & soothing. Like that of David Attenborough or Morgan Freeman. I feel he could read the Oxford Dictionary & make it sound interesting!!! ❤
But the Oxford Dictionary IS very interesting. Washing machine manuals translated into English by Turkish or Chinese manufacturers - now that would be a challenge
My mother often said that I insisted she read me the dictionary at bedtime when I was very small. I don't remember it, but I still read dictionaries, (especially English to other language ones) 70+ years later.
This has to be the best story Conan Doyle ever wrote! Just love it, could hear it again & again always noticing something I missed before. Descriptions of the moor are really incredible, enjoyed visiting Dartmoor as a child, but somehow don’t fancy it anymore??
it's def my favorite. but there is one other story i identify with so much, when holmes says about the horse shoe meant to make cow tracks, he tells the father of the lost boy, this is the second most remarkable thing i have seen here. explaining that the large commission holmes has made from solving the case, 'i am a poor man.' I love that! But it is this story overall, that's great.
Conan Doyle was under tremendous pressure to bring Holmes back . He succeeded beyond most expectations . There was , at one time , a fascinating documentary on how he researched the story and brought the different elements together - in a fairly short time - to create one of the classic murder mysteries . ( Docu WAS on UA-cam at one time ? )
I daily look forward to that part of night before sleep when I put in my earphones, close my eyes and feel every single word relishing my neurons deep down my brain.Thankyou Greg for such a great experience, your narration adds to Sherlock's beauty. Appreciate it.
This has been one of my all time favorite tales since I was just a lad. I've heard radio plays, seen t.v. episodes and movies over the years, enjoyed each presentation, but this reading is by far the best. Thanks so much for posting ♡
Yes. If you could choose only one Murder Mystery story to preserve for posterity it would probably be this. ? All the essential ingredients are there .
My English students at ASEAN English Tutor in Chiang Mai Thailand love your readings, one of the few English speaking audio books they can fully understand - well done!
Never read or listened to Hound of Baskervilles before. I am enthralled by your reading of it, it is so exciting and well done. Can't wait to listen to the rest of your readings
I listened to the full story on Spotify. Each chapter was the length of my walk to work so it was a perfect fit in my schedule. Thank you so much for this and all other Sherlock Holmes recordings. They are my favorites to the extend that I cannot accept another voice as the real Sherlock Holmes but your own. Truly wonderful! PS: I must admit that the audio error at the 5:49:32 mark did startle me for a moment
My boxed set of the complete Sherlock Holmes books have just arrived and I could not help but read them with your voice in my head as much as Basil Rathbone as the great detective's face is.
I have fond memories of a Saturday night in Edinburgh at my Grans at Dalkieth Road.. Myself and my brother earlier in the day had the pleasure of watching the first three Star Wars films which were shown at The Dominion Cinema . That night we arrived at Grans who had the snooker on her old TV.. The trolley came out with the Teapot, cakes and various biscuits. The TV got switched too BBC 1 and it was 11pm and The Hound Of The Baskervilles started.. Almost 30 years ago and it's as clear now as it was then.. I always say it was my favourite day...
Perfect. Either for lulling you to sleep at night with the calming voice and the story itself drifting into your sleeping yet still open mind or on a free day awake to listen too in an Armchair in its intirety for relaxing and escapist pleasure.
Your oratory is phenomenal. Passage of time with great friends, old tomes read long ago and an oration that, even while I am working, conveys both the emotive and conflictive nature of the work. Away from the charm and language of the works of Doyle. I do greatly appreciate your accompaniment while passing the day at my job. Fantastic way to get through 8 hours. With great appreciation, ✌️ & Favour to you, and All
My favourite of all Sherlock Holmes stories, writing is superb, you really feel like your on that moor! Along with the perfect narration this is without doubt the best version I’ve ever heard.
Splendid reading! Love this creepy tale. Read it two or three times & listened to it a similar number over the last 30 odd years. Never tire of it. As a young boy back in the 80s, my brothers & I used to listen in fear & delight to the Ladybird cassette recording (now available on UA-cam). I’ve visited Dartmoor a few times over the years & it will always be associated in my mind with Holmes, Watson & the hound.
4:51:20 "We have him Watson, we have him! And I dare swear that before tomorrow night he will be fluttering in our net, as helpless as one of his own butterflies. A pin,a cork, a card and we add him to the Baker Street collection"
Can’t help thinking Watson broke this case, he got the Laura Lions connection also the fact that Stapleton ran a school before coming to Dartmoor which lead to Holmes tracing his original name of Roger Baskerville.✊♥️
Magpie, YOU MAKE AMAZING AUDIOBOOKS! They are great and they helped me drift into sleep too many times for me to count. I love this audiobook, thank you for making it!
Side note, I might be uploading on my UA-cam channel soon. You might want to find out what it is! (Hint: A place in Japan will have a video. Not telling you all what place yet!)
Yes, excellent narration all the way through. Such descriptive writing from ACD of course.....I could feel the chill winds and sense the darkness over Bodmin Moor. I lived near there as I child and can remember it well, but only on sunny days. I've only discovered audio books within last few months and love them but the reader makes the story come alive I think. I'm reading with my grandson at the moment, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. He reads a chapter and I read a chapter.....he is totally still and silent while I read..... I love it.
2022... Sitting at home in isolation.. Enjoying this lovely story read in a cozy, velvety voice.. Thank you kindly. And let This Blasted Isolation END.

Love, love, loved it! you must strive to focus on the high amount of people that liked this and for get the ones that don't. Thank you for sharing this for myself and others to enjoy! I need my Sherlock Holmes ever so often. I am so busy and getting to listen to it as I work is absolutely amazing.

I made my previous comment before beginning this audiobook, but I really should have waited! I thoroughly agree with everyone else on here regarding your beautiful narration. You've done Sir Arthur proud.🙏
My absolute favourite. As a child I got my ma to check under the bed every night for 'the hound'. She never asked how I thought it got under there, she dutifully checked as she knew I wouldn't let the light be turned out until she had. Even then I never let my arm dangle over the side of the bed.

I had to fit everything in between two 'markers' , and even though I only had to say "thank you for calling blah blah. For books and audio, please press 1" etc etc I kept forgetting my words! I also had to 'smile happily' as I spoke, which made me look like an absolute psycho, lol.
Hound - one of me favourites. Thanks for the comments!
Indeed the most famous of the sixty Sherlock Holmes books! 'Tis my favourite, too.

Remember play games and watch movie 🍿 of the the hound really spooky and creepy too
Greg Wagland is one of the best narrators I have ever heard , pure delight
absolutely
Wrong he is the best.
Revisiting this iconic book after 13 years gripped by nostalgia. The quality of the narration is marvelous. Thank you!
Cheers DaSnarky!
This is my all time favorite Sherlock Holmes adventure!! I’ve listened to this reading at least ten times and I absolutely love it. Thank you sir for these wonderful readings!
Thanks Blue. My pleasure.
Handsome :)
You know Sherlock isnt the cold calculating machine he seems to be when he reveals his love of being dramatic in every genius action
SOME of that could be the "Sensationalism" of Watson
This was the most surprising thing when rereading this. No one shows how cheeky Sherlock really is, they usually just make him a sarcastic asshole as shorthand.
This is a must-listen for anyone who loves mystery novels. The combination of a classic Sherlock Holmes story and superb narration makes for an unforgettable listening experience. Highly recommended! Thank you!
Very kind. Thank you!
You read to me every night, as I am falling asleep, transforming me back to the child safely ensconsed in parental love, and with no worries or duties other than to listen, enjoy, and drift into sleep Thank you! 🌺
That's a great message! Cheers!
It helps me too
Well said
Well said. You’re a good writer. Like Shakespeare.
I listen to Sherlock Holmes every night it helps me sleep but when a particularly good part comes along I can't sleep until it's over thank u for this wonderful naration I've never slept more soundly I suffer from insomnia but within an hour i am fast asleep thank u
I am very glad this helps!
Same for me. I can recite the first ten minutes😂
Me too.. Lovely, relaxing narration.
It's good to know I'm not the only one who does this lol. Over time I've gone through the entire Holmes canon.
I hope you don't get bummed by all of the people you help sleep. It is truly a great gift of healing. And remember, even more of us (and often the same) get so much pleasure from listening to your steady, resonant voice acting out so many characters. Honestly, I don't know how you do it. 🙏🏿🌸
I share that hope, Lisa. Glad you are enjoying the stories! All the best!
Cunning indeed!!!
Yes. Have a holiday on Dartmoor!
Greg Wagland is a genius narrator. Thank you so much for this, which has given me hours of enjoyment ,':*}
Glad to hear it. Thank you for your kind words.
You are a wonderful narrator. I am a 12 year old who has this book as the course 'novel' with an exam tomorrow, and it was a joy to listen to your audio to prepare. Thank you.
Hope your exam went well, Aditya R R!

I've been listening to Holmes and Watson s adventures to go to bed for the last few months and I seem to be going to bed earlier and earlier just so I can chill and listen to your brilliant story telling
Thank you for your kind comment Mr Dickenson.
Love “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” too. The videos made in the 80’s are great. I believe the narrator is one of the actors.
I have listened to this production several times, and can not say enough about the quality of this production. If you have only seen old movies of "the Hounds", treat yourself to this excellent audio book. Greg Wagland does every character justice. Even though you know the tale, I guarantee you will be on the edge of your seat more than once.
+Susan Dombrowski thank you Susan 🦄
Can't imagine A world where I can't turn to your most enjoyable reading of this tale. So enjoyable in every way!
Thanks Susan. Always appreciated!
Good luck!
Me too- beautifully read. Well paced, lovely articulation and great acting in the dialogue. Helped me sleep in hospital this week.
Glad to hear they helped Lesley. All the best!
I have anxiety attacks, usually at night and could not sleep. Started listening to your reading and it helped so much. Thank you
Glad it did
Thank you for such for Bringing the Hounds of the Baskervilles to life.
Glad you enjoyed them Scott.
True praise indeed from the man himself!!👍✊
i have listened to your audio books for 4 years now. this book is my fav out of the sherlock sagas. i have loved sherlock holmes since i was a mere child and your delicate voice is perfect for sherlock and you have sent me to sleep for ages now. i started listening to you in 2020 and i was 12 or 13. i am literally a day away from hitting 17. thank you so much. love your work man xx

Thank you for your brilliant effort.
I’ve read it hundred times and it is the first time I’m listening to this amazing story in original language. Thank you for wonderful narration!
Very glad you enjoyed it. All the best!
As I listen or read Sherlock Holmes it just sucks you right into the story, these stories are books that should sit on everybody's book shelf. They are true classics!
Thank you ever so much, it is very gratifying to know we can find books like this on u tube, especially during these last couple of year's. Very Grateful.
Love listening to your narrations as I work. Gets me through an otherwise monotonous day
Glad to hear it!
This is your best work. Top notch narration + voices
Just finished hounds of the Baskervilles. Mr. Greg Wagland, as always, your narration is superb. Your depiction of an American accent I think, is flawless.
This reading is so amazing!!! I’m on chapter 5 so far, and it’s 11:30 pm, but I’m not stopping!! This is an amazing book and an amazing recording!! Thankyou so much!!👏👏👏
Glad you enjoy it!
Thank you.
Appreciate your comment - thanks Carol
2:42:53 “Mrs. Barrymore is of interest to me. She’s a… heavy, solid person; very LIMITED… INTENSELY respectable… and inclined to be puritanical.”
THE most Victorian line ever written
That’s how I describe myself
I can ONLY hear those lines delivered with relish by Jeremy Brett. ! Greg is excellent but JB was the Master .
One of my absolute favorite authors and stories.
Woof!
Flawless story, flawless author, flawless narrator. Thx
Glad you like them, Patrik! All the best!
There was , at one time , a fascinating documentary on how he researched the story and brought the different elements together -
in a fairly short time - to create one of the classic murder mysteries .
Thank you, E. N. P.
Yes. If you could choose only one Murder Mystery story to preserve for posterity it would probably be
this.

What on earth do you mean?
These are the voices of the original Holmes, Watson ect?😉
i was listening to the end while trying to sleep, I thought there was a demon in the room.
Didn't know Spotify did audio 3, useful piece of information, thank you.
Sounds great!!! Grans are great. We watched the wrestling
Perfect.
Either for lulling you to sleep at night with the calming voice and the story itself drifting into your sleeping yet still open mind or on a free day awake to listen too in an Armchair in its intirety for relaxing and escapist pleasure.
I've loved the Hound of the Baskervilles since forever! Rather poetic justice.
Yes. So have I. Cheers Sivan!
I’m so pleased with how your channel has expanded... been listening for a few years and it’s given me so many pleasurable nights
Thanks Rich for your support! Cheers!
With great appreciation, ✌️ & Favour to you, and All
Thanks Raven. Glad they pass the time. Six hour working days should be long enough!

My favourite of all Sherlock Holmes stories, writing is superb, you really feel like your on that moor! Along with the perfect narration this is without doubt the best version I’ve ever heard.
It helped me spend a day fruitfully, stuck in dismal lockout from Covid-19.
Conan Doyle was a master at creating the atmosphere of a place in a few paragraphs . Whether it was London , Yorkshire or the West Country..
Me too, have visited Dartmoor a few times, always imagine I can hear the hound!😮
I live on the edge of it....not sure if my rescue pjrt is the Hound or the Beast of Bodmin😂
A wonderful job Greg. One of the best books ever written and it would even be a best seller had it come out today.
This is a classic. I love these stories. The narrator is perfect
I agree. Thanks Connie!
Favorite story thank you so much you read it so well
Please allow me to say that I absolute love your narration of this story!!!!
4:51:20 "We have him Watson, we have him! And I dare swear that before tomorrow night he will be fluttering in our net, as helpless as one of his own butterflies. A pin,a cork, a card and we add him to the Baker Street collection"
I love your voice. Thank you for keeping me company during my insomnia.
Wow cousin.lol.

I love it.
Thanks Christine. Yes, Bodmin Moor - perhaps it's not Dartmoor after all. Confused :-)

You've done Sir Arthur proud.🙏
My absolute favourite. As a child I got my ma to check under the bed every night for 'the hound'.
She never asked how I thought it got under there, she dutifully checked as she knew I wouldn't
let the light be turned out until she had. Even then I never let my arm dangle over the side
of the bed.
