  • Hey There,
Here's a video I made demonstrating a basic exercise/warm-up on working sticking combinations for quintuplets, non-meter specific. Please pardon my terrible speaking and grammar, but I'm not used to having to speak into a camera and it makes me quite nervous and awkward to do so! I hope you enjoy the video and can get some good info from it and hopefully next time I will be less awkward. It helps not having Ari Hoenig there watching ;)
Also, for sticking it out with such a long video, there's a nice little drum solo at the end, vamping and improvising to a groove in 7-- for the music nerds, it's mostly in 3-4, but about half way through I lose the one. This is ok, since I was simply messing about.
The background music that you hear is the track 'Staring In The Mirror, Darkly' by Andy Milne and Dapp Theory, off of our latest release, "Forward In All Directions", which was released last year via Whirlwind recordings:

For more info on Dapp Theory, check out www.andymilne.com/projects/dapp-theory/
I do not hold the rights to the song used in the video.
Please, leave comments and let me know what you think about the video and let me know if there are any topics or techniques or anything really, that you would like to see me demonstrate in a video!
    Time Marks:
    Quintuplet Exercise: 8:52
For the Drumfoolery In 7 solo... 16:23

Really honored to be with these guys. They make beautiful cymbals and soon I'll use my lighter, softer cymbals in a demo and a couple of lesson vidoes soon, but can see them already in a few other videos online. Check them out here:

Kenny, thank you for the video... Although I already had a decent grasp on what quintuplets were, you really made me think about how to not only mechanically play them but actually feel them and make different groupings... Awesome insight and playing; hope to see more of your drumming..

Hi Kenny. Loved the tuplet lesson. Would you recommend playing this with your feet keeping time as well as the metronome? I’ve playplayed the exercise keeping time between my kick drum and Hat and found it beneficial

hi kenny, is this an example of how you play the way you do just shortly after 7:50 ofyour live in bagota john zorn masada marathon video?

+BCzepa Hi! In a sense, it is, or better put, it could be. Usually in a live setting and especially so with Abraxas, the intent and spirit of what's being played tends to be more of the driving motivation for the music, so although i may use some -tuplet groupings live, they're more coming from an instinctual place, so chances are they won't be as precise as how i practice them and demonstrate in this video. I guess the short answer would be, "Yes, in a matter of speaking."
