I’m a liar, so let me just say I did those perfectly the first time I tried em… and really super fast! I even threw in some floor Tom hits while I was doing em. I noticed you are creating an ambiance of Magic with your snare technique. Cooooooool! Truth: I didn’t even know what a buzz roll was till you said it here. Ha ha! I’m a Guitarist, not a Drummer… so I’m starting from scratch completely, as I build my own kit from things I get here and there. I can’t believe how much fun it all is! Thank for the insights !

Mr. Moore, I consider you as a reference for the execution of beautiful buzz rolls. I am kindly asking you to make a video on page 12 of "Stick Control", where I found myself spending hours on youtube and the internet in general not able to find one video on the matter, namely how one should play a 7 stroke closed roll. Around 10 minute mark you get the most precious tecnique advice you would ever get in your life from a guy who tried em all - mr. Stanton Moore! Thanks for sharing a bif truth for us to ponder on. Tecnique is just means to an end...the sound you're looking for!
And obviously not hurting yourself in the process is a big plus 😅

Some VERY interesting approaches are presented here, the exercises are very useful. I also come from a strict rudimental background, and I also had to find a drumming mentor who demonstrated how to loosen up and improve my musicality. This is a very important stage in a musician/drummer's development! Excellent video!!!

One of my all-time favourite drummers: Stanton Moore. First time I heard you play was when my school teacher gave us a list of ensemble song choices, with "Funky Bird" as an ensemble option and no one in any band in our year wanted to play it - not even me, even though I recognized the resemblance to "Cissy Strut". But I saved a list of all the song options and later explored them one by one on my own, even though some of them I really didn't like at the time (such as Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds"), and tracked down the respective album of every song; hence eventually finding Coolin' Off... I found many fun songs from the album (such as "Everybody Wants Some"), but "Go Go" floored me. Because every other song had a consistent RH/hi-hat pattern, that one had a swung 2:3 clave pattern, it was so difficult that I convinced myself it was played by a percussionist ... until I found a UA-cam video of you playing it on the cowbell. Having only learned basic jazz at the time, learning "Go Go" was frickin' tall order, borderline impossible... But difficulty be damned, I tackled it using every learning method I know... and I still struggle with it to this day except the difficulty is no longer about swinging everything, it's swinging everything with the same consistency with every limb, every phrase, to every bar for the whole song. Frickin' difficult song to play, but in all my years challenging this song, I changed from a predominantly prog rock drummer to a more versatile funk/jazz/fusion drummer. True story. And I got you to thank, Mr. Moore, for inspiring me from way back then (10 years ago?).
Yeah, your moral story is very real - "not what you want but do it anyway, it might get you to places you never imagined you'd feel more at home in". Great lesson! It has taken me a long time to appreciate the buzz roll. My background is also orchestral. I first heard the buzz roll in N.O. when I was young and thought those drummers were just doing the their best but couldn't do a proper roll!!!
Rich, Thank you! I’m glad you’re digging this lesson. Yes, it took me a very long time too to learn to “embrace the slop”. But now I love it and try to approach it as a “controlled looseness”.

So good. Great lesson and advice on taking gigs that might not be our favorite music. I played broadway style shows for a couple of summers and learned a ton! Your teaching style is very different than typical. In a good way.

Interesting perspective on buzz rolls. I have always done them without the "pulsing", aiming for a very smooth roll (Buddy Rich style). Pulsing was left just for accents. I'll give this a try. Great exercises and we'll played. It's not easy doing that at 140 bpm.

You frame the triplets/doubles/singles exercise as a direct benefit to buzz rolls. Could you comment more on this? It's a great sticking exercise no doubt (that's kicking my butt), but I'm wondering how to think about it in the context of buzz rolls.
Glenn, the triple stroke roll will work on your power and your control with the buzz. I was taught that to breakdown the buzz roll you should start with slow triples and gradually increase the speed, eventually allowing the sticks to buzz on the head. I don't subscribe to this method of teaching the buzz roll any longer, but I did find that working on the triple stroke roll has helped my power and control with my buzzes. The purpose of the triples/doubles/singles exercise is that it works on all 3 of your rolls in one concise exercise... And also, as you're learning, it's a fun butt kicker! 😂I hope that helps. My singles are pretty fast, my doubles are super fast (and solid). Why can’t a play triple stroke rolls are a reasonable speed..! It drives me demented 🤷🏻♂️ 🥁
It just takes time. Chances are you’ve spent a lot of time developing your doubles, if you spend as much time on your triples, they’ll come together! 🙌🏼

That's a weird traditional grip.
the rolls in the beginning sound horrendous though… my next door neighbor or any beginner does “buzz” rolls that yield each hand easily discernible. Getting them to sound even and completely devoid of pulsing between hands is what is hard.
