Our Church Choir feels so blessed to have commissioned Stephen to compose a piece for us before he had his massive stroke. The week he passed our choir joined hands during our rehearsal and sang this piece as a memorial to Stephen. A gifted composer and a beautiful person.
I have been singing and listening to choral music all of my life and the "Pilgrim's Hymn" is one of the most beautiful pieces that I have ever heard. This choir sings with such passion. Thank you for touching my soul!
I have only come across this beautiful piece of sacred music in the last couple of weeks. I can't get enough of it - and this recording is *so* beautiful! Thank you for sharing it.
PILGRIMS' HYMN Even before we call on Your name To ask You, O God, When we seek for the words to glorify You, You hear our prayer; Unceasing love, O unceasing love, Surpassing all we know. Glory to the father, and to the Son, And to the Holy Spirit. Even with darkness sealing us in, We breathe Your name, And through all the days that follow so fast, We trust in You; Endless Your grace, O endless Your grace, Beyond all mortal dream. Both now and forever, And unto ages and ages, Amen
Every time I hear this piece I tear up .Not just because I went to UWEC, but for the beauty and the story that Stephen Paulus has decided to share with us, mere mortals . It will be sung at my last farewll, along with " On the way home," another Stephen Paulus song .
been singing under Alan Heatherington and the Chicago Master Singers for more than a decade, Pilgrim's Hymn was on our Spring Concert repertoire, amazing, audience members reported that same feeling of being transported. The all acapella concert included 24-other selections, and the Tour Chorus is on the way to eastern europe with the same piece, can't wait to sing the Paulus again.
Dear Stephen, You have given us the sounds of angels for decades, Gloria in Excelsis Deo! Go in peace good and faithful servant. Rev. Deborah Lind-Schmitz

Yes, consonants are needed to articulate the vowels. I have no idea what the words are, and they do matter, not only tone. One cannot sing in English, especially American English with Italian vowel colors. The palette is very different.
This recording has a weird stereo separation, but I actually like the effect and the way it makes the voices blend. I really like this recording. But the fact is, this choir simply nailed this piece perfectly and sang it exquisitely.
My experience with Paulus was Musiquotes, which I disliked greatly and learned was not his best work. It's great to hear this and other songs (e.g., The Road Home) and know that he composed some beautiful music. I hope my choir does some of his work sometime soon. Very sad that he passed away at such a young age.
Camouflage Golf Ball I'm always amazed when I hear a low note that it sounds really low when it isn't in fact. When I mimic someone's low note, I realize it's not so low after all.
You should hear "The Road Home" by this same guy. Listen to the F keyed one not the F#, in the F keyed, the second to last note, the basses go down to a C and it sounds amazing. I think you would love it.

So little in life can match the elegance of a choral piece done in just the right place.
We sang this in church last Sunday. I'm blessed to belong to a choir that wants to do great music, and is capable of it.

When I hear and see this choir sing these wonderful hymns, I am proud to say that I am a graduate of UW-Eau Claire, Wisconsin
Exquisite. Thank you. RIP, Stephen Paulus, and live with the angels in joy.

Thanks for posting the lyrics!
This makes my ears happy and my soul rejoice! Tears... just tears...
One of my favorite choral pieces ever composed. Beautiful.
RIP. Stephen P this piece is a masterpiece
What a glorious God honoring piece of music in a unique and very attractive setting. This choir is doing this song great justice.
I get to sing this beautiful piece with my choir this summer. I can't wait!
How timely this hymn is in a fractured world! ❤
Such a beautiful performance of a beautiful piece in such a beautiful setting. I feel as if I've intruded on a moment of extreme divine intimacy...
That my friend is the calatrava in Milwaukee.
Beautifully performed with excellent dynamics and balance. Bravo to you all. Many thanks.

Perhaps you mean, "The Road Home"? Our choir had done both, many times, and I feel blessed to know this man's works.
Excellent performance of a gorgeous piece. So sad that he passed fairly shortly after this performance in October of 2014.

Congratulations!!! Nice performance in an outstanding place I'd love to visit someday!
Fantastic. Such a wonderful piece, sung by a wonderful choir. I teleport to a different place when I hear this song. Thank you.
Slice of heaven at 1:20, and the 10 or so seconds leading up to it...

Amazing. My spirit soars like hopeful seeds on a breeze...

this is beautiful choose this day whome you will shall serve. And I Choose Jesus
Wow! That's beautiful. Thanks.
This is flawless
SO HEAVENLY BEAUTIFUL
Amazing!
We’re doing it this year technically tomorrow in Concert I’m excited
This composition takes the listeners to that “thin place.”
Beautiful. Could only be made moreso with the smallest bit of word stress. It lives in a cloud of vowel. And it's a stunning cloud.

Omg! Celestial 💙
this is an excellent college choir!
Espectacular
true beauty

Spectacular
The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus did this piece last year and it’s BEAUTIFUL

Sn So Beautiful.
Lovely
Very nice recorded sound in this interesting choice of venue.
+Jack Taipala It works... GREAT resonance... which this piece needs... (sweet tune!)
Basses get an A for their low D at the end!
It's an F#. And it's not that low to be honest.
Camouflage Golf Ball I'm always amazed when I hear a low note that it sounds really low when it isn't in fact. When I mimic someone's low note, I realize it's not so low after all.

+Camouflage Golf Ball exactly
Where is this filmed? This is the most modern looking concert hall I have ever seen... o.O
Milwaukee Art Museum
I saw a recital by local opera students in this space a few years ago. A great venue.
It looks like in Milwaukee Art Museum, a very unique and striking landmark in Milwaukee on Lake Michigan
Yes, that's the place. This large space is often used for concerts.
I envy you! I'd like to participate it too.
The F# is crucial. Know that F#.
Altos twos working on this: can you sing F#???
I was dreaming when I wrote this, so forgive me if it goes astray...

Such an amazing piece. Its a disappointment your choir butchered such beauty.
