That's so great!!!!!!
The entire video I was thinking "oh no, she gonna be disappointed when everything is gonna fall apart in the end, because those methods don't work with natural clay"
I love working with natural clay, but the methods are just really different from the clay you're used to.
Exactly
any tips for working with natural clay? I could really use some xD
As some of the other comments say, you need to score and slip when attaching two pieces. Basically scratch both sides of the clay your attaching and add a little water in between them
Same same...-_-

Her name should be Miho, which is a Japanese girl name meaning beautiful fire.
Omg i love that name
I agree
That is the best name ever
Y E S its such a pretty namee
Omg yaaaaaaa
so i work with clay a lot, but i’m a ceramic artist so i don’t work with polymer clay. but from my experience and how you described the clay i wonder if it would survive a kiln firing. this clay seems to be just straight from the ground, and might be a stoneware clay.
also you were painting it in the bonedry phase, which is when it is at its most fragile. when clay enters bonedry it’s totally normal for it to shirk some since all the water is leaving the clay body.
you were doing great scoring and slipping your work but no matter how much you do it to the wooden base, it’s not going to stay/not crack. wood sucks up moisture from clay pretty quickly and it caused the base to dry unevenly and crack, clay really doesn’t like bonding with anything but itself.
Oof I added wooden boards to my Christmas list
@@puppeteerpuppet528 polymer clay does aye ok with wooden boards!
@@Dimpy2003AJ oh okay! Thanks for telling me that!
@@puppeteerpuppet528 no problem! always love to help when i can.
I just recently bought this exact brand of clay, and I was thinking about applying them onto champagne bottles to reshape them and add texture. Would the shape of the clay stay the same if I apply them onto glass?
When using clay like that, in ceramics too, you score each side of what you're sticking and then add slip to help join them. Slip is basically a glue made from the clay by taking the clay and watering it down into a paste. It'll help stick it all together and have a less likelihood to break
Oh, thank you, now i know how this called in English. In russian it sounds much more complicated than "slip"
Plessie Boi I thought that clay looked familiar 😆 I think that means the cracking is as much down to hot hands. I’m so bad at making pinch pots because of overworking the clay with hot hands.
Was literally bout to comment this as well cause i worked with this clay in school during art gcse 😂
I was just about to say that too. This is definitely the kind of clay pottery and clay art classes in school use. I wonder if this dollar store clay can be fired.
I mix 'LiquidNails' glue, water and clay it works wonders
Hey Jackie, you should recreate her some time with materials you'd usually use as a comparison!

1.Why are dragons good at story telling?
They have very impressing tails.
2.what did the dragon say when he saw the knight? " look tinned food! "
3.why is it easy to work out the weigh of a dragon? Because they come with scales.
Very punny mate
Heh that isss funny I like the third one the best >:3

😂😂 The one about the Knight is my favourite.
I'm pretty sure this material is like ceramic clay, you need to slip and score EVERY single thing that is added on, I used to take ceramic classes in highschool, and this was a very common issue with projects that weren't slipped and scored and were instead scored and applied with water, hope anyone using this material in the future can learn from this
Also, when dry it's super delicate because it's still weak until it's fired. I lost many pieces in college because of others breaking my greenware to make shelf space. SUPER SALTY. :/

For everyone who likes to know: you can take a moist towel and drape it around your project, then put it in a plastic bag. This way you can save your work and continue later :)
Love to see you work on natural clay Nerdy!
Agreed. In dry - very dry - environment, I'd dampen paper towel and loosely wrap clay, then place wrapped item in a plastic bag kinda' closed, but still open. Check item periodically, and if cracks forming or uneven drying, sprits with water and gently smooth. or prop bag open to speed drying, as needed.
@NerdECrafter a simple trick that I use when I make stuff out of a clay that is similar to this (ceramic clay) is I rub water into my hand periodically to keep them moist and hydrated so my hands don't absorb the water from the clay as quickly. Also it's a good idea to keep a spray bottle on hand if you want to work on another part of the same project. If the clay peices come a part after it dries, add just a little bit of vinegar to both pieces and let them bubble up a bit, then press the two pieces together firmly.
PS. I really love your videos!
Everything that’s perfect has its flaws that makes it different. The flaws is what makes it beautiful
I think you should name her Pele. Pele is the name of a famous Hawaiian volcano goddess who is known for being both a beautiful creation goddess and a destructive force of nature. I think Pele is a good name for her because your sculpture is both an adorable creation and was an absolute nightmare to work with :)
Um pele is allso a soccer player
The dragon looks like glowing ember. She is so pretty, so maybe just Ember since that alone is a pretty name
It would be a nice tribute too, since Dragons and Beasties kids name is Ember :)
Brilliant 😍
I always work a bit of lotion or hand cream into air dry clay when I work with it. Usually I'll coat my hands well and then knead the clay and reapply the lotion thickly to my palms once worked into the clay. For every egg or golfball worth of clay, maybe a quarter of a teaspoon of lotion. May not work for everyone, but it seems to extend drying time nicely, makes the clay more supple and workable, less cracks once dry, and I'm able to get more fine details into the piece.
I actually have a bunch of similar clay, and between watching this and reading the comments I am now less nervous about messing around with it. Thank you!
I would love to see a take 2 with actually polymer clay for this dragon. I would love to see you do it to the beast of your ability

This is actually the clay i'm most familiar with because we always used to use this in school.
When you scored it, did you make sure to score both pieces? You're supposed to, and scoring is supposed to look more like your grass texture with random lines. You're also supposed to add a little water from the tip of your finger on both scored sides, and once you put the pieces together you still have to blend them together.
I hope this helps you (whomever reads this) understand this style of a clay a bit better.
Guardian Dragon sadly I didn’t see her score and slip. Slip is like the glue that holds two pieces of clay together. I didn’t see her do that
@@BirbDaddyGram she did, she used water for the score and that should work for "air dry clay"
This is because this type of clay is not the best for details. It is bad for making small pieces since they crack and dry quickly but it is perfect for projects with a big size. It is also good for textures. It works best as a single big piece
@@BirbDaddyGram This is what I thought
I agree and your also supposed to make a slip ( water+clay mixed) to glue the peices together

A small spray bottle filled with water is handy for keeping the clay damp.
Just came across your channel recently and I’m loving it.
This looks so good Jackie!!!
Jackie, this is pottery clay. Meaning it goes into many stages: plastic, leather hard, bone dry, bisque ware, and glaze ware. Your piece was at bone dry which is very brittle and prone to braking. It has to go in a kiln and get fired for it to be strong-and it shrinks as you saw, because water.
This this this!!!!
But they market it as air drying clay!
I feel like water is bad but then it's good

Ceramics and sculpting was my favorite activity to do in my art classes in high school. Something to help your individual added on details (the under belly, the legs, the head, etc) is by making a slip solution. You literally just mash up clay with a bunch of water, and as you score the clay, apply the solution before sticking the on details. Another thing to avoid your clay from breaking while it’s being fired in a kiln, or an oven, is to make the fugue hollow. But you have to make a puncture site so the hot air inside the hollow clay piece can escape without exploding the figure.
Edit: I’ve also used that brand of clay before and I can confirm it’s terrible and not worth wasting time and energy on. I tried absolutely everything to prevent it from cracking and falling apart. It’s just a bad clay in all honestly. You’re better off spending a lot more money on high quality clay than the cheaper alternative.
You had the same advice I did!
Have you used DAS clay? I always wanted to try it but it was really expensive so my parents wouldn't get it for me to try. I recently found some DAS kids' clay, and I grabbed some white and some green. Haven't used the green yet, but my 4yo used the white to make "fossils" by pressing toy dinosaurs into lumps of it. It hardened really nicely.
Yes, I agree with all of these points/tips!
I've studies ceramics and sculpting with clay for 2 years now and I can say that these tips right here usually do the trick, expessially with using the slip solution to stick on details.
I'm wondering if you just encountered a really bad batch. I bought some of this a few months ago despite having never sculpted because hey, what the heck. I was super impressed with it. I sculpted a jackalope out of it and was really impressed with how it held its shape and texture. Its dry now and I only had one issue with cracking, and it was in a particularly thin and oddly shaped area of one of the antlers.
This is the kind of clay we were required to work with in my ceramics class, and with this kind of clay. We were highly encouraged to use vinegar for smoothing instead of water. So if there is a next time, I would try that and see how it treats you.

When you're working with clay, you're going to have to make a slurry to use as glue. clay isn't going to stick together well just from water.
Morgan Wilkinson Take a pinch of the clay, put it in a tiny sealable container, and add water, mixing it until it’s roughly the consistency of fresh frosting.
Thank you! I work with different air dry clay, and this will really help !
I was like ANGRY when I saw the base started crumbling, like "HOW DARE YOU, CLAAAAY!" but then when the dragon broke I wanted to cry! I think your sculpture is definitely cute! You are very talented!
Why tho
I dont want to be mean, but: "Jackie you did it wrong!"
Natural clay is really special, and you must have some experience with it, it is sooo much different than polymer clay, natural clay can be fired which makes your piece much stronger, every piece of the sculpture has to blended together together, that is why the legs and other parts of your dragon fell off.
But if you know how to work with it, natural clay can be an amazing material to work with. But it was your first time working with it, you did great, i didn't know these things when i first started working with natural clay.
Pls just like so Jackie can see!!!👍👍👍
And the untreated wood sucked all the water out of the clay which made the cracking worse.
Thanks i didn't new that thanks you for the help 😁👍
Nope
I do loads of sculptures in air dry clay I recommend the clay from hobby craft it feels super nice to work with and really cheap and easy witch clay do you work with and where do you get it From? (>~●) I'm using it right now
@@nathiekupfer7269 Exactly, nutural clay is just really fine dirt basically, and polymer clay is a workable plastic that is why they are so different.
Jackie you can make something called airdry slip to fill in any cracks :) You put small amounts of clay and mix it with water till you get a clay paste and fill in the cracks and crevices.
Iam going to be making a big dragon using air dry clay and cant thank you enough for the inspiration :D

I know this is 3 years late, but I've been going on a binge of your content because it calms me through the seas of Subnautica. I normally don't post, but this hits a niche of a special interest of mine.
I find it so wild that this clay was sold as "Modeling clay" - Because it's not modeling clay! It's *Ceramic clay* - The best method for handling this clay is to work with it with a wet sponge beside you (Which allows you to wet your fingers and tools without over-wetting them, which prevents that "Slip n' slide" problem you kept running into), and then you're meant to fire it after it becomes bone dry.
It's so weird to think that the dollar store was selling a ceramic clay, because most people going to the dollar store aren't going to be able to fire it! And if people buy it because they're looking for a modeling clay, they'll be as disappointed as you were, because it's not meant for projects like the one you were doing. Which is a shame because it looked really cool.
The tell-tale signs of ceramic clay vs modeling clay is - When you touch it, does it leave a chalky residue on your finger when it dries? Ceramic clay! If not, then that's modeling clay.
The chalky residue means it'll dry super brittle - All ceramics are super brittle when they're bone-dry.
Another detail about this clay, which would help you to avoid the problems you ran into while drying, is to slow-dry it - Which means to put it into a cabinet with a bucket of water to dry for a few days, loosely covering all the smallest parts (Like the horns and the add-on scales) with a loose plastic bag material. This prevents that intense and violent shrinkage you got where it cracked and tore itself to shreds, because it gives the clay a chance to dry at the same time. The body will actually dry slower than the smaller pieces, which means they're drying and shrinking down faster than the body is, so they'll rip themselves apart! This method is called putting the piece in a "Slow dry cabinet", as it helps you to control the moisture content of the piece much better.
This also means that you can't apply this clay to surfaces like wood, because it will always tear itself apart as it's drying (Dry wood doesn't shrink, but this clay always will!) and it also means that even if you successfully got a piece to stick to the wood, it would always be brittle until you fired it. In which case, the wood would be destroyed anyway.
The wood probably also dried out the clay landscape you made - Clay like this is super temperamental to moisture values, and wood loves to act as a sponge. It's why when you're drying a piece in a studio, you want to set it on a plastic or metal or even painted surface, which would repel the moisture much better, letting the moisture gradually escape out into the air, resulting in a more even and controlled drying phase.
Also, similarly to the wood stand, you couldn't use toothpicks to hold together parts of this piece - You'd have to use metal inserted into the piece (Or form the piece around a metal body), because it would be able to withstand the heat of being fired. I've used paperclips and shaping wire for some of my pieces that are thin but long, like swords! They love to crack and crumble to pieces, and that wire gives them the strength and support to hold it together.
Lastly, in pieces like your dragon, you would run the risk of it exploding in the kiln! This is because the body is one large piece of a single chunk of clay with no holes for air to escape through. Air bubbles get trapped inside and then they expand while heated up in a kiln and then they explode! I highly recommend making a "Bubble" - Which is two pinch-bowls adhered together as a sphere - to make bodies with - That way, when the piece is leather-hard and you're done with everything, you can poke your air holes into it and give the air a way to escape while firing. You can manipulate it much like you would a regular hunk of clay - You can roll it out to get that longer shape and everything.
I hope this incident didn't put you off to working with ceramic clay! It's really fun and exciting to get to work with, and I'd love to see what you could make with it! Glazes create some of the most gorgeous glassy effects, because glazes actually turn to glass that conforms to the piece! The science on ceramics is super fun and wild. Some glazes are food-safe, others aren't. The ones that aren't are GORGEOUS on sculptures like this - And I think you'd really love getting to use them! You paint them on and they turn into a powder, and then you fire it and it comes out as glass! If you're more like me and you like to paint your pieces by hand, you can also use Underglaze, which allows you to paint exact colors into their exact placement on your pieces - Underglaze is designed to be used under a clear glaze, so all your pretty colors and designs can really shine through!
All in all, ceramic clay can be hard to learn to use, but it's definitely a rewarding medium that's super cool. You'd be amazing at it too, I have no doubt.
Wow, that was a very informative read! Funny enough, I bought the same Dollarstore clay as NerdECrafter not too long ago and was thinking of doing the same kind of figurine project 🙂Can I ask what you meant about the "Slow dry cabinet" method? Are you supposed to put a vessel of water beside the sculpture piece loosely wrapped in plastic so that it draws a bit of that moisture while it dries? I'd like to try to avoid the tragic cracking and shrinking Jackie ran into with this type of clay 🤞😅
I loved this little.dragon
She is beautiful.
May I make a suggestion? Next time you work with air dry clay. Let it set slowly in a cool place with a wet towel or.even paper towel in a cool place. And.as soon as its dry put a coat of mod podge on it. That has worked.for me. I love your work and the salty way you present it.
I felt that pain of the dragon breaking, like I yelled "Nooooo" once it happened.
Yoooo Jackie, this "air dry clay" seems to be acting a lot more like standard mixed pottery clay. The soft but firm out of the package is akin to a stage of clay called Plastic. This is the darkest in color most moldable and fixable of the stages. The white on your hands is par of the course as your hands will suck out any moisture that the clay has while working with it. It's best to have a spray bottle on stand by to keep all parts of your piece evenly moist. Even the base. Another thing abt pottery clay is that it won't just stick to each other like polymer clays. It needs to be scored and smoothed to the base then re-carved out from there. While yeah you'll lose some of your sick grass texture, this is how this type of clay works. You can be cheeky and have toothpick stand inserts but both pieces of the project have to be Plastic for them to dry properly. The complete crumble at the end is due to the moisture levels being different at the end. Its a terrible way to lose your time but it was a sick sculpt while it lasted my guy. Heres to the next one built upon your learnings from this :D!
That’s what I was thinking because I took ceramics in high school last year and I was thinking that the clay looks just like the stuff we used in there
lillystl3 Yeah same, it's weirdly similar. I actually did make a dragon in Ceramics class, although he also broke a good amount, and I really did notice the differences in how working with it felt, especially with how much I needed to score the clay for it to stick. It definitely helped to keep my hands damp but not to over water the clay, which I think is why you got the soap texture. Also namewise, (I'm sorry for odd spelling) maybe something like Anyshia, Anagma, or Maya? Idk I'm just throwing random stuff out XD
Yes! I recognized the texture from my high school ceramics courses but I was looking for somebody who knows more about it than I do. I just remember that it's pretty tricky to work with if you don't know what you're doing.
BEK d that’s what’s I was thinking, it looks really similar to what I would use in art class to make pottery
I thought the exact same thing. I took a ceramics class in college and that "air dry clay" not only looks like normal white clay but it acts the same way as well.
Roll your pieces about 1/4 inches thick, definitely use a foil filler on thicker pieces it will all dry at a more even pace. Make slip to glue the pieces together. Dried clay mixed with water and a little white glue. I think it looks great. The head has a turtle look and is unique. You did a great job

Me: wait a minute, clay has gluten? Can i eat it?
I'll check uwu
Haha, actually, there is medicine with clay in it
Technically yes if it's natural clay but it'll just taste like dirt
KatieKoo- KooHead I can't find clay rip
Francesca Hernández NO
We used that clay for art projects in elementary school 😂
I was going to say the same thing - it is just like the clay we used in school when I was a kid. And this turned out WAY better than anything I ever made there - I think she is cute,
•The Fluffy Cat• same😂
Is a durable you did such a great job I love those kind of dragons they're so cute
I’ve been sculpting for like a year and what she made when she first started is still better than my sculptures
my jaw dropped when that slid of and broke. shes so cute and for a name Kilauea after a Hawaii volcano
It's perfect
Lol I use to use this clay for high school projects alot. I learned all the stuff that you did plus the $1rama brush that youu got were for watercolour paints. Red is watercolour. Black is for acrylic. And when it came to painting I hate that I soak up the paint so I just used a transparent Gesso. The Gesso gave it a thin coats like a skin, so it was less likely to break, what it did decide to break, E3600 was my friend at the time. You could use super glue but I find that stuff s pain.
Here’s some helpful hinds I wish I had when working with air dry clay. If you want to take your time use a damp paper towel to wrap your project in. Keeps the clay nice and damp. And I like having either a wet towel or more wet paper towels for my hands. To help with the cracking. And not allowing my hands to get white and dry.
For the sake of what Jackie knows and for her talent I believe she did well. Way way better then me. I don’t do dragons. But I love to watch your crafting videos. They’ve helped me so much in the last year and half.
Jackie what’s your favorite colors? What are Sikas favorite colors?
I used this clay at school and I think if u put it in those big oven thingys made for clay. And it turned out fantastic!!
I gasped when the poor dragon fell off and everything started to crack! :(
When I was watching the painting be done, I wasn't sure how it was going to come out. Then it actually came out very cute!
Please recreate this with high end materials! ❤️🔥
This is my favorite sculpture Jackie has made 🖤
It helps if you have a squeezie bottle xx and if u make a wee bowl out of the clay and add watter to it it will make cement to hold the wee parts xx

"...was like going out jogging in 6 inch heels while running with a wedgie." made me laugh so hard 😂😂😂
Wait were did she say that
@@PixieStyxies At about 19:40
15:30 and I dead omg 😱 I cried with you . I was so hurt at that horror clay but I was like at least she got the dragon 😭🙏🏾
If you make a paste with a small amount of the clay mixed with almost equal parts water and a teaspoon of white school glue. You can then brush that all over the completed sculpture before drying
