Hi DBA. Over here in the UK, we don't have moon pies, but we do have something called wagon wheels, that I think may be quite similar. I just posted a second ago, they are trying to develop a CVS loyalty community. They want regular shoppers to exploit the rewards system to the fullest and buy a lot and pay less. Yeah hmmm. If it buys them pharmacy loyalty, it might pay off, because I can walk to Walgreens so why would I drive to CVS?
Love the channel. I'm really interested in some shelf stable dehydrated meals. I'll be using them for ultralight backpacking. Really hope you make some videos regarding them soon. Thanks again
Back in the early 90’s due to circumstances beyond my control, I used to (have to) shop at the local Rite Aid drug store (it was a proximity thing) and I found that it had a really good food section and they weren’t ripping off the customers. The counter/register lady told me that they did a huge volume of business from the ‘grocery’ section. It’s too bad that I recently started seeing where these stores are shutting down for various reasons I won’t get into. They do fill a void in many neighborhoods similar to the $ stores that are also downsizing 🤷♂️
I never was a fan of CVS, waaay too high for me. I'm glad you liked the pasta because it really did look good and that's such a doable container. Aaaahhh, moon pies! Was raised in Mobile, moon pies and Mardi Gras, oh the memories! I'll be adding those to my grocery list 😂 Thank you for another great video and I really appreciate all the "research" you're doing for us!
Its funny, I am in my late 40s, I have seen moon pies in stores for most of my life... however, I have never tried one. I think my earliest memory of seeing one was during a family reunion trip to Oklahoma back in the 80s or 90s. Not sure why, but they just never really grabbed my attention enough to say I wanted to try it. Might have to now, so at least I can say I know what they are. Great video, thanks again! 🍻
My local Walgreens has better pricing, a wider selection, and much better sales on similar items than CVS. Often a buy two get one free. Nicely done sir.
@@dadbudgetadventuresThe idea is to get at the free stuff by more or less couponing which is best if you join and use their loyalty program. They want to lock in customers and be their first not their last choice to buy things. I'm still hella skeptical but they understand that (unless for convenience) you will not pay $7 for an ice cream, but you will buy a $7 ice cream if you get $5 off.
One thing with CVS is they overbought property, many mergers and acquisitions, so have lots of redundancy; I often thought they should dump sites and consolidate.
On the plus side, toss that typical CVS receipt in your fireplace and you can heat your house for a week. I don't see how a CVS that is in close proximity to a proper grocery store sells any everyday grocery items (milk, bread, etc) when their prices are so high.
@@dadbudgetadventures A lot of what's wrong in the store is the fault of terrible corporate policies. The pharmacy staff is pretty hamstrung as to the number of staff and the systems they are provided with. If the local pharmacist was allowed to run the pharmacy you'd see better service.
It is an accepted fact in the convenience store industry what the store is really selling. Many people are willing to pay an average 30% premium to avoid a walk across a large parking lot, cruise around a mega-store, wait in line and hike back to the vehicle. What you pay for, if you choose to, is the ability to park near the store entrance, run in and grab a coffee, a pack of cigabutts, and perhaps a few other small items such as a roll of TP, loaf of bread or a jug of milk and be on your way in a few minutes. My first wonderful Bride and I were close to franchising from a well known chain. We did not like the corporate culture. Franchise owners did not have to put up with all the companies shenanigans. In the end, we chose not to go forward with the opportunity because we kew we would still need some support from from "the system" that was in place.

Just jumping in on your CVS price issue. I was a contractor for CVS some time ago and it was explained to me how they justify or mitigate this. What they are setting out to do is recreate themselves as next thing to a lifestyle company, or at any rate, to break you of the habit of only going there on rare occasions when you need a drug or a pair of shower shoes and don't care what you pay for it. They are leaning into is these reward and loyalty programs. Apparently, their model is to jack up retail for the walk-ins, but if you swallow the flavor aid and become a CVS groupie, between your discounts and your coupons and your points, you can apparently achieve some big scores. At least this is broadly how I understood it from the casual chat between machines.
CVS is one of those chain stores/pharmacies that will probably not be in existence 5 years from now. We have one 3 miles from us and customers are almost non-existent there. The out-of-towners shopping there are probably what is keeping them from closing their doors.
The skippy thing looks like an uncrustable sandwich that got smashed in the cooler. That Parm Crisp combo, I am glad you tasted it to confirm that is a nope. Alfredo=Mac and cheese after it grew up. Looks like a small portion for a meal for hiking. I think moon pies would be bad for an MRE because the outer layer melts too easy in regular conditions. Put in a non climate controlled hot environment, you will have a mess
That’s one of the things about building these yourself is you have to consider where it’s going to be stored and where it’s going to be used. Things like chocolate have to be considered because in hot weather it’s gonna be nasty.
There are only so many stores around, when the list gets thin you might try bending the rules a little. Two I can think of that would be interesting are an MRE that is the best of the best (you favorite for each of the items no matter where they came from). Another one would be the budget entry, like as inexpensive as you can put one together and still be good (again not necessarily all from the same store but concentrating on keeping it inexpensive).
So I’m a member of CVS extracare rewards. It 5.00 a month, then they give you back a 10.00 coupon each month. Then as you purchase your meds or other products you get additional rewards and discounts on their app. So once a month I go on the app and search the ads and coupons available. I usually make a 50.00 or so purchase that ends up costing me 13-18 dollars. So you have to use there system to get stuff cheap. I buy things like vitamins, medicine, coffee, wound care products, shampoo. Stuff that has a coupon and is on sale. This month I got two medicated nasal sprays and 2 bottles of vitamins for 13.00. The retail was over 50.00.
I’ve heard a few people comment that you have to learn to use their coupon system to make it worthwhile. Seems like an odd strategy given their customer facing prices.
@@dadbudgetadventures I agree with you! It took me a bit to learn to take advantage of it. However homeland and dollar general does the same thing. I’ve saved thousands of dollars over the years learning to take advantage of the system!!
I live in the American southwest and we see a lot of triple digits in temps so I have to be careful with what I get because it will melt when out hiking or camping
Hey DBA! I don't know if anyone else checked. I saw that Skippy pie for about $16 for 4 on the manufacturer's website, and $3.49 at Dick's Sporting Goods. So, a pretty expensive option no matter what.
I tried the Great Value pulled pork on precooked sticky rice (Bibigo brand from Costco) and it totally made the grade. I love moon pies! Specifically banana flavored. Seems like I'm in the minority, however.
How was the texture on that pasta? I'm usually disappointed by packaged pre-cooked pasta because of how mushy it is. But everything I've had was packaged in the sauce. I'm curious if keeping the sauce separate made it less mushy.
The pasta you get pre-cooked on its own is usually pretty firm. Sometimes it can be too firm for what some people are used to. This one was just about right.
Moonpie put out a Special Edition box during the Solar Eclipse back in April. The box said " Solar Eclipse Survival Kit" . Pretty Cool Marketing idea at our HEB in Texas. They were Chocolate Mini Moon Pies. Probably just enough to make you mad, if you didn't include 2 into your MRE. 😂😂😂
CVS is expensive, but they run good sales and if you stack sales, coupons, and extracare bucks, you can get some things dirt cheap. It all depends on the item.
I used to buy the drink mixes at dollar stores all name brands but they started to taste bitter. well, I looked at the ingredients and they all had aspartame in them. This remind me of diet pop that to me taste bitter and have aspartame in them also. I always read the ingredients and look them up before I buy drink mixes. Not all are toxic or at least highly toxic (like aspartame) but are not loaded with sugar sometimes. I would recommend Folgers, Maxwell House, or Nestcafe tasters choice (for those who like richer coffee) coffee packets. I don't know about contents or sugar amounts I just like their tastes. Also, I like the coffee packets in MREs with the coffee mate creamer and sugar packets that come with them too.
I try to use those things as little as possible given that I don’t care for artificial sweeteners as a rule. It’s hard to find things I really enjoy when it comes to drink powders.
My family didn't buy moonpies when I was little. (I'm in my sixties) I don't think I've ever tasted one..🤔 I'd like to know what Mrs DBA thinks of the protein moonpie. 😄
I love banana moon pies. Love, love, love. Pomegranate is also one of my favorite things, to bad things were more up to par. I'd love it if you would do a taste test for some of "keep for 25 years" foods. Basically just add water packed foods. I'm not sure if you've done it on your channel but have you ever highlighted old MRE, like actually products or pictures. Even the new MREs ... Thanks for your videos
I am enjoying your videos. Have you ever made an MRE using products from a convince store? (Buccee's does not count!) Like a Thom Thom, 7-11, Stop and Go, AM/PM, Terrible Herbst? In my area, some of these places have a great variety of prepackaged entries and snacks.
I live in Las Vegas, so some of our convince store have morebitems than most. Liquor, wine, beer, olives, etc plus all the little cans of pasta etc. It was just an idea😂 @@dadbudgetadventures
Well done sir, chocolate Moon pie for me, with a RC cola. I say the next with respect, with your current hair and beard style, you remind me of Wolf man Jack, which I met in person many years ago.
Protein bars are good but most of the ones I have seen have as much if not more sugar than a candy bar. I'd call those a desert more than anything else by the nutrition values. CVS had those absurdly long receipts in my area like a almost six foot some times. Guess they had to hike the prices up to cover the cost of all those receipts they gave out.
I hate to ask but could you take this out to field? Every time I put a Moonpie in my car to go on an outing, it melts. I have to be desperate to eat a Moonpie like that. The peanut butter pie might be the answer to that problem. Cheers!
I wouldn’t recommend that moon pie for much of anything. The PB pie however, would probably be a good option. Although anything left in a hot car is gonna suffer loss of quality.
Not a moon pie fan, unless it's paired with one of the tiny bottles of Coke. Then it's pure nostalgia. Love the video and the content, and I agree CVS is way overpriced!
@@dadbudgetadventures ive been offended by them for quite a long time. Their business model is absolutely disgusting. They take advantage of customers either in markets where there are very limited options, or their main business is in prescription drugs (who are mostly seniors) and take advantage of convenience sales that go along with it.
Today's moon pie is surely not the ones we had when I was a kid (what is, right?). Can you even get a grape Nehi anymore? Distant memory. Now you have high fructose corn syrup or sorbitol or sucralose. Garbage. Let alone the crap oils or gmo wheat. Frustrating. All that said, I do enjoy your content.
Thank you. Unfortunately the things we had as kids don’t really exist at all anymore thanks to all the substitutes in ingredients. It’s nice when they occasionally come out with “original recipe” items and you can at least get a little taste of the past.

Thank you for doing these. Can you do a best of video from what you've tested so far? Please and thank you!
I am definitely going to do an ultimate MRE before long. Gotta revisit my videos and see which items I’m going to choose!
I live in the American southwest and we see a lot of triple digits in temps so I have to be careful with what I get because it will melt when out hiking or camping
For sure. That’s why I’ve been trying lately to find things that won’t melt or are at least resistant to it. Chocolate is a no-go right now.
Hey DBA! I don't know if anyone else checked. I saw that Skippy pie for about $16 for 4 on the manufacturer's website, and $3.49 at Dick's Sporting Goods. So, a pretty expensive option no matter what.
Oh wow, that’s steep. Even for a protein bar that’s a lot!
I tried the Great Value pulled pork on precooked sticky rice (Bibigo brand from Costco) and it totally made the grade. I love moon pies! Specifically banana flavored. Seems like I'm in the minority, however.
Oh that does sound great! I think you have more on your side than you might think!
I don’t buy at CVS! But a good video
I don’t see a need to go back, that’s for sure.
@@dadbudgetadventures Thanks! I'll give it a try.
Good morning DBA....that Skippy bar surprised me, looked like a hamburger bun someone ran over😅 thanks for another great video❤
Fortunately it tasted better than it looked 😂
Moonpie put out a Special Edition box during the Solar Eclipse back in April. The box said " Solar Eclipse Survival Kit" . Pretty Cool Marketing idea at our HEB in Texas. They were Chocolate Mini Moon Pies. Probably just enough to make you mad, if you didn't include 2 into your MRE. 😂😂😂
That’s marketing genius right there!
CVS is expensive, but they run good sales and if you stack sales, coupons, and extracare bucks, you can get some things dirt cheap. It all depends on the item.
Yeah I’d have to have some serious coupons before I’d do this one again 😬
Me too with the sweeteners thing for sure
looks good
Thanks!
My family didn't buy moonpies when I was little. (I'm in my sixties) I don't think I've ever tasted one..🤔 I'd like to know what Mrs DBA thinks of the protein moonpie. 😄
She agreed with me that it was way too sweet. She didn’t care for it.
Happy Sunday to you and yours❤
Thank you. To you as well!
Got them "moon pies" here in CA. Love em
I’m surprised they are in CA. I wouldn’t have guessed that.
@@dadbudgetadventures I'm not sure, but I get them from my military commissary. Haven't made an overt attempt to lokk. Maybe bad on my part.
I love moon pies.
I’m not a huge fan but I get hit with a craving here and there and there’s nothing that can substitute for it.
Early on I did some storable food tasting but I need to revisit that.
ANOTHER FUN VID DBA, HOPE U N YOURS HAD A GOOD 4TH AND WEEKEND....Z....
We did and we have all of our digits intact. Although it got sketchy at times 😂
@@dadbudgetadventures GREAT, A GOOD THING FOR SURE..LOL, FUN THO.....Z
Did they have tuna packets? As a substitute for the chicken ?Were those more expensive?
They did but they were all pre-seasoned in flavors that I didn’t think would work with this.
I’ve tried a couple places like that with no luck but I’m always looking wherever I go now. It’s kinda become my natural rhythm.
I live in Las Vegas, so some of our convince store have morebitems than most. Liquor, wine, beer, olives, etc plus all the little cans of pasta etc. It was just an idea😂 @@dadbudgetadventures
I grew up in Chicago I had moon pies all the time the only reason is my mom was born in Kentucky I love moonpies.
Sounds like mom raised you right!
@@dadbudgetadventures thank you she did and my daughter loves moon pies too
Moon pies are a god send (= Even my mom used to eat them with RC cola (= THanks DBA!
You’re welcome. Thanks for the constant support!
@@dadbudgetadventures you got it bud. Happy to do what I can to help!
I can see where that might be a little more at CVS How about more truck stops like Holiday, Tesco or 3 bears ( in Alaska)
I have made an attempt at a couple tuck stops with no luck but I’m going to keep trying.
Well done sir, chocolate Moon pie for me, with a RC cola. I say the next with respect, with your current hair and beard style, you remind me of Wolf man Jack, which I met in person many years ago.
I’ve gotten that a time or two. How amazing to have met such a legend!
It’s like they own the trees they use for all that paper 😲
Moon pies are awesome 👍👍
Lots of nostalgia there
I only go to CVS because I work nights and it is open 24-7. I will pick up snacks or something I really need now.
Yeah I certainly would not go out of preference.
I usually only buy food items at CVS when on sale...if it's a GOOD price.
Yeah this was so much more expensive than it needed to be.
❤❤
😎
Love moonpies❤
They certainly have a strong fan base. That’s probably why they made these things, so they can grab that audience.
Not a moon pie fan, unless it's paired with one of the tiny bottles of Coke. Then it's pure nostalgia. Love the video and the content, and I agree CVS is way overpriced!
Nothing beats a trip down memory lane!
I never learned to like Moon Pies.
They aren’t for everyone. Gotta love marshmallows.
could always throw in a pack of gum... =D
For sure. Just like old times.
Where are the Vienna sausages?
Still on the shelf 😂
Those are horrible. I'm not even sure they are dog food quality.
RC cola and a moon pie...
The South’s ultimate treat
at some point in time you should make a 24 hour MRE
I did one a little while back from Walmart. I do want to revisit it though and make one that isn’t limited in source.
Moon pies are big in Korea
Really? I would not have guessed that
you give me ideas
Then I have done my job, thanks!
i avoid buying anything other than prescript meds from drug stores because of the ridiculous mark ups
I’d definitely stay away from CVS then! Those people are crazy.
The price is exactly why i never go to cvs, unless i have no other reasonable option. Cvs is one of those corporations i have zero love for.
I was honestly shocked at how blatantly high their prices were.
@@dadbudgetadventures ive been offended by them for quite a long time. Their business model is absolutely disgusting. They take advantage of customers either in markets where there are very limited options, or their main business is in prescription drugs (who are mostly seniors) and take advantage of convenience sales that go along with it.
I never shop at CVS!
I can safely say I probably won’t be back.
The only pharmacy worse than CVS is Walmart. The two completely suck
To be fair I’ve never been to a pharmacy that seems to have it together. They seem overly complicated for what they are.
How about an MRE from 7-11?
I don’t have them nearby but if I see one I’ll give it a go.
Never buy anything full price at CVS, gotta coupon 😆
For real!
Sad considering ccvs means consumers value store
Yeah they may be reaching a bit
Can't stand Moonpies at all.
@@BarbosaUral
👍🏻 Way too sweet for me and the taste is artificial
@@alanbierhoff6831 I agree.
Yeah, well this is worse 😬
👍👏🏻👍😂👍
😎
Today's moon pie is surely not the ones we had when I was a kid (what is, right?). Can you even get a grape Nehi anymore? Distant memory. Now you have high fructose corn syrup or sorbitol or sucralose. Garbage. Let alone the crap oils or gmo wheat. Frustrating. All that said, I do enjoy your content.
Grape Ne-Hi and Lance peanut butter crackers or banana moon pie and a yoohoo. Childhood right there! 😊
Thank you. Unfortunately the things we had as kids don’t really exist at all anymore thanks to all the substitutes in ingredients. It’s nice when they occasionally come out with “original recipe” items and you can at least get a little taste of the past.
We just missed July 4th but maybe a contest between your Family on who can put together the best Red, White and Blue mre, using your same rules? A Themed MRE Party. ❤️🤍💙🎉
What a cool idea! Something for next year.
