  • Christie’s is delighted to announce Charlie Watts: Gentleman, Collector, Rolling Stone, a two-part auction comprising an extraordinary library of modern first editions together with landmarks from the world of jazz, collected by renowned musician and Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts (1941-2021). The flagship auction, Charlie Watts: Literature and Jazz Part I, will take place live in London on 28 September, with a Part II online sale open for bidding from 15 to 29 September.
Leading the live sale is a first edition of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, inscribed by the author to the ‘original “Gatsby” of this story, with thanks for letting me reveal these secrets of his past’. Charlie’s outstanding literary collection features iconic works of detective fiction by Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle alongside the very best English and American literature of the 20th century. Other notable highlights include a George Gershwin signed printed score of the legendary opera Porgy and Bess and a pair of Down Beat awards from 1952 presented to Charlie Parker, as well as signed photographs and rare acetate recordings from the jazz and musical hall of fame.

He was a true English gentleman. And boy a very serious book collector. And his iconic drum set. With no children and bo family o5her than his immediate family it would be time to sell his collection for the serious collector. May he rest in peace as well as his wife.

If I was his daughter, I would have kept her dad's iconic drum set. That would have been priceless to me.

This might have had more views and interest if you'd given some context either as subtitles or commentary. For example: one of Charlie's books, a signed first edition of 'The Great Gatsby' sold for £226,800. The dog earred collection fetched £3.8m in total.

His drum set was never flashy in the true sense of rock drummers. It was functional and basic like Ringo Starr’s........and I guess that is where the less is better thought comes from with Charlie’s drum set....

If they ever have one of these auctions with Bill Wyman’s collection, there could be a ton of Stones things in that.

Charlie had only one musical love: Jazz, The Stones he saw as a regular job.

In his own words, Charlie Watts in no way considered his working with the Stones to be, “A regular job.”
To the contrary, Charlie loved his band mates and being a part of the RS.
It’s probably fair to say that Charlie preferred playing Jazz to R&R, all things being equal, but playing with the Stones is not an equal.
      Geez
