Looks great. Thanks a lot. It's strange how there is such limited competition when the improvements are so obvious. It's great to see someone has finally did it. This look by far the best manual aerator available.
Great point! However I can't see there will ever be a full "clog free" unit made anywhere - its the nature of clay soil, wet and sticky, but always open.. as others have said, some wd40 sprayed first in the tines will help
The aerator is brilliant. The plugs come out every time but if I was heavier (than 10st 7lb) I wouldn't have to jump onto the footrest which is wide enough to put both feet into. It may seem expensive but I think it is the best manual aerator I've used. Well done Shaun for the video.
I bought the Walensee after seeing your other video. It was ~£20 and did the job perfectly. Not sure I would have got 3 tines in to my soil, I've done a pass over my 85m^2 lawn and pretty happy with it, I guess that's a new yearly task!!!
A suggestion for us wimps: just fit the outer two tines. It's so much easier to push into the ground. Just overlap position to get the original tine gap.
My JNJ arrived this afternoon mate....the Amazon box it came in was big enough to hold 20 of the aerators plus enough paper packaging to stretch the length of my kitchen....LOL. Assembled it just now with no issues whatsoever and it looks like a very well built piece of kit as you said. Hoping to use it in anger back end of this week when we hopefully finally get some dry weather!!
@@LawnRightUsed the JNJ this afternoon on a test section of my back lawn (appx 4m x 2m - total lawn appx 10m x 10m) and it is BLOODY BRILLIANT. Absolutely no clogging and pierces the ground with very little force (damp sandy soil). Amazed when I looked close at a core to see very little grass/root depth so am hoping doing this followed by an overseed and top dress with Jack's Magic will make the world of difference....fingers crossed for a great lawn this year for the first time in years!!
Hi just saw a video on the best Manual Aerator I have ever seen. Looks like it could do your lawn in under 10 mins but only available in the USA. See if you can get hold of the Amick rollers for.
I have just found your channel and you give great advice. I have a lawn that I assume has lots of clay soil as it gets very boggy. I’ve never had a garden and recently moved and want the garden to be nice. My lawn is full of clovers and not much grass blades. What’s the best way to deal with this? Can I just aerate, seed and top dress it? I haven’t found many good videos on how to deal with a lawn that is mainly weeds/ clovers
Easily the best lawn expert I have come across, literally every common day grass. Issue covered and tbh over the years my lawn has driven me absolutely fkin nutty 😂😂😂😂 There literally isn’t any common day issue for 90% of viewers that he hasnt covered. I’ve a few questions off yoda himself 😂 to sort my lawn out but I will ask the GF has he dealt with a mushroom ring as I got lucky enough to encounter. Thank you though for clarifying everything I did do in my early years as a man was spot on and the lawn got respect but nowadays everything seems to be back firing so I will get in contact to see what the GF suggests.😢
😊😊. Hi.. Fork the ring deeply... Then get a bowl an dmix warm water with washing up liquid in it and pour it over the forked ring.. Repeat every few days but regularly an sit should improve in time... I also did a test at a lawn with turfsolv and again it did help
Have just ordered myself one as was looking at the other premium ones and agree that this looks like a decent alternative. Cant find the replacement tines for sale on amazon or his website but I assume he will be selling those too in the future. I like to have a spare set waiting in case I hit an issue half way through a job. Has he mentioned to you about when spare tines will be on sale?
I have Walensee, Yard Butler and some no name with two tines, but open ones. Someone posted on your group on facebook or other one and got for below 20 on amazon, its a brilliant one. Yes two tines only, but does the job, not sure how long will stay sharp, ends are not stainless steel. You could ask Andy from Lawn kit group buy to sent you one and make a test. Thanks for video, its really interesting to see how many similar models are out there, but again, different handle length, larger/ smaller tines.
Walensee kept clogging up on my clay soil so I upgraded to the Swardman. Tried it today and not much better. It has been a super wet winter and it rains almost every other day so the ground is always damp. Any tips on when best to Aerate? Like should I leave it until drier weather?
Hi it's easier when it's damper to push deeper.. But all of them leave soil inside the tines.. The anti clogging ones should eject previous soil up and out eventually but it doesn't happen on every push and that's never worried me. Even my machine does this
Hi Rich, they will all hold soil in them at times, and I wont feel anything is 100% anti-clog, sadly, but I typically just keep plugging away, eventually the older soil plugs drop out - not always on each push - but you can use a screwdriver at the end of each row to push out the soil, and spray some wd40 inside each tine before each time you use it.
Very informative but I would have liked to have seen you use it a bit longer especially to see how well the soil cores get ejected from the tines as you moved along. What was the name of the 2 other premium products called please?
Hi... yeah a few folks have said that.. apologies... this video will help ua-cam.com/video/evJW7lw_9Qk/v-deo.html - basically swordsman and landline are the other 2 brands
Do you have a contact for J&J. I bought the new aerator and i like it. I want to buy replacement tines and i contacted them via their website and was told replacement tines shoule be availibke in May. I checked today and the Aerator on amazon is no longer sold and the website also seems to have been taken down. Did they go under or do you have any idea whats going on?
Hi looks they've sold all the stock.. I looked yesterday on amazon an fit said selling at 200 units a month which is brilliant.. Find him here on Facebook m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100078901925173. He just put a post on there about selling out so it's done well.. As for tines he did tell me. A few days ago you can get them now.. He sent me this link amzn.to/4cVCv4O
The new JNJ aerator looks great, but unfortunately is not available to European customers. Last year I tried to find any vendor that would ship the Swardman or Landzie, but there was either no stock or not willing to ship. Ah...Brexit, the gift that keeps on giving. I eventually bought a budget 3-tine SattesGrün aerator for about €40 from Amazon, and it works great. It is similar to the Swardman, but with fixed tines. It works great and I was able to punch thousands of holes in my 200 square meter lawn in about an hour. It took me the rest of the day to pick up the plugs, but the transformation later in the year as the soil expanded into the holes was incredible. There was no more standing water after a rain or sprinkler session, and the roots for the newly sown grass was twice as deep as the original grass.
I bought an aerator last year (mid range). Its ok but I'm constantly having to pick out the soil deposits rather than them just popping out so I'm watching this with interest.
I honestly think most will clog, but most of the time the new plug should push the previous plug out, eventually, as it pushes up it hits a slope. Even with clogging I just carry on to be fair, its still making a hole
The AMICK RollAerator is perhaps one of the best manual aerators ever designed. It is effortless to use and 5 times faster than traditional hand aerators.
Great review and content. I need a new back after spending a few hrs with a cheap one. Oh my God, never again. I might try and make one. It'll cost me about £140 though!
I've received my JNJ and used it today and trust me, if you invest in this tool you won't regret it. I know it's £130 but spread that cost over 20 or 30 years, which is at least how long this thing will last (especially with replacement hollow tines available) that's an annual cost of £6.50 to £4.30 per year which is nowt if it helps us all have a healthy lawn....I'm a Yorkshireman by the way, like Shaun, so it really hurt spending this amount but I'll try and get over it!
Nice solid looking tool. I bought an off brand one from Amazon last summer that has 4 tines. Been working pretty well for me. I think they discontinued it though. Paid less than $100 if I remember right.
Looks like I've missed the JNJ bus. Tried to order one yesterday but they responded today to tell me there will be no stock until January 2025 and they are already reserved... I went Swardman

My lawn gets compacted from the dog and is walking on it
A more thorough demo would have been nice to see if the soil does actually come out surprised you didn’t show it and can you buy spare tines because I have clay soil with rocks at bottom of lawn
Hi I will be doing something more in depth soon. Sadly all aerators will clog due to clay soil being sticky.. The open tine design means it falls out easier when soil is pushed up.. Spare tines are being produced and will be available at his website jnjstore.co.uk.
I dunno about this one - the modest price difference doesn't feel enough to be worth the risk given it's still a substantial investment. At least the other 2 have an established track record of being reliable and have probably sold enough quantities to be able to buy replacement parts for many years in the future. Now if it was £99 with replacement tines at £10 each then it would easily be worth going for. I wish someone would go for the volume rather than the premium market on these. The website is still broken which isn't reassuring. The customer is investing in a hopefully long term relationship with a brand to provide spares not just buying a tool.
@LawnRight yh OK cheers mate, because its my first time getting one,I will go with a £40 one from amazon and then probably upgrade later on in the year 👍🏿👍🏿
@LawnRight ask your wife to use a white varnish on it (3 coats). That's apply 3 layers after each one dries. I explain this because I told you 2 years ago that my hubby is a Stroke Survivor (I use the term Survivor 'very' loosely) and he finds it hard to take information on board and keep it there. 2 weeks ago we went to pick paint. The trouble with these are, if you have a lawn larger than a postage stamp it becomes so tiresome … and then you sell it. x2 scarify my lawns a year but don’t bother with tines anymore, found it a waste of time and saw no difference to the grass.
