  • Today we’re speaking with Joseph Alexander, the man behind Fundamental Changes, the leading publisher of guitar books on Amazon with over 100 titles in their catalogue and over 150,000 copies sold last year. www.musical-u.com/learn/makin...
Joseph’s own backstory is a really interesting one and reveals some great insights about learning effectively in the modern era, whether self-taught or with a teacher. Fundamental Changes has been leveraging the dramatically changing landscape in the world of book publishing to provide exciting new opportunities for students - and potential authors!
In this conversation we talk about:
    - The three factors that helped Joseph go from struggling in learning music to really enjoying and improving consistently.
    - The specific advantages a modern indie publisher has over traditional book publishers and how that helps authors and students alike.
    - What their publishing process looks like when they work with a musician or music educator who has something interesting to say - and how different that is from the status quo in the publishing industry.
If you’ve ever wondered how a music book comes to be, or whether learning from a print book or ebook can really match up against in-person lessons or UA-cam videos - you won’t want to miss this one.
Fundamental Changes is currently seeking new authors - if you’re a musician or music educator with something interesting to share, be sure to get in touch via the contact form on the Fundamental Changes website!

Great interview. Joseph is doing great things for music education. The fragmented nature of UA-cam lessons is well made. Joseph’s story was really interesting and a strong - ‘just get out and play’ message. Long may it continue.

I really like melodic blues phrasing… it really digs down deep into how you actually create great phrasing more so than anything before I’ve studied.
It’s not just listen and feel he really gets to break down music and how you build it back up

I must say thank you Chris. This turned out to be a really fascinating interview with Joseph Alexander. As a guitarist, I was initially kind of turned off by the subject matter but by the end of the interview was very glad I did watch it. It certainly gave me an insight into the music teaching publishing world.

I was curious about who this Joseph Alexander guy is on Amazon. That really stuck with me when you guys talked about "learning what's in front of you" and in my case, not worrying about why I don't sound like Warren Demartini yet. Great content. Subscribed!

Joseph thank you for your book Guitar Chords in Context. I was a little unhappy at first that it took its direction towards jazz chords but now I'm hooked and was wondering what book I should buy next as there are many jazz books with fundamental changes. Cheers 👍

You mentioned Iain Scott. I met Mr Scott at the Guitar Institute and what an amazing rhythm player he was. Back then I thought guitar was all about noodling but he showed me otherwise

FYI, own maybe at least 10 of your books from amazon. Old lousy player, but always tried to support music. Sometimes I think I have too many sources and just cant get past page 10 on books all the time. Any hints? Thanks to you sir

Fantastic discussion. I love Joseph's ethos with regards to learning guitar. I have always learned in small increments, so I understand the theory behind it. Keep up the great work.
Is there still a market for new guitar tutorial books ? I have a structure for taking a potential guitar player from absolute beginner to advanced intermediate and I have aspirations to one day convey my structure in book form .

Curious, you related to the guy who hunted down Rudolf Höss? That was a great book as well

Someone's knocking at the door, somebody's ringing the bell. Do me a favour open the door and let them in. What mode is that in. Is it the friggery mode or what
