Could you imagine if there was a zombie apocalypse, and James' still running strong on his channel. Where he just takes video of the newly infected neighbors he finds around his house.
I've watched this 3 times and only just now realized that they actually thought of the six round capacity for the revolver, the police woman shoots two times before dying, they kill the guy who had his zombie wife with 2 bullets, and then they shoot 2 more zombies on the roof before they actually run out of ammo. That's what we call attention to detail

they are kinda zombies so if i saw a deer try to kill itself with my gun i would make sure it wouldnt shoot me before killing itself and then i would tear its flesh off
The zombies in this movie retained some intelligence from before they were turned, including how to open doors, and certain things they knew from, say, an occupation. The fireman is a prime example

Fun fact: When the lead character takes the “key” for the next apartment, that had to be the landlord with the master “key”. Here in Korea, the doors are all electronic code number locks.
The most important thing for me in survival horror is that the main characters make it out. I feel like after everything they've went trough they've earned their happy ending.
i love how he always makes one or two of the figures slightly different and references how they died when he’s counting up the kills. it’s a small detail but i love it
I appreciate the Billy Madison "LET'S GO!" reference you dropped in there at around 2:40! Also appreciate the Always Sunny references, Bowie love, and lots of other non-horror quips that you drop in your videos! They don't go unnoticed by me!
Let me guess.. knowing you will be seeing people harming “themselves” in advance will not trigger PTSD, but if it catches you by surprise, you will go into a Nam-like PTSD attack? Lol, alright.
I'll be honest, South Korean cinema is not known for happy endings. I breathlessly awaited the death of one of our 2 heroes. Happily, this film ended on a bright note. I think that is the extra boost that makes it an extremely enjoyable watch. Loved it!
Going into it, I was worried because I really enjoyed both heroes but I'd seen Train to Busan and still weep at the ending of that one. I'm glad Alive ended on a good note and with the hope that there's other survivors that will be rescued.
That's because the only foreign horror movies that you've heard about are good ones; it's selection bias in full force. It's the same reason why a lot of people think that older music is better, because they aren't currently subjected to the thousands of crappy songs that aired back then, and thus they only remember the good ones.
Actually, according to his phone at the end of the film, Joon-Woo's family actually survived. He ended up receiving several texts from them after their encounter with those zombies confirming they were okay. At least according to the translations I saw when I watched the film (and no, it wasn't the Netflix version since that one inconveniently doesn't translate the written text).
I recently watched this film and h then rewatched it twice. this is one of the first zombie films that actually made me feel really sad and a little bit empty inside. I think it’s mostly because of sympathy. But as a film, it’s a wonderful take on a zombie film. No badasses military men, no zombie slayers, just an average young man’s experience to survive an apocalypse. His safe space, his HOME is no longer safe. It’s a super refreshing zombie film.
Correction: The Main guy's family actually is still alive because at the ending of the movie, when he received signal again. He got messages from his family that there alive. So technically it's NOT 53 kills but, 49. Still many tho.
Wouldnt they be old messages cause his phone had no connection to receive them? Thus when connection was available any messages that he didnt receive before finally grt received?
It's hard to say I'm pretty sure the implication is that his family is still alive at the end. Even if there is no confirmation that they're alive there's also no confirmation that they're dead either. Also, I could be wrong but wasn't that woman that was overtaken in the hall just a hallucination? At least that's what I thought when I saw it.
Well, technically the male main character in this movie (and likely the female) where in the military (Korea has an all males serve conscription system), so that’s probably a good part of it. If you want more, Israel also has an all citizens serve, and militia service for males is compulsory in Switzerland. Those might be some cool places to check out
Who's going to school during a friggin pandemic? Dumbass politicians clearly don't understand the definition of a pandemic. Also Scarlet is asking a real questions who the f*** commutes during a goddamn zombie apocalypse
Actually wouldn't mind James covering more international horror movies/shows, including Asian horror! It's from James that I was introduced to the REC series and to Blood Quantum, and it'd be a great way to expose fans to lesser-known/underrated horror movies/shows (like Goodnight Mommy)! ^^
@@therealheavytf2 It's an Austrian psychological horror movie about twin boys that become suspicious if their mother is really their actual mother (or possibly an imposter) after she undergoes some reconstructive surgery on her face. This movie is just beautiful. It really captures the dark, violent part of human behaviour. It makes you feel for the characters, and very few movies were able to do that in recent years. And that ability directors can make actually makes the movie itself better 100%. And what I mean by it making you feel for the characters I mean that when they have feelings of joy, you feel it. When they are in moments of despair, you feel it. That's what good horror movies make them good horror movies.
" It really captures the dark, violent part of human behaviour." In what way besides maybe that mini subplot with the guy trying to feed his wife with humans, which is just tragic love, not just dark and violent.
I thought it was reviled at the end of the movie that his family was alive and made it out. It was confirmed in the last couple minutes of the film when they get to the choppa!
Yeah, came down here to say the same thing. His family survived and their whole mantra of "stay alive and survive" had a bigger meaning to the audience and to the main character. This coincides with his whole plan of killing himself which if he would have succeeded (and not honor his mothers wishes) they would still be alive and found his dead body at their place. They for sure survived.
James: “Watches a confused mother reunite with her scared daughter.” James: “Awe that’s nice.” James: “But then the daughter becomes a zombie and bites her mom, killer her.” James: “That’s not nice.”
I thought for sure if he said it in the video after the numerous times he pinned the email comment that people would finally get it. Oh the faith I have in humanity....
Boomers: "Phones are bad for you" #Alive: "We used social media to locate all the survivors by making them take a picture of where they are and how they are doing"
For the record, the movie is also heavily based on a korean webtoon called "Dead Days" from 2014. One of the prominent elements would be the food basket on a line for example.
James is by far one of the best youtuber personalities out there, he actually apologized for not making a video on a foreign movie cuz of the lack of cultural knowledge AND apologized for his lack of cultural knowledge... I love you James
@Thomas Sadler i agree it got delayed because the internet was down like real messages but he gets it at the end because he got a random internet connection
@Thomas Sadler They were not killed in the recording. Read the official plot. It reveals his family made it. Otherwise whats the point of him receiving that message at the end
I love how there's now more asian horror films coming to the west. I really liked "Kingdom" and "Train to Busan", too. It kind of feels like "the east" is now entering that weird "zombie"-phase that the west was going through around 2010. But that might just be my confirmation bias because I like zombie stuff and specifically only sought out that genre.
Actually, from my experience being south east asian i can tell you a few things that may have lead to the Eastern Zombie Genre. Up until recently most people on the far east despised the idea of putting death and/or undeath in media. Death of any kind is heavily censored in media outside of news reports and obituaries cos of the negative stigma surrounding spreading news of death. It has taken YEARS of slow wear and tear on the "traditional" view of death in countries like China and South Korea by the new generation to allow for zombies to be part of their entertainment.
About you "attacked by another larger zombie, an interesting idea that sadly never gets revisited". I think that bigger zombie thing was setting up his door fridge barricade being destroyed by the bigger zombie at 5:50 So it wasn't mostly fruitless...

Just zombies trying to contribute to society
Actually, according to his phone at the end of the film, Joon-Woo's family actually survived. He ended up receiving several texts from them after their encounter with those zombies confirming they were okay. At least according to the translations I saw when I watched the film (and no, it wasn't the Netflix version since that one inconveniently doesn't translate the written text).
Agree, i saw the same, maybe he didn't notice that part
Yep
Its fine guys
Aww, his family survived? Dats nice!
@@yanderekfcwaifu4524 Nah, this is a mistake worthy of unsubbing. Deadmeat is Dead to me.
I was gonna make the same comment thanks for that
Wouldnt they be old messages cause his phone had no connection to receive them? Thus when connection was available any messages that he didnt receive before finally grt received?
James did counted the netflix cut not the directors one
@@luiscarretero3996 I’m pretty sure those were old messages he was getting back once he was able to get reception.
It's hard to say I'm pretty sure the implication is that his family is still alive at the end. Even if there is no confirmation that they're alive there's also no confirmation that they're dead either. Also, I could be wrong but wasn't that woman that was overtaken in the hall just a hallucination? At least that's what I thought when I saw it.
we need more horror with characters that arent too smart, but logical and enemies that have good critical thinking
Well, technically the male main character in this movie (and likely the female) where in the military (Korea has an all males serve conscription system), so that’s probably a good part of it. If you want more, Israel also has an all citizens serve, and militia service for males is compulsory in Switzerland. Those might be some cool places to check out

Pretty sure that’s called empathy

Everyone likes zombie movies
Actually, from my experience being south east asian i can tell you a few things that may have lead to the Eastern Zombie Genre.
Up until recently most people on the far east despised the idea of putting death and/or undeath in media. Death of any kind is heavily censored in media outside of news reports and obituaries cos of the negative stigma surrounding spreading news of death. It has taken YEARS of slow wear and tear on the "traditional" view of death in countries like China and South Korea by the new generation to allow for zombies to be part of their entertainment.
