Dumeril's Boa, The Best Pet Snake?

  • Опубліковано 9 вер 2024
  • Dumeril's boas (Acrantophis dumerili) are some of the most beautifully patterned, reasonably sized, and well-tempered snakes on Earth. That said, they are not that common as pets compared to other boas like the common boa, ball pythons, corn snakes, hognose snakes, or even reticulated pythons, blood pythons, or carpet pythons. Why not? What is the major flaw with this snake? Or is it an overlooked gem? Is the Dumeril's boa a good pet? Is it the best pet snake for you?

    Dumerils are the definition of a lap snake. If you want a snake to curl up on your lap or around your waist for an afternoon watching movies. This is the snake for you! I've got 2. My female is almost 6'5" and male is 6'2" (hoping for big babies soon). Despite their size and formidable strength they are incredibly gentle, laid back and easy to handle. I'm seriously considering one of these for my first snake. Something you didn't mention is unlike common boas, they are ground dwellers so they don't need a lot of vertical space. With the temperature and humidity requirements being easier than with a common boa or ball python. I'd feel more confident about getting that right. I guess there aren't a lot of morphs available, but I think the natural pattern looks great. These almost seem like the boa version of a ball python only they don't go on hunger strikes. Belle appeared to be sleeping through the last half of that video having found just the right mix of cool table and warm arm.

    After some digging around on Google scholar I found Toward a Tree-of-Life for the boas and pythons: Multilocus species-level
    phylogeny with unprecedented taxon sampling by Reynolds et al published in the journal Molecular Phylogenetics & Evolution.
    That paper found the Madagascan boas to be sister to the Calabaria genus and that clade to be sister to the rest of the boas. The support for that is relatively weak, but it lines up well with paleogeography for how they would have had to get to Madagascar.

    • @sampagano205
      @sampagano205 3 роки тому +2

      Interestingly it supports the monophyly of the anacondas which makes it distinct from the 2016 study that would put the anacondas as a group nested within the rainbow boas. However this is probably due to different taxon sampling, since the 2016 study included all of the anaconda species and this one included only two of them.

    • @sampagano205
      @sampagano205 3 роки тому +2

      Also I for the life of me cannot tell if the 2016 paper backed up this finding, or if it finds the sand boas to be closer to the Madagascan boas. Either way though the the Madagascan boas are pretty basal on the boa tree and are most closely related to fossorial African boas.

    These are definitely some of my favorite pet snakes as well. I honestly recommend them to beginners who want a snake that gets to be an impressive size, but isn't going to potentially be dangerous when it's at the full size. What you said about eating is spot on...my 6.5 foot female grabbed my hand and constricted because she thought it was food (100% my fault, as almost all bites are). As long as she's not in a food response, she has no interest in biting. My male is squirmy, but calms down after just a few minutes of handling.

    I have a young Dumeril's, and thought I would mention that as youngsters they can be somewhat picky and/or shy eaters. Mine refused f/t mice and rats, but finally hit on f/t quail. Once I got her started eating regularly, she got more brave and wouldn't be quite so skittish during feeding times. I began to scent f/t weaned rats (yes, baby Dumeril's Boas are quite large) with the quail and she also began taking those without argument.
    These are one of my favorite species, and their generally calm temperament make them a dream to keep!

      @@kurtodell3990 how big is she in so she's still juvenile ? You don't think she can eat Large or Jumbo's I saw some 4-5 ft take them . Also from my take is mediums aren't really big meals for snakes because large king and corn snakes will eat them they just skinny snakes so they can't eat Large rats but will kill it . But there are Large rat snakes and colubirds snakes like black rat , indigos snakes , bullsnakes that grow Large enough to eat jumbos , squirrels , baby duck , baby to young rabbits or even take a guinea pig . And dumerils are larger so I know they can eat rabbits just fine how they will rats . Also large ball pythons and large Brazilian rainbow boas will eat Jumbo's too if giving chance in they are step downs from dumerils , carpets pythons , green tree python . Also from experience once had a ball python less then 4 ft and less then 800 grams on live mediums no hassle .

    My dumeris is the best. My first snake. He bit me once and I made the exact same mistake you did. He let go immediately and he seemed just as surprised as I was. The bite didn't even hurt, went away in 3 days and looked like a cute happy face. He is an amazing animal he doesn't mind coming out and letting kids pet him. I'll love him forever.

    You left out the most endearing thing about them is some of their behavior. They will caudal lure both as babies and adults so you have a snake that will wag its tail. I did notice that they would watch me feed other pythons and boas and assume a ready to strike posture while slowly moving their tail. I think they could be trained to beg for food. According to Bill Love they come from the same habitat as radiated tortoises. This is dry thorn scrub that also has small lemurs, which means many a lemur made the mistake of what kind of worm is that.
    My pair was supposed to be pre-convention imports that would mean they were babies around 1972. I bought them in the late 80's with the female being gravid. She promptly gave birth to still born babies. This brings up another bit of their behavior. I came home a few days after the babies were stillborn to find the female belly up in the cage. One of those ON NO!!! moments. I rushed and opened the cage only to have her look at me with a what's your problem look. It seems there are some major blood vessels in their bellies and to thermoregulate they will go belly up. Don't know if you will ever see this but summertime in non-A/C reptile room in Miami it happened more than once.
    BTW they died of old age in early 2000's.
