I have the sweetest, curious, friendly, people loving and explory ball python. Kahn was my first snake, and I adore him. He loves to climb into my purse and go out with me. Then I got 7 more balls, and then became a failed foster home for our humane society. By that I mean I fostered or worked on taming down all available snakes. I adopted one little boa that had been there almost a year and was extremely defensive, and couldn’t be handled by anyone. Next was the almost 7’ common boa. She had been dumped in a local cemetery, and was caught a couple of days before first snow. It was instant love and my first big snake. When Recent restrictions started, the humane society put all residents into foster care. After a few weeks I adopted another 7’+ common boa, a male, who had been neglected to almost starvation by his owner. You could feel and see every single rib. Lastly, I also failed fostered a Dumeril’s boa. He (?) is big and beautiful, and was my dream animal. He’s about full grown, I’m guessing close to 6’, and heavy! He’s also extremely shy and afraid/ uncomfortable being handled. He tried to avoid or run, never shown defensive behaviour. I haven’t been able to find a video with advice, so I’m hoping you can do a video on how to handle an larger adult snake, esp from a species that is generally very easily handleable, like a Dumeril. What is the best way to gain his trust and be comfortable and relaxed with handling?
Seems like water works with most snakes and Lizards. They forget about been defensive when they are trying to crawl out of the water and you are the only thing there to grab on to.

I like the higher level of curiosity of the Dumeril's Boa. They seem even more aware of things around them than common boas. The lower humidity and temperature requirements (there seems to be some disagreement among keepers as to their ideal range, but most say it's lower). I appreciate that both are ground snakes so don't need a tall enclosure. I could see having one of each on the same feeding schedule. That way if the ball python went 'meh' when offered their rat, you could just feed the boa which would almost certainly go 'om nom nom'. That would also let you decide the level of activity you wanted in the snake you'd be handling at any given time. I really don't consider the enclosure size difference a big deal as long as you are aware that, years down the line, the Dumeril's would need a larger one. Like literally putting aside $5-10 a month into the enclosure upgrade envelope (I actually do save for stuff like this), would give you enough by the time it was needed to get a top quality one and you'd still have the original enclosure for another snake or to pass on to somebody else.

Royal pythons DO climb, its a common misconception that they don't. I highly recommend joining the Facebook group Not Just A Pet Rock (P. regius). They have, amongst many other resources, scientific papers on research that shows royal pythons climbing, and even that up to 70% of their diet is birds. It's great enrichment to give your royal python branches to climb and opportunities for cryptic basking 🙂
I am part of that group. Yes, they CAN climb which is why I showed several shots of them climbing but I have to use mt own experience for these videos and over the years of me having tons of them, I've only seen them climb a handful of times.
@@WickensWickedReptiles interesting! I appreciate your reply. I have seen that males seem to be more likely to climb, hence the 70% bird diet versus 70% rodent diet in females in the wild. I just err on the side of giving them as much enrichment as possible.
My Ball python must have been a boa in another life. She likes to come out the greet the sun--she's been like that since I got her. When I take her out, she's never still, unless she's gravid. She will come out and beg to be picked up. She'll knock over her water bowl when she deems it too empty, and she doesn't want to ever go back to her enclosure. I put her head under her hide and she tries to get out again. I do have other ball pythons are are like decorative rocks, but she isn't. She's also about 5.5 feet. She'll also tell me when she needs to be fed. So quirky. Some of her offspring have similar personalities. There is one pastel son I kept that has a personality close to hers. Comes out to the cool end to be fed, constantly escaping and wants to explore everything. I had to resort to locks and textbooks on his enclosure to stop him. So it might vary.
NAAAh, anacondas boa are the best for beginners in my opinion. Emerald tree boas are also good. As for pythons, nothing could be better than a rock python or a retic. Great for beginners.

My mom said that i have to wait to get a snake when i move out which is like 10 years it makes me SO MAD that SO many people are scared of snakes. AGAIN WHY THE DISLIKE
ball pythons are cool and all- but my red tail is so much easier. Most of my ball pythons are a pain in the ass to get to eat. They will just go 7 months with no food for no reason. Boa? Na shes a fat ass and will eat frozen in stead of live 100% of the time. Most ball pythons i got are cool with frozen and then all of a sudden they go on strike until they get live. This includes hatch-lings etc- All snakes are different- you may have a great ball that never skips food for long periods or doesnt prefer live- but from what ive seen between all my snakes- hognose, red tail, corn, garter- the balls are butt heads that just dont eat for no reason.
I have kept different species of snakes.... and for me personally i found the ball pythons SOOOOOOO boring. You may as well get a plastic snake as a pet. They also stressed me out as they often refused food and starved for months for no reason. I kept 5 other species of snakes and never had any of them refusing food for any worrying amount of time like the ball pythons.. and yes, i did keep them in correct conditions too!

Yay!
Yayyyy
So it might vary.
each is an individual, very cool!
I live my royal pythons and my dumerils
As far as availability and morph options ball pythons win but you cannot beet the face of a dumerils boa.
for sure!
Ball pythons are the leopard geckos of snakes
So awesome?
@@WickensWickedReptiles yes and when you look them in the eyes you're not sure if there's anything back there ya know?
Boa!!!
Got a ball python but i can’t have more than one snake, I kinda wanna trade a boa
NAAAh, anacondas boa are the best for beginners in my opinion. Emerald tree boas are also good. As for pythons, nothing could be better than a rock python or a retic. Great for beginners.
Best beginners ever!
😆😆😆😆
Totally agree, go for the gold, all beginners should have an 18’ retic!
Wickens Wicked Reptiles bye bye house! Money! Who needs ya?
Hi
To be fair, i still think kings and corns are easier.
maybe, I have compared corns to balls before, check it out
@@WickensWickedReptiles i know, nice video :D. I kinda like faster snakes while handled, so i prefer colubrids. That is less puppular option, most ppl like boas and pythons xD.
My mom said that i have to wait to get a snake when i move out which is like 10 years it makes me SO MAD that SO many people are scared of snakes. AGAIN WHY THE DISLIKE
I hope you can get one soon
@@WickensWickedReptiles Thanks dude so do i!
ball pythons are cool and all- but my red tail is so much easier. This includes hatch-lings etc-
All snakes are different- you may have a great ball that never skips food for long periods or doesnt prefer live- but from what ive seen between all my snakes- hognose, red tail, corn, garter- the balls are butt heads that just dont eat for no reason.
some people do like them better for sure
Kinda biased. Boas seem more docile to me. I’ve never been bitten by a boa. I’ve been bitten multiple times from snappy little ball pythons
🤙🏼💯🦑💨
Hey hey
I fail to see how ball pythons are considered "perfect for beginners" with all their issues.
What issues?
I mean, the only issue I can think of is them being picky eaters
Even then you just offer them a meal eat week and they'll more than likely eventually eat it. Its hardly difficult.
Ball pythons aren’t bad, it isn’t rocket appliances
@@WickensWickedReptiles I didn't say they were bad, just not perfect for beginners.
I like big balls.
I bet
Ball pythons can be picky eaters and that is a big con for me
They can be, some are great and others aren’t
Yay I am first
Nice!
Balls DO NOT NEED LIGHT!!!! Do your homework before you make videos.
