Bit of a departure from the norm today as we take a closer look at my new air compressor. I picked up a Chicago Air Compressors Hush 150 from Sydney tools a couple of weeks back, there's not much info out there on them so I figured a run through in The Build Room might be helpful to others out there looking to pick on up.

Hey Cam great vid, the specs on the AC will have a rated duty cycle which is a good indication of quality. Keep up the good work!

That's a nice home-shop compressor! I have a 26 US gallon (just under 100L) upright "silent" compressor that uses a very similar motor/pump, but only one and rated at 1.8hp. The good news is that it clocks in 70dB, the bad is that it takes almost 8 minutes to fill from empty. It's great to not blow out my ears, but doesn't have the capacity to keep up with any high-cfm flow tools. Would be interesting to mount a second motor/pump setup...
Yeah waiting for your compressor to re-fill the tank before you start working again is a pain, plus if your painting there's not the luxury of stopping mid spray otherwise you're losing that wet edge!
Interesting, I find my current Ozito direct drive compressor and my previous direct drive compressor sound louder than my two cylinder belt drive compressor.
The direct drives have a higher pitch sound which I find annoying and sounds louder to my ears where as the belt drive has a lower pitched sound which doesn't seem to penetrative as much.
This is my subjective opinion, I would love to hear what others have found.
Nice review mate. How does the compressor stack up so far with your sand blaster? Running a blaster is my main selection criteria. On paper it should stack up. What model blaster are you running? Thanks.
Can't really talk to sandblaster capability as I can't seem to get a gun running effectively with media where i am - nothing seems to reliably fire media so hard to tell if I'm outrunning the compressor or what. I've tried black ridge, ozito and a hare & forbes basic blasting cabinet. What are you using? All mine are cheap but haven't found anyone suggesting home blasters that are dependable so didn't want to throw more money at it until its more of a known quantity.
@@TheBuildRoomI've only used industrial sized units fed by 3 Phase compressors. The last one was only 15cfM FAD @100 psi with a approx 300L receiver. It was a bit marginal but did the job.
The claimed FAD of the hush 150 is 14.5 cfm at 100psi which I would have thought would enough for 'consumer' blasters and their smaller nozzles.
Begs the question: what is the ACTUAL delivery of the hush 150? Can you get your hands on a flow meter? That would be a very interesting measurement!

No link for compressor? I dont do car painting, but i do use mine for a little bit of everything and i woukd have been interested to know more specifics about this compressor (for home/hobbyist use)

What size generator would it take to run this machine
Rated power is about 3.2kw for all four motors combined - not a small amount - I'm not sure how bad 15amp draw impacts that so I'd say best to ask a generator specialist.

Yeah still holding up well, as a further improvement you can get better cooling on the motors if you take the plastic covers off which helps a lot.
Looks like California Air. I think CA is letting their stuff be rebranded for Harbor Freight. I have had a number of their compressors and been very happy with them.
Yeah so far no issues with mine - its been great and my ears are no longer ringing.
Thanks mate, exactly the review I was looking for - The compressor being using with a spray gun and a DA sander.
Wouldn't recommend it for a DA mate, better with electric for that at home. I only use it for small DA stuff and use the electric whenever I'm doing big work 👍
My blast cabinet likes to run at 100psi. It won't really lift anything significant below this. Probably need to redo all with larger diameter piping.
Thanks for the tip, I ended up swapping to a hopper gun in the cabinet to somewhat somewhat solve that issue but will try some larger pipe too as it's really frustrating to use currently.
@@TheBuildRoom I meant redo my own with larger pipework! I see other people with similar cabinets who get good results at 80psi. My compressor has to run hard to keep up so I think I am doing damage during prolonged blasting. The compressor is nearly thirty years old.
@@213davidhunter yeah there's a size up on hoses (pipe not fittings) than mine, so if yours are smaller it's probably worth looking at!
I recommend a lapel/lavalier mic, besides that good stuff 👍
Yeah I was wearing a Rode lapel mic, unfortunately Rode mics have a gain setting that is easy to accidentally turn up. Base setting is great, next setting up is some clipping and distortion, the top level (+30db) is horrible even after correction. I have no idea why they implemented that feature but its caught me a few times, maybe its good for recording very far away from the mic in an anechoic chamber? 🤷
Great review. Just picked up a Hush70 and it’s is awesome and craps all over my load little 50ltr Ryobi that blows ear drums!

It's a shame you don't have room for larger filters. Switched to Solberg filters on my CA compressor, and it made a world of difference in the noise.
What sort of filters? I'm looking to improve the air filtration on mind because it sits so close to where I work and I don't have a lot of room to move it.
@@TheBuildRoom I used two *Solberg FS-06-050 Filter Silencers.* About $22 each on Amazon. They work great but they're rather large. They might be a pretty tight squeeze in your compressor.
I looked at those as well but couldn’t find these sort of details online so well done for putting that info out there. But due to a space restriction. I’ve ended up with a Repco Mechpro Blue Air Compressor, Belt Drive 3.5HP 320L/min 60L -15amp- $700
It’s been great and done everything I’ve needed. What more can anyone ask.

Looks like a decent unit - I think most people can get away with less than this one. For me though the silent bit is pretty important. Editing the latest video and the air hose clicking as it pulls out is louder than the compressor.
Also yes - definitely a drawback from doing single pack 2k colour, its a lot harder to see on the floor when its clear 🤣🤣

Yeah i was worried about complexity, although based on the fact that the last one failed mid job it is comforting to know if one motor fails i still have three to complete the job. They do sell spare motors too which is a small comfort.
will you be running the compressor in another area or have some sort of filtered enclosure? just curious to how you'll be dealing with contaminants in the workspace air and it going back into the compressor.
Yes, although short term I'll just put it outside when I'm doing really dirty work. Once Doofa is painted the plan is to build an enclosure with paint booth filters and a fan to ensure it doesn't overheat due to lack of airflow.
Take the covers off the pumps for better cooling.

Lol, it runs at the same volume I speak at, so pretty much whatever Db whiney and annoying sits at.

Mate what size outlet does this require in Australia?? 20 amp right ? Because 15.2 - ppint two over
Nah it's a standard 15amp plug and appropriate 15a circuit.
@TheBuildRoom than why does the specifications says 15.2 amp - that would mean need to go up to a 20 amp outlet

This oil-free compressor is not for a airsander that is in constant use like you do on such car: the membranes in the motors will burn with constant use !!!
Yeah only for small sections - electric for the full car
@@TheBuildRoom If one would still use an airsander then buy the one with the biggest tank and the most cilinders on it; that way the compressor doesn't switch on and off that much so the cilinders can cool down for a longer period in between going on and off.
Great review, ever thought of adding an auxiliary tank for more air so the compressor will run less!
Thought about that but extra tank is really only useful if you you use just enough air then stop for an extended period. If the compressor can't keep with the tool then an extra tank just delays the inevitable.
Big tank is good so you don't get pressure drop off tho, 150L on this is more than enough for auto spray gun work.

@josequinones297 you could run 2 of these compressors hooked up together, 8 motors and 300L for about 3k, but at that point I think there would be some better compressors available for that price?
How did you know to put a towel on the wet spot?
