There is no right or wrong. You can't expect to do the same as people who have made thousands of frames. Doesn't mean it's not good. As long as you like the result that's all that matters.
Your work is very beautiful And I love the way that you speckled the outside trim gold to antique it with that small little brush I was impressed by how much are painted held by are you doing the speckling
I have a collection of prints from the early 20 th century and not having found the right frames in quantity I have decided on seeing this, to make them ! Of COURSE they will not be to your high standard but I am willing to give it a shot. I make most other things anyway, sewing, painting, carpentry etc.
Would that be a sharpened wood dowel used to make the drawing into the bole? Also was that a spatter technique used apply either casein or some fluid to the outer edge?
This is for the people wondering about the materials used here:The red paint is called "red bole" prepared with pigment red bole and animal skin glue and applied on the surface then filed to make it perfect even surface . This is a platform for the gold application. Then activate the surface(animal glue in it water based glue) with water then place the gold leaf on the wetted parts.Water evaporates and glue sticks onto gold. Also you can achieve higher degree of shine with red bole base, it allows burnishing as it gives mirror like finish (depends what kind of effect you desire).
We don't use animal skin glue or rabbit skin glue. It's a gelatin glue. To apply the gold a water and alcohol mixture is used. It contains some glue as well but very little.
I looked at your website. I love it. I'm a gilder-restorer, I live in England. I could come work for you and learn how you do it.?.. then I'd come back to England and continue living here... that would be exciting..

A few questions, the part you were scraping off already had gold leaf under it.. and bole on top of it(the pinkish hue colour?) what instrument are you using to scrape away your design with? What is the shiny stuff you put in at the end? Would you recommend a good beginners book? How I wish I could apprentice with this most beautiful art form. Thank you so much for sharing this. I look forward to hearing what you used. Thank you
That's correct, the gold is under the parts that need to be scraped. That is not bole over the gold though. It's casein paint that's scraped off. Gesso and bole are under the gold. At the end butchers wax is applied. It's a clear natural paste wax. We often mix it with other things depending on the finish. There is no book that can help with this type of work. It takes years of practice to develop the skills and techniques you see in the video. The only way to learn is actually doing it.
Is there any chance I could use guoache paint as a substitute for casein.( is casein the same as milk paint?) and what order do you put bole and gesso? Gesso first and then bole.
Wow!!! What a gorgeous frame! At each step I kept thinking, 'Oh no! He's ruining it!' and then it just got better and better. A splendid piece of artwork as valuable as the art it frames. Couple of questions: 1. What is the red paint? Is this clay bole? 2. What is the pencil - wood or paper? 3. What did you use to antique it? It looked like muddy water. 4. Do you sell these products? Thank you for a very lovely video!!!
The red paint is casein but it goes on top of a red clay bole. The pencil is wood. The wash indeed does look like muddy water. For this frame it’s mostly umber casein paint and water. Most of it is taken off with butchers wax. We don’t sell these products.
@@CJFRAMES Very grateful for your knowledge. I am not an artist but do a lot of furniture refinishing/ restoration, and could borrow some of these techniques. Many thanks for a superb demo and your response!
You mentioned you used casein paint. I'm assuming that was the layer over the gold leaf. What was the final wash that gave the final antique look? Thank you so much for sharing this incredible process. Beautiful work- masterful, truly!
Very grateful to see how you add gold leaf. I've only used it a few times. Nice to see the skilled hand and brush flowing on the gold leaf sheet. I did see you using a pencil to draw / paint the design on but read above that, "no gold pencil is used". Can you advise what tool you were using?
Looks like it's a tool for inscribing, maybe a sharpened dowel or something similar. There is a layer of gold leaf, and above that a layer of matte paint that's some kinda terra cotta or caput mortem. They are scratching off the matte paint to reveal the gold under it. Like those scratch-off art projects that were popular in the 90's, but with gold under it.

Anything sharp can be used for the sgraffito. This is a special pencil with no lead. The spatter is used to simulate fly specs and aging.
