Controlling the contact on your short game shots around the green is a vital skill if you want to lower your scores.
However, most amateur golfers find themselves frequently mishitting these seemingly simple shots, leading to topped shots, fat shots, and thinned shots that fly across the green and over the other side.
The key to good contact is managing the radius of the swing arc and how the sole of the club interacts with the ground. This is achieved via good control of the trail arm and the body pivot. The desired radius management can be achieved if you know how to sequence and synchronise the arms and body throughout this shots.
Learn how to do this with my favourite chipping drill that I share in this video - RIGHT ARM ONLY. Be sure to watch my other short game videos to further enhance your skills around the green.

I use the one arm drill you taught me on the last channel you had. I am quite good with the stock chip now when practicing but I still have issues on the course with distance control due to uphill, downhill, etc, my strike is good how do you get better at knowing how far each club goes when chipping?

Practice. I would recommend having a “stock” swing length/speed and noting how far that ball carries/rolls. Then you can make adjustments from there. Uphill lies will launch the ball higher and result in less carry/roll. Downhill will launch lower = more roll out/total distance.

Rob, again, your teaching has been very helpful for my game and thank you for helping us all improver our golf IQ. I have noticed that there appears a very intense debate between the steep versus narrow angle of the club delivery among teaching professionals (Joe May versus Parker McLaclin). What I like about your approach is that you have avoided the complications and nuances that must certainly afflict the tour professionals (Victor Hovland comes to mind and the issues that Tiger Woods had a few years ago). Keep up the good work! Stephen
