This has been a project 8 years in the making, and was the most challenging product I've designed so far. During the designing process my brain went wild with ideas. I packed this carder FULL of helpful features (Including several never seen before on a carder)
I hope you enjoy watching and the carder helps fiber artists enjoy the wonderful craft.
Let me know if you have questions, I am happy to help!

Oh My, young man you are brilliant and blessed! I've been thinking of building my own for years, but yours is a good price and that package is Awesome.
A true business man, I don't even know how to use that thing and I still want it. Tbh it would look nice even just as decoration in a vintage themed house.
I appreciate it!
I currently have three carders, so I can't support you in that way.....but I certainly will be telling people about this (and secretly wishing I could go back in time and get this one) TY. Brilliant!
I appreciate it! Keep an eye out for our patent pending handheld roller brush that can be used on your existing carders. It's in development!

Omg this is incredible
I’m not the target audience but this is cool and deserves engagement
Thank you!
I'm sitting back awed by how simple yet brilliant this is. Outstanding job!
What incredible design! Congrats!❤❤
Thank you!
What a beautiful carder!
This carder sounds like a dream! I need it! I'm dreading cleaning my current carder and I don't feel like it performs that great either. Thank you for designing such an awesome tool!
So glad you are excited about it! When I asked for feedback from spinners years ago when I started working on this project, the feedback was overwhelmingly to make the carder easier to clean. This was also my own experience, so I made that my focus on this carder and got a bit carried away. I'm excited to hear how people enjoy it!
@@bamfiberworks I will definitely let you know. I am on the waiting list for mine 🙂
You solved my problem! I’ve been struggling to pick a drum carder after saving for months to purchase one. Your beautiful carder offers everything i didn’t realize i was looking for! One more paycheck and i’ll be ready to get on the list for what looks like the carder of my dreams!😁
That's exciting! I am sure you will absolutely love it!!
Excited to try it out. Just placed my preorder
That's exciting! We are working hard at getting these out! Do enjoy!
very interesting. cool features, and looks to be very well made. the only thing i wonder about is drum adjustments. it doesn't appear to have a way to adjust the clearance of the drums (?)
The drum clearance can be adjusted in seconds and without tools. To adjust, loosen the knobs on the long levers on each side of the licker in. By raising or lowering the levers you can adjust the clearance quickly and precisely. I am so glad you asked this question, because I hadn't realized I did not mention it in the video!
Will be very interested to read feedback from those using this carder!
Wow this is amazing! I'm unable to afford a second carder as
I'm just starting out my biz and already have one, but I'd love this if i could!!
Thank you! I totally understand that.
Sounds great, although I will be watching out for your attachment to use on my current carder 👍
Absolutely!
Wish I had seen this before I bought my Ashford although I do enjoy my Ashford .
But I am thinking if my classes sell well I will be looking for an electric carder 2026 give you time to sort out a moter . 😊🙏
Looks like an awesome machine, I’m wondering if you can use it in the middle of a table or if the handle needs to be at the edge to turn… it looks like it might be tight to use if not at the edge?
Yes, the carder needs to be used on the edge of your table.
In one of my prototypes leading up to this model I made it convertible with a kickstand to be able to use it in the middle of the table or on the edge, but I swapped that feature out for the auto clean drum.
I may add a kickstand as an add-on in the future. (We'll see!) I loved my kickstand because it didn't require the whole carder to be higher, larger and heavier to add that ability.
Looks like a great carder! I have one with the fine carding cloth but have wanted to add one with the 72 cloth. I want to do more art batts. Does it have longer pins than the fine cloth?
It has a more 'standard' length pin on the cloth, so they're probably the same length your fine cloth if I were to take a guess. However, we have made some awesome art batts on this!
@ Thank you!
I don't know what that is or what is it for but it is awesome!
Thank you!
Got here via PLY's blog and am very, very intrigued by this beautiful carder. I travel all over the eastern half of the US vending and teaching at fiber festivals. My booth includes a custom batt "buffet" and my class offerings include an art-batt workshop, so I spend a lot of time drum-carding! This is a beautiful machine, and I would love to be able to use it in my work. My only concern is that with the shifts in climate my show set-up - including my drum carder - goes through (dry to wet to dry, cold to hot to warm), I'm concerned that the polyurethane band would wear out very quickly. Any thoughts about making this a chain-drive machine instead? Thank you for all the incredible work you've put into this!
Thank you for you comment!
I have considered making a chain driven machine, however I have decided against it for the time being because of the challenges of cleaning a chain driven machine and quickly swapping drums out. (This doesn't mean I won't ever make a chain driven machine in the future though!)
An electric model is the next carder on the list right now.
Because of all the moving wood parts in this carder I would suggest storing this in a climate controlled area most of the time. It would be fine to take along to the Festivals of course, but i would store it inside when not in use.
Of course I also supply replacement parts and belts for the carder as well!
Good plan! I'll be looking for the electric model, but you could also just provide a little flywheel and directions for setup with any small motor.
Could you please give the dimenions of the finished batt or at least the width and diameter of the drum? 😊
Yes! The width of the points on the drum are 8" and the diameter is 6.75" to the base of the points.
Can this have interchangeable drums? I am wondering if I could make a 120 tip drum and put it on this carder.
I am in the process of exploring different drum TPI's for this carder. I am going to do some robust testing before I release an update on that. (I'll likely release a video on my findings)
If I do offer different TPI drums for the carder it will be SO EASY to swap the drums out because of the easy swap system I have on this carder.
How many ounces of fiber fit on the large drum?
I made a batt of Shetland and easily fit 2.3oz. I probably could have fit more, but hopefully that's a good rough estimate.
Do you have to hand card the fleece before putting it into a drum carder or can you go right from a washed fleece and put it in the drum carder?
Great question! How much work the fiber needs before sending it through the carder depends on the quality of the fleece. At minimum, the locks need to be picked (opened 'fluffed') before carding.
If your fleece has second cuts or weak tips, you will need to use the flicker brush to remove those before carding to avoid neps.
I hope this helps!
Thank you for the response.
This looks so amazing! Can you give an estimate on how much fiber the carder can hold in oz? (i know this varies between top and fleece and also by sheep breed, thus why I'm asking for an estimated weight)
Absolutely! I did a batt of Shetland and comfortably fit 2.3oz. I probably could have fit a bit more, but hopefully that's a good rough estimate.
@bamfiberworks yes, that info is super helpful, thanks so much!!!
Beautiful drum carder! But for those of us who have already invested in another carder, I don't suppose you'd consider making a drum cleaner attachment for other manufacturers?
I have a patent pending handheld device for other carders I am working on! I am still early in the development, but so far my testing has been very promising!
I will have a product release video when it's available.
@@bamfiberworks Very good news! I really like my Bam Fiber works hackle and comb, btw.
You forgot to say how much it was ?
Thank you for your question! I may have to raise my price in the future, so I didn't list the price so it wouldn't be inaccurate at a later date. Here is a link to the carder with the current pricing: www.bamfiberworks.com/collections/carders/products/drum-carder
I was given a used carder from someone, and it needs a new belt as it came without one. I cant find any youtube video or a company that sells belts to reply my emails for guidance/help on how to measure to get the right length of belt so that i can order one. Its so frustrating. Do you have a video that would demonstrate that? My carder has a big wheel and three small ones.
Unfortunately, I don't have a video showing that at this time. A good video idea though!
Reach out through my website and I can direct you to some resources that will help you out.
What does the carder weigh? I know there will be a difference between just-the-carder and carder-with-goodies. Thanks for the dimensions, by the way. For spinners with limited space, that footprint looks appealing--big enough to be useful, but not more than that.
The rounded weight of the carder is:
With Everything: 18 pounds.
Without Attachments (With Cleaner Drum): 17.5 pounds.
Without Attachments or Cleaning Drum: 15.5 pounds.
I hope this is helpful!
@@bamfiberworks Very helpful, thanks!
