Tempest is a great game. Thanks for the prototypes. I think I will try out the Amiga version and the DOS version. Tempest 20o0 on the "Jag" is a true legend.
4:30 the start of a nice beat, most 2600 games lacked music but the sfx slowly made a beat. Centipede, missile command, boxing & defender 2 are the readily memorable. I'm sure there were many more but it was '92/93 the last time I used my 2600.
This is an amazing compilation video! I am a proud Atari jaguar owner and this game is awesome on the system! I just got myself a Sega Saturn a couple weeks ago as well as a copy of that version too. But the Atari jaguar is still the best version of this game!
No footage of the warp levels from the Jaguar version is disappointing. Also workrs have been useful to indicate the year of release so that we judge contemporaneous versions against each other. The Amstrad version was very impressive if it came out the same time as the spectrum and (apalling) ST one.
Windows and Playstation (Tempest X3) look fabulous. My preference would be the Playstation. Brilliant to see all these versions of of the arcade legend. They should've re-issued it in the arcade with the techno soundtrack.
In addition to the versions you listed, Tempest was also on the Microsoft Arcade 1.44 floppy disk compilation; that's actually how I first played Tempest, through Windows 95 (ahh, the memories). Now I'm looking forward to checking out TxK on Vita.
Oh man... that 2600 version is definitely in the "why did they bother" bin. The 5200 version looked pretty good. Too bad that never made it to the 8-bit computers. I really like the "zap" effect on the Amstrad.
I have the World' High Schore (in Extreme mode at Twin Galaxies) and the Arcade is the only version I can play at all! Even emulated is poor, that's why I now have multiple machines... and if I'm lucky, ONE of the monitors will work :-)
+cresshead Tempest 2001 was made in the 00s, when those sort of super slick visuals where all the rage, personally I always thought they looked kind of ugly and didn't like that fad. If it was made now I think they would probably have stuck closer to the original visuals.
+Kristina Typhoon 2001. And, as I remember it , it was a fan made remake of Tempest 2000. If you do a search for it you can still find several free downloads of the game. It's only 5mb or so.
Microsoft put out a Windows 3.1 version of Tempest in the early 90's, as part of a collection of early 80's Atari arcade games. I had that one, and I liked it quite a bit, and it also included a bit of history behind the games. Unfortunately, it no longer ran as well after I installed Windows 95.
Still looks most natural fit on Jag. T2k visuals may have been surpassed, but gameplay feel and balance has never been equalled. In fact since T2k all the updates just look too much overload on screen.
As a former Amstrad 464 CPC owner, I'll say that version is the best 8 bit micro version around!! The Amiga version is extremely surprising like it's a prequel to the Jaguar version!!! It's that good and advanced!!! Typhoon 2001 does it SO right and it's a 5mb freeware title that can still hold it's commanding position (obligational download!). But to the most insane version is the mysterious NOUN Tempest 3000!!! That version is outright batsh!t nuts which levels that change, bend and alter themselves!!! Shame it's so hard to find or emulate...Then there the version not on here...Tempest 4000 which is so so but it has it's faults and some of them are pretty serious...So Tempest 3000 to me is the DEFINITIVE version because it's so hard to find....
+Rocky1138 It's one of those low budget knock offs from the time period, and really I feel like the game falls a bit short of Tempest 2000 in a lot of ways, nice music though.
Looks like a remake done well after the Jaguar release, can see they've tried lifting wholesale the graphics and a lot of music from the Jaguar version.
You missed, the BBC micro version, which was probably the best 8 bit one! lol..it took atari all the way to the jag to get a decent game. (wtf happened with the 16bit atari ST version!?)
Now if I just could find the Windows 95 version or even see any footage of it...it's damn rare! (Apparently there was a Win95 version, but I can only find the DOS version) I have heard about Typhoon and it's cool (I have it), but I just wonder how the Win95 version was.
AFAIK, there was no Windows 95 version, only the MS-DOS version and a separate CD with the soundtrack that you can use while you play to hear CD-quality music instead of the lousy FM music. BTW, the music tracks in the Saturn version are exactly in the same order as in the soundtrack CD, so if you happen to have a Saturn version CD, you can use it while you play the MS-DOS version.
Made a download for ya. Sorry about the last one. There was a problem with it. But this one is better. www.mediafire.com/download/bv95ybzpae990ga/Tempest+2000+-++Minds+Eye.mp3
Saturn and Jag are identical which people don't seem to realise.. they are the best game of tempest due to not being OTT but just right with the graphics.. The newer even more intense versions are seizure inducing.
I am actually not that fond of Jeff Minter's various psychedelic embellishments in the later versions; they detract from the stark, high-speed brutality of the basic game. How is the 5200 prototype that slick and fast, and why was it never released as an 8-bit computer game? (Maybe control depended on the analog joysticks?) It looks amazingly good. Most of these suffer from the lack of that wonderful heavy dial encoder on the arcade cabinet. But I had a 1990s Macintosh knockoff called Arashi that used the mouse and played really well.
MetalSonicodraco7342 I think the Jaguar version wasn't impressive. It has the best graphics than the other versions but the SNES version has better controls & the 3DO/Mac version has the most levels & best music.
I'm glad I didn't waste my hard earned money on this game as a kid when I could play the real arcade game during our arcade wars...went to 20 tokens for a dollar. The 2600 was capable of a much better game even before bank switching...and especially after...look at Pac-Man vs. Ms. Pac-Man on the 2600. They could have atleast had 2 crummy webs...at the VERY least.
swordghoti It looks like some game called “female problems” where the robot surgeon has to fight off “unwanted intruders”...I think I saw this as a kid and said pass.....did the guy who programmed ET do that one? Even 5200 is pretty bad...
@@F1JV The 2600 version was just a prototype; it never made it to release as an actual commercial product. It's shown up in various AtGames compilations of Atari 2600 games, but it's clearly not a finished game.
The original Atari vector graphics from 1981 is so classy & original so there is no compare (strange no Vectrex version) but the Atari jaguar version Tempest 2000 is a helluva game & the soundtrack is even better :)
kzbxvz I agree about the vectrex not having one as it would have been ideal for the machine. However there are 2 tempest related games out for it; webwars and bedlam. Hopefully a proper version of it will come out on home brew one day.
Sometimes it isn't possible for me to include the newer next gen releases. I didn't forget it. I couldn't add it. It is noted in the other info section of the video after the list.
It was an attempt at an expanded DVD player/disk specification. The DVD players had a bunch of extra graphics/computing hardware in them that enabled things like better frame-by-frame/reverse playback, on-the-fly zoom/enhance, and running actual programs off of the DVD - e.g. Tempest 3000. It was marketed as a super-DVD-player that also played games, instead of a games console that also played DVDs. However, there weren't enough Nuon-enhanced DVDs made to encourage people to buy (expensive) Nuon players, and not enough people buying Nuon players to encourage movie/game publishers to support the Nuon format. It was also released around the same time as the XBox (original) and PS2 - both of which could play DVDs, had bigger game libraries at launch, and cost less. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuon_(DVD_technology)

YES! YES! YES! Great to see so many Tempest variations in one single video.
Tempest is a great game. Thanks for the prototypes. I think I will try out the Amiga version and the DOS version. Tempest 20o0 on the "Jag" is a true legend.
I played that game in 2008 at a retrocomputing exhibition. Got the highest score.

The Atari Jaguar version, to this day, still ranks as one of the greatest games ever produced on any console.
Why just the Jag version?
Truth. Best playability, tightest tuning, best programming...not a port, but direct to the metal, and properly psychedelic.
This version includes Tempest X3 for playstation. I missed it in the earlier video.
:)
+Gaming History Source What's the best version of tempest?
+The Video Kidd Tempest on Jaguar, Saturn, PS1 and PC are about equally as good, just with some minor differences here and there.
+The Video Kidd I enjoyed the windows version quite a lot !
How on earth do you play
Most remakes: Visual and Audio Enhancement
Nuon: Psychedelic Acid Trip
Well that's the way Minter probably wanted all the x000 versions to be lol
This is an amazing compilation video! I am a proud Atari jaguar owner and this game is awesome on the system! I just got myself a Sega Saturn a couple weeks ago as well as a copy of that version too. But the Atari jaguar is still the best version of this game!
The Atari ST port is shameful but the Amiga version blew my mind.
This list should be updated now that Tempest 4000 is a thing…
Arcade and Jaguar are the best versions, IMHO.
The MSDos one is great if you have the CD version which has the Jaguars music (or maybe even more)
The PC version is definitely better than the Jaguar version.
I like the jaguar too, but can the captions/instructions be turned off?
@@LanIost I liked the sound blaster music like in the video better than the original soundtrack.

I first played Tempest in Atari Jaguar.

The Jaguar is 2nd place with its hidden spinner support and Typhoon 2001with its arcade spinner support is #1 BUT now there is Tempest 4000 !
That Nuon version is what an acid trip looks like kids.
There was also a great Tempest clone for the Amiga called Vektor Storm.

What about the sequel - Tempest Tubes?
Atari Jaguar Tempest 2000 still looks and sounds the best..windows version not too bad but looks too clinical

Despite all the problems with the Atari Jaguar, their updated version of Tempest got a lot of praise from both critics and players alike.
The Amstrad CPC version looks fantastic. I think I have a copy somewhere... I vaguely remember playing it and not understanding what i was doing.
andyukmonkey I was just thinking how good the Amstrad version looked. It's better than the ST version. I want.
It's rare I get to say how good an Amstrad version of a game looks, but this is definitely one of those occasions! Damn good job they did there.
The C64 didn't get a Tempest conversion, but there was a similar game called 'Axis Assassin'.

Looks like it's not possible to get killed in the Atari 5200 version! AMSTRAD did quite a good job!
Why does the version from the Atari Anniversary Edition look so dark?
It was a live capture from a USB video capture device. I actually brightened it up.
What Amiga is the Amiga version for? edit: oh AGA I assume.
huh, I never realized that there were DOS and Saturn versions of Tempest 2000, I always thought it was a Jaguar exclusive game.
Everyone acts like it is when they go throguh Jaguar games so I cans ee why you thought that.

Ovbiously i will stick with the Jaguar version. Shame they did not include 'Tempest Xtreem' though. That is pretty awesome too for an 8 bit.
Tempest 3000 looks cool but it's just too much. Tempest 2000 for the win.
