The PAINFUL Decline of Rick and Morty

- I pulled several muscles while editing this. Anyway, Rick and Morty is still one of Adult Swim's most popular and beloved shows. However, in recent years the quality of the storytelling and jokes has faltered dramatically. Here's how Rick and Morty tragically declined.

Rick and Morty was too good, too fast and was given an unbearable amount of expectations to live up too. It grew self conscious, self serious and self loathing. It now oscillates between pandering to watchers and actively antagonizing them, spiteful over how much appealing to them still matters to it.
It's a gifted kid burnout.
sounds like me but without the first sentence.
Pack it up, this is the best analysis.
@@ArchiverUnknown same buddy, same.
This comment pretty much summed it all up beautifully. Makes the hour long video obsolete.
Arempy58@ Hit the #micdrop You nailed it Goddamn!
The hatred for serialization really upsets me. Because they're the perfect show to be semi serialized. You could have your self-contained adventure of the week that isn't related to any of the other adventures. But have the effects of that adventure continue on to future episodes. And reveal small bits about the characters past in each adventure.
To be honest I actually think this so called hatred for serialization is an actuall part of the story not just a gag that writters keeps telling us so we don't demand serious plot. Rick somehow knows he is in a show.
He did say “he hates backstories” in a literary sense but that turned out to hide a tragic backstory so maybe him not wanting serialization could his detached literary-speak for “I don’t want to develop because I feel I am impossible to develop positively?”
Honestly if there should be a rick and morty rewritten and where I would change is after s2 and if I was the creator I would demand for theme to go full serialization if I knew what would happend and the show dilcene after s2 and just tell theme to suck it up
And in my s3 rewritten the frist thing I would do is to erase Rick's memories of everything up to this point to get rid of meta hummer and make rick forget that he's in the show and would have made the government alot more threatening than in s3 and 4
And reveal his backstory a little bit sooner but not all of it just half of Rick's backstory in rewritten s3 and save the rest for rewritten s4 or s5
Finally someone who appreciates the earlier seasons WITHOUT implying that they are the modern equivalent of Shakespeare
They were great when they came out. It was the wackiness of an adult swim show without getting uncomfortable. It was also exciting to see because I had been a fan of Roiland for a few years.
I think the “you need to be smart to understand Rick and Morty” crap happened in season 3, when Roiland stopped a lot of his involvement anyway, and the writers seemed to lean into that.
@@seanlaffey3633thank you! I always felt Rick and Morty went from * athf * level of nonsense, to obnoxious*im so deep and clever* vibes, way to quick lol. Like past 2017 they are so full of themselves

The problem is that it got flandered, it wasn't just the characters or the comedy EVERYTHING the whole show itself got so flandered it became a shell of its former self.
Really great editing btw.
Get it guys???? Jerry is a terrible father and a piece of shit. Now laugh as everyone makes fun of him. So funny.
@@LunaMinuna I hate what they’ve done with Jerry’s character. He used to be a somewhat dimwitted yet good guy that was insecure about his place in the universe.
He cared for Morty and Summer’s well-being and hated how much Rick tried to manipulate them into joining him on dangerous misadventures. And he used to be one of the few characters in the show that actually stood up to Rick despite his concerns being drowned out by deaf ears.
In the season 2 finale, he was also the one person that managed to get through to Rick which is what caused him to turn himself into the government in order to ensure the safety of Jerry, Beth, Morty, and Summer.
Yet season 3 (like the video pointed out) completely ignores this and reverts everyone back to worse versions of their former selves, only with little to no redeeming qualities.
You mean flanderized. Every show gets there eventually.

Yes. R&M has become so pretentious. After watching Community last year, I feel as though Harmon has tendency to start a show with a great idea and great humor, from a relatable standpoint that breaks through to how the viewer thinks, but then if the show gets successful after a couple seasons he starts believing HE is smarter than the audience and seems to have a disdain for them. I just start getting the feeling watching both shows that the writers think they are better than me and incredibly narcissistic
All the writers are now f3m4le thats why🤷🏽♂️😂😂😂
Harmon needs to just write shorter shows lmfao doesn't seem like he can stick with a show too long without beginning to hate it or the people who watch it

What do you expect from a dude who gives TED talks on "The Harmon Story Circle" where he word for word quotes Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey without a hint of irony?
I would say after season 3 a lot of peoples interest in the show, mine included, declined significantly. It started to become somewhat cringy, it felt like they were trying too hard to be over the top and witty. It just turned into a mess in my opinion.
Come to think of it, wasn't season 4 when they were given a contract for several seasons, likely with stricter deadlines?
Season 3 WAS that, the viewship started declining mid season 3.
@@lemur1129 agreed, season 3 doesn’t compare to the first two save for a few episodes
In season 3 we started to get shit-tier episodes, but it overall the season was saved by some great episodes and probably the best in the series "Ricklantis" by season 4 we got a couple of good and 1 great episode and the rest shit. Each season we got fewer and fewer good quality episodes.
Definitely the case for me. I vividly remember the feeling of binging the whole season and growing increasingly irritated. Vindicators 2 my attention vanished completely. Hate that episode.
I had food poisoning and wanted to watch something funny, I just was left annoyed and kind of depressed.
Once they actually stuck to the whole “nothing matters” joke as a real premise for the show, that’s when it stopped being fun to watch for me.
They literally did the exact opposite. You don’t watch the show. Dan Harmon’s even directly said that the show goes against that.
What the fuck is this take

I just wanna put it out there - Venture Bros. has done almost literally everything Rick and Morty has done and significantly better. It stayed relatively consistently good all throughout the show's run. It never felt too up it's own rectum, it just wanted to tell its story. It's a huge underrated Adult Swim gem that I only found after Rick and Morty's fall.

Stuff like this makes me appreciate Gravity Falls even more. Short and sweet with a compact and engaging story with lovable characters from beginning to end.
Idk. I love gravity falls but sometimes Mabel makes me want to rip my hair out. The show was so short that the writers sacrificed her development for Dippers, because there just wasn’t enough time to let them both grow. I wish it had had three seasons, like Avatar the Last Airbender. Short and sweet but not so short that writers run out of sufficient time for all their characters.
Truth
@Ratafak Plachta
It's the exact opposite though? It's very very clearly written by men. Every girl character is written so meanly and they're all constantly fighting each other. This is far from feminist lmao.
Agreed. A near perfect show.
@@Miriam_J_
I wouldn’t necessarily say that. Though, you did perfectly describe Mabel.
I still enjoy the show, but the pessimism and dark brand of humor for old fast. I’m glad they tried something new in season five with Rick and Morty’s relationship, and I do love the evil morty lore. I think if they continue to do that and find ways to change things up they can keep the show going.
Season 1 was too good and too original for its own good. There was no way to keep delivering with a bar that high.
rick and morty feels like a metaphor for the last few years. finally something good and fun that makes you optimistic about the state and quality of things. makes you happy. then it just gets bad but you try to hold on to it.then it gets worse and you leave it be. and then it just exists, dead and empty, maybe with flickers of the original joy coming out sometimes. it just feels like this is how ive been experiencing the last decade lmao
I liked season 4, but I definitely think the earlier seasons are better.
Season 5 I didn't really like at all.
For me I thought S1 and S2 were great, S3 and S4 were okay but flawed as hell, and S5 was really mid. But yeah this show has declined in the past few years
@@heehee2007 in my opinion if there werent the last 3 episodes of the 5th season the show would have died for sure honestly lol
Season 5 was literally better than season 4. The second half of s4 carried the season as a whole. S5 had more bangers than shitters compared to S4

TL;DR
Let's be honest - This show was designated for a stoned audience. The reason it was so good was that no one in their *clear mind* sought to figure it out. It started as a show to watch while high, not for it's depth or meta-complexity, but for the colorful mind-numbing dream-like experience with some sophisticated poop jokes and an anti-hero character. No one - not even the writers - wanted this show to become serious.
But alas, flat out comedy alone does not make a show great. The scarce moments, the sad and insightful, where you could actually see some depth inside the madness - they were what made this show so profound. But depth meant plot and plot required people to get it, but stoned people were not there to get it, but the show's popularity just exploded like a nuclear bomb and new audiences means more success. But how could they appeal to both stoned and clear-minded people?
I remember how after season 2 there was a HUGE wave of speculations about what's next, due to how the season ended. The expectations were at peak. I think the writers understood that and felt the great pressure. It's like they knew they had to come up with a delivery of the ages, but it was simply impossible(and still is) to satisfy all of the audiences. The only way found a way to kind-of doing it was to... write something so flat and dumb that it appears to be actually deep and then double down on it as if it was just you(yes, you!) who were too dumb to get it?!
In the next few episodes of season 3, they took every messure possible to compile all of the fan-based speculations and theories and conciously contradicted them inside the story, so that ONLY THEY will be ones who bring out the mindblowing twists, ONLY THEY will be the ones to tell the audience where the "actual story" goes. Sure - it was indeed a legendary delivery that no one could predict(I wonder why) - But what it meant was that they had to double down on their own audiences, they had to make everyone look stupid and them look smarter, like they're on another level.
But there was also another huge problem - mindblowing twists only work if the show comes to a conclusion of some sort or takes an extreme turn into a completely new environment, otherwise the show might fall into inconsistency if not carefully constructed and synchronized with the older episodes.
The combination of an inconsistent world and a show that has to double down on its own audiences again and again just to stay alive, shows how dead it is. Yet again, the writers never wanted it to become so serious, so maybe it had to die in order to become good again?
I feel this. I watched it stoned each time and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I can literally feel the writers' stress and tired pressure just by watching season 5.
I hated this show before it was cool. LOL I think it's boring, when I watch the episodes I often ask where's the joke. Rick Turning himself into a kid to hunt Vampires at the school. This is considered boring by usual Rick and Morty standards. Half of him wants to be a kid and half of him wants to be an adult so he fights himself. This is funny because.................I have no idea. I also dislike the dreary tone and how all the characters are angsty all the time. I also think it's just gore=funny.
Nooo i mean stupid fart jokes is about the worst it gets in the first two seasons and violence isn’t even used for laughs more action or shock?. Along with constant jokes being made, meta jokes/pop culture , and then an improvisational tone of roiland made characters which was always my fav part. Like season 5 was straight up trash for the most part but ur criticisms seem hollow
@@turokokokoko9714 I watched like 10 episodes and didn't like a single one I chuckled maybe once. This show just ain't for me.
You're reading my mind with how I've always felt about this show, holy shit. R&M is like that one shitty friend who just HAS to make some gross, cynical joke during a tense or dramatic scene of a movie. Anything that comes close to opening the way to self reflection is barred with nasty, tryhard humour.

The Thing that Rick and Morty is missing is more of Justin Royland. Of course he still making the voices but the visual jokes, and his random scence of humor mix with the more organized and self refferencial work of Dan Harmond was the thing that made the first seasons pure Gold. Now it feels like he Just go to the studio, do the voices and then leaves to keep working on "Solar Opposites" or other projects.
Dan Harmon is a great writer but Rick and Morty Identity came from Justin Royland Randomnes and Dan Harmon ability to take those random ideas and turn them in an entertaining episode.
I’m glad someone mentioned this. Everyone always seems to overlook Roilands contribution to the show and give all the credit to Harmon
49:00 I like that the creators and co-writers always say that man I hate superheroes stuff the marvel cinematic universe and all that nonsense and yet we got shit like The vindicator and goofy reference here and there
Back then, when I had only heard and seen small bits of this show, I thought it was a nihilistic, edgy adult animation, but when I learn that it was pretty deep and pretty good, I was interested in why.
Later on, when random Rick & Morty memes (Obviously the cancerous "Pickle Rick" one especially) spammed the internet, I tried to distance myself from that, cause I noticed that comedy (at least made by the new generation here on the internet) was starting to get ridiculous and nonsensical.
I saw many people talk about "Oh! This message about nihilism and the system is SO deep" and such, thinking it was a good show, but now I see that it's just fallen into what I once thought on surface-level to be: A show that's pushed it's message so hard that not even the show itself can make sense or comprehend what it's doing or what "thing" it's trying to do or even organize itself properly. It's all so random and ridiculous.
I knew the show was going trash around season 4-5 because this series is falling. Also it make sense since the creators don't respect other religious and want Rick to be a "god" knowing bill can destroy him without even trying
Bill? From gravity falls? I think he could kill him 100%

The combination of the music, the perfect timing of the clip of Morty snapping his fingers to the trumpet player matching with the music and j Jonah Jameson laugh all in that short amount of time is epic
The thing that made R and morty a good show imo was the endless possibilities. Anything was possible in the land of Rick and morty. And the funny jokes of course.
There is a universe in Rick and Morty where it has gold comedy writing
The funniest shit to me is the improvised moments in the cable episodes. Those were brilliant. Personal Space and fake doors and stealy...and eyehole man.
Thank you so much for making this video. The editing is so entertaining and I never felt bored while watching. Absolutely everything in this video needed to be said. My best friend and I loved this show and I’m sure I can agree with many people that it was a needed source of joy and humor in our lives. To see it decline from S3 and then plunge downward from a rocky cliff is so heartbreaking and disappointing.
Pickle Rick is the episode that made me start to dislike the series.
The fact that a writer self inserted herself to be the one person to "own" rick.
Is some of the most shameful content I've ever witnessed.
I binged watch Rick and Morty for the first time about 3-4 months. All first 3 seasons I laughed in every episode. Seasons 4 & 5 zero laughs and was actually getting annoyed watching the snow. It was such a surreal change in the show!
The Virgin Rick and Morty vs. The Chad Xavier: Renegade Angel
I either see the show getting better slowly or getting worse next season
Season 5 finale was genuinely good unlike the last two. Maybe it will get better, but in the mean time I ain't holding my breath.
Writers, in my opinion, need to go back and watch Breaking Bad and understand the value of closed and complete stories.
Seasons 1-3 were the real seasons. By season 4 they were slipping. And season 5 only proceeded to go further down the unwanted side of things.
Its always a good day for me when cartoonshi post a new video ( and if cartoonshi sees this just to let you know im not doing this for attention your videos always brightens up my day 🙂 )
I kinda agree with them hating their fans. They were so cringe when pickle Rick came out and the sauce in McDonald’s lmao
so real man, me personally at the back of my mind everytime i watch rick and morty is the thought "you're watching millenial humour." and that thought is heavily influenced by the fucking pickle rick joke and the losers alongside it, it's insufferable. pickle rick is cool until unfunny people took over it
(btw nothing i say in this comment is aggressive, clearing that up because people never get me and i mean that in an autistic way rather than an edgelord teenage way)
Yeah I Dropped Rick and Morty after finishing season 3. Seem I didn't miss out much, except I heard the Planetina episode was good. I found peace by watching *Solar Opposites,* did a better job of writing episodic episodes.
I'm truly disturbed by the amount of incest in this show that I paid no mind until the controversy
14:48 this is just how I saw this but after i saw this backstory i kinda had a feeling that Rick was reliving his backstory in 301 and had a last minute change of heart, probably due to remembering the rick who killed his Beth, and decided to quickly change the ending of the flashback. Now this is just a theory and unless the writers reveal this it's probably not gonna end up being true but that's how I see it now. And this would also explain his turning himself in and why he seemed to go back on why he did it in the first place. He had some kinda adrenaline high after doing it and became egotistical right after. Explaing how he took over the household. However this defintally forest excuse the bad writing. I still love S3 and still overall like S5 even tho it's crazy weak compared to previous seasons. They all have great episodes and not too many bad ones. It just needs to improve and change. It can still be great and I'm hoping it will be
Rick and Morty is over.
I've never seen a series with such bitter contempt for its' fans
I think they are just annoyed by the obnoxious fans which R&M definitely has.
Everybody gangsta til the commentator’s animated persona crosses their arms
And just like that, you have Jay more credit than Hasan did.
First 2 seasons are supreme, 3rd season was still great. But now it’s not even the same show. Such different vibe
It is different now, but I don't think season 6 has been bad at all. Season 5 was legitimately bad. Not just "bad for a good show", but actually bad except for maybe the first episode, which wasn't incredible, but decent. A lot of people think South Park waned and then came back, but I think it's dropped significantly in quality as time has gone on. It's just not Simpsons lumbering abomination level bad. I wanted to turn most of the episodes from season 5 off the first time I watched them, didn't rewatch any of them until season 6 thinking I might have misjudged, went back and wanted to vomit trying to watch them again. Season 6 I've already rewatched a couple of episodes because I legitimately enjoyed them that much.
I think the issues with shows in general is they have a time limit so to speak. Rick and Morty had a very wild style of writing that felt very different when it’s first season dropped. After the years and the constant analyzing you pick up on the writing style. It’s not that the writing has gotten worse so to speak, but writing patterns within the confines of the shows universe become easier to spot. A bat shit situation isn’t surprising when you expect bat shit. At a certain point it’s time to put down the pen and let things come to a close. Which might be coming considering they have started showing a back story which they said they would never do.
Great works are typically shorter, things like Cowboy Bebop and Breaking Bad come to mind in that regard. Thinking about it, South Park my be the only satirical show that is the outlier. However IMO that’s mainly due to how quick they can produce an episode and be in current events. What animated show has completed an episode from creation to air in roughly 6 days besides them? Anyways my point is animation is hard, and they accomplished a lot with the show. I hope they bring closure with a final season and end on a high note. Things can be around too long, look at the Simpsons and Family Guy.
I gotta say, your choice of music in the backgrounds of your videos is fantastic. I always love listening to the music playing as you talk
there's a better universe somewhere were rick and morty got cancelled after 2 seasons, and like 5-7 years down the line after constant fan pressure, we get a one-off movie-length special that resolves the season 2 cliffhanger and wraps up the character development shown over the first 2 seasons instead of reversing it.
I especially hated the finale and Birdperson/Rick's backstory. Unless the rest of Rick's friends can travel through the multiverse, it makes no sense. The birdperson episode also prove that BP doesn't want to travel to different universes.
Season 6 ep 1 is pretty good. It's more into story now, it's not shockingly hilarious like the first few seasons.
I wish I could rewatch the fist 2 seasons of Rick and morty for the first time again.
Between the delays, fucked-up asshole creators and toxic fans, I'm glad I called it quits with this series.

The scene when Morty's freaking out and Rick is just standing there with drool coming out of his mouth to me is still the funniest in the show.
For real. This show had a feeling of a 14 year old boy and his grandpa going on scientific adventures to a godlike all knowing grandpa taking the reins on every “adventure” him and morty have.

I miss the Rick and Morty that were fleshed out in season one. Rick, being smart but not too bright, trying to connect with his grandson, but tripping over himself. It left lots of room for fun scenarios, character development, and actual risk. I hate how the character arcs all just end in "they're a stoic badass" by the end of the episode. Now everyone is "badass and cynical" and there's no charm.
All the characters now have 2 modes, "badass cynic" and "flanderized version of their worst traits from previous seasons were" while the series is trying too hard to be edgy and contrarian
I just been rewatching seasons 1-3, I hated the fan base at the time but the show was just too good, miss those days.
And to be fair, even with all the character arcs in the recent seasons, I feel like if they brought out episodes a little more frequently and with not as long of a break between seasons, the audience wouldn’t hold them accountable for a couple bad episodes, but because we only get like 10 episodes then wait for 2 years, all we can remember is how ass it was 2 years ago and forget about all the great stuff about the show.
Wow the counterculture really has shifted from boasting about how smart the show was to complaining about how much worse it’s is compared to its glory days. Show is fine.
@@CJT49 it really isn't. Half the latest season was episodes that all ended with me thinking to myself "I can skip those whenever I get around to rewatching the series"
Also, pretty sure pointing out that a show's not as good as it used to be isn't "counterculture" or "being contrarian"
It's pretty much the norm for shows to decline, especially as the original creative force either gets burned out, spread themselves thin with other projects, gives too much control to new writers, and/or suffers too much studio interference.
@@InfernosReaper it's not that you are pointing out it's bad, it's the fact the show started getting very mainstream, and we are seeing an influx of these "show fell off" videos, with some extremely nitpicky and unnecessary complaints. Yes the newest season had some of the worst episodes, but they also had some of their best. They might be inconsistent with how good their episodes are. But I guess it's just easier to say the whole season is bad instead of just a few particular episodes. One could point out just as many problems with the earlier seasons, but I guess it's more about complaining for the sake of bias at this point.
Rick and Morty has put out so much terrible merchandise over the years that's all over the place. It's one of the most consumerism obsessed shows I've ever seen.
IM... IM... IM CONSOOOOOOOOOOOMIIIIIINGGGGGG!
And its audende defines itself by the show.
It's goddamn ironic that the more merchandise and product placement-ier the show got the worse the quality became.
Fuck, the merchandise went from "hey, I could wear/own this in my home," to "I wouldn't want this ten feet near my house."
Hell, even the commercials went from "We're a promo commercial," to "DING DING DING HEY LOOK WE'RE PRINGLES AND WE'RE ROBOTS DESIGNED TO SELL CHIPS..." and it just gave me a goddamn migraine after a while.
@@eatatjoes6751 Nah. it is almost natural.
What about the Simpsons? I would also say what about SpongeBob but Stephen Hillenburg thought the merchandising was a bit tedious.
I get the feeling that Dan Harmon's ability to self sabotage is on full display with Rick and Morty and is intentionally, whether consciously or subconsciously, trying to drive the show into the ground because he's either tired of doing it or afraid of the success
Idk man, I feel like Dan 100% would leave if he didn’t like wiring the show anymore. It seems like he just let this all get to his head and is blowing it

@@ziggygunz2447 He's a mix of neurotically insecure and megalomaniac which I think explains some of the tonal inconsistency and the show's relationship to episodic storytelling. The quality inconsistency has a lot to do with Justin being completely checked out and Dan taking less time to hammer out and perfect episodes so they can deliver seasons on time and people can go home at 5.
@@ArchibaldClumpy yeah that sounds about right. Also I can't tell if Justin being forced out and replaced is going to end up being good or bad for the future of the show. It seemed like it had been in a death spiral with occasional opportunities to pull out but now we've got an X-factor to deal with and makes it even harder to predict. Maybe with some luck whoever takes over his voices ends up being a positive force that helps get things back on track but at the moment it's anyone's guess as to what will end up happening moving forward.
@@ziggygunz2447 It's a hard thing to say for sure. If it's true that Justin was checked out then it will just be the matter of a new voice actor, but clearly when he wasn't checked out he contributed some really good moments that didn't fit Dan's more regimented approach. The Nintendo DS interlude in the parasite episode is apparently something he had to fight Dan for 😂.
I’m so baffled by the inconsistency of this show. Like how can the same team write that god awful dragon episode or the sperm shit and then turn around and write the Vat of Acid episode.
I actually thought the Vat of Acid episode is just as bad as those other two. It's a half-written episode with a manipulative emotional scene fooling you into thinking they're developing Morty's character when it's really just leading up to a flat joke about Rick always being right.

I don't think that was the point
I think ricks backstory should’ve never been 100% revealed. I found it more interesting to get breadcrumbs and tidbits in dialogue throughout the seasons. Usually the imagination built from ambiguity is better than the actual answers.
And when it was revealed it should not have been revealed in a 55 second flashback that was a real dumb way of revealing the backstory
And they even threw in a 4th wall joke that insulted their audience immediately after the flashback was over
Wonder if Harmon went back to slamming the sauce... 🤷♂️ looking back on his body of work he has historically afforded his audience plenty of faith in their ability to navigate the story without much/any hand holding or pandering.
We've all got a certain number of stories in us, I suppose...
technically speaking, it's not really 100% revealed. just him losing his wife and daughter and how he reacted to their deaths.
I suppose that’s the risk in dropping a backstory - in the sense that sometimes it’ll ruin a lot of investment and that insatiable feeling of chasing and theorizing many of us get invested in. So once the mystique is gone, unless what you’ve presented can actually stand on its own or have a greater weight or keep the momentum, it’ll feel lesser than by comparison
The old Tell Don't Show adage was definitely better for the show. Letting the Fans come to their own conclusions, But now it's Cannon I Guess
This shows quality is 100% dependent on Harmons mood. This is well documented that whenever he has a political or drug fueled meltdown, he just uses the show to vent. And it creates....well, yeah

I think comparing season 1's Raising Gazorpazorp (sex robot episode) and season 5's horse semen episode is a really good way to see just how far the show has declined and in what ways. The two episodes have fairly similar concepts and "gross-out" factors regarding pubescent boys, and yet the difference in quality is pretty stark.

Genius connection to compare, love it
The biggest issue with season 5 I noticed is how they make almost every episode into some big theatrical plot. If they just kept it simpler and made more organic episodes like the tiny Rick episode fans would appreciate it more.
Sperm or Mutated Turkeys is not a big theatrical plot; its grasping at straws to fill content in an episode; quality be damned.

The entire problem with Rick & Morty is Dan Harmon... what's happened to Rick & Morty is the same thing that happened to literally all the shows Dan Harmon created & more importantly wrote for. He loses interest somewhere around the 3rd season. Period. End of story.
It really is a shame how far the shows gone down the deep end. It’s a show that I loved for its humor and unique ideas but for it to become the antithesis of it is sad
A good part of what made the show fail imo is how many episodes simply devolved into “hey you know this cool thing people like? Well I’m going to spend 30 minutes talking down to you about why I think that thing is utterly stupid trash and how this show is so smart”
It's Daria as the entire show, but way worse...
@King Henry V Daria's cynicism wasn't meant to be aspirational. Everyone around her was a counterpoint to her sarcasm and lack of social skills. In fact, her cynicism was regularly cited as a negative quality. At the same time she was smart, empathetic and grew through the series to appreciate those around her as she matured. In other words, she was a teen, and Jane in particular was the softer edge that made the dynamic, and by extension the show, work. Her hating everything wasn't talking down to people for liking those things because she wasn't seen as "better" for not liking the same. That's why even the "bad" characters like the Fashion Club had their positive points sometimes.
R&M is the opposite of that. There isn't really any growth, because the more the family is exposed to Rick and his world, the more jaded and condescending they become. They adjust to a universe where they are only out for themselves. Summer might be the best example of that mentality. And it is presented as a good thing in a way because that makes them smarter and more capable, with the ability to live on as each new reality falls without consequence to the core family. It is Daria if Daria's cynical assholishness was celebrated. Only ironically, in a way that pointed to the viewer and sneered.
I think the story train episode is the perfect example of this. I've never seen an episode shit on the media pushing hard for their agendas, while also standing on a soapbox disguised as a casual rant about whatever the writers hate. Hell, there isn't even an attempt for smart criticism either. Don't bother making a distinction between bad implementation and bad writing, Just make summer and beth shoot crotch lasers and default the bible as the worst written book ever solely based on the fact that you're atheist. Wasn't the title of "Reddit Mod" something we all wanted to avoid?

The sperm episode killed the show for me quicker than any other episode of any other show. I can usually tolerate shock humor but this one in particular made me feel dirty just for watching it. @@FalseHoodx aren't young teenagers the biggest fans of such topics? Adult shows expand in many different directions since boobs and sperm on the screen aren't embarrassing for a "relatively mature" person.
I guess, for "adults", it's much more shocking to see a show that honestly portrays issues of toxic dynamics of people unable to maintain relationships, substance abuse, awkward sex and dysfunctional families; to see our secrets and failures applied on other characters presented from cruelly direct perspective. It's nothing anyone is proud of and everyone keeps it to themselves.
People know about reproductive organs since young age - everyone learns at different pace but it doesn't take 18 years for teenager to know about bodily fluids. This kind of humour on TV has shocking value to teenagers since they haven't seen anything like that on Bob the Builder. It takes special talent to write such jokes that work and have some substance behind them.
Being disgusted by sperm episode, doesn't mean that a person is too innocent; it's just a preference. Especially, if they sat to watch R&M, not Family Guy. Spermgate is not about creators crossing the line and being too graphic. People are just disappointed in them for loosing touch with the show and see their attempt in primitive absurdity as a failure.

The main problem is that they seem to hate their fans.
First, portraying fans that don't like serialization as Nazis, then mocking fans that like serialization in continuity train.
So, who is the show for? Fans of serialized episodes or fans of non serialized episodes?
I guess it’s for fans who can easily shit on both sides?
Who knows
A big problem with me is that some of the jokes fall flat because the show creators are pretty pedantic and political but not in a funny way. For example, this is their own public opinions btw, they think it's funny how Jerry becomes good at survival because he is homeless, and for them survival in the wilderness is the same as being homeless .... no they weren't joking.
Did someone found the feminist jokes in the horse sperm episode funny ? Because I didn't. I pretty much never saw someone dismissing a women's opinion just because they are women. And it's so dumb when some of the most powerful figures in history have been women.
Then, in the last episode of seaon five, the creators went on a rant in the credits about how the whole episode was a critique of capitalism and how all the system needs to be left behind ( luckily the episode kind of works without the dumb analogy because the analogy fails completely ). The fun thing is, nothing is stopping anyone from leaving capitalism behind. Anyone can found a city through voluntary work and have a public ownership of the means of production. No one does it because it always fails.
@@nicak777alex9 i could do without the political bias. have had enough. everything is woke crap.

I think that letting the smith family get use to ricks crazy life was part of the down fall also. It was great how the family didnt know how to handle alien invasions and they used what they had to defend themselves from ricks madness. Now they're just used to it. It's to the point where they are fully aware of ricks modifications on the house, they know how to operate his ship, and they're not phased whenever an alien enters the house. I personally liked watching the family not know how to use ricks inventions and cause problems for themselves.
At some point, people do adapt to things. The problem is the way the adjustment goes too far into blasé reactions that make everything feel too trivial
I actually like it way more when others figure it out and become knowledgeable alongside the person in the know.
It would not make sense if after 5 seasons the rest of the family did not learn to adjust at all to Rick's behaviour.
