Amazing video as always! thanks for the tips 🤙✌
Cheers pal!!
Great vid as always 👍👍👍
Cheers matey!
Clear guidance brother.
Thank you my friend!
Nice videos buddy, I did a plastering course years ago and I really enjoyed the process, there's a great satisfaction as the wet plaster turns to rock! I don't really do any now but really enjoy your vids and tips, hope life is treating you well and have a great day! Oh yeh, I got some good comments about my work but I started later in life and probably don't have enough physicality to do too much these days but I'd do a small job if it came along but eh, the ceilings! xD
Great video as always …I only discovered your channel a few weeks ago but your videos have given me the confidence and skills to tackle the bathroom walls and ceiling and I’m happy with the results …not billiard table flat but a decent finish …thanks! 👍🏼
Thank you and well done my friend! Sounds like you’ve smashed it - keep it up!
I love this channel
Cheers matey!
Great video mate. It's why I love my domestic work as there's no rush and my aim every job I do is to leave a great finish and progress in my work. I still follow what I learnt in the early stages from your videos and courses and will always be grateful you made them. Keep up the good work
Thank you pal and well done for your work ethic. It’s the best way to be - just focusing on the finish rather than meters. Fair play and thanks again for watching 👍
This is brilliant..
Cheers pal!!!
Found this really helpful
Glad it’s helped mate 👍
Another fab video. I've just done a plastering course and i applied some of your tips when on the practical phases of it, and i can definitely say it works.
Thank you mate. I really appreciate that 👍
How much did the course cost?
Good tips m8 tnx
👍👍
Excelente trabajo felicidades 👏 👍 saludos desde chile 👍 👏 👊👊👊
Perfect tips buddie
Thank you guys 👍👍
Great video as always, I'm a DIY plasterer, been doing it a fair while and competed a few whole house jobs one thing I really struggle with is plaster building up on the back of the trowel, it means when I trowel out from the corner it leaves a build up on the adjoining wall, any tips?
Cheers!
Thank you pal. Good question! When you bring the trowel with the plaster to the corner you have to be quick and whip it straight to the angle. You start with a wide open trowel which will stop the overspill. Then as you start to apply the plaster you close the trowel closer to the wall as you’re applying the gear.
It’s hard to explain but the open trowel at the beginning acts as a barrier which stops the overspill. It’s that’s or you apply the plaster a few inches away from the corner and then come back to fill the inner edge. That works also.
Hope that makes sense pal 👍
I noted you're using the plastic blade on the OX. Yet in another presentation, you seemed to suggest you prefer the metal bladed OX. Therefore, I'm a little confused about which to use.
Else, thank you for a very helpful and informative presentation, it's much appreciated.
Hi mate. Do you not find using coner trowel create concave corners and not dead flat. I've never used a corner trowel that's not(what I call) scooped the edges of a wall
Have you ever plastered external insulation board, I can’t seem to find many videos apart from fitting the boards, it’s a common practice in places like Poland I’ve seen a few houses done here but not that common, but with energy prices going up I think it will be more of a thing, quite interested as to what render to use on the boards
This video will help mate. It’s the same system, same materials. But rather than board you just plaster into the insulation instead. Hope it helps pal 👍

Them speed skims r a god send I reckon
Ha I totally agree. I love them 👌
Hi pal what will make sure plaster is uniform in colour when dry
Hi Blain, I've been applying plaster now for a couple of years DIY and friends and family. Getting my walls flat, looks and feels great until I paint and there's loads of micro pits, why is this hope you can help.
I have just bought a ox speed skim trying it out tomorrow
You’ll love it!!
@@PlasteringForBeginners I did best thing I have bought
Top video Blaine, I've just bought an ox speed skim, which used to great affect, (you made me buy one) but was wondering which side of the blade is best can you use both as one side has grooves and the other is smooth edged ,love to know but I'm probably just being a plank ,keep up the excellent work mate 😀
Good man!! The grooved side is the correct side to use pal. It looks harsh but it actually works really well…it does break in after a while. Hope this helps my friend 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners thanks Blaine 😊
@@PlasteringForBeginners hi I'm not very good at the flattening part I'm going to buy a speed skim to help should I buy the 1200mm or 1800mm I wouldn't get smaller as my problem is makeing the lines I'm a bricky by trade but as in all trades we always need to dip into each trade a bit
What trowel is the one that you do the wet trowel ,is that a nela
Can u do a video on how u go about skimming little spaces above doors etc etc 👍
👍👍
Fantastic as always buddy.
Do you use your speed skim and go over with your trowel immediately after laying on?
I do; lay it on not bothering too much about consistency and immediately run the speed skim over it. Very light pressure with the trowel to take out the marks immediately after that. Let it pull in and repeat for the second coat.
Thanks Marcus mate. Yeah…I trowel immediately after Speedskiming. I just find that I get a better finish 👍
@@PlasteringForBeginners
Interesting. I speedskim after second coat, let it pull in a touch, speedskim again then work it with the trowel. I feel if you use the trowel straight after the first speedskim then it kind of defeats the object of using a long flattening tool. With the trowel only being 14" your more likely to get slight waves if you approach it whilst it's on the wetter side.
@@PlasteringForBeginners thanks Blaine.
My last practice was a disaster. Mixed it way too wet again, so much so it was coming off the hawk straight from being dolloped on. It was basically liquid.
On top of that my mixer ground out a load of plastic bits from the monkey bucket on my second coat so there were bits of hard plastic in it.
I told myself not to have a go as I was knackered after a night shift.
I was almost resigned to having to hire a plasterer and give up. It doesn’t help that my right hand is wrecked from an RSI from work, but I’m seeing a specialist now and might be having steroid injections in it.
But I cannot shake the dark art and wanting to do it. So I’m spending summer getting in my fittest shape ever now (just did 10 miles on the bike), and dropping the final 2 stone, which will mean a total 6 stone loss since we first started chatting! Going to give it to the cooler temps of Autumn before having another try, and if it’s shit again, time to call in the pros!
What a nightmare Marcus!! It sounds like you’ve had a tough run my friend…but don’t give up! It’s better to have a firmer mix rather than a wet one and it’s horrible when plastic gets in the mix.
It’s a killer. Well done in the weight loss though!! That’s amazing. I remember your posts about training with hammer curls for stamina - respect!! You’re killing it my friend.
Keep it up 👍
I tend to not flat second coat and use straight away sponge float the finish is good … what you recommend about this ?
I don’t Sponge anymore but if it works then I can’t see a problem pal 👍
Hi Blaine, can you recommend a decent water brush that doesn't cost the earth?
Ha yeah the Faithful 6” water brush is the one I use. It’s mint and last forever…I think it was £15 though 😩
Any preferences for the brush and not a spayer?
I prefer the brush. I’ve tried both but I’m a bit old school in that sense ha!
what's the name of speed skim?
Probably not the best video to ask this on, but do you ever use a spot board? Just throw the bucket of skim onto it to save you scooping it out, sometimes I use the tub aswell for smaller or tighter jobs, but mostly I like my stand
I’ll be honest, I don’t. I usually mix 2 bags at a time and often work alone which would mean multiple mixes. And it’s the lifting…does my back I’m so I just avoid it to be honest.
My Plastering friend loved it but I never got into it. I just scoop it but I do appreciate it’s slower.
@@PlasteringForBeginners fair enough, agreed it is a killer
I would consider a spot board as a piece of PPE. As a retired RGN, the amount of permanent disability I've seen in former manual handling employees would fill a book. Protect your back or else face a lifetime of crippling pain and permanent disability either before retirement or thereafter.
@@PlasteringForBeginners it’s messier with a spot board and it gets in the way when I’m on stilts, bucket perched on my steps in a corner with the scoop every time, I like a full hawk and well knocked up gear
Hi Blaine, I’m Dan, I’ve been plastering 19 years unfortunately n like to watch your videos, I’ve recently bought a ox speed skim, 1200 but metal instead of plastic, I paid £118 with attachment n pole, used only once, I found it awkward to use, is that coz I’ve bought wrong en? Instead of the plastic? Can u do a video using the metal ST? I feel I’ve wasted my money on crap
I’ve got both steel and plastic for me as Blaine showed the plastic blades better to use straight away but I’ve found the steel blades better after the plasters picked up a bit doesn’t drag it of
Exactly as Steve said. It’s designed for the later stages of Plastering…it’s too flexible for flattening. This video below should help pal. It’s not a waste, you just have to use it at different stages 👍
PLASTERING TOOLS! What To Use And When To Use Them (Plastering For Beginners)
ua-cam.com/video/zznwEZFtDIw/v-deo.html
So would you say it’s not for flattening off ? N more of a finish type ?
Do u by any chance struggle with the refina plastic trowels leaving scratchy marks on the walls ? I got a brand new 1 other day and it was leaving horrible scratches in my lovely polished wet coat
You just have to sand it down before use. They don’t take long to break in but you still have to prime them for Plastering. Quick sand with fine sand paper and you’re good to go 👍
Give it a week and your trowel will be working like a dream!
@@PlasteringForBeginners thanks appreciate that little tip 👍. Great channel tho btw got some good tips from urself Iv been plastering for 10 years but shoulders playing up a bit now so only doing bits here & there
Thanks mate and sorry to hear about the shoulder. Hope it’s not causing too much trouble for you 👍
In this video your saying don't use to much water as it causes tiger marks but yet on your other videos you get the super soaker 2000 out and use a wet sponge and make the wall wetter than my wife gets 😉 make your mind up sir
hell of a light switch above the door that's a new one lol
Haha it’s an en-suite. It’s a downstairs toilet so it’s the extractor fan isolator 👍
Don't become a plasterer...
Your body will pay the price...
Your shoulders/ elbows/ wrists/ neck/ knees/ back /lungs will pay the price...
As mine did.
By the time you're good at it you'll be ready for retirement.
Yep I feel your pain I’m like an old transit Diesel engine takes me half hour to get going in the morning but I’m running I’m ok😕
Then i see so many men that have spent their lives working at a computer and they have all types problems of too, poor posture, back problems, poor endurance, generally weak.
Plastering is hard work, two guages a day is alot of work but on top of that is getting set up in the morning and cleaning up after, its so much work for one man in one day
Sorry to hear that Teckleberry and Steve. I agree, it’s a tough trade and you have to stay on it! I did a video on it and I must admit that it’s not all rainbows and butterflies. Thanks for the comment guys, hope you’re well!
@@PlasteringForBeginners To be honest Blaine we all like a bit of a moan but I’m 57 been on the trowel for 40 odd years but I do actually still enjoy the graft and the banter
Respect for your time served my friend! I bet I could learn I lot from a man like yourself so thanks for watching. I really appreciate it.
All the best my friend!
Help! I'm a has-been!
