Brittney, n’sync, Backstreet Boys, spice girls, Christina Aguilera, and Ricky Martin all came from Orlando and got their start playing local venues that no longer exist. Nick studios at universal was just killing it with all that, keanan and kel, the Amanda show, guts, legends of the hidden temple, double dare, slime time, nick animation studios was right here. Disney was pumping out hits from here, duck tales, gummy bears, goof troop, the entire Disney renaissance was right here, every movie Disney did in the 90s came from Orlando. Universal Orlando even had movie sets that were used constantly. It was extremely busy during that period as every restaurant was filled to the brim with people. Even out in the suburbs it was crazy busy. It’s calmed down since then but it’s still somewhat busy.

This was before the internet was really a big thing for entertainment so all I had in my room for entertainment was my parents old record player, their records and a radio. Looking back it was such a rich decade. The remnants of disco and real emergence of the club scene. Power ballads, techno, hip hop, reggae, international influences, it had it all. The real age of the music video. Great trip down memory lane.

I was born in 1980. The 90s were when I was a teenager. We were spoiled rotten by the music industry. the 90s were the last good decade for music. We had Peak Celine, Peak Whitney, Peak Mariah, and Peak MJ, not to mention the myriad others.

Pop is always top of the charts, it's just that pop now is often hip-hop/hip-pop. I suppose it's partly as anything other than pop tends to appeal to only a section of society. eg: Grunge would typically not be so popular with hip-hop fans & vice versa (though personally I liked both at the time, but more hip-hop)
The 90's had possibly the biggest change in sound out of all the decades. The early years was still predominantly American (alt & glam) rock and pop which was so recognizable from the 80's to something more diverse, obviously influenced by other genres and even cultures as well. House music came around, dance came around, Europop, latin sounds and mostly RnB and rap and then all the boybands not to forget and the bpm went up compared to the early 90s. It weren't just American/UK artists anymore.
Not to mention grunge, which was big. Hip-hop was also at it's peak, with an absurd range of quality rappers/groups who all had a clear difference. Albeit it unfortunately it pushed it more & more towards the 'gangsta' image/lyrics. Techno was popular in the latter years, then there was also the world music-ish Deep forest, Enigma, etc.

I guess even then touring helped promote the music.

90s are pretty unique. The beginning still has that 80s flavour, but then there is kind of big split between US and Europe. rap shows in pop industry, there are still big hmm rock bands, ballads, while europe completely starts to dominate whole world with euro dance so hard that american music industry started to think how to retake that (because the were literally losing money, monopoly). In Europe Viva channel was the NEW thing, that popularized dance, euro dance, techno, trance (and of course big pop bangers). As teenagers in europe we still watched MTV but compared to music Viva aired it felt hmm old / established / older generation (rap, rock). Viva was that first choice of new, trendy music, while MTV lost it, because they ignored the trend and kind of pretend ed that whole world is still Into rap, "rock". Some songs very popular in Europe werent even play at all. I guess it was the only decade where that split between us and europe music industry was big (especially compared to globalisation in next decades). As with the other ones, at the beginning, the previous decade hadn't actually ended yet. * I take that back. Based on this video, the 90s I experienced didn't actually happen. There were about three songs in there that belonged to my 90s.

You are right that the original was better than the cover on not only that song, but all the covers were worse than the originals... I believe that there was at least 4 in that group. So many throw away songs as well, 80's list was WAY better.

It's interesting. I'm an oldie who was born in the mid 60s, okay, and it seemed to me that, after about 1994 in this video, I started enjoying the songs less and less and recognised fewer of them. I was also shocked by how much Mariah Carey seemed to dominate the early to mid nineties.
Another mid 60s baby here. In any other decade which Verdy has covered, there are NO months with crap songs. There were quite a few starting around when you mentioned (May/June '94). Still some bangers, but far too many "meh". Music overall was still pretty decent until 1998, when Cher opened the Autotune floodgates with "Believe". There has been a gradual but relentless downhill slide in talent and quality since then.

I would like to suggest (again) a song for you to react to. "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group. There's a really good live version from 1973, but I suggest you listen to the studio version first, then the live version.

90s are pretty unique. The beginning still has that 80s flavour, but then there is kind of big split between US and Europe. rap shows in pop industry, there are still big hmm rock bands, ballads, while europe completely starts to dominate whole world with euro dance so hard that american music industry started to think how to retake that (because the were literally losing money, monopoly).
In Europe Viva channel was the NEW thing, that popularized dance, euro dance, techno, trance (and of course big pop bangers). As teenagers in europe we still watched MTV but compared to music Viva aired it felt hmm old / established / older generation (rap, rock). Viva was that first choice of new, trendy music, while MTV lost it, because they ignored the trend and kind of pretend ed that whole world is still Into rap, "rock". Some songs very popular in Europe werent even play at all. I guess it was the only decade where that split between us and europe music industry was big (especially compared to globalisation in next decades).

Agreed. This seemed like the top pop 90's songs. If you want to listen to the good 90's music you gotta check out songs from bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.

You are right that the original was better than the cover on not only that song, but all the covers were worse than the originals... I believe that there was at least 4 in that group.

If you(or anyone seeing this comment of course) would like an idea of how people might listen to music in the mid 90s, rather than just the most popular - I made playlists of songs on a few old cassettes I compiled(probably from music videos on tv) as a teenager at the time. I did lean more towards hip-hop and R&B, but not only those.
Some songs are a bit embarrassing now, but most have aged pretty well. There's a few songs not many people would know, as they were NZ releases, and probably others people have forgotten/weren't aware of(if younger)

Although Pentatonix is notoriously hard to react to, many seem to be able to react to the dance songs on the 90s mashup. It's amazing. A great listen.
It's interesting. I'm an oldie who was born in the mid 60s, okay, and it seemed to me that, after about 1994 in this video, I started enjoying the songs less and less and recognised fewer of them. I was also shocked by how much Mariah Carey seemed to dominate the early to mid nineties.
Another mid 60s baby here. In any other decade which Verdy has covered, there are NO months with crap songs. There were quite a few starting around when you mentioned (May/June '94). Still some bangers, but far too many "meh".
Music overall was still pretty decent until 1998, when Cher opened the Autotune floodgates with "Believe".
There has been a gradual but relentless downhill slide in talent and quality since then.
