Diesel engines have a lot of soot particulates build up over time which stains the oil, so yes new oil will turn immediately black, especially if the car has done a few miles
this is arguably the best engine fiat have ever made, what lets them down is the big chunk of metal around the engine, and the 1.2 petrol versions which have a lot of issues with head gaskets and electrical gremlins

This is a very hard to tackle job on the Fiat 1.3 multijet engine because of the strange mounting and difficult access to the EGR valve, however we're looking at ways and products to help do this and hope to put it into a video very soon
I believe it protects the plastic housing and prevents it coming apart in normal use so it might be a good idea to replace it, to start i would ask at your fiat dealer for a price as i suspect it wouldn't cost a great deal to replace
Thanks for that I shall not bother then. I'd've noticed how you've tackled the rusty sump in one of your videos. Do you suggest spraying oil under the whole underbody of the car?
Really appreciated for the efforts taken to show the oil and filter replacement. I got a palio 1.2 ELX, is this the same way i need to do in my car. Suggestions are much much appreciated..:-)
Hi John, i've never owned a car with a rusty sump issue before seems to be a fiat issue, older mk2 puntos are beginning to suffer from bad under body rust issues so to preserve your car a covering of waxoyl or dinitrol would help keep it healthy for years to come
in addition you probably carry a bit more weight in your little van than i do in my punto, still a great little engine, hope the video has helped you save a bit of cash

Hi Rod, the car in the video didn't have an oil service light, however if yours does (like our red punto did) you can download a program called MultiECUScan (google it) which can reset the oil light for you, you'll need a laptop and £5 cable from eBay or Amazon.
There is no rule saying you have to change the air filter, but it’s always worth doing as part of a service and is very cheap to change, I have a video for air filter change as well
It's always best to soak the new filter in oil first, before putting it in the housing. This ensures that oil will be at the main parts of the engine when starting after an oil change. If the oil pump has to pump oil into the filter housing first, before getting to the main parts, then there's a chance the main and small end bearings could be running dry, which over time will make the engine knock. This then would not be a good scenario.
Let’s think about this logically… in order for the oil that you have soaked into the filter to be pushed around the engine, it needs something to push the oil out of the filter, as the oil pump is not an air pump and air in the system will be easily displaced the oil in the filter is reliant on oil pressure, so it’s not going to move that oil that you have soaked the filter in, until the oil pressure is up and moving around the system. Also, if you say the oil pressure takes a second or two, to build up and the car does that once a year for its annual oil change then it is only maybe 10-20 seconds over 10 years that the car is without oil, as there is always oil left on parts from the previous running, it is simply not worth my time or hassle messing about soaking filters in oil, getting oil everywhere and making even more of a mess just for the sake of 10 seconds in 10 years (when I won’t own the car anywhere near as long as that)
Hi John, i have never flushed the oil in my life, there are inherent risks with running what is essentially a very thin oil in your engine, as well as some deposits help keep seals nice a tight and engines running smoothly, I've known engines after a flush to need new oil scrapers and valve stem oil seals because of removing deposits, so unless its a very new car with relatively low mileage I wouldn't risk it, and even if it was a new car personally I still wouldn't bother.
You need to use the correct grade of oil for the engine or you can damage the engine or in the case of the 1.3 multijet, find that the timing chain fails prematurely. No idea about the sump plug on the 90
PuntoHowto it's an Punto Evo 1.3 JTD, november 2011. Last time, the dealer reset the message, but is there no way to do that like: ingnition on, push reset for a minute, ignition off ??

Sealey VS862 claims to do this BUT may not be correct for your car... research it more eg forums and youtube... try and identify a video with the same dash electronics display as yours
To drain the oil you'll need a 12mm hex key this is specific to most fiat's so worth investing in if you plan to keep the car for a longer period. I forget the other sizes needed but if you get a good set of hex keys they will pay for themselves in no time. I could do this oil change on this car in about 10 minutes without having to jack the car up, but only because I had done it so many times I knew exactly where everything is and what was needed in what order.
it depends on your specific model year etc.. I know for my multijet Doblo 2006 it needs the special handheld device to do this. This is approx £140 on-e bay eg Sealey VS8623 BUT it may be different for yours, see if a local dealer can do it for beer tokens!

Hi there, you shouldn't get any warning lights when doing a straight forward oil change. If you have a problem with the service reminder on the multifunction display then this obviously needs to be reset as part of a service however only the very top of the range cars have this feature (the car featured doesn't have a service light) so I didn't include it in the video
samir kerbadj the water pump is on the front left hand side of the engine, if it is leaking it may need removing and resealing or it may actually need replacement, you'll need to look into it to find out what's going on I can't help any more than that I'm afraid

Did you get the seal to seat correctly ? Also needs doing up to the correct tightness, sometimes if the cap of the filter is damaged you have to buy a new cap
Michael Sherwin I am not sure about that vacuum suction pump pipe diameter but have used a Sealey TP6901 9litre but smaller capicity will be fine and it works fine. the suction tube fits easily into the dipstick hole and easily reaches the bottom of the sump. When empty moving the tube up and down you can hear it tapping sump bottom. All I had to do was sit the pump on a solid base approx 4 inches high so pipe would easily reach. for good oil try Total 5W 30 is very good.
Michael Sherwin I have sucked the oil out of mine every time, done. 180,000 miles no chain changes, recommend 5-30w, think even Fiat don't use 5-40w anymore and recommend 5-30w
