How Keytruda Cancer Treatment Works (Update)

  • Опубліковано 14 жов 2018
  • Keytruda (pembrolizumab) is an immunotherapy cancer treatment that stimulates the patient's immune system to help fight certain types of cancers. Because cancer cells can use certain proteins, like the PD-1 protein, to shield themselves from detection, this enables cancer cells to grow and spread. Keytruda blocks these proteins, preventing the cancer from hiding. The treatment is then able to help the immune system do its job: Find the cancer cells and destroy them. In this video, oncologist Dr. Stephen Lemon explains how Keytruda works, including what types of side effects patients may experience.
Keytruda is currently approved for the treatment of malignant Melanoma, as well for other types of cancers, including Non-small Cell Lung Cancer, Head and Neck Squamous Cell Cancer, Hodgkins Lymphoma, Bladder Cancer and other cancers that are positive for MSI.
Keytruda is developed by Merck. It's generic name is pembrolizumab. Stephen Lemon MD is a medical oncologist at the Overlake Hospital Cancer Treatment Center in Bellevue, WA.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How Keytruda (pembrolizumab) Cancer Treatment Works (video transcript)
As more types of immunotherapy treatments are approved to fight cancer, patients want to learn more about specific immunotherapies, such as Keytruda.
Keytruda is an immunotherapy cancer drug treatment that’s showing a lot of promise. While Keytruda is the trade name, it’s generic name is pembrolizumab. And Keytruda is made by Merck.
So how does this treatment work?
Keytruda is an immunotherapy that works with your immune system to help fight certain cancers.
Your immune system is your body’s natural defense against disease to detect and fight infections and diseases, like cancer.
Cancer cells may use certain proteins, like the PD-1 protein, to shield themselves from detection enabling the cancer cells to grow and spread.
Keytruda works by blocking these proteins and prevents the cancer cells from hiding.
Keytruda is then able to help the immune system do its job: find the cancer cells and destroy them.
While Keytruda was first approved to treat malignant melanoma, it can now be used to treat several other types of cancers, including Non Small Cell Lung Cancer, Head and Neck Squamous Cell Cancer, Hodgkins Lymphoma, Bladder Cancer, Stomach, and other cancers positive for MSI.
    How is Keytruda given?
Keytruda is given intravenously. The treatment itself usually takes around thirty minutes and is given every 3 weeks.
The duration of treatment depends on the type of cancer and the patient. Your doctor will decide how many treatments you’ll need.
Keytruda shows many clinical benefits such as knocking the cancer out, extending life and in improving cancer related quality of life.
So what types of side effects can Keytruda cause?
Side effects with Keytruda can be mild, or severe. Some of these side effects result from the body’s immune system attacking normal, healthy organs.
Some less sever, more common side effects may include fatigue, itching, rash, diarrhea, shortness of breath, decreased appetite, constipation and nausea.
More severe Immune-related side effects may include kidney problems, skin reactions, encephalitis, inflammation of the lung, colitis, hepatitis, thyroid issues and diabetes.
This treatment can sometimes cause an infusion reaction. Symptoms of an infusion reaction are chills, wheezing, skin irritations, flushing, rash, low blood pressure, low blood oxygen, and fever.
Women should not take Keytruda if they are pregnant or planning to become pregnant because it may cause fetal harm.
Keytruda helps patients live longer and better while offering hope.
If you’d like to know more about Keytruda, please talk to your doctor to find out if this
treatment is right for your cancer.

I have been on this drug for over a year. Only side affect is extreme fatigue. I am also in a trial that mixes Keytruda with TAVO. They injected my 8 tumors with TAVO, and then electrical shock the tumors. The 8 tumors are now gone, but unfortunately they found two more. So that is what we are working on now. They are not on the surface and can not be shocked as easily.

      Oh my goodness.
So, I have my first dose next week.
I will be the first and only FANCONI ANEMIA patient trying it and they are using me as a guinea pig (in a good way) for others with similar blood disorders who may have cancer.
However, I am radically under weight and losing nutrition because I can't swallow, and I'm already quite fatigued and weak.
My diabetes may pose and issue perhaps too?!
And I already am told they have zero idea how my fanconi issue will react.
BUT without this, basically I have no other options left and would have 6 or 8 months or less.
So...as genuinely scared as I am, I am going in trusting the outcome is good and humble enough to accept if it's not. I know where I'm going if things don't go well with it.
      Cheers!

I have NSCLC and I've been given Pembrolizumab as a first line of defense. I've only received one round so far, but within 1 to 2 weeks after, I'm eating like a horse. And I'm seriously packing the food down. I'm guessing that my immune system is suddenly working overtime and needs more energy. I'll be seeing my oncologist pretty soon, but that's my guess as to why I'm eating like a starved wolf.

@@SupperGems One thing I found out about my appetite was that the tumor was robbing my body of nutrients, but once the drug got to work it was stopping that affect and I guess my body needed to satisfy the crave for nutrients. That eventually settled down. But after the second round of treatment, the tumor went from 35 mm down to 6 mm. There's a smaller tumor in the other lung that has so far gone from 12 mm down to 8 mm. Nevertheless it was tears of joy after the doctor gave me the results. After 5 rounds, they could "not" find the tumor. The smaller one is stubborn but no bigger. I just finished round 6 about 2 weeks ago. The treatments are every 6 weeks. And in about 3 weeks I get another ct scan. I'll be anxious to see the results. I'm just grateful that I can live a better quality of life by not receiving chemotherapy and achieving these results.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, cancer starts when genes (that provide instructions to our cells) mutate and create cancerous cells. These cells create cancer clusters or tumors. Some cancerous cells break off and travel to other parts of the body. What the article curiously leaves out, is that the foods we eat, our environment, and toxic products have the ability to trigger changes in our genes and start the cancer process going. So it stands to reason that eating the right foods and avoiding toxic substances (like cigarettes, etc.) should be able to restore the function of our genes so that they no longer make cancerous cells.
There have been many people who had cancer and changed their diets and lifestyles to eliminate meat, stop smoking, etc., and eliminated the cancer in their bodies. It takes time to reverse, but it has worked many times for many people. Big Pharma and its "anti-cancer" movement call this a "conspiracy theory" because they do not want to start losing customers. So the people that cure themselves of cancer are written off as one-off flukes instead of being acknowledged as having figured out how to defeat cancer. Even the World Health Organization admits that cancer can be cured if treated early and effectively, they just want you to use drugs when you could make simple, dietary changes instead.

Now that I’m off chemo I haven had one.. The doctor took me off chemo. I’m to go on Keytruda with another drug. I had 1A cancer (endometriosis) came back three years later. Three medium nodules. This cancer came back exactly three years later. This is after going through surgery hysterectomy and going to every doctor’s appointment to one of the best hospitals in the state, UCSF. I was really bombed out but began to thank GOD because it could have been worse still 1A cancer that metastasized to the peritoneal. Says this cancer cannot be cured because where it metastasized only manages like you would manage high blood pressure, diabetes. Your still living - with the new medications people are living longer. Cancer isn’t always a death sentence. One thing the doctor would tell you being a cancer patient is to stop or watch the sugars, if your over weight to focus on loosing weight, have a healthy mind. Always forgive. Get a good support system. I’ll give say beleive in God.
