    I've always thought that grandmother willow was Pocahontas' actual grandmother but her spirit just took life in a tree after dying.

      Thanks Maria-Matilda! I guess a lot of people had this same thought, but I never questioned it growing up! Like, it’s a Disney movie, everything takes! 😆

    The real Pocahontas met John Smith again when she was taken by John Rolfe to London to marry him (how willingly she went I'm not sure). She heard about his lies when she was there and when she met him she was pissed off.
    And then Disney wildly changed the story again from the lies on which it was based, which largely made it even more offensive to Pocahontas' tribe.
    She also died tragically young.

      Also weeping willow trees arent even native to america! They were brought from china as an ornamental plant... the only willows that are native just look like large shrubs and dont have a weeping habit.... almost everything in this movie is innacurate

      Thank you Erica! It's beautifully animated, but there are issues with the story (not just historically speaking, either), and I always hate that Disney promotes John Smith as being paired with her when, by THEIR OWN MOVIES, she ended up with John Rolfe. >.< If you're going to do base a movie off of real people, and be totally off the wall inaccurate, at least be consistent with what you throw out there!

    Fascinating! Not only the willow tree’s meaning in Native Americans culture, but willow trees are also known in European mythology to be associated with death and are seen as conduits for the souls of the dead. It’s following the same theme as the willow tree in the Grimm Brother’s rendition of Cinderella in which the willow tree produces her ball gowns and the willow tree found in the Disney Cinderella movie looming over the bench where Cinderella cries before being greeted by a fairy godmother

    So neat to see a Pocahontas theory! Oddly enough, that was exactly what I thought as a kid, that she really is(or was) her grandmother. Speaking of grandparents...
    I recently saw Spirited Away and wondered if you have any theories on Kamaji, the boiler guy. Mostly since he calls Chihiro his granddaughter. And he says it in both English and Japanese versions! Why? He probably doesn't need to do that, but he did! Any thoughts?

    Willow trees main way of reproducing are from cuttings (broken off branches) they EASILY root. If their was mother tree somewhere around, this could have been it’s branch baby. Or like mentioned the Indians could have stuck a willow branch in the ground by Pocahontas’ mother’s grave. Either was, very realistic... kinda

    Can I just say thank you for going over the fact the movie was based on the English legend and not history? I know the movie was highly controversial, but I get so tired of people getting up in arms about the inaccuracies and forgetting that most of what Disney does is interpretations of known stories. Was it smart to do one that's based on real people and ignore any and all help offered to them to keep it from being disrespectful? No. But there's a lot more to be argued about the final product than historical inaccuracies when history wasn't even in the drawing board.
    That said, it's a real shame the movie doesn't come up more often cause even if the story is somewhat bland, the music is absolutely gorgeous. When I was little I liked to put it on sometimes while I did other things just for the soundtrack.
    Nice theory, btw, I rather enjoy when you start bringing in research and mix it with the in-verse facts to make sense of things.

    Natives are animistic meaning they believe all things have a spirit . And they are all connected in a collective consciousness on some transcendentalist kinda thing and they learn how to communicate with everything around them but certain people will have certain “spirit guides “ which will introduce them to other guides . She has her animal guides and trees are seen as a grandmother figure because of its age and wisdom and connection to the earth through its roots etc. like in colors of the winds she mentions the storm and river are her brothers . They teach her and bestie different gifts and teachings each spirit does

  • @bobbaker2061
    @bobbaker2061 5 років тому

    As a person of native American descent I don't agree with this theory. People can have special connections with certain spirits without them being ancestors. Most eastern woodland people believe that after death human spirits move on often following a celestial pathway sometimes represented by the milky way. Most nature spirits were just either helpful or sometimes harmful spirits who were their own entities. You may be right but it is unlikely. Ancestor involvement is more of an Asian thing.
