  • The pieces never quite fit together in "Lisa Frankenstein." You can see the glimmers of potential in this horror movie/dark comedy/rom-com, but the pacing and tone are all off, and there are a lot of problems with the characters in the screenplay from Diablo Cody ("Juno," "Young Adult"). The feature debut from director Zelda Williams stars Kathryn Newton as a misfit teen who accidentally reanimates the corpse of a young man whose grave she'd been visiting (Cole Sprouse). Things get even more complicated when he goes on a bloody vengeance spree again the people who've wronged her. It's a mess, but the 1989 period details and song choices are great. Co-starring Liza Soberano, Carla Gugino and Henry Eikenberry. In theaters now.

    Millennial detachment and nostalgia do not seem to work with people of a certain age.

    • @cactaceous

      Millennial detachment and nostalgia is still watered down Gen X irony and sardonic detachment. When you’ve seen it done before, the copy cat version has no sting unless done well. Mediocrity does not get a pass.

    I thought this was quite enjoyable. They really nailed that late 80s aesthetic. Newton is great.

      When I saw the first trailer with the killer usage of In the Next Life, I was immediately hooked with the 80s vibe and Newton perfectly channeling a young Madonna.
      The movie doesn't live up to the excitement, unfortunately. By the scene where one of the characters has become (understandably) too emotionally wrecked to drive, I became glad of Lisa's domestic status, for living with her should constitute as torture.

    The death of Lisa’s mother is told as if it were a rumor so I didn’t believe it was real until the stepmother confirmed. I am “meh” this movie and kind of wish that everyone was at the same level of over-the-top affectation as Carla Gugino

    • @KnarfStein
      @KnarfStein 7 місяців тому +2

      The killer did the mother a favour by offing her. Taffy is the real MVP for managing to stay peppy for most of the movie. Lisa's father already has half of his lifeforce drained from him.

    I thought the two main female actresses, Kathryn Newton and Liza Soberano were the best parts of the movie. I would’ve left the theater if it wasn’t for them, Liza in particular was great as Taffy.

    I think if anything this looks like a decent first outing for Zelda Williams as a director. The script seems lacking but everything from Williams' end screams with confidence. Hope she's able to get at it again soon.

    • @kiddlorenz7582
      @kiddlorenz7582 7 місяців тому +8

      THIS!!! the movie is literally a camp piece. it’s purposefully to be silly and unhinged, performance wise or even the pacing and camerawork it is suppose to be dry and bad like that’s literally the DNA of the genre. Zelda, Diablo and the actors 100% knew what they’re getting in to and they definitely nailed it!

    Man, I feel so badly. I really loved this movie. I have seen so many movies I disliked lately (e.g. Argyle). But I loved this flick. Loved it. Same with my Fiance. And the thing is ... we saw it on a Thursday night in a mostly sold out theater ... and everyone was laughing the whole way through. I just feel lately like I'm not on the same page as the folks (like Alonso and Christie) who know what they're talkign about. Loathed Night Swim, disliked Poor Things ... but LOVED Holdovers, Ferrari, Zone of Interest (though, "loved" isn't exactly the right descriptor for that flick) and ... this. But yeah ... I thought this was quickly paced, loved the sister not being a "mean girl," loved the soundtrack, and just thought the humor was fun all the way through. Shoot. I really had been under the impression that this one was fun.

      Diablo Cody is very niche. Her movies always feel a little “off” to mainstream audiences. People who are on board with her sensibility will love it. Williams gets it. Don’t worry about critics and just enjoy it.

    OK it's not great, but I definitely liked it better than you guys. I remember the 80s well and was amused by the over the top deco, the big hair, and the slightly sexy goth light outfits. There is no escaping this being compared to Heathers, a movie of which I'm a big fan, but I don't think we will ever get something as bold as Heathers was anytime soon.

  • @DCibener
    @DCibener 7 місяців тому +1

    I’m honestly surprised. I was expecting you two to like this one. I just came from seeing it, and I gotta say, I really enjoyed it. Certainly is Heathers by way of Tim Burton aesthetics. I especially enjoyed the flip flopping of roles that the sisters played-one going from tragic to confident, while the other went the other way. There was no way to not make the Wynona Ryder comparison-this would have absolutely starred her back in the 80s. My only big gripe was the pacing towards the end. Well, to each their own.

    . . . Serious question, why are we still casting people in their late 20s as high schoolers? There can't be a dearth of age appropriate actors who could use the job, right? That and can we move on from the 80s nostalgia. It isn't even nostalgia for the 80s, it's nostalgia for a VERSION of the 80s that appeared in 80s Hollywood movies that itself wasn't even a particularly great representation of what the 80s looked and felt like.

      I’m fine with people in their 20s playing teenagers *as long as they’re believable* Film sets are dangerous and the hours are gruelling. It’s not the healthiest for kids. Hiring adults protects young actors and I appreciate that. Just no more Dear Evan Hansen casting and we’re good.

    I enjoyed this one slightly more than you guys but you absolutely nailed some of the film's fatal flaws. Surprisingly, I came away feeling far more connected to the Liza Soberano character than anyone else in the film, probably because it's the only character Diablo Cody connected to when writing it.

    What a wasted chance! I had such hope seeing the trailers. Can we take back an Oscar? Is the problem that neither Diablo nor Zelda was old enough to experience 1989 (as a teen or beyond) to understand what might work as a period joke? As you say, so much just does not work! You guys both like the soundtrack much better than I. On The Wings of Love is from '82. Why would the 50yo father have had REO Speedwagon piano music?!

    Alonso will often give a movie an extremely low number that does not quite match the description of how he is feeling towards said movie. In this instance, while he absolutely asserts that he did not like this movie and that it doesn't work, I feel like he acknowledged enough good attributes and/or pseudo-agreed enough with Christy's lighter points that I figured we were heading for a 3.5-4 ish from him. Like, 2/10 is HARSH, lol. I see many movies per year (hundreds) and, very few would I give as low as a 2.
