The chicken coop is not cleaned out often, he only gets the manure compost out once a year. And the quails get pine needles as bedding. He uses that in fresh form (some people advise to wait) the blueberries love that. - the Duck quad are slug eating machines, he has a Welsh breed that is very docile. They even love to eat brassica leaves etc - but they are good ducks and meander their way through the garden in seach of slugs. They do not damage the plants.

Ahhhh thank you so much Lady Drone :D I have actually got a UA-cam Channel but need to improve the content on it and make more of a concerted effort to upload content :D I tend to share a lot on instagram but will certainly start posting more content on UA-cam going forward :D
Thank you, Adam for sharing your garden and what you have learned. Your comment about raised beds allowing rain to drain made me realize that I should be planting my garden in a submerged bed. It is hot and dry here and my raised beds drain way too fast. Time to experiment with in ground beds instead. Water is the limiting factor here. I enjoyed the tip about the Welsh ducks, I will add them to my list for future poultry. Blessings.
That’s fantastic and it’s so true how we can reverse ideas to adapt to different climates ☺️. Brilliant please keep in touch on how you get a long with the beds and Welsh Harlequins 😃
I love gardening too! The wool idea is epic! I put my latest rot-free raised bed video up. I've been building these in the garden the whole week. Great weather to enjoy! I wish I could grow those blueberries.
Thank you :) We have plenty of wool to hand in Wales and sadly there isn't much market value to it, so much of it get's burnt which isn't great at all, not for the environment especially when we can make great use of it in our gardens!
Swore this was a Caribbean accent! Imagine my surprise, when I saw the flag of Wales waving on the pole. Beautiful garden, I see the hard work and respect it.
I agree, agriculture is a way of life even if is done in a small scale. My dream, I have memories of my grandfather planting what he could in the backyard.
What a fabulous video! Adam's gardening knowledge is superb and he's such a gentle soul. I can't wait to be able to visit his garden (some time in a post-lockdown world).

I loved the "Quack Pack", we have 3 chickens and are considering ducks. The more I look into it the better an idea it appears. We are also thinking of the Welsh Harlequins as we'd like to support the breed as we too are based in Wales. I will look up Adams Instagram site to develop my gardening and Welsh. What a star, thanks you so much for sharing.
Thank you Emma :) definitely ducks will be a joy to have in the garden they are such characters! Croeso Emma I look forward to following your potential new ducks in the future :)
6:29 my second viewing. So I did not store away the gold nugget about the potatoes the first time. He grows them in 30 l buckets. The variety is blight resistant, is called Saro Mira, grows well in containers, and can be planted outside of the normal times. He just got some that he had planted 14 days before as young potatoes. In fall he removes the top of the plant, but leaves the potatoes in the soil in the container. They come into a shed and they keep well in the soil, he digs them out when he wants them.
Thank you Adam and Huw for the practical advice on growing in a wetter, partially shaded area. A friend of mine is moving up to an area along a northern river in Wisconsin, where the soil is good humus rich silty sand, but the garden area is partially shaded by balsam fir and spruce trees. It's good to know what can be grown there, your garden is incredibly productive and beautiful! I will pass along your words of wisdom.🌱🌍 Coincidentally we have Richards here too! Cliff used to work for my dad as a carpenter when he was a young man, now he owns and operates a resort in Dunbar. A really good soul as well, always willing to help and very cheerful.🌞.
Absolutely beautiful garden, especially when considering what the yard looked like initially. Really refreshing to hear the approach that takes into account the natural echo system, like growing flowers for the bees. Very inspiring.
I didn't know how much I needed this until I saw it. Tears in my eyes. My little (10m x 6m) urban garden is buried under snow , but my seeds are waiting patiently. I also grow edible flowers like borage and nasturium all over for the pollinators.
Thank you :) Such a lovely comment. We have since lost our snow cover but it's still cold and I think that we are in for a very cold February so plenty more on the way. But I can't wait for the growing season to start in earnest. It's amazing how the March sun heats up the ground.

This was such a pleasure to watch! I could listen to him talk about his garden all day! I saved it to my "Best" folder, to watch again in the future. :)
The gentleman is so right "you have to garden within the environment you are in". So many folks like the looks of raised gardens or listen to folks on UA-cam extolling the wonders of raised beds and assume they think they are the best way to garden. They build them in areas where they are not a good idea at all. I'm in a dry area and water is not easy to come by. I watched a neighbour go to great trouble and expense building a lovely raised garden. I didn't say anything because young folks don't like listening to old farts. (Most naturally know better). In less than 3 years she had given up gardening because the garden dried out and died each year by august.
Thank you Bill 😁 yes definitely as you have illustrated you can't just pick a garden up and move it or replicate it so much depends on the soil conditions and microclimate of that garden 😊

And separate form gardening I’ve been learning Welsh for myself because I just think it’s a beautiful and fun language and it’s so so great hearing his thicker accent. @@adamynyrardd Hello Adam, Ciamar a tha thu? Unfortunately I'm a "blow in" to this lovely island from northern Scotland (hence the Gaelic) but we still have the climate and culture in common! Until last year we lived about eighteen miles down the coast from Cape Wrath. About the only things I grew outdoors were cabbages and rhubarb! (gets a wee bit windy up there). Here, we bought a cottage over a hundred years old (I almost feel as auld myself sometimes) and an acre that'd been pasture for cows but laid empty for two decades. It was a mess of bramble, top to bottom, and marsh grass and though it's still very heavy clay we're slowly clearing it using billhooks, loppers and shears. Found out I couldn't dig the soil after trying and putting my back out, so we settled on some raised beds. The brambles keep trying to come back..I noticed if you leave even a tiny piece of root they will..so I just mercilessly run the lawnmower over them. We've seven raised beds and two no dig beds (not sure they'll work well on clay soil but giving them a go) and I'm just trying to decide what to plant where this year..last year the tatties got blight. Sorry! Blethered a fair bit there! Your lovely garden gives me goals, something to aim at. Thanks so much for your interest in our wee patch of Ireland (Co Leitrim) and for sharing your great vids. Thank you Luke :D that's really kind of you
Started getting into homesteading and seeing things like this makes me happy
So glad to hear it!
That's fantastic :) All the best, you will absolutely love it, once a homesteader, always a homesteader!
Love this! What a wonderful space he had created!
ahhh thank you :)
I could watch this man all day! He needs to start a youtube channel.
Right on!!
@@adamynyrardd Can it be composted in a year?
@@TheRainHarvester Yes absolutely :)
So enjoyed listening to him would love to see his progress in his lovely piece of heaven💕
We are planning to work together a lot more so watch this space :)
@@HuwRichards Yes absolutely, can't wait :)
Thank you Anna :D that's such a lovely comment :) I'm planning on creating more content for youtube soon :)
Swore this was a Caribbean accent! Imagine my surprise, when I saw the flag of Wales waving on the pole.
Beautiful garden, I see the hard work and respect it.
Haha now that's not something I have heard before. I sometime wouldn't mind a Caribbean climate here! Thank you very much :)
You should hear the cork accent in Ireland .no difference between them lol
This man is incredible and wonderfully inspiring ! I love that he said that it’s not only his garden but wild life’s garden too 🥰
I agree, agriculture is a way of life even if is done in a small scale. My dream, I have memories of my grandfather planting what he could in the backyard.
That's really great that you have memories of your grandfather planting :) I hope you've had a good growing season so far :)
What a fabulous video! Adam's gardening knowledge is superb and he's such a gentle soul. I can't wait to be able to visit his garden (some time in a post-lockdown world).
So glad you enjoyed this Liz! You MUST visit his garden, an utter inspiration :)
Thank you so much for your lovely comment Liz :D I can't wait to be able to invite you over to see the garden and likewise I would love to visit Byther Farm :) I'm so very looking forward to flicking through the pages of 'Grounded' very soon :D Have a great day!
Pretty cool. Could also listen to him saying the word "garden" over and over in his Welsh accent on a loop forever.
Aaaah 😊 thank you Ian! Never did I realise until we made this video how much love there was for the Welsh accent 🤣
Croeso Emma I look forward to following your potential new ducks in the future :)
wow what a amazing garden
The best thing about gardening and permaculture is that there is always something new learn about how nature works.
I completely agree and thank you :D
You are so right. Gardening is the escape so there's nothing to really escape from
😃😃😃
Liebe Grüße aus Deutschland! Du hast einen wunderschönen Garten - Danke, dass Du ihn mit uns teilst!
Danke :D, es war eine Freude, mit Huw zusammenzuarbeiten, um dieses Video zu filmen
What a wonderful video. Adam has an incredible garden and he is such a inspiration. Thank you for sharing these videos with us Huw.
Thank you :)
HAHA 😁 quack pack 😁 love it ❤
6:29 my second viewing.
Thank you Chuck 😁 that sounds like a fun challenge to garden there! Im sure there’s plent of people in the states with some Welsh heritage 😁
Absolutely beautiful garden, especially when considering what the yard looked like initially. Really refreshing to hear the approach that takes into account the natural echo system, like growing flowers for the bees. Very inspiring.
Thank you Brian 😊👌 Of course it's not just my garden and sadly won't always be mine either but the bees will call it home forever!
His speech cadence is so lovely.
That’s lovely Audrey, thank you, I think it’s the influence of the Welsh language on how I speak English 😊
I like gardening
It's a good thing to like :)
Amazing. So eloquent about his passion. But maybe not surprising for a gardener-linguist! Thanks for taking us on this journey.
Thank you David that's so very kind of you :)
What a beautiful video and what a beautiful person! Thank you for sharing! I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos! Vikki, Spain.
Thank you Vikki 😁🤩
I didn't know how much I needed this until I saw it. Tears in my eyes. My little (10m x 6m) urban garden is buried under snow , but my seeds are waiting patiently. I also grow edible flowers like borage and nasturium all over for the pollinators.
Thank you :) Such a lovely comment. We have since lost our snow cover but it's still cold and I think that we are in for a very cold February so plenty more on the way. But I can't wait for the growing season to start in earnest. It's amazing how the March sun heats up the ground.
I absolutely love this garden, the approach, and the execution. Perhaps the best is the character of Adam himself. Huw, thank you for sharing such lovely gardens and people like this with us, your devoted fans. Adam, thank you for allowing us enjoy this wonderful garden.
Thank you, diolch John 😁 what a lovely and kind thing to say, that brought a smile to my face 😁
I love everything about this video 😍 You are such an Amazing person. Thank you so much for sharing your passion for gardening. There is no need for escaping when you are gardening... I couldn't agree more.
Ahhh Margo thank you for such a lovely positive comment it's made my day :D
Wow! Your garden is super cool. I really love it and you've shown me the garden I've been dreaming for.
Ahhh thank you Rose that's really kind of you :)
Huw, I love this series of other gardeners who are experimenting with the no-dig concept. Thank you for bringing these folks to our attention.
You're most welcome!😊
Thanks soooooo much Huw for sharing this garden & gardener! I actually follow him on Instagram, but it was so fun to see your video and go through this amazing garden! 👩🌾
Thank you :) I am so very grateful to collaborating more with Huw, Huw's a huge inspiration and has given me a fantastic opportunity to share my story :)
This was such a pleasure to watch! I could listen to him talk about his garden all day! I saved it to my "Best" folder, to watch again in the future. :)
Thank you for your lovely comment Angel 😁😊
This is brilliant! Thanks for sharing!!
And separate form gardening I’ve been learning Welsh for myself because I just think it’s a beautiful and fun language and it’s so so great hearing his thicker accent. That’s been the toughest bit, honestly. I can’t picture how the words are supposed to sound and the cadence. His vowel sounds and lilting and emphasis! So helpful. I hope that doesn’t sound weird haha. I don’t know anyone who speaks it, so all I have are strangers on video to listen to haha.
Llongyfarchiadau Chervie :) Braf dy fod yn dysgu'r Gymraeg. Cofia ofyn unrhyw gwestiwn :) It's great that you're learning Welsh, thank you for your kind comments. You are welcome to follow me on instagram where I share daily stories where I am speaking Welsh, maybe that will help you gain more confidence in pronouncing the words :) Pob lwc i ti a diolch am ddysgu Cymraeg :)
Love your video. Same here. Gardening is my escape. With everything going on in the world, I find refuge in my garden. It's my lifeline. I spend ours in my garden.
Exactly that Laura :) Five minutes in the garden instantaneously makes the world a better place :)
Huw thank you for finding paradise spots like this!!!! I thought I am alone... I am happy to watch your channel!!!😀
Thank you Irina I was so happy to welcome Huw to the garden to film this video 😁
I love your garden and passion. I will be starting my garden this summer and look forward to new videos from you.
Thank you Tena 😁 good luck with your exciting new project 😁
The best youtube video I've seen in a long time.
aaaahh thank you Mark😊😁
What a fantastic garden!
He has a lot of sensible advice, knowledgeable chap and an inspiration.
Thank you very much for your kind comment :)
This is what my ideal garden would look like! You've done a terrific job Adam! Was taking mental notes, and screenshots for future reference throughout the entire video. It looked absolutely amazing, and so practical - especially from the sky view! 🌱🥕🍅
Thank you :) that's so very kind. I hope you have so much fiun planning and creating your own garden it's the best bit, my plan must have chopped and changed hundreds of times whilst developing what we have now :P
Huw, what a lovely video. Thank you for posting such a lovely video. Great to watch a video where its literally down to earth.
☺️☺️☺️
His poultry looks great! Healthy and happy!
Thank you :) They are little characters in the garden I must admit.
Gardening is a delightful escape! Beautiful video. Thank you!
Thank you very much :) isn't it just!
Loved this. Finally, putting up a fence and enlarging my garden. Want to use entire backyard. Overwhelmed.
You can do it! Just need to start :)
Thank you Steve, that's fantastic :D Garden overwhelm can be a huge barrier, but from experience, take plenty of photos along your journey, looking back always motivates you moving forward, because no matter how small the change, a change is a step in the right direction.
Thank you very much for this beautiful garden review. All it looks so magical and so natural. It is a joy to see a garden with purpose, well-organized and cared by so much love. Wish you the best and happy gardening.😄❤️
Thank you very much Stanislava :D I love gardening with nature, it's always the best way, it was their garden before it was mine, and it will certainly be their after I'm long gone :)
I am so pleased you posted this Huw, If you remember me I started at Crosshands, I have a huge amount of beds now and putting up my third polytunnel, I have 30 chickens, !0 Welsh Harlequin ducks and Pygmy goats,,, I am only three miles from this gentleman and I didn't know he was there... lol, We seem to be working on the same level but he is vastly more experienced than me. I cant wait to meet him..
Shwmae Tony, what a small world. I am so glad you have Welsh harlequins perhaps we could do an exchange of drakes to improve our blood lines? I currently have 8 surplus drakes, your welcome to have one :P! Whereabouts are you? When lockdown restrictions are lifted perhaps we can visit each other's gardens :) All the best, Adam
@@adamynyrardd Morning Adam, great to hear from you, initially i purchased 7 ducklings, ended up with 5 drakes and 2 ducks... lol, it took a while to redress the situation, currently have 10 Ducks and 2 unrelated Drakes, so hard finding homes for the Drakes though isnt it.
Beautufil garden, gorgeous. And lovely to see someone with such a passion for gardening. Well done to Adam.
PS This young man is especially inspirational to me as we live in Ireland, and have too much rain in common with Wales! If I can make our wee acre half so lovely as his I'd be happy. :)
@@prepperinireland2240 Go raibh maith agat Alice :D cen choi a bhfuil tu? I studies some Irish when I was at the university in Aberystwyth, absolutely love Ireland :) Thank you for your lovely words! We certainly have so much in common, climatic similarities, cultural and linguistic, I could go on :). I would love to hear more about your project, please don't hesitate to get in touch :)
I'm just about to upload a vid from summer/autumn so if you ever get the chance, please feel free to watch and comment (and hae a giggle at what we're daein wrang!) Tapadh Leat gu dearbh!

Our love for garden is so similar. My papa was also my influence on gardening. My garden is no way near what your garden is, but I do have the same passion and love for growing anything. Much admiration here all the way from Hawai’i!!! Aloha🤙🏼🙏🏼👍🏼
