Here are the tools you'll need for the job:
These are the steps for laying turf:
    1. Prepare your area by clearing away all grass, weeds, stones and other debris.
    2. Gather all tools and materials and gather them nearby. Make sure you keep your turf wet while it's sitting out, especially if it's hot weather!
    3. Rotovate your area thoroughly to turn over all the soil.
    4. Finish off with the rake again to remove any loose material dug up by the rotovator. If there are persistent weeds or roots, use weed killer to get rid of these, but be prepared to wait for it to do its work (different weed killers work differently).
    5. You're now ready for a layer of topsoil to remove any low spots.
    6. Using the back of the rake, move the topsoil around getting it as flat as possible.
    7. Then using a scaffolding board (or any large flat, weighted timber) start to compact the area by placing the board and standing on the board (the more feet the better). You'll need to repeat this process throughout each section of the area your turfing.
    8. You're now ready to lay your turf.
    9. You always alternate between a full-length turf and a half-length turf, giving a similar pattern to brickwork.
    10. To cut your turf in half, simply measure it out and cut with a sharp knife.
    11. When laying the turf, make sure they're pushed against each other with a slight overlap.
    12. Knead the edges together to ensure the turfs knit together well.
    13. Run your board over your turfs once laid and kneaded to ensure there are no air pockets.
    14. Water your turfs throughout the day, if laying in hot weather water lightly as the water can cook the grass and damage it.
    15. Stay off the turf for 2 weeks to allow it to bed into the soil.
    16. Thoroughly water your turf early in the morning and in the evening, this is particularly important in hot weather.
