I feel compelled to say this whenever the topic of snakes comes up, because people tend not to understand snakes, rattlesnakes in particular:
Snakes are not aggressive, and humans are not their prey. Snakes don't want to bite you. Snakes know that in a fight, a noodle with some teeth isn't going to win against an ape. Even with venomous snakes, the snake will lose the fight, even if their opponent loses as well sometime later. Rattlesnakes, in particular, can take a full week to replenish their venom supply. If they use their venom on you, they can't eat. This is why they have the rattle. The whole point of the rattle is that they DON'T want to bite you. It's a big signal to say, "Hey! I'm here! Let's not have any surprises! You go your way, and I'll go mine!" The vast majority of rattlesnake bites in the US are on the face and hands of drunk men, which should tell you who's usually at fault. However, some rattlesnake ranges are getting more dangerous for people. People kill the rattlesnakes they see--the ones that rattle--putting evolutionary pressure on rattlesnakes to make future generations STOP rattling. This leads to more surprise encounters, which can happen to anyone.
Furthermore, snakes are an incredibly important part of the ecosystem, and wildly beneficial to humans. While they don't want to bite YOU, they love to eat things that cause humans a lot of problems: rats, mice, prairie dogs, and other rodents. In areas where snakes are overhunted, there is often a population boom of rodents. For historical parallels, think about that time China tried to kill all the sparrows, this led to an insect population boom, which decimated their crops and caused a great famine.
I know leaving snakes alone can be challenging with pets. I love that you're teaching Smudo avoidance, instead of teaching them how to attack snakes like some people I know do.

Thank you! It did make me sad to hear about the neighbor killing the snake, rather than teaching snake avoidance to his kids and pets.
I’ve also had experience with non-rattling rattlesnakes, both in Joshua Tree National park. One was hanging out next to a big boulder that I was stepping over and the other was in the middle of a not as popular hiking trail. I can imagine that a popular park like Joshua Tree has a very strong pressure against rattling as visitors can be a lot more… trigger happy than informed.

@@corvidsam That was a knee-jerk reaction to shock of finding the snake which caused the "Fight or flight" response to kick in, and since they were aware there are others on the property, Fight was chose to protect the whole group.
This is a commen response in many animals, not just humans. While it is sad, this response is an automatic thing and supressing it takes either training or a very cool and collected mind to not trigger this response when your body is about to. Just being informed doesnt necessariliy help either
Personally I would want ot be trained in how I can safely relocate the snake in a manner that doesn'tshow hostility and isn't uncomfortable for the snake, if a snake is on my property I still need that snake to be gone. Though luckily I live in a country where snakes aren't natively found.. atleast, I don't think so, not anymore. I haven't seen one at least.

This is amazing! I’m nerding this out as a behavior analyst. Here’s what I got so far as an intervention plan for Smudo.
Intervention Plan: Teaching a Dog to Avoid Rattlesnake Sounds
    Objective:
The dog will learn to avoid the sound of a rattlesnake by associating it with an aversive stimulus.
    Antecedent Strategies:
    1. Environmental Modification:
    • Introduce a simulated rattlesnake sound in a controlled environment.
    • Create a scenario that mimics a real-life situation where the dog might encounter a rattlesnake.
    2. Prompting:
    • Utilize a contraption to prompt the dog to approach the rattlesnake sound. This ensures that the dog is exposed to the stimulus in a controlled manner.
    Behavioral Strategies:
    1. Differential Reinforcement:
    • When the dog reaches the rattlesnake sound, immediately switch the sound to a fire bell, which acts as a secondary aversive stimulus.
    • This strategy aims to reinforce the dog’s avoidance behavior by creating an unpleasant association with the rattlesnake sound.
    2. Conditioning:
    • Through repeated exposure and pairing of the rattlesnake sound with the aversive fire bell, the dog will learn to associate the rattlesnake sound with a negative outcome, promoting avoidance.
    Data Collection:
    • Track the dog’s response latency to the rattlesnake sound before and after intervention.
    • Monitor the number of trials required for the dog to consistently avoid the rattlesnake sound.
    Review and Adjustment:
    • Assess the effectiveness of the intervention weekly.
    • Modify the intensity or type of secondary aversive stimulus if the desired avoidance behavior is not observed within a set number of trials.
    Goal:
Achieve consistent avoidance of the rattlesnake sound, indicating that the dog has learned to associate it with an aversive outcome.

Agree with the comment above. One aspect that is missing is the scent. Rattlesnakes don’t always rattle. Here in Texas, we train for rattlesnakes, copperheads and cottonmouths. Three snakes, three very different scents. Love the build but, for Smudo’s sake, take him to a pro.

They teach the dog to recall when smelling or seeing a snake. This works for all snakes and not just rattlesnakes for places that have dangerous snakes that dont rattle!

Yes, I second that. My dog learned so much faster when being rewarded. The startling here might be not strong enough against the reward of going after it or hunting something. I made many experiences that redirectng behaviour is by far better and more reliant in its results than trying to teach avoidance.
Another training tool that might help here is Look At That by Leslie McDevitt which also works well with smells.

    • @emertonom
      @emertonom 4 місяці тому +2

I think she just didn't show this aspect? That kind of vibration motor is, as she said, just a DC motor with an offset weight, and DC motor speed can be controlled just by adjusting the input voltage. And she wired it up with a buck converter before the motor, and those usually have a potentiometer you can turn to adjust the output voltage. So I think she did this adjusting off camera. I was a little disappointed by how much the motor noise was still audible--it might be that the resonant frequency of the rattle is too low for the motor to run consistently at that voltage, in which case the optimal solution might involve a different drive system (maybe an electromagnet and a hall sensor-based timing circuit), but since this approach was so much less effort it probably made sense for a first approximation.

    • @blackcastlerobotics
      @blackcastlerobotics 4 місяці тому +1

@@emertonom maybe youre right, but the adjustment that has been showed is just the positioning of the motor on the axis. I considered that it has used the standard voltage written to the dc motor.

Teaching Smudo to respect mountain creatures' homes is one of the best things you can do to ease him into his new environment. Rattlesnakes are not "mäuschen" and may be perceived by dogs as playthings (hunt-things?). (Friends of mine have seen people carrying their dogs out of the mountains to get them to a vet.)
This is a brilliant -- and beautiful -- device to minimize the chances of that every happening! Smudo is very lucky to have a human like you!
Side note: Even though LA is hot and dry in the summer (like a desert), please do your part by referring to it as a "Mediterranean" ecosystem, which is characterized by hot, dry summers and moderate, wet winters. There are indeed deserts not far from here but LA is not one.

The vibration motor worked really well! This was such an interesting project, and I think it'll be a good first step for teaching Smudo. I'm wondering if you might try a second phase once he picks up that rattle = bad sound. You could have a rubber snake and hide the rattler nearby (without the bell) and put something highly tempting to Smudo nearby (a toy or food) and make sure he still avoids it. Then you can give positive reinforcement for the avoidance behavior.

What a clever little invention. The use of adversive conditioning
to train your dog is spot on.Coming to a new environment with no clues or peers to learn from could be disastrous.and here I thought a little plastic man in lederhosen was going to pop out of the box and say "Es verböten !. [And then "It's forbidden" in English ]for your bi- lingual dog. I like the use of the rattle from the 8 or 9 year old snake ( you moved to fast couldn't count all the rattle sections) that you had to resolve issues with. With the wildfire, droughts and natural choices they have to make, I guess you may see more ?
Great job young one ,'really way cool !

Nice Job Laura! I'm a German living in near Portland and am so glad we don't have Rattlesnakes in this area. I'm not a fan of any kind of snakes. Anyway, your brilliant device is a nice entry to doing "small" projects again and hopefully Smudo will benefit from it! Cheers, Peter!

Peacocks are a good, yard animal to have for snakes. They are also more afraid of you! Don’t kill, they also remove many pesky creatures you also don’t want around. Interesting device.

Fantastic idea! I was worried about Smudo because of how he likes to explore. I wonder if you can get a few rubber snakes and make training devices with those, too.

It's a pretty cool looking gadget, I like it! You should try hiding it under a bush or shrub, so he doesn't learn it's the box he should be afraid of, but the sound.

Altoids tins make such great project boxes. I had a portable headphones splitter and amplifier built in one of those.
