Marc pleaaase do a video on There Is Nothing Left to Lose! It’s such an important part of Dave’s story of moving on from the darkness and finally forming the band he can rely on.
weird how "we chose this for a stupid reason" ends up working so many times. The color and shape can work great for thinking about concepts and emotions and things like that, and not in any stretch of a way either. "The color and shape of our relationship" is what I thought it always meant, as that works, imo, best for the album and its strongest songs. But hey, Radiohead accidently made a concept album (Ok Comp), so a deep album title can also be an accident.
I met William and had a chat with him outside sdre’s tour bus in 98. I was 18-19 and was drumming for a band that took a lot of inspiration from jawbox, sdre, braid, etc… we(my band)drove 3 hours in the guitar players moms conversion van we used for out of town stuff. We were close. I was unceremoniously let go and replaced. That bands first record, all the songs I wrote with these guys, my drum parts are played with this new drummer. It’s hard to listen to for me, some bastardized version of the songs I helped write. I’m playing a show with my new band a few years later and the bass player(whom I had been friends with since middle school) of the old band gave me the raw recording of their new record. It was great. On the first album the new drummer was constrained and the second was part of the songwriting and honestly fit much better. So, I’m playing in this band and we have a set list that we run through to start a practice. Then we take 30 to be friends or discuss new song ideas or socialize with the other bands in our practice space, there were 6 practice spaces and two of them eventually got taken over by a startup recording studio which we everyone else in the space recorded with even though they charged them and said would do it for free for us…. In hindsight we should have done it, but I digress. Anyway, I’m in this band started by me and the guitarist and we have strong jazz roots but his favorite guitar player is from Nile and my favorite drummer is from smashing pumpkins…how do you make this work… well it’s easy… you bring in the drummers best friend, his brother, and also a Metallica sycophant. It really boggles my mind that band, not my most successful but the best musically imo, came from a band I was in, in high school, with me playing drums, my brother playing bass, and our rhythm guitarist finding the confidence to play the music he wanted to play… this is super complicated. We’re playing one persons music, there’s 4 people in the band. We all want different things, me personally, I just want to play music I like(quicksand hum helmet) and I’ve never played drums in a band like that so I just start writing songs like that and my brother, an accomplished guitarist, joins me in hashing out some ideas. Then our guitar player joins on bass.. drummer writes guitar, bass player embellishes on guitar, guitar player(who started as bass player) comes into fill out the soundscape. Simple songs that harken back to my roots. We got a drummer from another band that just happened to be the technically proficient we’d ever known, 20 years later now and still. I, being a drummer playing music I wanted to play drums to, had to write out the drums for the drummer to fit my songs the way I wanted. When I recorded my album for that band, I played guitar and drums. Point being I understand Williams frustration but I also understand Dave’s. Sometimes things are right and everyone gels and sometimes it doesn’t and you have to cut what doesn’t…
This was good. But I’m surprised there was no mention of Louise Post or Nate basically quitting to go back to Sunny Day Real Estate during TCATS. Granted this video essay would have then probably dwarfed to a mini documentary. But still, those are two fairly big things to omit (especially if the idea of the essay was to explain how difficult things were during TCATS recording/era)
@bluetrane478 You mentioned a good point. Also, I have a question about the girl who inspired Everlong. Is it true that the girl Dave has never talked about is Louise Post from the band Veruca Salt? I asked before but apparently it's just a rumor.
Not a rumor. She’s actually also on the song, buried deep in the mix. Supposedly part of the reason Dave got divorced was because Dave cheated on Jessica Youngblood with Louise Supposedly Louise was also going to be in the everlong video but she got cold feet
Great video Marcbutevil In all bands there is a song that stands out from the rest of their compositions. To be honest, it's not because they are exactly the 'best' songs. I think it is a subjective and debatable matter, but these songs have something; which makes them the band's hallmark. In the case of Foo Fighters, I could safely say that “Everlong” includes those characteristics.
Also to note Nate Mendel almost quit the band just after Pat Smear announced his departure. In part; Nate felt bad about William getting fired and wanted to reform Sunny Day Real Estate. Nate even told Dave he was going to quit. Luckily, Nate slept on the idea and decided to ultimately stay with the band. (This story is mentioned in the Back and Fourth doc on the Foo’s.)
I love this video dude! I love the insane amount of detail that goes into videos like this. I have a request if it’s okay, I think it suits this channel really well. I was wondering if you could dive into the music that came after Nirvana (a.k.a Post Grunge) there’s so many good bands from the 2000s, like Nickelback, Creed, and Three Days Grace that take a lot of inspiration from those grunge bands of the 90s. I’d love to hear about something like that.
Subscribed! Love your videos! No comment on Louise Post (Veruca Salt) romance and her background vocals on Everlong? I have heard the song is about her. Am I crazy?
Gote for Vrohl. Was never a big fan of the Foo Fighters, just not my cup of auditory tea. I have nothing but the utmost respect for and admiration for Dave Grohl though. That man is a walking, talking, singing, drumming, rocking testament to the power of the human spirit. I hear he is super nice too.
I always wandered what Frank and Kim's deal was. The dissonance between Francis' vocals and Deal's greogorian chant bass beat was harmonic duality at its finest. I used to think Frank the Black Catholic was the music theorists who understood Riemann and Pythagoras mathematics were musical in nature, too!
Gonna be honest: I don’t care if he cheated on his wife. Hes a flawed person like every other musician. He didn’t kill anyone, rape anyone, and isn’t a pedo sooo Ykw I still support him
In Nirvana it was apparent that Dave was, indeed, "da man" behind the kit. Top ten if not in medal position. If Phil Collins or Don Henley would have made it "awesome", he woulda sang lead from back there. It just isn't feasible to exteact the amount of coolness a lead singer needs to have.

“William drumming”
Gill : “Not quite my tempo”
Awesome video dude! I love your style. Good luck for the future
lets go we doing foo's discography!!!
The best Foo Fighters album easily IMO
First album is the best
it's stories like these that make me not shoot myself
hey! very enjoyable video. do you know what performance it is at 11:29? thanks!
Subscribed! Love your videos! No comment on Louise Post (Veruca Salt) romance and her background vocals on Everlong? I have heard the song is about her. Am I crazy?
Dawg, never seen any if your videos but i live your personality. Fuck yeah. New content creator to binge
I love the topography videos in the background
“So one day he walked into the dressing room with a bowling pin” I said “what the fuck are you doing why would you buy a bowling pin?” Lmfao
Love the channel Marc
I always wandered what Frank and Kim's deal was. The dissonance between Francis' vocals and Deal's greogorian chant bass beat was harmonic duality at its finest. I used to think Frank the Black Catholic was the music theorists who understood Riemann and Pythagoras mathematics were musical in nature, too!
Gonna be honest: I don’t care if he cheated on his wife. Hes a flawed person like every other musician. He didn’t kill anyone, rape anyone, and isn’t a pedo sooo Ykw I still support him
At the end of the day, it’s all about the music
Facts
In Nirvana it was apparent that Dave was, indeed, "da man" behind the kit. Top ten if not in medal position. If Phil Collins or Don Henley would have made it "awesome", he woulda sang lead from back there. It just isn't feasible to exteact the amount of coolness a lead singer needs to have.
If Phil played on a Nirvana concert it would have been interesting to watch.
finally a channel with concise and interesting essays
sped up "outside in" backround footage really awesome
It would be awesome if you did there is nothing left to lose next!!
I’ve waited here for you
Edward Furlong
Can't believe three of my favorite artists Nirvana, Foo Fighters, and Alanis Morissette have something in common
This video has been staring me down all day
the colour and the shape is pretty cool.. but can you talk about pinkerton 200 more times
Love the vid but disappointed that Louise Post of Veruca Salt didn't get a mention here
my favorite foo album is their first one. i believe its self titled. the one with the pistol on the album cover. the colour and the shape is probably second though.
Your sense of humour is just amazing, I laughed out loud
YEAH HES DOING THE FOO FIGHTERS DISCOGRAPHY TOO
12:49 wind up snapping in the end, clever
Monkey wrench when he started screaming I kept talking about that song .so my boss at the time showed up to work with that CD ,the color and the shape.still have it. Thank you Dave an th the band
You're one of few great content creators I watch.
WHAT??? I DIDNT KNOW GOLDSMITH FROM SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE WAS IN FOO FIGHTERS
0:14 Decay by Home on a Foo Fighters album video? Awesomely unexpected
My brother gifted me the first Foo Fighters album for Christmas ‘95, and I liked it more than I liked Nirvana to be honest.
The second-album was even better, and both records are still stand-by listens for me.
Dave Grohl for President. 27 years and still holding the torch for rock and roll. Can’t wait to see them live next week.
Walking after you is my favorite foo fighters song.
i remember hearing everlong when i was young and thinking that song is good but it never stuck with me. Then about 8 years ago i heard it and it was like hearing it for the first time again and i loved that song and still do
I LOVE FOO FIGHTERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Gotta love the brief Aaron Paulsen cameo at 10:57
whats the song at 0:52? its on the tip of my tongue
HOME-Decay
i think a video on but here we are would be amazing when more info comes out
Gotta love the @AaronPaulsen feature in the video 😂
Dave’s the nice guy of rock and roll that’s why he has the best heart break lyrics.
He’s portrayed as a nice guy, he’s actually not
@@ChickenJoe-tq6xd proof?
@@Okayzy he killed his drummer, what other proof do I need lol
@@ChickenJoe-tq6xdhe didn’t kill him. You’re joking?
I wasn't expecting to hear Gran Turismo 4 music in the background
So first album is an instant classic and the second album was influenced by darker time in vocalist life, and a “founding” member left after 2nd album???
Vote 4 Grohl!! I'm in a tough spot rn, but hearing Dave's story encouraged me to keep pushing forward. i rly appreciate this video.
i have never thought of dave the same since i heard the way he absolutely fucked over william goldsmith, who is a colossal talent and great human whom i've had the pleasure of meeting after a sunny day real estate show. the way dave and the fanbase absolutely gaslit and dragged him all because they couldn't bear to accept that dave could have possibly done something shitty and maybe wasn't always the nice guy they like to think he is is absolutely disgusting
But what does the album cover meaaaaan
I loved the first British voice attempt 😂 AWESOME VIDEOS MAN❤ VOTE FOR GROHL 2024🤘❤
Walking After You is my favorite FF song, especially the X-Files mix. Love it!
Amazing stuff. Just subscribed!
The Aaron Paulsen cameo was amazing
