- I have a weird ass fear of riding a bike. Some of you will know I began trying to cycle for the time a while back and then I had an accident and didn't get back on it since. Ireland is now brought to a standstill so what better time to try again?

Good Job Nichole. Riding a bike is awesome. I started riding again last year at 59 yrs of age, hadn't ridden in almost 35 years.
I'm thinking of buying a High Nellie. For Atlanta traffic.
You know what they say, when you ride your bike into a poll and fall off giving yourself a concussion you have to get right back on, a few months later.
helmets are mandatory here in Canada for bike riding, though not everyone wears them ! helps to have one on when faced with running into poles and walls and fences like i have done ! LOL
@@SirManfly From what i know they are mandatory until 18 in canada. But that might have changed because i stopped riding over 10 years ago.
and I too stopped riding for some reason in 1990 !
I used to bike all the time. In fact I didn't have a license until I was 26 so my bike is how I got around, even when I moved 1000 miles away for school. Sadly I only got it out once the summer before last, then not at all last summer. Maybe when the weather warms up I'll get it out this year.

Well done on facing your fear. I had a bike accident a few years ago after riding for 40+ years. Climbing back on was a real battle and I am still cautious after learning what the recovery can be. Glad to see you were cycling without first having some Jack Daniels.

Well done NIcole! I've not been on a bike since I was a kido and in my late 70s don't plan on taking it up again. Always enjoy seeing you in the Try videos and any content you care to share is great, BTW for whatever the reason every time I see you I immediately think of Shirley Temple when she was a kido making movies. I can't do bikes after I broke my arm. Don't know if recumbents are a thing there... have to go to specialty shop here. Got a tadpole trike. Way more comfortable, and way more fun. Wicked fast going down hills though.

I live in France, and they keep adding more and more restrictions each day, like some twisted game of Simon says.
You can only go outside with a printed and signed statement that you are picking up groceries or going to work if you must, or else you are fined 135€, and up to 600€ if you don't comply. Your statement is only valid one hour, filled in with ink and not pencil, and don't even think about getting out twice!
Only one person in each vehicle, you can do sports a mile around your house (but only in sport gear, and you better run and not walk!), in Paris they can only run before 9AM and after 8PM, so no running during the day if you don't want to get body-slammed by a cop!
Don't even try to argue with the police, one man was fined for buying cookies (non-essential, we decide what you eat now!), a woman was fined for buying only sanitary pads (you can do without at home!), a teenage girls was even fined for taking her horses to drink at the stream next to her garden, before the police lied to the local press, pretending it never happened.

Way to go Nicole! You're one of my favorite folks in the TRY team. Yes to washing your hands and sanitizing the handlebars but I don't think you have to sanitize the entire bike. Good video Nicole .... I believe you'll find cycling easier, and more enjoyable, if you have someone assist you in adjusting the height of the seat and handlebars to fit you better ....... just saying ....... ;-p

To prevent falls, if I were you I would set the bike to your height. your saddle is set way too low and your handlebars could also be a little higher. then you have much more feeling with your bike.
The seat is adjustable with a wrench 🔧 or more likely an hex wrench. Maybe 5mm. It looks like the seat is all the way down?

What happened to you is called target fixation. Basically, you go where you look. You locked onto the pole and you hit it. Try to get into the habit of looking where you want to go, not at what you want to avoid. You'll find that your steering will just connect with where you're looking. When turning, look at where you want to end up and your eye will just connect the dots to get you there. So, when turning a corner, your head will be turned 90 degrees, looking at the exit of the turn. What happened to you is not unusual, you're not a bad cyclist, it's something that everyone has to learn. Car drivers, motorcyclists and bicyclists, all. Keep practising and stay safe. We care about you.

I loved this video! There weren't as many people out and about as I might have imagined there would be. Dubliners seem to be taking this situation more seriously than people here in the States.

A, your accident is why you should wear a helmet. B, your seat is set too low.
The last time I had a accident on a bike I broke my right collar bone into 3 pieces.

I would wear a bike helmet, though^^ it's safer if you ever (subconsciously^^) decide to bike into a poll and fall back again! i'm not making fun of you 'cause, I can use a bike but i'm afraid to do it on the road with cars/traffic). in france, most people use helmets (it's mandatory for under 12yo, but adults do wear it most of the time). Would that be considered ridiculous in Irland? or do people also wear helmets when riding a bicycle?

Bill McCrackin I knowwww I bought it initially because I was afraid of being too far off the ground but I’ll likely upgrade if I get more into cycling. Helmet was left in my family home and shops are closed so the lockdown is making it hard to access another one. Thanks for enjoying!
