  • The M2 MacBook Air 8GB vs. 16GB RAM for video editing. Is the M2 MacBook Air with 8GBs of RAM enough for video editing, or do you need 16GBs of RAM? The bigger question is whether the M2 MacBook Air is good for video editing regardless of the spec you choose.
Should you consider the M1 Pro as the obvious investment in your video workflow, or can you just get by with the M2?

I believe I've said it before, but I'll say it again. These days much of the content on UA-cam from "professional tech reviewers" has devolved into useless, shallow, clickbait videos. You know the ones, the "iPhone 4 leak!"... "Notchageddon"... "Why I returned the Space Grey MB Air for the SIlver MB Air" types that plague your feed. I'm aware that's what gets the clicks, but it's painful to watch.
Then I come across your channel. Consistently honest, relevant, and well produced. It's the quality Apple hardware review and troubleshooting content I've been looking for. For example, the M1 USB4/TB3 external SSD speed issue was frustrating to say the least. I was surprised by the lack of coverage available, but came across your series dissecting the problem, then subsequently testing usable and affordable solutions, and became a subscriber. It may be considered an edge case issue, but one I feel many will likely face with M1 macs at some point.
All this to say - thank you for the quality content, Kevin. Keep at it.

Hey, friend. Can’t thank you enough for your time here. I know that some of the content on the channel isn’t for everyone, and I often highlight points that may be frustrating to hear, but just want to help as many as I can make a buying decision.
If only I could check all the boxes 🤷‍♂️
That being said, I hope to continue uploading a variety of investigative content as well as answer those questions that may just be on the surface (and more frequent) where someone just needs a little nudge of validation of whether it’s the right investment for them.
Anyway, I’m going to start to ramble here.
Thank you again for taking the time to hang out and to share your thoughts. 🤘

Definitely agreed. I just got here a few minutes ago and had the same feeling from the get-go.
      Good, substantive stuff.
I´ll keep exploring the channel and see what I might come across.
Over the next couple of weeks, I am looking to buy a new machine and currently I am between MBA M2 16GB RAM/256SSD and MBA M1 8GB RAM/256SSD.
I´ve already done a ton of research on the matter and understand all the major differences between a single and a separate NAND chip (hence the slower read/write performance on the base version of MBA M2) and I really dislike Apple for this move. What I do like is the nice design, the midnight color (I know know, the smudges and what not but you throw a transparent casing over it and deal done, a great-looking, elegant piece of machine), magsafe, better display, battery life among others. I don´t do photo/video editing but I frequently work with Safari, Zoom, Acrobat Reader, Word, VLC, HTML5 all at the same time which isn´t as heavy as editing however it can put some real strain on your device. I am also looking for something that will serve well for the next 3-4years. Storage is not an issue cause I do use an external drive as well as a cloud so the 256SSD option is just good enough for me and has been with my previous Macbooks (upgrading to 512SSD will cost another $250 which I don´t fancy).
I would love to see a comparison between MBA M2 8GB RAM/256SSD and M2 16GB RAM/256SSD and see how the 16GB RAM performs and if it can improve the read/write speed.
So far, I haven´t been able to find one. There always seems to be some sort of an uneven pairing (8GB/256 vs 16GB/512 or 8GB/512 etc). I know that the MBA M2 has been on the market for nearly 1.5yrs now so I am a bit puzzled as to what I shall do next: get the MBA M1 and wait 6-8 months and see if Apple releases an updated MBA M2 version and then get the latest model or shall I just get the MBA M2 16GB RAM/256SSD now and be content with it.
Whoever dedicates their time to read this: thank you beforehand and will much appreciate any insight.
PS I´d literally started this comment with the first two sentences and then went on with the rest of it.

I’ve used the M2 MBA daily for non-creative work and it’s been (hands down) a fantastic machine.
The M1 is still in rotation and my wife uses that one has her daily.
The one thing I’ll say about the 16GBs of memory is that it seems noticeable over time. Basically, I rarely restart this machine. In fact, I ran a test where the machine wasn’t restarted for over a year. You can imagine the memory swap happening after that kind of accumulated tasks being performed.
But even if the machine was restarted/rebooted regularly, you’ll still have that build up of apps and tasks over time.
I’d say the extra 200USD for more memory is well worth it for the longevity.

I haven´t decided yet but I think I´ll go with the MBA M2 16GB/256SSD (currently priced at 1350euro).
It is just adding additional SSD puts it up at around 1600 euro (circa 1750USD) which is already quite pricey for this segment and the target audience and as so many have already mentioned - falls into MBP territory but then again, the base MBP only gets you 8GB of RAM and then you have to splurge another 200USD to have at least 16GB and it goes on and on and pretty quickly we get to that 2K threshold.
Typical apple price ladder. They are the masters at their craft in this aspect.
I´ve had MBPs before but this time I really dig the ergonomics of the AIR over the PRO. MBP is a beast and overall a better long term purchase, however not everyone is as needy and it may result in not getting the best out of it.
On the other hand, a slightly speced up AIR may (and most likely will) get the job done just fine.
Thank you for your time. @@KevinRossRN

@jakub_repela23 Happy to help. And, the thing about the MBA creeping up into the MBP territory is valid, but unless you’re pursuing heavier workloads, I would say better may be relative.
I honestly don’t touch my MBP for my daily use case. The battery life, weight, the overall footprint of the MBA is what I’m interested in…But that’s just me.
Either way, sending you my best. 🤘

These are both the 8-core GPU variants.
I think there may be a typo or two...but just had to get this up and keep moving forward. Keep in mind that your workflow may be different when it comes to video editing. Many creators have used the M1 successfully, but also keep in mind that the M1 was a breath of fresh air compared to what we had with Intel. These machines run circles around my previous MacBook Pros. Just understand that the M1 was what what we had at the time of initial release, however this isn't the case anymore.
I love these devices, but knowing that we have more capable devices for video workflows, it's hard to recommend it as your only editing device, especially for those of you who are asking about "future proofing."
I'll be testing other aspects and additional use cases. Sending you all my best.

I think an MBA M2 with 24GB will be doing fine enough for the few underwater filming projects I do in a year. I think the low weight and portability are more important in my use case than the extra power a MBP can offer. I ordered MB Air m2 with 8 CPU, 10 GPU, 24GB unified memory and 2TB SSD storage. It was really expensive, but I think that it is the best choice for me. I need it to edit 4k 60 fps video from Iphone 13 pro and GoPro 10. I tried to edit simple 4k video on basic MBA M2 in Apple store with different transitions and effects, Macbook made it easy. I am sure that the best version of this Macbook will make it very easy. I choose this version, because I often travel around the world and use final cut pro. Low weight and portability are very important for me. Price is really insane, but I really need it.

@@leksmoto Cool. That's exactly the configuration I am just about to order. I see it in the same way. Price is insane but this "Baby MBP" is almost perfect for travel and that's what I need too. A 14" MBP would almost have the same weight as my old i9. Because of its weight, I have almost never taken my i9 MacBook with me on my travels in recent years. Instead I took my even older 2013 MBA, which made it hard to view GH5 4K footage on the go. Instead I used it just as a copy station while traveling and did all the editing work on my i9 after I got home.
All in all, an uncomfortable workflow, that could be much improved by the new M2 MBA. So let's get this thing before inflation burns the money anyway... :-)

I work primarily on video podcast editing and I use Adobe Audition heavily, while I also edit videos sometimes but they are mostly 720p to 1080p of 1 hour footage with no color grading.
do you think the base model can handle it? I am looking for portable machine since my current laptop is an older version of a gaming laptop and it gets super loud under full load.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  Рік тому

As far as the video portion it seems you’ll be fine. Audition is likely where you’ll be pushing the machine quite a bit (seems like it), and you’ll likely only get thermal throttling with exports, even if that’s the case.
I know that others have just used the M1 MacBook Air successfully with Audition without issue. Even if those thermals climb on that export the efficiency will likely be so good that those higher thermals will only be very short bursts.
I always advocate for additional memory if you can afford it, however the base models I’ve tested have performed really well. I think you’ll be fine.

I mean, the M2 will handle all this. The effects may bog things down slightly. The M1 Pro is really about the thermal headroom, but the portability of the MBA is just silly. I carry this thing with me daily. I do use it more for day to day (not editing video), but I would say this is reasonable if you really just want that ultraportable.
Scrubbing through the timeline with the 6400 footage should be no problem. The export may throttle depending on the LUTs and effects, but nothing that would likely be a dealbreaker.

Exactly. It isn’t always immediate and there are traces of “junk” that may be left behind. There’s also some space that gets held as items either get backed up, moved to a different location, or eventually removed (deleted) from the cloud. So, yeah, not an instant purge in some cases.

Great stuff, man. Straightforward and extremely informative. A breath of fresh air, really. Subbed. Question: Got a base M2 model a couple of days ago. Will be using it for short (3-5 minute videos weekly) 1-2 timelines with sparse effects and minimal color grading in Resolve. Also using some Adobe AE. Down the line plan to use DJI Osmo pocket 3 4K footage (I am guessing 265 is a no go...) Good enough or should I swap it, if I can now, with the M2 16GB? Again, much appreciated for the non-nonsense comparison.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 місяці тому +1

      Thanks!
So have you tested it with AE yet? As far as the OSMO those compressed files are probably going to give the machine a run, but you should be able to scrub through your timeline.
The base model will hit that swap pretty quick, which you won’t notice until you start adding more to the timeline and then sprinkle in those effects…and of course if you’re running any other applications.
I still use this device daily, but not so much for creative work. I may run some Lightroom or photoshop every now and again, but I will say that I’ve typically run several browsers with a hundred+ tabs open and the 16GBs hasn’t let me down. Just a quick question regarding the M2 base model.
As I'm going to be new to video editing, is the base model good enough to handle 4k GoPro camera footage on iMovies.
I ask because at present I have an older (7 yrs) Acer i5 Windows laptop and have never had or used a Macbook before so I have little reference to how good they are apart from talking to some users and watching UA-cam. My Acer struggles quite a bit for the little editing practice I have used it for.
I like the idea of the M2 Air for portability and battery life. As I will be doing some short videos (about 10 mins long) in 4k, I just wanted to make double reassure myself that it will handle this with ease as its still a lot of money to pay out.
Any feedback would be much appreciated.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  Рік тому +2

It should handle shorter timelines. GoPro footage is compressed and sometimes takes more resource with “unpacking” that footage, but the M2 should handle it. I often recommend more memory, but only if it’s within your budget. As long as your work isn’t time sensitive, such as waiting a little longer for exports, although it doesn’t sound like your workflow is too intense.
It should definitely be a leap up from your current machine.

I’ve bought the base model M2 (8GB RAM/256GB SSD) and I need some advice!
Most reviews are saying the laptop in these specs will struggle with video editing and photoshop but a few are saying it will be capable. What are your thoughts/experiences? Will it be powerful and fast enough to allow me to edit video and photo efficiently?
FYI- I’ve only just started learning how to edit but I’m looking to progress to small personal and professional projects in a few months

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  Рік тому +4

The context that I’ve been giving advice on is that before the M1 came out we were working on x86 architecture chips that were capable (depending on the actual spec), but generated heat and some bottlenecking, and were just power hungry.
When M1 came out there were many videos including my own that showed how capable these entry level silicon chips were when it came to creative work.
We were comparing this to those x86 chips. However, when M1 Pro and Max launched it really showed us how capable this architecture can really be for creative work. And yes, these “pro level” chips were beating out the entry level ones just as one would expect.
When the M2 pro/max or whatever it’s called comes out it will show a similar bump in performance, although it may not be as big a jump, but still an improvement.
Adobe in my opinion has been hit or miss with these chips. Photoshop has been fine, but Premiere not so much. On my PC Premiere is awesome. Now, if you’re working with FCPX or even better, Davinci Resolve, then the experience will be great.
For personal work I think you’d be fine. Depending on what codec/footage you’re working with.
If you’re doing this professionally, I’d have more concerns.

I know, right? Actually it’s 8-Core. I’ll update that info in the description.
These devices would have wiped the floor (just as M1) with many of the x86 arch machines from a couple years ago, but now we have the updated MBPs and the Studio with M1 Max.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  5 місяців тому +1

GoPro footage is going to be “heavy,” in that timeline, but it’s possible. You’ll have a bigger thermal envelope in the 15” which will help.
iPhone footage should cut like butter. You’ll pretty much be on swap memory most of the time with the base model so keep that in mind with the size of that SSD.
The CPU and GPU are capable, just be mindful of thermal throttling when rendering and export. Rough cutting should be fine though. But again, GoPro is so compressed that the machine will need to do a little extra work to get it transcoded.

I’d recommend 16/512. If you’re running virtual machines, you’ll want the memory and the space…although you could run your VM off of an external, which I sometimes do for machines that don’t have enough storage, but the RAM helps greatly.
However, as far as price is concerned, you’ll notice the price getting closer to the 14. My build was 1799 (I think?)…however, I also understand that a 300 USD jump may not be for everyone’s budget.

FCPX and/or Davinci Resolve are definitely the way to go on these machines. If you’re filming with your phone then you should be fine. If you need to you can always transcode your footage to ProRes (you can do this in the editor) before working with it.
The export may take quite a bit longer because this is where the throttling will occur. But playing back and working with the footage should be fine.
Just keep in mind that the more complicated you get the more demanding on the machine.

Got a 10% discount and got the 16/512 for $1600, but I went to Best Buy to look at the M1 Pro 14” and I almost cancelled my M2 order except… the M1 pro would come out to around $2100-$2200 with tax. That’s a $600 difference… I get the M1 air comparisons, but I wholeheartedly know I’m paying an extra $200 for the color, new frame, and MagSafe, cause 2 ports was killing me, not that three is any better. But The M1 air at 16/512 is still $1500 with tax brand new, so I was okay with spending the extra money for the extra features. That’s why I showed what I was seeing.
And, there are so many comments swirling around about why we’re testing the machines like this when this isn’t what they’re intended for.
And so, this is the reason why I tested it like this because it’s being recommended for this task.
In general use, which I’ll have a video coming out soon on, this thing flies. It’s great.
If you’re looking to do some simple edits, then you’d likely be fine. However if you ever want to scale up to multiple 4K clips, or a longer timeline, or get creative with your edit, it’s going to struggle.
I’ve tried other timelines in addition to the ones here and it struggled with some of the project. I even tried to edit this video you watched on the MacBook Air and it beach balled several times.
I have no reason to justify this purchase I made to make myself feel better that I bought it primarily for video editing. I actually purchased these for a corporate environment (office work), and just wanted to show a creative use case.
For some creative workflows, it’ll be fine. Certain development tasks/coding, it’ll work.
And again, if your video edits are pretty simple, maybe you edit 1080p footage or convert the 4K to ProRes, then it will probably be great.
However as I said, if you have to adapt the way you work because of the tool, then to me it’s a non-starter. Just my opinion of course.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  Рік тому +1

I would say you’d at least use half of that space. Even with updates it’s not necessarily just piling on top of previous installs. I’d say if you’re willing to use an external SSD if you’re choosing to do any creative work, then that’ll certainly help.
My thing with portable devices is that I (personally) like them to be portable without tethering. However if you find yourself using it more as a desktop setup then the external drive may not be a big issue.
But, sharing my example of a M1 MBA my wife uses, she’s had it since launch. She loves the thing. The last time it was restarted was 240 days ago and it never hangs on anything. No beachball/spinning wheel.
She has the 256GB version and she’s used 160GBs of storage. This is a mix of random apps, some photos she’s downloaded and just a lot of “general” tasks she’s performed over the years.
      So, maybe that helps 🤷‍♂️

As far as the M1 13" base model I have for work purposes? Trade it in for credit towards the base model M114" (refurbished)! Then I am golden for another 2 years. But my next purchase will be the "Acasis 40Gbps M.2 Nvme SSD Enclosure, TBU401/TBU405" and extra thermal pads. I'm also eyeballing the "ACASIS: 10-In-1 Hub, NVMe SSD Enclosure, CM073" for the laptop.
PS: I held onto the iPhone 12 for 2 years and forgot it was the iPhone 12! 🤦‍♂I upgraded to the iPhone 13 Pro on T-Mobile in May '22, again, golden for 2 years! Glad I had the 13 Pro when I got a great shot on the wide camera lens of a 90% rainbow! Next, to shoot 4K B roll on my trip in August '22...

Thank You for your tedious attention to detail for a better overall informed decision for most people! 🙏As far as the M2 Laptops and Ventura? There are gonna be hiccups with the OS... Bet'cha! ☺Go with M1 Mac mini with 16GB RAM, or M1 Pro/Max base models, should be enough for half of the crowd... "Art is Right" Channel does testing with photography apps and expressed the same as you: The M2 laptops are great for basic usage and less time demanding audio/video/photography projects... If you need the horsepower? Go with the Pro/Max/Ultra M1 products! (as long as the apps are optimized for apple silicon)

As far as 4K timelines? I get it, good crisp final output! But ALL Content Creators on UA-cam forget a huge factor: Bandwidth Caps imposed but ISPs! I just started viewing 1080p content on UA-cam, since I bought a 32" 2K monitor, which is better than the 21.5" 2013 iMac screen! and I will be monitoring how much content comes in... @KevinRossRN  Рік тому

Exactly. It wasn’t designed for this as a primary use case, I agree. However, if you look through the comments here, some of my other videos, and of course other creators on the platform making similar videos, people are really interested to know. So, I tried to answer their question.
Consumers typically begin with price and make decisions from there. It is “cheaper” when compared to the PRO/Max M1s or M2s, however if you upgraded the Air’s storage and memory then it’s just butting up against the base PRO/Max machines…and you’ve got the thermal headroom. 🤷‍♂️

Hey mate , never owned a laptop in my life . I know how to use computers and laptops hence that being said .
Long time apple fan and own a iPhone 13 pro max and love it.
I now will be making videos for a living , roughly 3 videos a week at roughly 10-15 mins a video and all edited ( cooking shows ) travel blogs ect .
Roughly will need to store around 450 edited videos for UA-cam a year . Literally used for marketing and my own online business of blogs / blogging on my channel
Globally and the laptop will be used 5 days a week for roughly 10 hours a day .
What Apple Mac do I get …
What exact model that will be able to store everything and give me the best resolution for my very important videos .
    Thanks guys .
This will never be used for gaming strictly videos , social media and marketing.
    I’m looking at the apple MacBook Pro 13 M2 8GB/512GB .
    Do I need the M1 16GB/1TB ?

Congrats on the new endeavor. If you’re doing this for a living, then I’d definitely recommend the pro, but let me ask you where you might be in the world because there’s a very good deal in the states for a 14 inch MacBook Pro.
And as far as storage, you’re likely going to want to go with more internal storage or something external.
450 videos at an average of 2-3GBs per video (depending on resolution) will definitely put you over that 1TB threshold.

I guess once the actual videos are made and published online I could transfer them off the computer either the BIN or on a hard drive seperate .
I’m def not going to keep all the content saved on the laptop as it will be saved immediately onto all social media . After it’s locked in and done it will be deleted .
Does that make any sense ?
If that does make sense then shouldn’t I just get something cheap like a MacBook Pro A2 8GB / 256 .

Well, you must not have actually watched the video, but that’s fine, appreciate the engagement.
First off, Apple is the one that’s marketing this as a device that can edit video, and it’s right there on their website. So as I said, I’m here to debate that.
And so you must be new around here, so, welcome. As you’ll see throughout several videos from others on the platform that the community is genuinely curious as to whether editing video is possible, and should they make this investment for that particular task.
And in my summary, I gave that recommendation after everyone gets to see what I’m seeing with a few video timelines.

I use sidecar daily, even when I’m on an external display. As for the MacBook, it’s all preference. The M1 air is perfectly fine. I went with the M2 cause my wife has an M1, plus I like the design and MagSafe on the m2. Just get whatever you can afford.
