  • A video showcasing arcade games that use a rotary joystick in MAME. The stick is the GRS Super Stick. There are other games that can be played but these are all the games designed specifically for this type of stick.
    Game list:
    Heavy Barrel
    Midnight Resistance
    Ikari Warriors
    Victory Road
    Ikari III: The Rescue
    World Wars
    Time Soldiers
    Down Town
    T.N.K. III
    Gondomania
    Guerrilla War
    Xybots
    Top Gunner
    SAR - Search And Rescue
    Bermuda Triangle
    Cal .50 - Caliber Fifty
    Four additional games can be found here along with special instructions on how to map the controls for them:
    • Rotary Dial Games in M...
    I am playing about all the games with the 8-way top. A few such as Time Soldiers and Cal 50 are likely better with the 12-way top. Xybots did not use the same type of joystick but has a similar function so it's included here.

    thanks for this informative video! I love Jackal / Top Gunner and had no idea there was a rotary supported version. I guess it is the file named 'jackalr' and is probably a location test version that did not see a larger release. Very cool to find this out!

    Just got my tsticks super stick kit this week, installing it in my arcade board was a breeze but I was having a minor issue getting it to rotate properly (user error!) because most of the first YT clips show it in action with the mode/way button set to lavender and fading, well, that wasn't working for me (at least in MAME). Then I stumbled onto this video and spotted the button set to SOLID and GREEN running Heavy Barrel perfectly and bang, that solved my problem!!! This is a great addition to my gaming rig, I'm really happy with it! Thanks for the video and list of other cool games, can't wait to play them properly now!

    Nice video with excellent game selections! I didn't know about most of the games shown... Just got my GRS Super Joystick recently and will be putting it through its paces soon!

    The best games ever made : Forgotten World and Time Soldier were Rotary. And Arkanoid.
    The day the rotary and spinner died is the day the gaming industry died.

    I never knew that jackal / top gunner was a rotary dial game. No wonder why it was so difficult with out one.

      I'm not sure what the story is with that game. The one that uses the rotary controller is listed as a bootleg.

    what a great showcase of games you can play with joystick. I am still struggling to get mine working, everything I see want us to use that damn box as the cp lol.

      They have an Ikari themed wooden box you can buy but it's pretty pricey. Your controller isn't working at all?

    • @alexrobles7744
      @alexrobles7744 7 місяців тому

      @DarthMarino no. I am making a control panel will types of controllers. I am thinking it needs the way/mode button that I didn't want. Movement works but not the rotation

    • @DarthMarino
      @DarthMarino  7 місяців тому +1

      You definitely should have that button. I have it set to solid green (no blinking) for the games in this video and solid blue for the dial games.@@alexrobles7744

    Ikari Warriors and the other rotary joystick games used 2 buttons (A and B) and your controller has 6 buttons. Did you just assign the coin up and start button to the other buttons? Going to try and place on of these joysticks in a metal or plastic enclosure for use with MAME.

    • @DarthMarino
      @DarthMarino  9 місяців тому

      Yeah, I use the buttons on the right for coin and start. The joystick comes with the 6 buttons and the box has openings for all of them. Ikari III uses 3 buttons so I would make a triangle of 3 buttons if I made the box myself.

    Very helpful and subscribed. This pointed me toward multiple games I did not know that I was able to get to work. Appreciated seeing the mode/way switch was solid green so I could at least get a starting point for many games if not final config. Ironic it takes some looking to find versions without joystick hack - but inspired getting multiple things going with a mix of known classics I could not play right until now and stuff you just pointed out to me. I'm a couple days in and built it in the supplied cardboard box for now. It has been a while since so many ('new') games were suddenly in reach. instructions, manual were good but took some time to get to private videos from QR codes in manual and this vid took me to another level after watching much of that. I have questions but have so many things working now that I am confident I will figure it out. I think the community will .. anyway - I got to go play Heavy Barrel..

    • @DarthMarino
      @DarthMarino  10 місяців тому

      Yeah, the solid green mode seems to be the best option for me. It makes sense for most games. I don't want to change the knob often even though a few games like Cal 50 or Time Soldiers are probably better with a different knob and blinking or fading green light. Heavy Barrel has always been a favorite of mine. I have played a little of the semi-sequel Midnight Resistance before but I really loved the full play through with this controller. Top Gunner is an interesting one because it is actually a bootleg that adds the rotary function instead of removing it like a lot of those hacks you encountered.

    Now that you have had it for a good while, do you recommend it, or something different

    • @DarthMarino
      @DarthMarino  3 місяці тому +1

      There's not really something different available but I would recommend it. My only complaint is a nitpick that you don't really notice when playing.

      @@DarthMarino Would you recommend them as full time replacements for the tankstick joysticks? I have a set of older rotary joysticks from ultramarc, but they are so tall that I had to take out the bottom of my tankstick. I've been looking for a replacement and I was thinking this might be it. I'm worried about the quality of the controller for other games (i.e. non-rotary games)

    • @DarthMarino
      @DarthMarino  3 місяці тому

      @@googlecloud-kevin9804 I personally wouldn't. I like the feeling the traditional bat-top stick for most games. I could see these being annoying if I'm frantically spinning the stick to do Zangief's pile driver or something and it clicks to the next spot. I'm always a proponent of having separate controls for specific functions instead of the one-size-fits-all approach which is why I have so many.

    Did you use the same top for all games? Would have been nice to show which top/settings were used for each game if they weren't all the same.

    • @DarthMarino
      @DarthMarino  10 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, I just used the 8-way top for everything in the video. Most of the games aim in 8 directions so it makes sense. Also, for the purpose of the video, 8-way mode is a solid light so would be less distracting. Green is for keyboard mode which is what I've been using. A few games such as Cal 50 and Time Soldiers are likely better with the 12-way top. It's still new so I don't know if I'm going to stick with this. I guess time will tell.
