Why is everyone either confused or misinterpreting the story when the context clues are right there in the game?
This isn’t a story of an abused child, *Its the story of a Vain Narcissistic Nobleman who was an absolute monster & downright CRUEL to everyone around him, down to his disfigured son he didn’t want to reflect poorly upon HIS image & the babies he had murdered after sleeping around with many women* ! One night he is drugged at a party where he hallucinates and causes a fire of which he survives yet is horribly disfigured. Upset from his new disfigurement he destroys mirrors and portraits, Drinks, locks himself up and in his isolation comes to reflect upon himself and all the pain he’s caused others. The symbols of the traumatic flashbacks are present in his room in the True Ending and the ghosts singing his tale are The ugly child he was ashamed of, The mother, the maid and ALL OF THE BABIES.
what's more, is the scar that appears on the nobleman may of been the only real injury he actually had. Meanwhile everyone else at the party burned because he freaked out over one imperfection on his face... He may have regrets, he may want to apologize, he may be haunted by EVERYTHING he did, but he is not a good person.
Not in the slightest.
He burned his bridges, and squandered the last bit of hope and redemption he could of had...
He even sings with the last of his oxygen that he admits: He was a cruel and unlovable bastard.

Actually I think that was the older maid that poison him and appeared in one of the flash backs with the son and mother. Otherwise you’re entirely correct and got it written down very well 👍
Fun fact: this was all hand drawn making it more impressive
For those who are confused Ugly is a game that is about a man going through his trauma/depression because when he was growing up his dad was abusive to him and his mother ( maybe) did not care about him so he became a selfish prince who cared more about him self them anyone else
Bosses Explained:
Mummy: The mummy was him after the fire that burned his face
Slime: After he saw his face and how deformed it was he went through a mental breakdown and stared painting over any paintings of him showing his beauty before the fire ( he became jealous of his own paintings)
Glass King (or Ice King): During his mental breakdown he grabbed a hammer and started to destroy mirrors because he did not want to see his reflection in them
Lock King: After the mental breakdown he (or during it ) he locked himself away from the community and people who loved him because he was to afraid of being seen
Drunken King: After his mental breakdown he became depressed and stared drinking to cope with his sadness
Flames: You already know but Flames is a manifestation of the fire the made him ugly
( During the secret ending cutscene we see him except himself just to give up and “hung himself” which represents him not expecting himself and when he tries he wakes up again just to relive his trauma over and over and over again never excepting himself)
If you or someone you know is going through depression get them help and talk to them you can save a valuable life.

Is not actually that the son grew up to be like his father, but rather the protagonist is the father himself.
The game kinda tricks you into thinking is the son going through traumatic memories of his childhood with his abusive dad only for the twist at the final boss to reveal that it was the father regretting(?) all of his sins.

You can actually see the son in a credits song sequence with his face badly burnt because the dad forged him with a flaming hot mask because he didn’t want to look at his face

@The_mexercist: Actually, UGLY is about the father... Throughout the entire play through you were viewing the father's memories... All his regrets, all of his sins, eventually becoming too much to bare... His own staff that were still alive even plotting to kill him after discovering the properties of the mirror, by setting up a noose in the place he'd least expect... The same noose that was tied to ALL his sins and past mistakes and regrets... He wanted to escape, but you know what they say about evil people: They get an evil ending... Even if he tried to apologize to everyone he wronged, it wouldn't of made a difference in the end: His fate was damned by the people who condemned his past actions who used to be truly loyal.
The different Bosse represent his past
Mummy: him after the fire insident
Slime: the paint he uses to mess with the paintings
Ice King: is him breaking the mirrors
Lock King: represent his isolation
Drunken King: is him drinking over his depretion
And flames representing what caused all the strife
So I suppose the MC's ability to use his reflection represents, well, his resolve to self reflect on his past?
So he burned his face, got disfigured, got so angry that he got disfigured that he smashed all the windows and destroyed all the paintings (for some reason) then locked himself up and drank away his problems?
And then he went on a spiritual journey to beat his inner demons, but in the end it didn't work forsome reason?

@@robertwildschwein7207 Mirrors, not windows. He splattered the paintings because they were all what he used to look like, somebody he could never be again; someone outwardly attractive. So in a fit of anger he threw paint on the face of each one because he didn't want any reminders of what he'd lost.

Full disclosure that isn't the "ice King", if anything he's the "Mirror King"- all the stuff that looks like ice is just mirrors, but can't say i blame ya for thinking that it really does look more ice-based...

There’s a secret ending for this game and let’s just say it’s not pretty. After having navigated to castle and once again realizing the monster he was, what do you suppose the now former king does? Put down the bottles? Learn to see himself in the mirror without cringing in fear? Go out into the world at last and live a better life despite no longer being handsome and dedicated himself to being a better person? NO! Just as he decides to try and get out of the castle, the scaffolding under him breaks away and he accidentally hangs himself.

The main character is a king who was an absolute monster of a horrible father who forced his son to wear a mask because he saw his baby as ugly. The king was vain and uncaring, slept around with his maids. During a party, a fire broke out that burned and disfigured his face.
The mummy: was him after the fire.
The slime: the king painted over every one of his own portraits cause he was jealous of his own former good looks.
The glass King(the crystal): he broke all the mirrors with a hammer cause he couldn’t stand looking at his own scars
Lock king: he locked every door in the castle and locked himself away from the world.
Drunken king: the king started trying to drown his sorrows in whatever whines and beers he could find.
And now the ugly
King is stuck living an infinite spiral of his own trauma and depression.
Looking at the mummy boss, I thought this would be another generic gimmicky meme wannabe game, but actually it's quite interesting and... sad.
I really feel bad for the main character.
He just a antagonis in this story he just do awful thing in memory reflection so he deserves that tormented

@@robertwildschwein7207going off the ending song lyrics, I can only assume he killed or disowned his child due to not being beautiful like him, as well as his wife for protecting him. Whatever he did, it was horrible, and that indicated what he really was on the inside. Ugly.
@@viriyananda He's not an antagonist- since he's the one the story follows, he's the protagonist regardless of how horrendous of a person he is (that doesn't make him the hero, though)
(Sorry if this comes off as kinda rude, I intend it as helpful since a lot of people don't realize that the meanings of "protagonist" and "antagonist" don't coincide with those of "hero" and "villain")

To summarize the mummy represented the fact that he covered up his face to avoid looking at himself and the Slime was actually paint because he was covering up pictures to avoid remembering what happened the Ice King was actually mirrors that were broken because they showed him what he looks like now and the walking was the fact that represented the fact that he locked himself in he locked everyone out and the drunk King represents the fact that he went to drinking to cope with it in the fire represents his past showing what happened

The actual names are The Bandaged (the first one), The Covering (the second one), The Crystal King (the third one), The Gatekeeper (the fourth one), The Poisoned (the fifth one)
In the end, we find out that we had been playing as the father all this time.

Mc trapped in loop where he must fight boss that actually his traumatic state. Mummy is when he got burned and need to wrapped around his body, slume is he vandalized his own pictured with paint, ice king is when he broke the mirror, lock king is he locked himself, and drunken king is when he drunk himself. For flames boss, maybe its the cause of mc has ugly face due burn injury on whole body.

What a sad game. Traumas that spiraled into depression and ruthless emotional breakdowns.
I honestly don't like how he has practically no escape, but. You can't really command a life already led to tell a happy story - especially painful ones like this.
So the bosses were all actually aspects of himself and represent stages of his past. Cool twist.

Probably just the oldest/veteran maid of the estate, if I had to guess. You see a similar lady with same green broach in the Secret Ending, which implies that the maid with the Chicken mask in the flashback was her.
Given the circumstances of who she had to work for, no wonder she went for the poisoning/fire scheme.

I feel it's almost a representation of what modern society has done to the human psyche: if you're not attractive, you're worthless. This man surrounded himself in luxury because he could, and surrounded himself with ugly people to make him stand out. Anyone else attractive had to wear a mask.
What was put in his drink, which I assume was some sort of hallucinogen, made him see what he really was on the inside: *ugly.* Beauty can be only skin-deep for some, and that was the case with this man. He didn't want to face this reality, and made a decision in his hazy state that cost him his outward beauty. The bosses are representations of his downward spiral afterward; the mummy was when he was in hospital after being rescued from the flames, the slime was him splattering the paintings of himself to remove any visual reminder of what he'd lost, the ice king was him smashing the mirrors so he wouldn't have to see the ugliness of himself, the lock king was his self-isolation, and the drunken king was him drinking to cope.
The flames, meanwhile, were what took everything from him - and he was the one who caused them.
TL;DR, man screwed himself over by being cruel to others, had a hallucinogen poured in his drink and he saw his own internal ugliness, proceeded to smash the mirror he saw it in with a candelabra which started a fire, he couldn't get out of the flames and was burned horribly which made his face match what he saw in the mirror, went on a downward spiral of depression which was represented by the bosses which were really his own inner demons.

@@robertwildschwein7207 What I meant is that modern-day beauty standards have really messed some people up, not that it's only in modern society. Today society seems to only care if you're skinny (without need for a corset) and have a pretty face (whether it's natural or plastic surgery doesn't matter). It does seem that we're starting to move away from that, though, but it's very slow progress. Hope this cleared things up, I couldn't think properly at the time I replied.
