- Manju Singh ( #ShefaliShah) and her husband are hosting a get-together of families on a really warm night. Between the snacks, drinks and the laughs, something completely unexpected happens. Watch #JUICE, a powerful #shortfilm written and directed by Neeraj Ghaywan. Now playing. #theselectones
Synopsis:
"Juice," a short film directed by #NeerajGhaywan starring the talented Shefali Shah, is a thought-provoking short film that delves into the subtle dynamics of gender roles within Indian households. Set on a particularly warm evening, Manju Singh (played by Shefali Shah) and her husband are hosting a get-together for their friends and family. The gathering is filled with #laughter, #snacks, and #drinks, but beneath the surface, tensions simmer.
Manju, like many women, finds herself relegated to the sweltering kitchen, managing the food and drinks while the men comfortably enjoy themselves in the living room in this short film. The contrast between the two spaces becomes a powerful visual metaphor for the gender divide. As the evening progresses, the oppressive heat in the kitchen mirrors Manju's growing frustration and sense of confinement.
The climax of the #film is both unexpected and deeply impactful. Manju's quiet rebellion against the ingrained patriarchal norms is a moment of liberation that resonates powerfully with the #audience. "Juice" is not just a short film; it's a statement about the often-overlooked struggles and silent strength of #women portrayed by Shefali Shah.

This is so relatable. When I was a child, I was told to leave plates after eating. My sisters would collect the plates of my father and mine. As a child, it never bothered me. It was the norm. But as I grew up, I began to understand that it was so wrong. Women are always treated like slaves. Now I do all my chores myself. I am learning to cook as well. And I will definitely share household chores with my future wife.
Glad you had that realisation😊 More power to you.
Yes even in my house I was told to pick my brother's plate after dinner but then later on I insisted him to pick up his own dishes and plates
Great mentality..😊
Wow broo.. Your mind is as beautiful as your face💓💓
That is a nice thought. May you be blessed with an equally understanding wife.
The girl was told to serve the plates and the boys were left to play.. strong message, totally loved the story and the writer.

Hey tmkc
During my college days my papa used to force me to help my sister to put the washed plates and utensils on shelf. He also instructed me to do various household activities which i didnt liked. But somehow it became my habit to keep my house clean and tidy. Thank you papa for giving me right teachings. My wife is happy as we together are doing the household work.

The one thing I noticed was how when the pregnant couple enters, the husband says bhabhi le jaaiye Sara din Ghar me Khali hi to rehti hai and later his wife tells other ladies how her husband made her leave the job , this shows the double standards by men .
Those eyes of pain, frustration and anger in the climax is out of words. Great job shefali ma'am

But girls should only clean , cook and spread her legs that's what I believe....tell me If I am wrong 🤨!!
Did anyone notice one of the ladies calling her daughter to serve food for her brothers? That's exactly what is wrong with our culture. Teaching us since childhood that girls need to serve and boys need to be served. I could see my childhood there. and I'm sure many of you too. Please, let us promise ourselves that we wont pass on this discriminating attitude to our next generations.
very true. we need to start raising the boys better than that.
I have just mentioned that in my earlier post, though among bengalees we don’t have this attitude (generally speaking) at all
its the story of almost every household
Roshni Raoof . It was brilliant that they put it there. I could totally connect with this!
Roshni Raoof when I was young I was told girls shouldn't laugh too loudly. I was 8. The world is fucking messed up.
Shefali is a gem. She didn't need to say a word but she slapped the faces of all that were there. And that look of defiance, amazing.
What a great actress
A good director can make anyone act
The reason I liked the ending is because Manju goes and sits next to the cooler in the end. Without saying a word to her husband or any of his male guests. She sits there, breathing heavily...drinking the cold juice and just breathing. It's a silent slap to the husband who forgot about the fan. A silent slap to all the male guests who are now forced to wonder how their wives are coping inside the kitchen.
And perhaps it was not the audacity of Manju but the realisation of their actions which caused everything to go so silent in that room.

yup so right , I see my mom cooking and cleaning all day in every family gatherings and she barely have to time to enjoy
They did a really good job at playing with the sounds, from the very beginning, the background sounds of utensils and men talking loudly, it did a really good job at making me feel suffocated.
And when she came out in front of the men, the music turned it into a very soothing and breathable environment.
In the beginning, when the camera follows the ladies in the kitchen, took us from that narrow corridor to the women's world, like an air pocket in a cave.

When people said women are weak and low and exhausted generally
This is what I see, 24/7they are in front of gas stove, closed room with lack of oxygen, making them lethargic due to no fresh air, lifting heavy vessels, burning hands in hot oil and rotis, and still living with the burn wounds, having shortness of fresh breathe in a suffocation filled hot room, wet body with large stream of salt water (sweat) flowing all over body, do not have freedom to lift up the top or dress even in feont of lady mates and wipe the excess sweat amd take air, Total top to bottom, left to right thick fabric clothing in name of fake modesty to further trap that excess heat inside her body and skin making her 'Body organs' function slowly and bring her lethargy (excess heat bring weakness and lethargy and dehydration), no view in front of eyes except steams out of cooker, gas and oil pans, etc. (Makes a person's mood further depressed), women doing all these heavy works with a hidden 'Stress and fear' in minds that what if men and kids don't like our food taste , will we have to make it again, a stressed mind results in compromised physical health. After, food is cooked, she does heavy work of carrying all heavy vessels and tongs and hot jars to living room and constantly attending orders of men on table like a waiter in hotel with a hidden 'Fire in belly'. The men and kids gobble food like greedy, leaving behind less tidbits and leave to sleep or chat , women washing and cleaning men's soiled , saliva-plaited dishes with vim, and keeping back in dish racks , till that their appetit has GONE due to physical exhaustion as (digestion is internal labour), and they silently and unexpressively sit on ground taking own plates, and serving those leftover tidbits (forget abt balanced diet, its tidbits after men and kids ate) and eat alone with no GIGGLING, laughing, watching tv or not having a 'HAPPY feast'and no men or child gies to talk and entertain them or serve them and ask them 'Was your hunger fulfilled with thise tiny todbits and leftover cold meal pieces?'
And LO ! All the tidbits unfortunately are LOST in monthly bleeding periods, again rendeeing her malnourished and anaemic and weak.
While if its a married woman , when after the hungry and weak and tired woman returns in a bedroom in myth that she will relax at least an hour full, she is many times forced by horny husband to sleep chupchap on back while bending knees on bed, in a woman in bottom like a submiisive 'Object' , speechless, energy less and ofc with no libido with all the malnourishment of day, while full bellied, enthusiastic and empathyless husband jumps like a beast on her in name of 'Husband's need, physical relations and traditional wife's duty'.
@@ABCDEFGH-qx6yn Very well put.
The way this short film has portrayed such a real whole picture from even the smallest of actions captured is just mesmerizing. The patriarchy and casteism is so deep rooted in our society that people dont even realize it or just dont wanna admit it no matter how educated and liberal they want to portray themselves
I hadnt noticed the "casteism" aspect till I saw how the maid was served in the metal glass. Very deep rooted which makes us blind to this.
It's the opposite in my family mother, sister, neices neither do house work, nor earn money ,nor outside work except attend get togethers and shop for clothes. They can't do work at home nor get work done with maids can't even keep a maid for a year.

What a powerful work Neeraj Ghaywan!
Few things I admired the most:
1. The dark theme for a "supposed to be" happy get-together. The starting sequence in the beginning conveyed the main message of the film
2. But it was the small scenes in the film said the larger picture and problems in the society. We all have seen this in our families where woman get cooked up in the kitchen and men enjoy the "time-off" in the living room.
3. Shefali Shah is par excellence. Manju's character is so well etched, she is not just furious by her husband who ignored the fan-fixing and other man, but she is furious at the other women too who continue to teach other women to be like them. The steel cup for maid and the lady asking her daughter to feed her brother/s (notice she calls them "bhaiya" so the son is older than the daughter).
4. It not only reflects how men treat woman, but it shows what woman teach other woman/girls when they know it's not right. It also shows the deep casteism and classism in the society, the behavior towards our servants.
5. The music in the end gave me goosebumps
Kudos and utmost respect to all the homemakers!
Dhruv Shah perfectly written. You my mate, stole my words.
Also when the daughter was called to help in serving and the boys were still busy playing

Paritosh Jadhav women are capable of working .. nasa,TCs,infosys, isro all have women employees.. so if men don’t work women can do their work but can men do the work women do.. rarely yes.. sadly even no in my own case however I’m only 18 still
Juvina Rewari sexy
+Paritosh Jadhav Actually no. In the situation; it is clearly mentioning that she was forcefully stopped by her husband from working after marriage. And even if she had refused and wait for a husband who "ALLOW" her job still all the household works like making great Indian dishes, changing napkins of children, cleaning toilets&kitchen etc will automatically reserved for the lady of the house
my mother and father both are working... From childhood I have seen my father helping mother in kitchen..though mom is best at cooking ..but father help in other works like cutting vegetables..., washing utensils..., making dough ..etc....He cooks food whenever He gets a holiday, or mom is in office etc... Even my grandmother became a school teacher after marriage. ..so growing in this perspective.... It will be intolerable... for me to be married away to a family with this shit mentality.... better to remain unmarried...
nice concept... nice acting....SUPERB...
@Paritosh Jadhav вc
The way the little boy was so confident in talking with superiority to the girl is evident of the fact that boys are trained to feel superior right from their childhood. This is the reflection of the society that we live in, where the difference in the rules for girls and boys is inculcated right from the childhood. Also women accepting and supporting the unacceptable behavior of men boosts their unnecessary ego, some women do it by choice to look "gharlelu" (couldn't think of another word) while some do it out of fear for facing the consequences should they take a stand. As is rightly said, be the change you want to see, the female protagonist took a stand finally starting a new change for herself. I have lost so many friends, because they still believe in this old school behaviour and me taking a stand did not go down well with them accusing my spouse and myself being unethical. I strongly believe they are definitely among the current 4.1K dislikes and I want to say thank you for making room for practical people in my life.
Your comment is the story of my life. Giving words to my thoughts.
I don't think it was with that attitude the boy spoke. It was rather a "jiski laathi, uski bhaiss" type attitude
same as me....some girls thought they look eligent and portray themselves as bechari
Yes I so agree rn…
Thats bullshit... Go to any house and see the sisters dont take shit from brothers. Dont bring this bs into brother sister relationships
I can so relate with this, my dad would bring his friends home for drinks, and mum and i would be busy in the kitchen preparing snacks for them...till one day i could not take it anymore and confronted my dad infront of all his friends....and never did my dad brought his friends again for drinks...my mum could not confront him, i did it for her....
I'm not sure, if such chauvinism exists in the current age. May be it's more the other way around
God bless you..
Always stay this brave and protect yourself and your mother..
It's so imp to take stand for ourselves and for our loved ones..
So happy that you took this step..
Bless youuuu
Even I have seen this scene in my growing up years, but I guess today’s generation boys are quite sensitive, infact my son complains that more than didi he has to work in the house😃
Super
I wish I could do the same
The movie definitely portrays some deep themes beautifully. It starts with the sounds of clanking of utensils, which is then taken over by the laughter of men, symbolizing how the struggles of women are often walked over by the blusters of men. The men boast about having to work in strenuous conditions and we see that the women working in the kitchen are no different. Starting from handling hot contents in the kitchen to trying to repair electrical stuff themselves, the women face it all or mostly. The first few shots are of only one woman serving the men but we are soon shown the grim face of the rest of the women as well. Even the children are not spared from the faults of the patriarchal society. The caste system seeps in when we see that the hostess rubs her dirty hand off her maid's head while she climbs down the stool. Showing the maid rejecting the tea being served in a different glass reflects self-dignity of a person, I believe. Finally, the hostess realizes the flaws of the household system which even involves the children, and she decides to take a stand and face her husband. Only then do we get the sound of the cooler working as if breathing new breath into the household - men realizing their hypocrisy and women taking their stand. And not to forget all the beautiful lines, especially those comparing Hillary and Trump.
Can anyone tell me what is the relevance of juice here ?
@@debolinabhattacharya9801 I suppose it's a symbolic representation of women taking the reins of their lives in their own hands... taking up the courage to neuter the patriarchal demands... taking control of their share of life and responsibilities.
Even a small detail like 1:38 has a big impact - man walks into the house first without leaving the door open for his pregnant wife. In other countries the gentleman thing to do is open the door for his wife first then walk in after

The only person who was actually helping the leading lady is her servant. But when asked for a cup to offer a tea to the servant, the pregnant woman is giving a steel glass... The eyes of that servant at that time was the most painful one, I think, in this whole film...
Then obviously, the climax, brilliant...
Ruby Rose pregnant women ko aise Nahi kerna chahiye na
I think there was a massage behind, that even women is not supporting a woman. ( Tho maid was helping women only ).
So all the time ,its not about any gender... Samay ane par sab apna rang dikha dete hain
It was not good she is same like other ladies
Sabse bada gyan aurat hi aurat ki sabse badi dushman hai .1st 2 Ladies that countered pregnant women.2nd how small girl was treated .3rd how the maid was treated.

@swadhinsenapati1343 that's their profession. But a woman is expected to do 5 X more work. Very unfair. And it's not about profession. Maybe you need to watch it again. A woman never gets a vacation.
Great movie.
Its more about mindset. How men enjoy on the labour of women and degrade them in offices and homes both. All men characters in the movie are very disregardful to all wives. They didn't offer them to have some cold/hot drink together. They didn't offer to help. They didn't bother to have their company and collective talk, they didn't bother about giving break to people working in kitchen. They didn't bother to even offer a seat to the pregnant lady. They didn't offer to help in the kitchen with the fan, and some smaller work, like serving etc.
This set up wherever it is followed is very suffocating.husband and wife are supposed to be friends, partners, and not master and slave...
Good message from the movie.
The video is something else. Honestly. With barely 4-5 dialogues of Shefali how the society badly treats a woman is shown
Firstly after marriage she is the maid of the house.
She has to cook clean and take care of every little thing while the so called "man of the house" enjoys drinking alcohol and smoking cigarette
Secondly when all the women are traeted the same in their respective households , still instead of supporting each other they make sure to bring each other down.
They just are standing in the kitchen in the name of helping the host lady. They are obviously seeing her struggle with the chicken dish , even then no comes forward to help her. On the top of that 2 of them are watching videos.
These socalled friends even want to damage your relationships and dynamics with anyone for eg. Here the maid.
It is obvious that the househelp lady and the protagonist have more connection than the boss-servent relationship still that pregnant lady interferes in their dynamics.
And sadly the protagonist lets her do it coz after pregnant lady is her so called friend and the househelp lady.
Moreover the mothers are forcing their own children to such toxic patriarchy.
And that husband? The talks about Emperor Akbars dysentery are so important to him that he cant even help his wife.
The effect of men being superior than women has also been embedded in the innocent minds of those children.
Only fighting for Hindus and Muslims is not the only problem in our society.
If you open your eyes and are more receptive in your daily life , you will find so many things that you can stop and correct. Just to make our community our society a better place

The little girl who carries the dishes for her brother reminded me of myself. I am the most pampered one in the house after two brothers. But these little things always showed up. They could sit and chat and play while carrying the tea tray was girls' job. And it seemed like natural selection. This has been persistent over the years. It doesn't make a difference whether you do a job or not, you are young or old, women are treated in same way across cultures. Sometimes women themselves glorify it. It is the worst part. And in a family setup, you can't ask questions to your mum. Like the little girl was shut up and made to carry the plates, trust me the scene is so original, I could see myself in her.
Thanks for the film.

I m quite lucky to have parents who believed, practised equality. I did always have a good support from them in following my decisions of life n i always lived upto it. I don't like such people who either place girls on head n boys as fools or boys r kings n girls as servants.... lets live n let live

I really can never satisfy myself from watching this again again and every time the respect gets stronger... brought tears in my eyes in the ending scene fr!!! The disappointment and pain in her eyes says it all!!!! And the thing that women are themselves enemies for each other like the woman showing the sarcasm about Manju leaving her job and when she had had enough and tried to initiate her thoughts the ladies were giving her "that judgemental" look for not having a conservative mindeset....
This comment section is one of the best for me till now!!
The scene where the mother comes and calls her daughter to serve her brothers, that is when the patriarchy pervaded. Irony but a women herself promotes patriarchy subconsciously. Excellent performance by the whole cast.
Gud
Hmm so woman see patriarchy curse patriarchy comment on social media against patriarchy but still allow oneself to fall prey to patriarchy.... ridiculous
Spot on !
Women have gotten so comfortable with patriarchy that they'll complain about it but won't try to find a way out. It's this "it sucks but I have to do it" type of mentality. Unfortunately they don't realise that there is another way.
Dristisikha Baruah so true...
As men we should shame about ourselves. This is an iconic one and slap for all those men who do exactly. Shefali Sha was brilliant there with her heart touching performance.
this is what feminism and gender equality about. mentality and so called tradition.
it is an unhealthy tradition to pass on, the little girl experience and the way the little boy threatened her, the husbands and the male relatives (the conversation context), the husband and wife treatment, the women with the tradition and belief practices (which she didn't explain to her daughter), the way the maid was treated (just because she was a lower class labor), and social expectation and judgment (married or not married, have children or no children).
India or not India, Chinese, western and other Asian countries. Women, Men, Children.
such a powerful short film! i look forward for more film like this
Elly Tam this indeed is what feminism is, we support your cause fully
Elly Tam ....my dad too
Very very relatable 😭😭 I thought it only happens in our family. Feel really sad for everyone . I too see my mom and chachis and bhuas and massis the same way . And I do serve food to my brother. He gets food first . And after eating, either I or my mother pick up the plate of my father and brother. And everyone take it like so normal. But I used to think about it. And now after watching this video and reading the comments, I know it's same everywhere. 😭 We need to stop guys. These men and society needs to stop. The must give the atleast equal respect If not more. Really very disappointed. Being a 14 yr old I notice each and everything but sadly couldn't express . I feel so bad for everyone. 😭
That final glare by Shefali Shah. Damn! Goosebumps!

Bipin Pandey on point
Bilkul sahi farmaaya Pandey ji..... Bit off topic, I used to refer people with Pandey surname as Pandey.... but then "OFFICE OFFICE" taught me its always Pandey Ji.... :P
The way she keeps toiling the sabzi and finally turns off the gas... I'm amazed how beautiful this was and why i hadn't watched it before 💞 more love to you shefali mam 💞💞💞
No matter how many times I watch it...the last scene makes me feel the same intensity, same pain...ahh
Can't argue with that

The patriarchy is soo deep rooted in the system is soo hard to even see. Its soo normalised that no one even sees what's wrong with it
You are absolutely right. Some men don’t even realize this is wrong, and we women have to bear the brunt of their callous attitude
U r absolutely right.i hate this gender difference system.
When I was a child my mother used to say that she hate gatherings and festivals and a young me could not understand why so but now when I have to do the same chores like her. Now I can understand
I absolutely loved this. I watched this so many times already, and I can’t get enough. I love how raw the movie is, how it’s so realistic and so eye opening while being so subtle. To everyone saying ‘oh women why don’t you fight back, stand up for what you want yadayayda’ to them id like to say we’re trying. For a woman to stand up for herself is not an easy deed, it takes courage and an acceptance of the fact that she will judged and disregarded. As a woman, growing up you accept your fate when you see your mother and the way she is treated and even The small things add up, even if it’s a woman serving food to a man. We start accepting that it’s our fate. So to come out of it takes courage which is easier said than done.
Completely relatable. Ending left me teary eyed. Hope the concerned people realise what the makers of this beautiful short movie have depicted.
Just goosebumps as the woman sat on the chair with the juice in her hand staring at the men in disappointment...
Amazing short film. I remember my mother working in kitchen and guests enjoying in living room relishing the delicious food. And when I went to help my mother in kitchen my dadi use to come and shout at my mother saying are you trying to make your son a Chef boys should not enter the kitchen.
But thanks to you Aai for teaching me the art of cooking. Because today you are not with me but your upbringing has helped me to be a good human and an amazing chef😘.
Thanks for making this film I saw my mother in this short film.
God bless you.
Bro I feel sad for your loss but I loved your comment! I am glad that you became the man you are now and learned from your mom
This short movie has depicted the perfect example of class antagonism for equality. They are as follows:-
a) The women class is struggling against the men .
b) The lower class (represented by the maid) is struggling against the higher class (represented by these home makers) by not giving the tea in a same cup and
c) The plantation of distinction of struggle and conflict between male and female at their very young growing age by the children.
But the harsh reality is only some can able to make a change (like this woman) and others won't as they don't know about it (like the Small girl) and other who knows but cannot do anything (like the maid).
Beautifully explained and highly commendable.
Respect
Well said
Well detailed
And male smoking and drinking considered as normal
Damnnnnnnnnn. The TEARS in her eyes in the end...... am speechless........... Man ya'll need to respect your MOTHER, WIFE, DAUGHTER, SISTER. WOMEN in general. Not just the one's who are in your family but outside as well. Cooking is no JOKE. I know it's not just about cooking, it's about self respect and self worth and how they are disrespecting women in front of WOMEN. It's about respecting WOMEN. It's about respecting one an other.
Very well said.
Yes it is about that. However, it’s about equality and not just “respect.” True respect would mean men would share half the load in every aspect: chores, raising children and wouldn’t think they own their daughters or wives. This is the only way to ensure women get true independence and respect in society: when they don’t have to answer to their husbands and their partners know it’s 50/50; and when daughters aren’t treated different from sons. Men aren’t gods gift to humans. We need to instill that in ourselves and our children.
Disrespecting women in front of women...no words yaar.. don't know what to say
great lines...evn the lines of Era
The point of this short film wasn't only about respect. It was about men doing their share of work around the house.
The last scene alone where Shefali sits in front of the air condition with the expression on her face speaks a million words without a single dialogue is so bloody amazing it has left me speechless! WHAT A BRILLIANT ACTRESS!! truly a treasure of Indian cinema. Filmfare well deserved
Rahul vinal Narayan thats cooler
Yeah that was cooler
I watched this film a long time ago and today watched it again. It felt like I was watching the film afresh. The last scene was wordless but strong in its message. I am surprised that the message has been fed away that is why I had a feel that I am watching it afresh. Or maybe there is a psyche of taking many-many things for granted.
Tell the name of the film
What a clear depiction of our middle class society! Looks so progressive on the outside but what happens inside is overlooked knowingly by everyone. I think everyone should be made to watch this movie, even if it has to be forced. 👏👏👏👌👌👌👌

@@Sameeksha2136 But girls should only clean , cook and spread her legs that's what I believe....tell me If I am wrong 🤨!!
I think JUICE in the film is an antithesis to everything around. it is an antithesis to the dryness around, the dryness in the chicken served, the chicken in the kadhayi which got stuck, the hot and roasted baingan which she was struggling to peel, the spicy ghughni demanded, the humidity and compactness in the set up and especially the juice that had gone from her life and which she was in dire need of. When in the hall, the juice was an antithesis to the alcoholic drinks with men. And the entire sequence of her gulping down the juice (with a sound and an expression of relief) in front of men with their empty and half empty glasses of drink and the half eaten chicken pieces (very masculine set up), was an act of reinforcing her existence, an act of breaking the compactness in the woman's life and a rebel against the men and their fairy land world of "Trump trumped Hillary" and irrelevant topics of interest (which is already obvious).

One of the most powerful feminist films because it neither shouts its idea loudly nor character cried out feminist dialogues in melodrama , just delivered it subtly in minimalistic way , which is hardly seen in films dealing with social issues , Neeraj Ghaywan you are master of this!!
Just asking. Why are you against feminist shout their ideas loudly or asserting feminist dialogues?
@@JObhihosoho personally I don't like any social issues films to be loud and filled with heavy dialogues, it becomes preachy, anubhav Sinha movies, I like it subtle feels more powerful way of visual storytelling, there is an hour discussion I can have on usage of dialogue in cinema , but this valids my opinion ig :)
@@JObhihosohoJust imagine Manju lecturing everyone at the end. It would feel forced. Also she hadnot said anything to other women who werenot helping. It would be hypocrite to say just to men. This has become such a common sight for almost all Indians... what hurt me the most was the way that pregnant lady gave a bad and old cup instead of a nice one like the others and how that little girl was told to serve food to the other boys... The true slap in the face was in the end when a fed-up Manju took a glass of juice and sat in front of the cooler and how the other ladies just watched in awe

As a mother of 5 kids, all I can say gender equality starts from home. Kids love doing stuff and little responsibility let them enjoy and learn.
My mom's (and her friends-generation) faced this in a well educated upper middle class home. I am in my 30s now. No girl that I know will probably have to go through this. Although I was a a teenage boy then, I remember protesting that my mom and others should not have to do all that they did, and I did what I could to stand by her. I didn't think about all this gender equality etc. Then. But two decades later I feel proud that I did what I did.

I have seen my dad always helping mom in household works and in the kitchen even when some guests come. He never asked my mom to leave job because of kids instead he helped her more. So he has always been my role model in that and that turned me the same man who helps his wife in every household work as it's our house and we are life partners. I feel pity for those people who think being a MAN means ruling woman and make her do all the household work and force her to leave her passion and career. Great video and acting.

This short powerfully and veraciously depicts the broken-conventional Indian household.
So much is said with eyes, without the use of words. I had heard that 'the eyes do the talking' on multiple occasions before but understood it's real meaning today.
The way in which we all discriminate against women since childhood, the different rules we apply, the type of chores we assign and expect them to do is the core point of concern, in my opinion and it should be worrying to everyone.
I believe in equality in all aspects and try my level-best to apply it in my life and in the way I handle my siblings.
My parents are wise, no doubt about that, but in some cases they lack clarity or can't relate to, so I try my best to explain to them in simple terms and sensitize them on various relevant topics. I bring a new perspective to the things they've been used to and they're like, "Yeah, I hadn't thought about it like that. True!"
We appreciate boys for washing their own plate(or even we appreciate them for picking it up) so why can't we appreciate women for keeping the whole house clean, taking care of kids, making food for everyone, handling relatives' dramas?
Because women are taken for granted to do this as part of their dna
Yes my mom nvr appreciate me just orders.. Bt say thank you beta to my brother.. Whenever he just picks the plate n put it to basin
Why can't boys handle relatives and take care of kids. Both should help
@@Banglar_rosogolla well its the opposite in my house I do everything and my sister just sits and barks orders at me.But I'm okay with it as she's young. But both men and women need to be self dependent.
That is where the problem is. Boys should not be appreciated for doing something as simple as that. The more we dramatise the household chores and how big a deal it is for a man/boy to do it, the harder it is going to be to break this mold of patriarchy in our society.
It's not a big deal if a boy or girl pick up their plates or even wash it after eating. It's your plate after all.
How I always comeback to see Shefali chayas expressions...I see her pain which my mom must have gone through so many times without mentioning till date, without able to define it.she must have felt guilty ,pain and sadness at the same time
.
It makes my life easier with dishwasher and a much more understanding husband.
Equality begins from home!!
And we need to understand this
Wonderful work of Art. Juice has a symbolic meaning - Act of Defiance, Attempt to break the shackles from household chores, Shows transition from being attentive to being defiant, Journey from - the raised temperature inside kitchen to cool wind of Cooler, Burned Curry (Sabjii) to Cool Juice, Gender bias, Male members discussing world politics yet showing ignorance to household things (Patriarchy). Towards the end catches male members' reaction from surprise, awkwardness & anger to abject realization....and so many things.....wonderful....

Another thing people missed here is how some people treat maids! 6:10 the other lady pulled out a broken glass for the maid! Why? How would we feel if in our work place boss drinking tea in a cup and given the employee a broken glass... Things we should think about!!
Yes. A lot of feminazis are out here hitting on men, that is okay but they should look also how they treat the other women.
Yes, that was a very subtle yet powerful bit. We should treat the didi like a human being. She works for you, but she is no slave and deserves as much dignity and respect as you would expect for urself.
👍🏽
This was a great observation, even women arent saints, if they treat the help with such prejudice. I loved the movie, it shows inequality to deep levels.
This is so true.
Best thing I ever came across. Describes the scene of Indian households to a 'T', growing up thankfully my mother did treat me and my brother equally but whenever we had gathering I would always be the one doing the hospitality and my mother would never ask my brother to do it, and often I noticed that my masi would be the last one to eat because she would be busy serving everyone.
Even the scene where one of the ladies gets her daughter to get her brother's plate, the portrayal of such normalization was perfect. Hat's off to the writer and Director 👏💐
I only wish the other ladies had also come and sat there with a glass of juice in their hands. The impact would have been manifold. Male Chauvinism, class/caste discrimination (the way the maid is given the steel glass) all covered in 13m without too much foo faa...
That would have been an even better ending
They were also chit chatting only.
Actually they never realised it the way she did.. They were in the same state of mind as their male counterparts, as far as discrimination was concerned.
Actually this was the perfect ending because those women represent the majority of women who just stay behind and allow the patriarchy to rule over them. Only very few would unfortunately dare to do what manju was able to do. This ending keeps it realistic without giving it that films feel of all of them did the same thing as well imo.
Yes that way the ending would have been even better
Very nicely done..
Every man must have to understand this pain.....
I support this..

Not only man but women too.. in this movie they have shown, ladies they understand the emotions but ignore what she is going through & don't support...that's what is real life scenario.. I am a witness & have experienced it.. so sad😒
True and its a reality
For all the people who have commented that they do not relate to the video, that their fathers (or other men) in their families cook because their mothers cannot cook properly, so it made them wonder. Here is a piece of truth for you, your family is not the only family in the world so at least try to broaden your perspective that not all households are the same. There are plenty of households where gender roles are skewed and atrociously stereotyped as shown in the video. It excellent that your family has inculcated good values in you by being good examples themselves but if you are seeking appraisal for treating other humans as humans, this is no place for you. This in no way makes you or your family superior in any way. This is not a competition of how good you have it than other people. We are out of awards for you.
Another thing, it is not just about wives having a specific gender role and being overworked while men are having fun drinking and smoking away. The video clearly shows that how THESE men are uncomfortable by a woman in a position of (what they consider) power, the scene where one of the men is complaining that the appointment of their new "female" boss is not correct because women are physically ill-equipped. The video is not just a wife-husband relationship dynamic, it is about the woman-man relationship dynamic as a whole. At least attempt to comprehend it.
Finally someone said the right words. It is not a feat or a rewarding act to treat each other equally it's how it's supposed to be
Are you on Twitter?
Exactly! N even that small girl is also forced to help her mother n boys r nt expected to help
Very well said. But the tragidy is mejority people will not be so sensitive.
Those who treat their wives well.. Kinda boost about it. So..it simply reflects that he doesn't believe that he has to treat her well.. Just because that's how it is supposed to be. He is treating her well not because it's her right tm.. But because he wants to be a good husband. So kinda.. If someone is looking for credit for simply doing what he is supposed to do.. It's annoying.
And in our society bcz most men ill treat their wives.. Those few who treat them well. Kidna take pride in how good THEY ARE.
So we still need a deep understanding.
There are men.. Who say.. I have given all freedom to my wife. You know I told my wife it's her decision if she want to work or not.
Again.. When someone says I HAVE GIVEN HER FREEDOM.. it immediately contradicts what he says. Who is he to GIVE Her freedom. If he thinks he CAN give FREEDOM to his wife.. It implies.. He still is the one in control.
Of he tells she can decide about her job.. It still impose.. He still is the Incharge.
