  • FREE TO PLAY is a feature-length documentary that follows three professional gamers from around the world as they compete for a million dollar prize in the first Dota 2 International Tournament. In recent years, E Sports has surged in popularity to become one of the most widely-practiced forms of competitive sport today. A million dollar tournament changed the landscape of the gaming world and for those elite players at the top of their craft, nothing would ever be the same again. Produced by Valve, the film documents the challenges and sacrifices required of players to compete at the highest level.

    To people comparing these people to athletes/sportsmen:
    -Gamers with health problems? Please, what about all the stories of sportsmen getting into drugs, things that literally make you go insane, things that are ILLEGAL. Getting obese is one thing, taking drugs is something very difficult to recover from.
    -Sports teams are up against other small sports teams; there are only a handful of teams they have to play against to win. There are 3 teams in this competition - they've been up against the entire WORLD of Dota 2 players to get to this point and there's a huge amount of them.
    -Money? This is $1 Million.
    -Nerdy? Geeky? People, this is 2014. More people own a gaming platform than a football. That's the reality - it's mainstream now. Get used to it. It WILL become a national sport, whether you like it or not. It's only going to get bigger from here-on-out.

      Let them ramble on. I personally think, and I'm serious, that gaming will be the biggest thing out there in about 10-20 years. Our generation will be the full grown adults of today. We grew up with this. In 20 years there won't be a mindset of "gaming is the devil" that certain adults have in this day and age.

      I would also point out that most pro gamers are actually pretty fit. Because you cant become the best strategist without a fit and healthy body, the body of a gamer is like the bat of a baseball player, you cant be the best at baseball with a glass bat.

    This is not a documentary stating how gaming is great or be on par as other other pro sports. comparing pro gaming to sports is like comparing a cruise liner to a jumbo size jet, it will get you to places, but you are comparing two different things. This is about life as a pro gamer, the sacrifices people had to make in order to try to become the best in the world and hopefully, helps propel us into the next generation of competitive gaming. as basketball and football (soccer) first started, people wondered who would watch this? This documentary will maybe explain it, maybe just a little what the people in the gaming community are trying to one day hope to achieve.

    • @rayjfang

      Original DotA surfaced circa 2003. Team Fortress Classic in the before times of 1999. And the best is this quote from Wiki:
      "Multiplayer Quake was one of the first games singled out as a form of electronic sport.A notable participant was Dennis Fong who won John Carmack's Ferrari 328 at the Microsoft-sponsored Red Annihilation tournament in 1997."
      So, yeah, 1997 is a time which will forever remain shrouded in mystery.

    That feeling as a gamer. Glad I started playing Dota 9 years ago and watched/observed/played it as it progressed over the years. I stopped playing few years back but I still play once in a while. Then Dota 2 came out and it made me even more happier and started playing a lot again. I never regret playing dota and will continue playing because I enjoy it. It kinda sad though because people misunderstand us most of the time, oh wait, I mean all the time. Will definitely watch this. Nice one Valve.

      Hehehehe, yes we should just let the internet make people devolve their spelling and grammar. Which will be great for future generations. At this rate were going to have a generation of kids that will do 80 to 90 % of all their writing on the internet. And you propose I stop correcting people. In 20 years time, people of my age will be illiterate dumb fucks that have no idea about spelling or grammar. Is that really what you think is the right thing for future generations ?
      Just because it's on the internet does not mean we should stop paying attention to proper spelling and grammar. It's people like you that will be the downfall in education for the kids of tomorrow.
      So, if I feel I need to correct someone their spelling. I will do so as I see fit.

      Kao Javier Not to mention the top pro gamers probably have more hours of practice in their game than most athletes do in their sports. (8+ hours a day gaming is common for them, 8+ hours a day of practicing most sports is practically impossible)

    • @jollyvoqar195
      @jollyvoqar195 10 років тому +31

      Why not, playing games takes skill, and those who are best at it have a great deal more skill than the average player, put in a ton of practice, leverage every advantage.
      Perhaps it's more mental than physical but it still is. So there should be no chess tournaments or spelling bees or any kind of competition unless it involves athletics? Pfft to that.
      I'm not into it and find it a bit silly but there's no doubt that there's plenty of competition and an audience for it.

    • @jerrythebaum4388

      But games like DotA requires a lot more brain power than say the Olympics. If anything it's another form of competitive chess.

    To all the younger gamers saying competitive gaming has expanded and that is what they mean by competitive gaming not exiting 10 years ago no actually the opposite is happening, competitive gaming is getting smaller. When Fighting games started having trouble getting 3d right and sales of them started doing bad with that failure they took away a very large chunk of fighting game tourneys with them. When call of duty blew up it took out the fps gaming mlg scene with it. When madden got boring finally partly do to mainstream gamers moving to C.O.D from it there went the sports gaming tourneys. Free to play games and the only 2 really dominating competitive gaming being M.O.B.A games and W.O.T. makeup a really small percent of gaming. Madden Tournaments and Halo M.L.G. got huge mainstream attention even T.V. attention. I can go on the street and ask some one what M.L.G is and get a answer I can not do the same for Esports

    • @alsimons1837
      @alsimons1837 10 років тому +5

      I would argue that its only expanding, the problem with competitive fighting games is the companys behind these platforms (console manufacturers) never supported esports such as a long term effort whereas you have companys like intel,amd,nvidia, and a few others that continue to push and support the various scenes within pc gaming.I would also say that there is a huge difference between the communities...super smash tournaments on n64 is going to have a very small following compared to certain moba communities like dota2,starcraft or lol because both moba and rts games are being actively supported,both valve and riot are actively generating content and working on their product and because of those reasons..both are just as relevant as they were a few years ago.

    I get that im asking a lot but I want to test it to see how far gaming has come since 2010.
