    Fantastic review! As a woman, I like the 2.5 lb increment of the bowflex…but not enough to overcome the length , “rattle-iness” or non-flat ends. You really helped me decide on the Core Fitness set…thank you!

    First day impressions:It arrived in a waist high box. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxP26Tir6n60vUkdtn4mbwhRO8cwuJQNy2 Each dumbbell was in its own foam box within the shipping box. Everything was secure and in good shape. No weird smells. The weight changing mechanism is really smooth and straight forward. Changing weight is really fast and easy. Though the handle is plastic, I don't think it will be breaking anytime soon. So far pretty impressed after my first session with them. I was afraid they were going to be too wide at first, but I didn't have any issues with them while doing upright rows.

      Bro I know lol! Sounds like Amazon will start allowing non essential items back in there warehouses on April 5th so if people are quick they can snatch some up. Like you said may have to pay a little more because of demand, but hopefully some companies don’t do to much price gouging

      Over $1000 for the Bowflex on Amazon/Ebay (Just before the pandemic you could pick them up for about $200). Bowflex customer service rep says no idea when they'll be back in stock. Core Home also sold out on their website. Will have some in stock soon - supposedly.

      Yeah I just checked on Amazon and a few of these are listed at over $1400. On Ebay one of these dumbbells goes for around $400 to $500 plus depending on bidding. It's crazy, never in my life have I seen gym equipment sold out everywhere and being price gouged. I lucked out and was able to order the MX55 brand adjustable dumbbells at a local fitness store (half of the pre-orders were already reserved when I contacted them). Hopefully they will work as good as these Bowflex.

    Thanks, Matt. I've been looking at a million different sources to try to figure out what the best adjustable dumbbell set is, and this certainly sold me on the Core over the Bowflex. Not that Bowflex looked bad, just that Core looked better. I really appreciated your "to-the-point" and hands on comparisons, too. I think you hit all the major points I was interested in, and I hadn't even thought about the feeling of how they'd rest on your leg. Good thinkin' on that one. So this review is much appreciated. Thanks again!

      Do you know of any dumbbells that are the most similar to the previously mentioned but with 2.5 lb increments? Not necessarily up to 50 lbs per dumbbell but like up to 25 lbs?

      I have a pair of ‘’ Core Home ‘’ weights and 5 lbs. is also to big a difference. So I also bought pairs of 1 lbs., 2 lbs., and 3 lbs. wrist weights with holes for your thumb. 1 lbs. + 3 lbs. = 4 lbs. I can now go from 0 lbs. to 54 lbs. in 1 lbs. increments. Problem solved. It sure beats 2.5 lbs. increments. : > )

    One thing I like about the bowflex is they allow you to put more weight to the outside or inside of the grip. Allows for different target points.

    • @MattTolbers
      @MattTolbers  4 роки тому

      Hmm.. you mean as you select different weight it naturally selects different weight plates on the handle and that somehow is helping your lift? Because I don’t think you can pick which plate it hooks up, it has specific plates it grabs at certain weights

    • @Bob-Campbell
      @Bob-Campbell 4 роки тому +1

      What I mean is you can select say 40 on your thumb side and 30 on the other and it creates an outside bias for curls.

    Wow. The Core Home Fitness design looks great. I didn't realize some adjustable dumbbells had varying lengths depending on the weight selected. The 552 seem way too unwieldy.

  • @stevenzak199
    @stevenzak199 4 роки тому +1

    I agree with you that the flat ends of the Core would be better than the sort of pointy ends of the Bowflex when doing any bench presses. One thing worth mentioning about the Bowflex, though, is that you can adjust one end while leaving the other alone. That would actually allow you to get 2.5 pound increments in the higher (over 25-lb) ranges (or 1.25-lb in the sub-25-lb range): you'd make one end heavier by one notch while leaving the other end alone, and maybe shift your hand position toward the heavier side. It won't feel unbalanced because the difference is slight.

    • @MattTolbers
      @MattTolbers  4 роки тому

      I personally have not tried that Steven, but I do see what you're saying and it's possible that would work. But like tgmforum said it spaces the weight out at weird places depending on what weight you select, so it may want to lean more than you think and make it very awkward to use. I'm sure if it was meant to do that they would have said so in the design. When I get a hold of a pair again I'll try it.

  • @peterschmidt1453
    @peterschmidt1453 4 роки тому +2

    I've had the bow flex type for a few years and they were worth buying, but they are "delicate", these are not the weights to squeeze out that last rep and drop them to the floor, they will definitely break. They are very practical for arm curls and warm up for dumb bell chest / shoulder press, but then I use standard plate dumbells for the heavier sets. If you go heavy and need to drop a weight then use regular dumb bells.

    These for the lower weight exercises like curls and lateral raises. Actual dumbbells for the heavier. That seems like the ideal combo for a home gym setup. But just as soon as things return to some what normal, Imma sell those and get a pair of these.

    Excellent review. I was torn by the choice as Prime Day has the Bowflex discounted by 40%. Nevertheless, SEEING the two options in action made this a no brainer for me. The Core is more solid (no looseness between the plates) and its length changes by the amount of weight you lift. I can see where doing curls you would have to be careful not to have the large Bowflex dumbells bump into one another. Unless you need 2.5lb increments (Bowflex) vs. 5lb. increments (Core) the choice to go with the Core is easy.

    Nice comparison. The core dumbbells seem so much better. I have a lot of the hex solid dumbbells and they are great, but they take up a ton of room. I like the idea of having the core dumbbells to replace my hex dumbbells that I have in 20,25,30,35,40,45,50. That's a lot of space and weight I could save. Then just use the hex dumbbells for anything over 50lbs.

    • @MattTolbers
      @MattTolbers  4 роки тому +2

      The core are definitely better unless you want the 2.5lb increments up to 25lbs. For me the core had to many positives over the bowflex. And It would definitely save space for something else you want in your gym.

The ironmaster had a quick lock pin which could be over tightened or under and it could instantly come lose and dump all the plates. At least that’s how mine was. Good review. With a couple additions for me. The Core dumbbells are over 2x the price of the Bowflex. That's a very significant difference. I have the Bowflex and I got them for $279, but if they were the same price I'd probably get the Core because I do like the mechanism to change weight and the size of the dumbbell only gets bigger as you go up in weight. Also on the bowflex, you can put the dials at different weights. Why, I don't know, but you can.

    I don’t like either of them because I think they are too bulky, especially the Bowflex ones. I do not recommend either one to perform lateral raises or curls, but for flyes or dumbbell presses, I think the ones on the left can be used, but still prefer to use Iron Grip.

    Nice review. I've got the Core Home Fitness and think they're great. I liked how you mentioned the 2.5# increments on the Bowflex. There have been a couple exercises that I've done at low weight where a 2.5# increment would have been nice but it's not a deal breaker. As you suggested, if the wife or girlfriend wants to use 7.5# or 12.5#, a pair of those could be purchased for pretty cheap and wouldn't take up much room.

    At this time of writing, Core is selling for $564. I ended up getting the Bowflex 552 yesterday - price was the selling point. My local Academy Sports store has not price gouge lifting equipment. I figured I can use the Bowflex while I start building up strength, and I will mostly use these for isolation exercises. But yeah, I had the same trail of thought for the Bowflex as you: 1) I'm not gonna be using the 2.5 increments, but the wife will, and 2) these things are bulky (for curls?) - I gave them a quick curl test and I think I will only do hammer curls with these things (I guess preacher curls too). I am doing some delts work with my Bowflex tomorrow, will follow up if I end up hating them lol.

      @@hbkromeo Hey Joe, they come with the cradle you need to be able to spin the handle and change the weight. Can't change the weight unless you rest it on that. As far as the stand, it bolts directly to the stand. You don't need the stand, just makes it more convenient to use the dumbbells.

  • @Kevinhillcrest

    I use the core home fitness dumbbells and you save like $100+ if you don’t get the stand. I prefer them without the stand in my apartment because it saves a lot of space and I can put them nearly anywhere rather than having a huge rack of regular dumbbells going from 5-50 lbs.
    50 lbs. feels much heavier with adjustable dumbbells because they have a slight rattle causing you to have to work harder to stabilize and move them so 50 lbs. feels more like 60 lbs.
    They are not cheap, but I’m so glad I got the Core Home Fitness for quick pumps before going out and they really came in handy during this Coronavirus Pandemic. 👍

    I have the 552s and the 1090 (10-90 lbs.) pairs. I've had both the 552 and 1090 for over 15 years. They are very sturdy, and completely reliable. They are less intuitive than the Core home fitness DBs, but they make up for that in flexibility. I like the cambered handle on the bowflex models but it's probably just because I'm used to them. As noted in the video, structurally you can go up in 2.5 lbs increments until you get to 25 lbs. This is great for long level exercises like lateral raises. And since the weight is selected individually, you can offset the plates to continue the 2.5 lbs increment (say by setting one side at 25 lbs and the other at 30 lbs) which the Core home fitness DBs can't do as it is a one-adjustment system. The stand for the Bowflex DBs is sold separate for about $170 but you can get that from Walmart.Lastly, the Home Core Fitness DBs are way more expensive. You could get the 552 and 1090 pairs, plus stands for both and still pay less than you would for the Home Core Fitness DBs. I you take care of the Bowflex DBs you'll have them for a long time (like I said mine are at least 15 years old).

    • @MattTolbers
      @MattTolbers  4 роки тому

      Wow you must be taking really good care of them to have them that long! The Core Home Fitness Dumbbells are actually about the same price as just the 552 or even a little cheaper usually. You are just seeing the current price which is super high because of supply and demand ever since the gyms closed people all started building home gyms and bough out everything. Core Home and Bowflex are both way that way right now.

    • @ORF5519
      @ORF5519 4 роки тому +1

      @@MattTolbers I like the sturdiness and the look of the Core Home DBs. You don't have to baby the Bowflex's but you can't be reckless with them either. And with the price point as you say, the only advantage for the Bowflex is the fractional weight change capability. And truth be told you could mitigate that by buying a couple sets of Micro Gains DB fractional weight plates (2 ea .5,1.0, 1.25lbs) sold on Amazon that clip around the DB handles.That would optimize the Core Home DBs. They're not cheap but well worth it. I'm a way from home a lot so I have a set that I travel with and they've worked on every set of DB's I've encountered.

    Watched this after your other video and I had already decided on the Core Home, but this reinforced my decision. Although the smaller increments is an advantage of the Bowflex, for me, the smaller overall profiles on the Core Home outweighs the smaller weight increments. I have another product by Fierdun where you put plates on and screw closed, and the motion of clunking the weights into each other because the dumbbells are 17" each all the time is really frustrating for me. Thanks for this review!

    • @MattTolbers
      @MattTolbers  3 роки тому

      Hey Charles, the MX55 are decent but not personally a fan for a few reasons. They got a weird curved angle to them, not flat like the core. You have to press 4 buttons in to release the turn dials and then turn all 4 individually to the correct number and look at a graph to know what weight that is. They are a little thinner because of the steel, but the convenience of the core is so much better there's not comparison in my opinion. Convenient and quick use is huge for me.

    Thanks for the comparison review! I did get the core fitness DB but then found out lots of negative reviews on Amazon about its durability and the safety concern, also don't you feel the plates can be a little shaky rather than like dead steady? I do lots of bench push so worry about whether the plastic pole (yes it's plastic) in the middle could snap and plates might fall.

    • @MattTolbers
      @MattTolbers  3 роки тому +8

      No problem Liang! I don't find them to be very shaky at all, compared to a lot of similar adjustable dumbbells they actually don't shake much at all, but of course not as solid as a real dumbbell. These are rated 4.5 stars on amazon which is really good. There will always be some bad reviews whether it's from something being damaged during shipping, happen to get a bad batch or someone using something incorrectly which causes pre ware or damage. A lot of these newer ratings will be people coming from always lifting in a commercial gym use to being ruff with dumbbells, to now having adjustable dumbbells that are not meant to be dropped or slammed back onto stand. I don't have any safety concerns. The plates are not only held up and together by the bar in the middle they also grove together so both would have to break at once for it to fall. If you want an adjustable dumbbell that's going to last forever and you can be pretty ruff with the Core Home fitness dumbbells are not the right fit. Almost all adjustable dumbbells are not meant to be dropped or ruff with and the few that are you will sacrifice the speed of weight change and similarity to a real dumbbell. The Core in conjunction with real dumbbells for heavier weights is a great setup since most people tent to drop heavier weight after a set in which you could do where as 50lbs and less most people can control and place back on the rack less harshly. The Nuobell have a chance to be the better overall adjustable dumbbell for most people in my opinion but have some issues that need to be addressed and fixed first. The plastic grove that the plates slide into are much smaller than the cores, which make it harder to put the dumbbell back onto the tray without damaging it or getting the plates jammed. Especially going up to 80lbs it will be harder to set down gently like the Core. Also a general truth is people tend to drop heavier dumbbells after a set than they do lighter dumbbells which would result in the Nuobells breaking easier. This is why I like the Core for space saving, super quick weight change and real dumbbells you can be ruff with for the heavier lifts. And if you don't have much space get the Core plus Ironmaster or something similar for the heavier lifts since core are much easier to change for the lighter lifts.

      Yes you’ll save money getting ativafit over getting core plus real dumbbells.
