I just caught this ... Man, I've been trying triplets and crossovers for 40 years and I'm only JUST beginning to understand how they work. 61 now and still doing my best!! (Not a musician BTW). I liked your respectful silence - comment capyures were great. I wish more reactors would use them!

The greatest drummer of all time, the DRUM GOD John (Bonzo) Bonham, he played this solo over 200 times. His band mates knew he was the greatest drummer ever, & knew they couldn’t replace him.

The drum solo continued to be part of their live set up to 1977 by which time it had extended to almost 30 minutes and was called “ Over The Top”. Legend has it that the break enabled one or two of the band to obtain exotic refreshment off stage before returning at the climax. By this time Bonham was taking cocaine even during the solo and suffered anxiety depression and alcoholism. He was still a great drummer as can be seen on the video from Knebworth in 1979, particularly in “ Kashmir”.

He was developing a real hatred for the touring life as well, so I suspect some of the substance abuse was triggered by that as well.

Before Knebworth, they hadn’t preformed for about 2 years, after Plant’s sons passing. They were practicing for their upcoming US tour, Bonham didn’t want to leave his family, & why he drank so much that day. Sadly causing him to leave his family forever.

Bonham = Greatest Rock drummer of all time. He was the glue to the greatness of Zeppelin. There are some videos outlining Bonham's crazy techniques / skills... ie. carrying one time signature with one drum (such as bass) while simultaneously playing a different signature with for instance snare and high hat. just insanely skilled

Bonham was simply the best. So glad you included this live version of "Moby Dick", thanks! Edit: Did I hear you say "the rest of this concert"? If so, very cool. Well worth watching the entire concert so would enjoy hearing your reactions to all of it. :)

So much to unpack with Bonham the drummer....this is one my fave recorded MD solos of his (he's 21 here) my absolute fave is off "HTWWW" from the CD...you get an initial nod to Max Roach in this, and then incorporating the triplet stuff he obviously picked up from Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge then Cactus), plus the hand drumming probably inspired from Joe Morello (Dave Brubeck), and some conga interplay as well...what I luv about his playing is the power w/ finesse and that wonderful almost jazzy, soulful feel that comes across even in the heavy moments, and an innate sense of phrasing & drama that really no other rock drummer has matched - except perhaps Keith Moon in a different, almost Tasmanian Devil way (check out YMB from Tanglewood '70)...both the greatest rock drummers of all time imo...looking forward to your comments on the rest of LZ III (then IV & V?)...(The Muppets "Animal" was probably based on Keith Moon, but maybe the combo of both M&B)

According to the coroner's report, Bonham had consumed 40 shots of vodka in a 12-hour period and aspirated on his vomit overnight while staying at Jimmy's house during rehearsals for their upcoming US tour and was found by Jonesy. According to the Muppet Wiki Fandom, Animal the Muppet drummer wasn't based on any one specific person. He was designed by originator Jim Henson and the early sketches do not appear to favor a specific person, but of course, people can speculate :)

Moby Dick began life as drum jam parts that were originally named "Pat's Delight" (John Bonham's wife) Jimmy page decided to book end it with the guitar theme and it was renamed as Moby Dick, giving John the drums feature in performances. The rest of the band went off for a break behind the scenes and let Bonzo shine.

Bonham’s son Jason called it, dad’s Moby Dick song, I’d say meaning his huge song. That was the story I heard about it being called Moby Dick.

What did the drummer name his two daughters?
    Anna one, Anna two.
Sorry I really had to get that joke out of my system, apologies.
That was a bit of an arm workout wasn’t it Dev? Could you squeeze that into your CrossFit workout?
Such a shame YT restricts showing The Royal Albert Hall performance. For a ‘newbie’ like me that has never seen it before it would be quite the experience. I’m pleased they allowed this to be shown. I just wanted to applaud the guy after that effort. Still not one of my favourite songs by Led Zeppelin but could appreciate the genius of the band.
Another superb chapter of Led Zeppelin guys, thank you for opening my eyes.

Back in the day, there really was no such term as designated driver. Bonham died in bed anyway, I believe choked on his own vomit, after something like 30 shots of booze, along with many a pint. And I think it was at Jimmy's house. John Paul Jones found him the next morning, so the story goes.

I think you two were on to something -- just hadn't quite sorted it out:
Plant is Melvile (the off-screen story teller)
Page is Ishmael (the narrator via his guitar)
Jones is Ahab (the 'partner' of Moby Dick in this tale)
Bonham is Moby Dick (the beast)

Don't forget I'm from Belgium. We've fought off Julius Caesar 2000 years ago. We've boo'd off Napoleon, scared away the Germans in 1918 and again in 1945. And now you're coming with this? See how we tremble. See us shaking. Let the cannons come, we're ready. Germans, French, Dutch (laughable) or Saxons, we're here. Belgians. Not to be laughed at. Or maybe, a bit. Not too loud though.
