A fun fact about Vampire Weekend's album cover: it was inspired by the "Only God Was Above Us" series by photographer Steven Siegel. The artist says: "Only God Was Above Us" features cover art based on photos taken by me decades ago in a scrap yard that contained dozens of abandoned New York subway cars. I am honored that this leading rock band has chosen to include my photos as part of their latest release.
big vampire weekend head here: arguably only god was above us is vampire weekend's best album, by far the most sonically mature for lack of a better term. i highly recommend, i think elliot especially may enjoy it given his general musical tastes. also notable, they did not "design" this album cover. it's actually a steven siegel photo called "Subway Nightmare 11" and existed before the band chose to use it. it's part of a series of photos by siegel taken in these abandoned subway cars in NYC. the camera is rotated and the man in the seat is actually laying on his back which is probably what was causing the weird disconnect kel was seeing. the guy in the background is the one who is actually oriented towards gravity. my favorite fun fact about that photo in particular is that's a real headline from the daily news which the band named the album off of rather than text that was added later. so i'll go to bat for this album cover, it works really well with both the themes of the album and the vibes of the band. their merch for this album has sucked so bad though so i'll give you that they used a lot of the photos from siegel's subway series in their album promotion but siegel is a very talented photographer known for his work documenting life in NYC and it's worth checking out his work just on its own merit
The Gracie Abrams cover is fine, but I just don't like album covers that have the musicians front and center, but that's just me, I'm crazy like that. Merry Christmas kelliot, love you babys ❤
Fun episodeeee, but no one can ever convince me the Gracie Abrams cover is any good. I don't know, it just doesn't do anything for me. She looks gorgeous, the lettering is fun as fuck, but it's just a bit... uninspired, imo. Doesn't tell me anything about the music.
if you haven’t already recorded it, i’d love to hear your thoughts on: This Could Be Texas - English Teacher TANGK - IDLES Midas - Wunderhorse What Happened to the Beach - Declan McKenna !!!
Fun fact about ScHoolboy Q is that he includes his own handwriting in almost every one of his covers and visual identity, he even participated in making the text for Kendrick Lamar's good kid, maad city and tracklist for TBAB
I think what makes the hyperdrama album art seem unfinished is that the orange glow doesnt interact with the glass at all while everything else about it is almost hyper rendered
it's funny i think y'all got me to understand the Secret of Us cover with this episode LOL, i hadnt thought about gracie's branding as being incredibly refined but it finally clicked for me.. i get it now
I think Gracie Abrams’ branding is extremely trendy and won’t age well at all. It’s what you see all over Pinterest these days. Her designs don’t really give her an identity, it’s just the current Pinterest aesthetic, pushed towards the uglier side of nostalgic Y2K Photoshop. Kel’s stuff has always been trendy to me (or rather, since I watch her stuff, she sets the trend from my pov), like trying to manufacture things reminiscent of older days whether it’s the vintage aesthetic in her old videos or the Y2K aesthetic more recently. I just think it’s more difficult to create original designs than to make a caricature of an existing style.
hi, love y'all - great pod as always. devastated to not see imaginal disk on their list
