Two Aikido Masters get drunk in a bar, get in an argument over a mutual girlfriend. They agree to settle their differences outside ( to preserve the Bar from possible property damage). Once outside they circle each other, each waiting for the other to attack. Legend says they are still there today.
So a previous practitioner I can confirm that Aikido is even more effective when everybody is moving. The faster the movements, the greater the effectiveness.
Guys I've seen vids showing corrective Aiki teaching of what were originally master energy+structure mechanics but were mistaught by his sensei in lazy western lessons. I believe all martial arts work in their logics but we get stupid useless ppl. Bad teaching inadequate training and opportunist internet critiques should not disprove ingenuity of any science. I want to learn correct things that's why we need both scepticism and respect. This showed it works it seems. Some things do sometimes. Isn't that important? I'm so attracted to this but i need partners i can't have.

That’s because you don’t understand self-defense... Aikido is made to handle “pre-fight scenarios” like if someone grabs to threaten you or if someone pushes you (same reason it’s techniques are utilized by security guards and police officers around the world). It’s not made to fight against someone who jumps around in a fighting stance. Those idiots you can always run away from.
Yes, that is directed scenario... In real life this Aikido thing is almost ZERO appliance! Me with NO EXPERIENCE in competition fight but a few fights on street and kung-fu practitioner and power training have NO MATCH to be put down with an Aikido 1dan fellow that I often train(is even hilarious how he tries to apply his techniques and I EASY debunk them!) and I think even 2-3-4-5 dan using only this art moves!!!!
Me too. But I have the deepest respect for Aikido. It is good training for body and mind. I am a karateka myself (2 . Dan Kyokushin) but find Aikido very fascinating.
I kinda had hoped that you would display its effectiveness through a live situation, rather than you just talking about it. The other guys were being extremely generous to you.
They're just doing demonstrations. It wasn't about being generous. This is how you teach. Though the title didn't do the video with the obvious incoming comments any favors.
That's the nature of aikido. I don't respect any martial art where the instructor only does demos with compliant senior students and won't test his or her skill against a proper opponent. As a martial ART it's fantastic. As a means of self-defense it's worth less than nothing.
I love it when people from different styles talk shop! Never can get enough of it. I do the same thing. I take Tai Chi and Choy Li Fut, and I'm always talking shop with some MMA friends of mine.
@Jason Jones “Talk Shop” is an expression that means two people are talking about a particular skill that both of them are educated in. For example two accountants talking about handling and counting money would be talking shop.
Wait, there were no sparring? No really resisting opponent? The point of training MMA is to offer full resistance to an attack, not to give your arms and just wait for something to happen. Oh... Imagine the Gracie Challenges happening in a place like that.

@@mynomadicnotebook2510 agreed. And on that regard, imo it's a little strange seeing this video, aikido vs mma. The techniques shown were not mma techniques. Hey Raju does that mean we should all behave ourselves and quit martial arts because "everyone has a plan untill they get punched in the face?"Does that mean people can't freely discuss Martial Arts including boxing?
@@LightPresident95148 Oh, I was just quoting Mike Tyson for the metaphor. His quote more so places emphasis on the fact that when confronted with an actual crisis/self defense situation, people often forget a lot of their training and things go awry. That's why it is important to make sure a person incorporates training that is stress-based and as realistic as possible. To ensure that their body reacts appropriately to the situation and they apply that kick, punch, elbow, e.t.c. In Akido they often don't do much stress training or hands on sparring. .sorry, but your opponent is not going to stand there as you try to apply the perfect joint lock or throw. Now if you incorporate some akido into your daily sparring secession with an opponent that's trying to resist and strike back. .there's some decent stress training.
I love MMA, but the discipline and beauty of traditional Japanese martial arts are truly inspiring. Karate, Jujutsu, Aikido, and Judo are martial arts treasures which I hope will never be lost.
That’s basically the idea. A lot of martial arts have different techniques with that idea. Bending or twisting a limb to the breaking point where if they don’t go with the flow, it’s going to break. So they basically flip themselves to the ground, not really you being strong enough to just flip someone over with brute force. The idea is they just naturally go with the movement to relieve the pain and prevent a broken arm, wrist, etc. I believe Aikido does have some effective self defense techniques that can be used in your average self defense situation against some untrained dipshit who saw you as an easy target and decided to jump you and only knows how to throw random haymakers and trying to get you on the ground to get on top of you. That’s basically what it was created for. It’s obviously not the thing to use for all out brawls, or against very skilled offensive fighters/boxers. It’s a self defense system, not a brawling/fighting system.
In all martial arts and fighting teaches balance....having great balance is the key to being s great fighter...if you can knock your opponent off balance then you have the upper hand of beating him.

What I find interesting about Aikido is it's almost like a passive-aggressive martial art why you take a sort of passive defensive posture but when you execute the moves you are in a sense being aggressive I like the idea that it's not all kicking and punching but it seems to me that you have to be very patient and remain calm so you can execute the movements rather than give in to the natural urge to strike back.
The problem with aikido is that people don't let you grab their wrists in real fights. And disciplines like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and wrestling have their own wrist locks. Aikido is maybe 5% effective in a real fight. Do you want to spend a decade becoming a black belt in something that's 5% useful? I don't.
@@RictorIAG that does make a lot of sense. I think the problem is that the aikido techniques work but as I was saying one has to be very patient and wait for that opening or like you're talking about wait until they can get that that grab or connection to the other person's hand wrist or arm to execute a move and so it limits your potential reactions to your opponents attack.
@@RictorIAG The problem is this was used for self defense in samurai era, not for a fight. If people want to kidnap you, they'd definitely grab your hands instead of just fully punch you. Why they focus on grabing arms? It's to remind you that the enemies can use their katana anytime
@Peter Evans I started with kenpo too. its main problem were unrealistic training sequences with next to no sparring outside point sparring. Without training techniques against actual resistance, one will never be able to execute it under the stress of real attacks. I found kickboxing, mastering just the basics and constantly sparring to be much more efficient and effective to build true combat striking skill. Im not master of this art but when i was practicing our sensei appreciated and he teach us to punch with speed and force but with control, we have bit resistance when we take down to be more realistic. So most of our attack was executed with intent to hurt or kill but with control so to avoid fatal injury or death if ever the technique wasnt properly execute. And flip and rolling by the way is one important to learn to avoid injury. Aikido is not meant for sports its a way of life and live in harmony and use the art if really needed to defend yourself and your family.
"Evade today and live another day" It takes a lot of courage to beat someone up but it takes more not to fight for the welfare of you and your partner. I see a lot of negative comments about the effectiveness of Aikido. In my own, limited knowledge of the art, I can honestly say, that if done right, coupled with speed and precision, it will work on about 95% of the population. People that want to dismiss it, because there aren't any Aikido practitioners getting into the octagon with 250 pound monsters, that punch and kick things all day, are presenting a bit of a false argument. Most MMA fighters wouldn't get in a ring with Iron Mike Tyson in his prime, either, for the same reason. Fighting for a living, and defending yourself, are two very different things. My understanding of Aikido techniques is that they're great for weapon retention. If you're drawing a sword or dagger and someone grabs your wrist to wrestle the weapon out of your hand, you can use Aikido to break the grip without losing your weapon. This skillset is entirely irrelevant to MMA. And nobody's asking if MMA works for weapon retention, because MMA is irrelevant to that end. Traditional Japanese Jujutsu was nearly always trained as a supplementary art to Kenjutsu and other weapon arts and was, until the advent of Judo and Aikido, practiced in full armor. Aikido is an unarmored, relatively gentle version of basically any traditional Japanese martial arts curriculum, weapons and weapon retention included. That said, individual Aikido techniques (such as hip throws) may be useful skills for an MMA fighter, just as some BJJ techniques used in MMA may be useful for retaining a weapon. Context is king.
The founder of Aikido was a swordsmanship instructor in the Japanese Army. Most of the techniques are for retaining your sword and defeating your opponent when grabbed.
@@anthonyyoung6433 Exactly! And to my knowledge, it was also supposed to be equally applicable to rifle and bayonet. And weapon retention is very important to modern law enforcement. Perhaps that's why Japanese police often study Aikido?
I appreciate the way it's being demonstrated especially goes from slow to fast. It puts everything into perspective into what the style truly does against someone aggressive.
It is looking awesome! But what if the aggressor is not willing to grab your arms!? This instruction has shown nothing compared what Aikido really is! Aikido has the most dangerous strikes to kill the opponent and those are techniques only trusted to people who can handle it with very much responsibility!
The grabbing of the arm and the techniques being used to counter the grab are just examples of what can be done. People make the mistake that brute force, punches, kicks etc will win. Aikido is all about using the opponent’s momentum, body movements, physiology against themselves. I did karate for over 10 years and had the opportunity to ask an aikido master to counter my attacks. Truly amazing what a master can do...all with minimal effort.
Aikido is built around some sound concepts about exploiting the skeletal and directional weaknesses of an opponent, but the lack of randori (free sparring) leaves its practitioners at a disadvantage to martial arts that allow participants to test themselves against a resisting opponent. Aikido + Randori = Judo
You sound exactly like one of those dumb pro-Biden fools who cannot (refuses to) see the mountain of evidence because of a completely biased and impaired judgment. Have you ever tried, just for once, to attend an aikido class? I bet the answer is no because otherwise, you wouldn't say anything stupid like this. Act like a mature person, be a man once in your pathetic lifetime and go attend an aikido class just so at least, you know what you are talking about "from experience". THEN, and only then, will you have earned the right to have an opinion on a matter. I do have to say something against aikido thou... My first experience with this martial art, was in fact an aikiBUDO class. The more ancient form of the art, like aikikai, or aikijutsu (jiu-jiutsu comes from these arts BTW). In these classes, I learned the martial way of the art, like it was meant to be used. And then when I went in France, there wasn't aikibudo so I joined a couple of different aikido classes. And my god was I disapointed. They took the aikido philosophy way too far to the extreme of non violence. It was a fucking comedy. You'd slightly begin to apply the technique that your partner would thow himself in the air by himself... All in the name of not getting hurt or something. There were no way to test your techniques/skills and so many black belts were absolutely "fakes". They couldn't even get the rolling/falling techniques right! If you listened to the video, the MMA fighter said something which is key. "The more I resist, the more it hurts". If an aikido technique is well applied, that's exactly what happens. That is also why most if not all the techniques used in law enforcement corps comes from aikido. They are used to control opponents. Most MMA fans and critics of aiki are so stupid and un savvy that they dont even know that most jiujitsu techniques comes from (are the EXCAT same in fact) than aiki. So they are basically saying is that the same technique works, but it doesn't at the same time wether they think it comes fro jiujitsu or from aiki! In the end the lesson should be this: Aikido must be distiguished in two general forms. Ancient, and modern. Ancient form is meant to be brutal, decisive, terminal to dispatch your opponent quickly on a battlefield. Not suited at all for a show, like MMA because just think how you'd feel if you pay 1000$ to see a MMA program, and none of the 5 fights would last more than a minute each. Therew ould be no sports because there would be no fans. The modern form is not really martial anymore although some school of AIKIDO, will still practice and retained the aikiBUDO or aikiJITSU philosophy. The modern way of the aikido is more of a philosophy than an art anymore. So dont limit your judgment by a defective modern philosophy. Aikido's techniques are the same ones as aikibudo, only applied and practiced in a totally different way from which they were intended. The best example is look at an aikido demonstration, and then look at the old black and white videos of Seagal. You'd be a perfect idiot not to see the completely different approaches between the two. Seagal learned from an old man who thaught the old ways. And it shows. The second part of the lesson, and i scratched it already, is that you must use the best tool for the job. MMA is a SPORT. Its a show. There are rules, there is a point system to "win" a fight, and no "fighters" would be willing to put himself in a very dangerous position where one fight would probably be his last. Antd then there are martial arts, where the goal is to survive and kill your ennemies, swiftly. Which are not suited for a ring obviously. Wo wichi of the hammer or the screwdriver is the best? Al depends on what the task is. Same for MMA vs traditionnal martial art. One is great within a frame of parameters while the other will be great in a different set. But you cannot judge if you havent seriously tried first. That's something which applies in EVERYTHING in life.
Yup most techniques in traditional Aikido won't work on an MMA practitioner. That's why Koichi Tohei created his own evolved Aikido then others followed. As for me, small joint manipulations and a combination of atemi+circular defense can be a threat to anyone, even an MMA fighter. Of course, small joint manipulations are illegal in the ring :)
They work, you just have to apply it for YOUR needs and YOUR situation. For instance that last technique he showed. Uke in Aikido keep strong grips... which in return cause the joint to lock. But most people let go before it gets to that point. So in my school we used it as a way to break wrist grabs
@@4bangermafia well said. The problem I find with "martial artists"(and I use that term loosely for the mma fan bois)is that they have to compare every martial art to ufc fighting and ignore that fact. Edit: and I agree with angelo pointing out that fact that small joint manipulations are illegal in the ring. Since most MA know the rules in mma while the other keyboard warriors dont even bother to acknowledge it
This is a nice explaination of the Aikido technique. The sensei is very strong in terms of movement domination. But I would suggest to explain the fact that these techniques are for learning about efficient use of the body movements with the partner and in order to apply in a competitive fight, where the partner resists the fall it needs to be found an application of the movement, and also include atemi (striking to points of unbalancing). In aikido we study principles of movements that can be applied to a variety of situations, and more broadly in different life situations. It's purpose is general discipline of the body and mind which includes openness to learn. I would suggest any competitor of any sport studying Aikido to improve his performance, but never to think of it for a direct application. You need to do more than that, otherwise it would be very easy and oversimplified. And martial arts wazas shouldn't be put in conflict between them, they add always something to what you learn. That's the Budo path.
Aikido is an off-shoot of Daito Ryu Aiki-jujutsu, which was a samurai fighting system. The samurai used jujitsu while "wearing armor", and most samurai would "never" find themselves unarmed in combat, or even in everyday life. The samurai carried a katana with them everywhere they went. When they wore armor, they had their katana AND numerous other back-up weapons: knives, spears, bow & arrow, etc. to supplement their main katana if they lost one weapon in the heat of battle. Not to mention, that during most ambushes or invasions, it was extremely rare for a samurai to end up fighting "1-on-1" against a single attacker. So, essentially, a lot of time and energy was put into "unarmed combat training" (jujitsu) for samurai who were likely to never utilize these skills, given the nature of real combat. It's not that jujitsu was totally impractical, but rather that's its applications were extremely limited in Feudal Japan, where the samurai lived and worked.
@@milewesler9592 I think it’s a good martial art to learn fluid motion and have confidence in your body in concert with another. That sounded weird lol. Sigh. This is exactly what’s wrong with arts like Aikido - they train against compliant opponents in set patterns. There’s nothing functional on show here
You don't understand eastern martial arts at all. It is supposed to be practiced with a compliant partner. The key is to understand the natural patterns of the body and mind. Of course, aikido on its own would not fare well against an active forceful opponent. However, it is a way to train the unconscious mind to recognize balance in the moment. Tai Chi, Aikido, Kung Fu are not meant to be standalone forms. They are meant to supplement the practitioner to enter states of flow during any activity -- whether it's fighting or washing dishes. Please familiar yourself with the concept of Wu Wei -- effortless action -- which is critical to mastery of all art forms, including Jiu jitsu and Judo ("the gentle way")
Nonsense. All martial arts have some compliant drilling like you say - but it’s only arts like Aikido/Wing Chun etc.. that will post ‘Aikido vs..’ and then just show something compliant with no actual resistance. They always make a claim of effectiveness thats not proven with any evidence. What’s the point here in the MMA gym/fighter and the title of the video if it is not to claim some kind of Functionality?
@@danieltiller1421 The channels on UA-cam of Aikido/TaiChi/Kung Fu masters do not reflect the truth of these arts. It is only what you see -- the outward appearance. If you have been to China or Japan and visited the mountains, you would see their humbleness. Kung Fu means "any study, learning, or practice that requires patience, energy, and time to complete." It is not focused on combat. That is only the Western (UA-cam) interpretation which has distorted the definition. Jiu Jitsu is not only a system. It goes beyond taking down, passing guard, isolating limbs. The true definition of Jiu Jitsu is "The Gentle Technique". Jiu Jitsu, like Aikido, is the art of minimal effort to achieve maximum results. They are one and the same. We use Jiu Jitsu to control our opponents; we use it to control our dog. Btw the 2 guys obviously doen´t look like MMA fighters, who mainly fight from the distance using kicks an don´t grab to hands or fore-arms.
@Martial arts enthusiast Grabbing the wrists is basic aikido and how its taught to beginners, strikes, grabs, clothing grabs, choke escapes, weapons are taught to advanced students. I find it a good way to teach beginners.
Aikido was developed for people that already have experience in fighting based on what I found out. So it will work well if you already know MMA, not if you don't have that experience.
I think Aikido's wrist locks, some of the throws and mechanics will work in real life. It would be situations where people are at the shoving aggressive stage. Someone grabs a hold of you. You catch them in a moment when they are not prepared. Arguments fights don't immediately start at fists being thrown. You see elements of it taught in the combined art taiho jutsu used by Japanese police.
Exactly I did jujitsu similar to aikido and Brazilian jujitsu, I mean where do you think brazilian jujitsu came from. I see mma guys always downplay aikido and other arts cause in a cage they would win. If trained in the right context almost anything can work.
A pure practitioner of Aikido, if fighting in MMA, may not necessarily win, but MMA fighters who master Aikido techniques at any given moment will definitely be effective using the technique
You’ll get a great understanding of body mechanics, which will be useful. Other than that, you’ll need training in other disciplines to compete effectively.
yeah you right. I was thinking, why it was designed a martial art that require you need to get your opponent grabs you using all his force on your arm. I think maybe this was invented in the age when you have a sword or a knife and the other opponent tries to take it out. Thats the porpoise i guess why this was invented. But the body mechanic control is amazing. Now it need to be reinvented in other to reinforce some grappling techniques
My guess its too dangerous MMA is quite a gentle sport like boxing. Submissions are from basic techniques only. In Aikido techniques are devastating to the human body, especially when adrenalin is involved. But the truth is any technique can be adapted from any form of movement from ice skating to ballroom dancing. Strengths are acquired from unexpected places. E.g drunken style. kung fu.
@@alexandrealves2877 i just don't think mma guy will letting aikido guy to holding his hand. to me just like wingchun thats too gentle in the mma cage.
@@spheality Agreed, in this day and age you’d think someone would have caught these techniques working consistently on resisting opponents in real time but it’s always just a bunch of choreographed nonsense.

The only style that does this, is the Tomiki style of aikido which incorparates randori shiai similar to judo...

@@mynomadicnotebook2510 agreed. And on that regard, imo it's a little strange seeing this video, aikido vs mma. The techniques shown were not mma techniques. I mean, no fighter would try and grab the opponents' hands in the octagon. They would get punched and kicked before they could grab a hand.

Now if you incorporate some akido into your daily sparring secession with an opponent that's trying to resist and strike back. .there's some decent stress training.
so...aikido works on guys who don't resist, even when standing in an MMA gym. amazing !

Love this video. Been interested in aikido
what i learned from what i seen of aikido is
"Move with me..... *or this is going to hurt* "

I agree;a good martial artist or MMA fighters will take what he learn from all martial arts he know to incorporate into his skillset/game.
What I find interesting about Aikido is it's almost like a passive-aggressive martial art why you take a sort of passive defensive posture but when you execute the moves you are in a sense being aggressive I like the idea that it's not all kicking and punching but it seems to me that you have to be very patient and remain calm so you can execute the movements rather than give in to the natural urge to strike back.
slow drills lead to reflexive movements in actual combat
@@MasterK9Trainer I would love to get your opinion on this video. ua-cam.com/video/AHhz-T5N5sw/v-deo.html

@Peter Evans I started with kenpo too. its main problem were unrealistic training sequences with next to no sparring outside point sparring. Without training techniques against actual resistance, one will never be able to execute it under the stress of real attacks. Martial arts is about how you live your life ,I personally love fighting and violence but as I have gotten older I know I avoid more conflict and realize Road House rules are a great way to live ,lol Aikido is a great art that can relax body and mind and has great principles and concepts ,its up to me to make them work and the chances of me actually ever fighting again is slim ,but I also believe in the NRA lmao !!
I wanted to actually see the mma react to the instructor as if they are sparring then we can really see how akido does in a more realistic situation
Stop moving your arm I'm trying to throw you
@El Lorenzo that if you allow him to catch you just right and you are used to the resistance
That is the same rely I get from my current instructor, who belive forms are effective. I believe Sparring is the best training
@El Lorenzo sparring is the best thing for contact to use and practice technique
@El Lorenzo that's like saying I can cook better than you but I choose not to show you because I might burn down your kitchen.

i think people were expecting you to defend against an mma attack always impressed with your techniques
well, it is in the title the idea of "let's see if it works with or for them".
So the video is another thing.
@@anthonyyoung6433
Exactly! And to my knowledge, it was also supposed to be equally applicable to rifle and bayonet. And weapon retention is very important to modern law enforcement. Perhaps that's why Japanese police often study Aikido?

The grabbing of the arm and the techniques being used to counter the grab are just examples of what can be done. People make the mistake that brute force, punches, kicks etc will win. Aikido is all about using the opponent’s momentum, body movements, physiology against themselves. I did karate for over 10 years and had the opportunity to ask an aikido master to counter my attacks. Truly amazing what a master can do...all with minimal effort.
I love TMA but lets be honest, UFC 1,2,3 and 4 show you how well they work in a real fight against someone with some fighting skills.

The aikidoka's techniques work on an MMA practitioner acting like a traditional complaint uke. No surprises there.
Of course, small joint manipulations are illegal in the ring :)
exactly ....
That sounds like a really fancy way of saying " my martial art is useless unless you know another martial art... "
@@milewesler9592 Essentially, Aiki-jujutsu and Aikido were useless without samurai armor.
@@milewesler9592 I think it’s a good martial art to learn fluid motion and have confidence in your body in concert with another. That sounded weird lol. But I don’t think it should be looked at as combat martial art. It’s a lot of philosophy, spirituality and discipline. A lot of top notch mma athletes train in Aikido at some point in their life. It’s definitely good to add to other routines to help you become more confident and fluid and, let’s be honest, to get good at falling correctly lol.
@@milewesler9592 Well the founder of Aikido basically saying that Aikido is an add-ons martial arts. Btw, they were samurais, so they already have combat experience + they might be practice Aikido if in some situation they were ambushed by surprise and they'd be unarmed and no armour

@@joemalone8197 yeah I took aikido as a kid. There was never any real sparring.. just drills where people come at you with a single punch in a predictable way then stand there with the punch outstretched and cooperatively fall when you perform a throw or takedown. Most MMA, kickboxing gyms worth their salt will soar full contact as part of their training. If you’re interested in ground game most bjj or even wrestling gyms should roll with full resistance in training. Heck even good judo schools should do some sparring if you just want to play takedown vs takedown. It should be pretty easy to go to one of these gyms and organize a sparring sesh… at worst you might have to go to a few classes first.
@@antonc81 aikido is when someone punches and you use the first technique to break their arm. I dont think you understand Aikido.
It is the Western interpretation, because it is that which is displayed to the world.
For every 1 video you see on UA-cam that boast its effectiveness in actual combat, there are 9 other masters who practice silently -- away from media -- who do not claim their art is able to be a complete system.
We use it to wash dishes; we use it to clean our toilets. This is the philosophy.

The problem is... the enemy will punch us most of the time instead of grabbing our arm
Yeah, that's true. The wrist grab comes from Daito-Ryu, when grabbing the wrist was an action to prevent the opponent from drawing a weapon (sword, tanto, etc). I made a video about Aikido on my channel. Please check it out and let me know what you think 🙏🏾

Right! That can´t work. They are presenting fighting sports but no selfdefence. That´s much too complicated an not realistic attacks. In the street the fight has to be endet in 10 seconds. Btw the 2 guys obviously doen´t look like MMA fighters, who mainly fight from the distance using kicks an don´t grab to hands or fore-arms.
That is so true.
So it will work well if you already know MMA, not if you don't have that experience.
aikido is an art of counter attact as a self- defense!
Can't do much counter attack when you get knocked out or grappled down to the floor.
The opponent it ain't going start by grabbing you from the wrist, what kind of self defense is there to learn from this video.
@@llesco693 Oh, you forgot to add, the opponent needs to just stand there and let you go through you motion for this "martial arts" to work.

Thank you for this lesson.
It’s all you need from this… learn something from them all. “ mixed martial arts”
