I don't remember who it was (was just some video in UA-cam's suggestions column that I didn't choose to click on), but somebody made a video which argued that, in spite of the fact that it LOOKED like the army had things under control, the world actually WASN'T saved from the Mist. Sometimes I watch such videos because the "going against the current" perspectives they give can be mind broadening, other times I ignore them because, often as not, they're just contrarian BS.

jenmurrayxo To make the ending even more dark (if such a thing is possible), the army came from BEHIND them. Meaning that if they just stopped for a minute, the army would have caught up to them. But they literally ran from rescue until they couldn't run anymore, and then ended it before rescue could catch up.

That ending is one of the biggest gut-punches in horror film history. It takes what was a really good movie and makes it exceptional. Truly one you won't forget.
Stephen King after seeing the movie said that he wished he's thought of that ending.

@@ashscott6068 If you want a happy ending, watch some disney flick. A film which sparks such horrific gut punching emotions is a rarity once in a while. Nothing is sadder than a film you watch and at the end you just say "meh, they did a good job" and forget it. This movie will stick.

In the original story, the ending is something that is contemplated as a last resort plan, but they ultimately decide to carry on. I think that's why Darabont does such great work with SK's stuff: He knows how to amplify it for the screen while still staying true to it.

Having not seen the movie or read the book, I feel the ending is a cheap shot for emotional impact. The same ending written differently might have had a better hit. Yes the survivors had gone through an extremely traumatic night but to commit suicide at the end with no immediate threat just seems cheap after having toughed it out through so much else.

For those that have read other King novels, there is a theory that Mrs. Carmody is not praying to the Abrahamic God. When praying, she keeps repeating the mantra: "My life for you." That is the phrase used by the Trash Can Man in his devotion to Randall Flagg, the Walking Dude, from "The Stand". That explains why she is so bloodthirsty and evil acting. I really like this theory. It seems like it is part of the Stephen King Universe.

The other thing that a lot of people miss is that if he had gone in the other direction rather than going home he would have been driving toward the army and away from the Mist. But the direction they choose took them further into the Mist. That is the part that really sticks with me after all these years. I remember seeing this in the theater. If you guess right, you are a genius... and if you guess wrong then it's proof you aren't "faking reaction by watching movie you've seen 100 times", so there's no downside. The more you talk, the more content we get.

In case nobody has mentioned it ... When you see the poster for The Thing or something like it, and then notice another poster that looks like Clint Eastwood, it's actually a visual reference to The Dark Tower series of fantasy novels by Stephen King. The series was once considered a rather odd departure for King, but is now understood to be his core, definitive work ... one that has formal and informal connections to almost everything else King has written, most likely including The Mist.

Its a fine line really... Jens fine, but ive seen other reactors who guess WAY to much and either completely miss important things (only to look like idiots latter) or the video is 80% them talking about stuff and reacting to that specualtion.
Theres one pair i watch for a TV show reaction and they get so far 'into the rough' during the reaction (and with LOTS of pausing to 'speculate') that it gets pretty annoying... especially when most of the video is wildly crayzie and wrong ideas/speculation and not actual 'reacting' to the amazing show infront of them... the thing for me with reaction videos is watching the person react first to things I knows coming and see them 'get it' (I mean thats the fun isnt it), then once all thats said and done dissecting it AFTER, rightly or wrongly.
Thats why I come back every day, Jen has just the right amount of interjection, but first and foremost she reacts.

I always saw this as a sci-fi version of John Ford's "The Lost Patrol" (1934). Both had individuals stuck in an isolated area. Trying to leave will mean certain death. And both featured a religious fanatic among the group. Marcia Gay Harden in this movie, and Boris Karloff in the 1934 film.

Yes, and both had the surviving protagonist go crazy in the end.

It's a Walking Dead reunion in that grocery store! Or maybe it's more accurate to say the Walking Dead was a the Mist reunion. It would also seem that Berserk creator Kentaro Miura was a fan of the Mist, those clawed tentacles definitely served as inspiration for a monster in the manga

The most frightening story I've ever read about fog is Larry Niven's "For a Foggy Night". Fog, we're told, is not just water vapor in the air. No, it's when alternate realities overlap, and the blur you see around objects in the fog is the probability of them being in that location. Sometimes when someone goes walking in the fog, they end up in the other reality.

This is another movie of Stephen Kings that he actually thinks did the ending better.

Sooo... Fun fact, Stephen King did not have that ending in his book, the director came up with that, but King said he wishes he would have thought of it

Stephen King loved this adaptation. Other than the ending, it sticks very close to his novella. King said the Novella was an homage to monster B-movies from the 50’s, and was meant to be like something you’d see as the second movie at a drive-in theater. Darabont wanted to make the movie black and white but the studio said no; however, there is a B&W version on the Blu-Ray that I think is better than the color version.
In case you were wondering, King’s story ends ambiguously, with them driving through the mist but stopping a few times to carefully refuel. It ends with them holing up for the night in an abandoned hotel, and David hearing one word-the name of a city- come across his radio, giving them a possibility of a hopeful destination.
The novella was written in the 80s. The film version was made in the late 2000’s, at the tail end of the Bush-era, post 9/11 paranoia that America went through, and I think the darker ending reflects that.

The *REALLY* scary thing about this movie is that the fanatics like those portrayed are not fiction.
Though given the choice, I would rather not have to deal with the things in the Mist. Reality is bad enough.

Bonus comment: that organ and haunting lady was from a band called Dead Can Dance. Its called Host of Seraphim. It's haunting and has been in other movies. Can't think of a better use of it though.

Frank Darabont (the director, screenwriter, producer of this movie) adapted the graphic novel series "The Walking Dead" for TV. Used a lot of the same actors from this movie for the show. I was a big fan of that show, I think you should check it out.

the haunting music at the movie's climax is called "the host of the seraphim" by aussie "neoclassical darkwave band" dead can dance from their 1988 album "the serpent's egg". it's also on their 1991 compilation album "a passage in time", which i have. 👍

King loved the ending. The book ending was very ambiguous. It doesn't really say what happens to them, they just drive off.
I think the scariest part of this movie is the possibility the religious nut lady was right. Think about it, as soon as the son was sacrificed the mist cleared.

The music cue at the end with the haunting vocal is actually a track from the album “Spleen and Ideal” by the band ‘Dead Can Dance’. Being the obvious music lover you are, you would really appreciate them.
