How to Prevent Algae - 5 Planted Tank Tips
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 вер 2024
- Did you know that algae is one of the biggest reasons hobbyists give up on their aquariums. The good news is that if you follow some basic guidelines you can have a successful planted aquarium without suffering from any algae issues.
It is always better in the long-term to prevent algae from occurring rather than having to continual treat it. Treating various types of algae is the topic of a separate video so let us know in the comments which types of algae you would like to know more about.

Remember guys the most important thing to fight algae is patience..
Do water changes, adjust the light, ferts, and the flow, also do manual remover, and add some algae eater like in this video.
I always see algae as a "balancer" in my tank, if there's some imbalance in my tank, algae helps me to 're-balancing' it. That way I can tricked myself to be less worried (and sometimes mad) so I can focused on the root cause of the problem.
Good luck!
Best comment ever! This is the simplest way to tackle algae
Great content Sir. I am battling Green String algae these days.
Keep your aquarium simple, you can't capture the nature in a glass box, can u? Don't try that instead go for frequent holidays.. spend there not on these foolish tanks I have a 5 ft tank but it's very basic, with lot of small fishes which soothes my nerve.. and small amount of drift wood/rocks/ and plants... enjoy
@@cablenetworksystems Thank You, Nice Advice
@@cablenetworksystems In my experience simple tanks can get algae problems, warm weather, high stocking, window light in the Spring and Autumn (as strong sun slips in at a lower angle), high oxygenation and decaying plants starved of CO2 - been keeping fish and plants for over 50 years, seen it all. Good luck.
@@williammcdowell6257 ok I am only 50 plus.. so not so experience like you, the professionals tear up their set up in 1 or 2 year most after spending fortune( at least they promote to boost up business) I maintain a 5 ft tank with a good filter, quite a big drift wood, white sand, some plant and some Christmas and java moss, with some rare tetras and others who mix well with them, kept few crocodile fish for algae and put black sticker in 3 side except the front to minimize the light from out side... I have been doing great with minimum maintenance and kept it low tech as I don't prefer to box the nature in a glass box and then burn huge amount of electricity. I have a small solar unit which is enough to sustain my 5 ft tank and not producing or contributing much on our environment which all of have to keep in our mind. Thank you for your wise advise and hope you will be wiser... Good luck to you too
@@cablenetworksystems Yes I do understand, and am a big fan of a genuinely green approach, the closest I have achieved is to tweak the Walstad method with yeast generated CO2. High tech tanks are a bit of misnomer, and really, they rarely use much additional electricity, but of course, if stem plants are grown there is a lot of trimming etc., for myself I choose to grow a range of plants but I definitely, like you, do feel that some aqua-scapers lose sight of something in the hobby, but I stick to my simple point, algae like sin, is no man's prerogative. Do continue to enjoy the hobby.
Always love your tanks. I just bought the phyllanthus for my new tank and already existing tanks. Thanks for your wisdom sir !
I always seem to have staghorn pop up in my high energy systems, mainly on rock and wood. I'll have a heavily planted tank, do weekly 50% water changes, dose a comprehensive fertilizer daily, and keep my CO2 around 30ppm, and test for virtually 0 nitrates. Despite these ideal conditions, I still see staghorn. I mostly keep shrimp and snails so most nuisance algae never makes an appearance, but staghorn is one unwelcomed guest I always seem to run into.
Love your comment that a little bit of algae is normal. And completely algae free is not likely. Plus the video of plants with a little bit of algae. From a professional source like Tropica and George as being normal ..
A very timely video! 🦠 Zero algae for the first 160 days or so of my scape, then it seems as the days got longer and lighter and I changed up my plant feeding routine, some hair algae and some green spot algae has appeared. I’ve just removed a whole clump of moss (which was growing well but I couldn’t get the strands of algae out) and two java ferns which have been struggling since I put them in and never recovered. Also I cut off the worse-affected anubius leaves. Also
continuing with usual weekly maintenance with a 50% water change. Hoping this will prevent too much algae growth. My next step is to fill in the gaps with a couple more new healthy javas, a nice big buce, and perhaps another anubius or something, and also reduce the photoperiod. Fingers crossed!
Not sure if you’re still dealing with green spot algae but if you test your phosphate levels it’ll show that it’s either too high or too low. Oround 1ppm phosphate is where you want to be. I have to supplement phosphate using Seachem Phosphorus every other day and this stopped the green spot algae. Hope this helps.
@@ojno11 thanks! That's a great tip - appreciated!
Great helpful advice George 👍
String and green spots
Left my light on for a week while on a trip. Absolute algae explosion when i got back
this is why you have timers
@@jackoghost Maybe he does. I've accidently turned on the "always on" button of my timer once. Noticed this only after 5 days :(
Superb... Simple and clear.. thanks George Farmer.
I think have some algae in our plant tanks is not harming, actually in nature there is no algaeless river or lake or pond. Btw nice content 🙂
I have given up my 20year hobby resently because of algae,Heartbroken, then after watching M D who recommend you found out it was my lighting, hope to set up a nano tank soon ,thank you I will certainly be looking at plants ,one question I have limited money do you really need Co2 or can I buy plants to do the job ? Cheers x
Hi. If you only use Easy category plants you can easily get away without CO2. tropica.com/en/plants/search/?mode=search&sew=&dif=Easy&pgr=&ori=&use=
Awesome and straight to the point!
Brilliant video. More about hair algae and brown algae would be good 👍
Using fertilizer, weekly 40% water change, canister filter, co2 setup... 3hrs lighting
It's great useful video.
Thanks for sharing 💯
The only algae type I have and cant seem to get rid of... Is GSA... Aquarium glass is easy to clean but on plant leaves... Amano shrimps dont seem to eat them either!
Great info I would love to see more videos on BBA I have a lot of it on my fluval edge I have java fern anubias and cryps what other plants do you recommend as the lighting is not very bright so I have to use low light plants I do have alge right deep in my substrate I am using JBL Pro flora keeps active for 5 years and its topped of with mando 1mm quarts gravel I don't know if its cyanobacteria how do I get rid of it cheers
Perfect and great Video!!
Super!!👍👍👍👍
my challenge now are diatoms in my new setup tank.
diatoms will go away as your tank cycles, just have patience and don't change too much
Thx for the tips I need them right now 😅
Guide on staghorn algae please! I've been plagued for a while on a heavily planted tank
Same
@@edward7945 I beat staghorn by dialing in my co2 , adding a Siamese algae eater and not over trimming my plants , If you really knock back your plants all at once it can throw things out of balance. Instead it's best to trim small amounts more frequently and separately , like stems one week, carpet another week. etc.
Hi I'm gonna buy tropica fertilizer fir my lowtech aquarium. I read that phosphate is essential for even slow growing plants & fish waste does not produce enough phosphate & need to be added in inorganic form.so I'm confused of buying tropica premium or tropica specialized fertilizer. Can you suggest me?
I would love to learn more about Staghorn Algae. Great video!
Diy you have video about diagnosing nutrient deficiencies? That's what I'm struggling at.
People on forums will be able to identify them for you. Or you could just start dosing EI and you don’t have to worry about deficiencies.
Love the german named plant trugenkölbchen
Ceratopteris Thalictroides plant (fern) number 1 as an algae prevention
A while back you showed a large angel aquarium with zero plants. Angels will eat shrimp so what are the best ways to prevent algae in such an aquarium?
nice video there, my tank near to my air stone bubbles have dark colored algae they just stick on to the glass and not alot of them, are these ok?
I recently needed to rebuild my aquarium and now i have a little bit off Green Fuzz algae and Green Beard algae. Hope they will go away with the wather changes and my CO2 on right level
Thanks 👌👍
Watersprites grow a dark almost brown to black mold looking algae. Could this be due to water hardness?
My tank is 4 weeks old. I use tropica soil powder and pressurized co2. I'm having hair algae now for 2 weeks. I don't know if I should fertilize the plants or not. The levels of no3 and po4 are almost zero. I also have bright light. Some fast growing plants and medium as well. In the Foreground I have acicularis mini. Please help
Great my concern is black beard algae and hair algae I constantly change water tank is densely planted but still I could not come out of this issue.
Anubias leaves are covered with algae very upsetting
Kindly advice
I had both in my 20 gallon tank, I started feeding my fish less and lowered the light from 10 to 8 hrs a day and it all went away. I think once the black beard started to die, I saw my snails and shrimp eating it more.
I don't bother with Anubias anymore, They are a magnet for algae
This is normally a CO2 circulation issue. Not normally light related. You may need extra water movement and rearrange hardscape to ensure flow through the full tank. Good luck, this is hard one to completely crack.
Does algae form if tank kept near the window where sunlight falls??
Hi, it's not generally recommended to place a tank near the window; to answer your question directly, yes, algae will form easier if the aquarium is placed near the window.
@@TropicaAquariumPlants I have put curtains to protect the tank from sunlight. Now how do I remove the ones formed inside and ensure no further developments
I have staghoen algae in my Discus set up
And BBA in another tank but the temp is around 23-24c
Nice and informing video! Congratulations!
White mould
Green hair algae always come. What should i do to remove it .
i battling the green spot algae on leaves f the plant how to kill it pls help
My aquarium plant suffering green spot algae on few leafs how to rid of...?
GDA , how to fight them?
Just the video I needed 😂
I have had a tank for over 30 yrs and never been able to control black beard algae, i dim the lights plants die, i add algae eating fish, they stop eating it, i change the water up to different percentages, it still comes back, i add Co2, no difference. Maybe its just time for me to admit im not good at this and give up keeping fish.
I want to control algae in my planted tank. Algae looks like Maidens hair algae or beard alage... suggest me the solution.
how to prevent green spot algae
I've got green beard algae
plz suggest something abt green blue algae (Cyanobacteria) its been 1 month my planted tank has this problem.
get a syringe and inject some liquid carbon into the substrate where it's appearing.
Test for high levels of Nitrate & Phosphate - you may need to reduce light duration for a time and simultaneously change a lot of water (assuming your tap water is low in Nitrate and Phosphate). Long term fix you may need a better/larger filter and reduce stocking levels. Blue Green is primarily caused by pollution, light and temperature. Good news is that it is the easiest to fix.
Staghorn & BBA
Your videos are very cinematic and informative. Please continue this series!
i think for BBA the solution is to reduce overfeeding of the tank, increase water changes and addition of CO2. otherwise there are chemical agents which can help with it.
Do hairalgea
Algae on substrate and plantes leaves
idk what algae im facing but its white strings
Time and time again you say to plant heavily to help prevent algae, but what if you only want a moderately planted tank? What then?
reduce fertilisation to reduce excess nutrients in the water column. can also monitor lighting/CO2/temp and water changes in response to the algae situation.
BLACK BEARD ALAGE I hate it and I've been battling for a year
Me too.. All the time! I'm just setting up an RO system, a cheap one, hopefully it solves the issue.. Tried everything else.
Staghorn Algae please :(
Compostegon
Hair algae
👍🏾😎
I have black beard algae in one tank and cyano in the other. Pain in the butt.
Hair algae and black beard. Definitely need more content LoL
Hi Sandra. You can check out our video on hair algae if you want. :)

Help me fight the Green Dust Algae.
To me, algae is like a horrible nightmare. 😢
Black beard algea
Cyanobacteria
I'm under attack by Staghorn and BBA, need help....waaaaaahhhhh!
Your video is scary, I keep my tank simple, a good filter/water change and that's it.. algae does not show up as I keep changing the aquascape.. which I am sure u guys do that also... then why spend so much ??
