- Want to know how to freeze dry at home? This videos shows every step of the freeze drying process using a Harvest Right freeze dryer so you can see just how easy it is to preserve your food for years to come.
Have you heard of a Harvest Right freeze dryer and wondered what freeze drying really is? A harvest right freeze dryer is the perfect way to preserve food and create a food storage that can last up to 24 years!
Fresh or cooked foods are placed in the Harvest Right freeze dryer where they are frozen to -40 degrees Fahrenheit or colder.
Once the food is frozen, the Harvest Right freeze dryer creates a powerful vacuum around the food. Then, as the food is slightly warmed, the ice transitions into vapor and evaporates.
The freeze-dried food is then sealed in moisture and oxygen-proof packaging (Mylar bags, mason jars, or cans) along with an oxygen absorber to ensure freshness until opened.
When water is added to the food it regains its original fresh flavor, aroma, and appearance.

Are you still using your freeze dryer? Have you had any issues with it?
While people were scrambling to buy toilet paper and food prep because of this plandemic, I stayed home working on my garden and planned on the next meals to freeze dry.
*TOILET PAPER IS KING!!!*
You can wipe b*tt with it, wipe your tears (when times get rough), turn it into hundreds of little shopping lists, wrap yourself in it like a mummy to scare away zombies, use them as binoculars, stack them for fun, use it as emergency gift wrapping paper for forgotten wedding anniversary (studies show that 75% of all men die under mysterious circumstances due to forgotten wedding anniversaries), you can stick them to your walls to create a padded cell in case you go insane during a lockdown, you can wear toilet rolls under you feet to minimize the pain caused by the crushing of skulls and bones you have to trample over when the civil war begins, use them as bandage, trade it for food, roll it all out and compare the total length of all your rolls to establish your dominance level in the hierarchy (longest paper wins), rip paper into pieces and glue them back together because you have nothing else to do and lastly you can eat it.

Welcome to the freeze drying community. I've had my large dryer and oil less pump for almost 2 years now and still run it almost 24/7. I've done almost everything you could think of. I still watch videos on them to learn new tips and sometimes what not to do. There is a learning curve with these machines that everyone goes through - don't be afraid - you will make mistakes, but over all you'll enjoy your new freeze dryer.
Remember that fresh vegetables need to be blanched as if you were preparing them for the freezer or they just won't come out like you want them to. Store bought frozen vegetables have already had this done and can be dried right from the store. Things with high sugar content don't do well and will never get dry. Things with high fat don't do well - so don't try to do sausage or hot dogs - you'll just have an oily mess to clean up.
Meats (lean) cooked or raw, dairy, eggs, fruits, vegetables, soups, stews, whole prepared meals, all do very well. I like to make my own whole powdered milk and powdered eggs.
Almost any food can be freeze dried with a few exceptions and most will rehydrate well with a few exceptions.
If you ever have a question feel free to reach out - I'll help in any way I can.
Is it still working? And how is it going so far?

So glad I've found out you can freeze dry at home. I need more fruit in my diet and can only eat freeze dried. But its SO expensive. £15 for 250g of FD raspberries!
Why can you only eat freeze dried?!
@@ChelseaJadeC I just hate texture of fruit. Where as freeze dried its nice and chewy and 'together' don't get mouthful of bits
How do you properly seal the food you choose to keep in the canning jars? Or are those only used for easy access (snacking)? Also, I think I'd want to heat that meal up in the microwave..adding hot water doesn't seem like it would do much. Hot water to rehydrate fruit as well if you don't want to eat them frozen and crunchy? Super curious!
I just got mine in it’s much bigger than I thought but can’t wait to use 😁

Freeze dried sliced red grapes are my favorite. It’s seriously just like eating candy. I never thought to do cherry tomatoes but I bet that’s super good.

I buy lots of freeze dried fruits and it can get expensive but I doubt I’d save money purchasing one.
If you buy a ton of freeze dried food .. over time you would save a lot of money. I waited since 2016 to get on. It is even more amazing than I thought
@@robinpoff106 how much did you spend on your freeze dryer??
I don’t spend a “ton”…. But I spend a good amount. I’d certainly eat a lot more freeze dried stuff if not for the cost.
@@toniroberts8117 I think it was about 3 grand with extra stuff for convenience. But I love freeze dried soups and snacks.. Honestly if you get your food when in season and on sale it is 10 to 25 percent of the cost of purchased freeze dried food. I bought a medium but a small is less money
@@robinpoff106 yeah I’d like to wait a bit and see if the price goes down. 3 grand is still a rather big chunk of change for a device I’d only use occasionally to make snacks. @@BankruptMonkey every prepper knows rule no. 1) never live in a city
@@MochaZilla I want to prepare some for hard times, not make my entire life miserable as a sacrifice for preparing just in case things might go bad. Besides that though in the city I have resources like other people to help me which my community has helped me before, whereas my relatives in the countryside have to do it all by themselves and occasionally get stuff stolen or property trashed by distant neighbors, so the city is for me either if things go well or there are hard times.

In the UK there are companies that do rentals of freeze dryers from.1 month onwards. The more months you rent, there is a slight discount. Still expensive - minimum £600.00 but much cheaper than the £1,000's required for one of these machines. I am.sure in the USA there are companies that do a rental. You do have to pay a deposit as well. Usually about £1,000. in the UK but younger it back. They come and train you how to use it. I can't afford not right now but definitely will save up towards it. I could rent for 1 month do all my fresh foods, veg & fruit.

Awesome video!
I tried freeze drying some frozen precooked sausage patties. It seems there was more grease that came out and stuck the sausage to the trays. When I pried them loose they had grease under them. The patties were dry enough but the grease means they will have to be used immediately. It also got under the liners and stuck them to the pans. Generally one nasty mess.
Too much sugar or too much grease just doesn’t freeze dry well..
maybe you should have done some research on high fat foods and freeze drying...

What is the difference between freeze drying and dehydrator. Which is more dryer? For countries with high humidity & very hot temperature is freeze dryer better?
They are completely different in operation and achieve different results. Regular dehydrator uses high temperature to force all of the water from food to evaporate. Because it happens when water is in its liquid state, the effect of surface tension causes food to shrunk which makes it harder and results in loss of its structure. Also, heating the food up will cause it to lose some of its nutritional value, because some nutrients do not survive heating.
Freeze drying on the other hand freezes food to -40 degrees Celsius and uses vacuum to force the water from food to evaporate (or, in this case, sublimate) without coming through liquid state, this difference effectively eliminates surface tension, so the only thing that could cause freeze dryed food to shrunk is gravity, which is pretty weak, so it doesn't make a difference. The result is food where water is replaced with air, freeze dryed food could be soft or crunchy. I don't think that climate makes a difference in terms of dried food, air always contains water and oxygen, so if you don't store your food in the basement somewhere on the Mars, you should seal any dried food that you want to preserve for the long time
Thank you so much! Can you reuse the moisture absorber or do you need to have new ones? Weʻre going to buy a machine. Just collecting information right now.
Oxygen absorbers are 1 time use and are very expensive.
No - O2 absorbers are not expensive. I buy 1000 at a time in 50 packs for about $0.15 each on line. If you haven't bought one yet - I can tell you that the large dryer will process more food than the small and medium dryer.....combined. In my opinion the large is the best value - and the oil less pump is well worth the extra money. I've had my large dryer and oil less pump since Dec. 2018 and run it almost 24/7. Best investment I've ever made.

Can the Mylar bags be used with a seal-a-meal? Would there be any benefit to vacuum sealing freeze dried foods?
Freeze drying only gets rid of the water from food so vacuum sealing additionally provides two benefits. It keeps humidity from rehydrating the food before you want to as well as it protects the food from oxygen exposure. The food still contains fat so if left exposed to oxygen the fats will oxidize and turn rancid.
No - an Oxygen absorber is used in the bag and heat sealed. When the O2 is removed it will pull a slight vacuum. O2, temperature and light will effect food the most.
What's your electric bill like when using one of those?
Do I have to vacuum seal the food or no? Or does it last longer if I do?
An oxygen absorber is used in these Mylar bags - no reason to vacuum seal. Bags are heat sealed and the O2 absorber removes all O2 and will draw a slight vacuum inside the bag.
