  • If you want to lose weight and gain muscle, eating protein isn't the problem, refined carbs and fats are.
Dr. Ted Naiman is a board-certified family practice physician, who leads a major medical center in Seattle. He not only reads a lot of the literature, but he interfaces with patients. That part is the most valuable, especially when we're thinking about complex systems and how can we help the most amount of people. You have to be able to take the literature and implement it into real-life practice.
    In this episode we discuss:
    - The ideal ranges for blood markers
    - How to really move the needle on body fat
    - The most effective ways to change your body composition
    - How much protein you should be eating

Thanks Dr. Lyon❤ I did not know how important dietary protein and skeletal muscles are until I heard you spoke in one of the interviews. I’ve been a big fan since. You’ve definitely changed my eating habits to focus on protein intake at each meal, and incorporating weight training. I rarely make comments on UA-cam but I have learned sooooo much from this interview from you and Dr. Naiman. Big thanks for sharing this valuable information and knowledge from your practices. I love the passion you have for muscle-centric medicine. I love the part when Dr. Naiman talked about his progression in ditching those meaningless lab work. It’s wonderful and music to my ears - I enjoyed this episode so much!! Please keep up the great work!!! ❤

Nobody has distilled nutrition better than Naiman. The man is in a league of his own for simplicity and efficacy -- true marks of genius -- and his book is an undervalued masterpiece.
It's kind of sad that here we are in the 21st century with skyscrapers and nuclear power and we have doctors and other supposed experts who are still trying to figure out what to eat. The industrialization of food and the monetization of medicine has not been kind to human progress. Thank you both for having the humility and integrity to be real doctors. 💪

I’ve been carnivore since April to heal some issues that I’m tired of. One of them is lower G.I. Asthma and arthritic pain. I am probably 90% better. I very seldom eat fiber and very seldom eat vegetables and I don’t eat cheese because I know that’s my asthma trigger. I also can’t eat Mexican spices or pepper. I know that I can’t eat melted fat. The carnivore diet is the best way to eliminate everything and start fresh to see what is bothering you. Everybody is different and needs to tweak their diet according to how they feel. I went from using an inhaler three times a night to zero. I went from my hip hurting so bad I couldn’t walk to no taking daily walks. . And now my morning routine is much better. I don’t have to run to the bathroom and hope I make it which I suffered time for over 20 years. I don’t believe there is essential fiber or carbohydrates. I also found I did not need electrolytes. People crush electrolytes and I have never needed them. I did try some and I did feel good on it but after not having it I realized I didn’t even need it. My suggestion is to quit listening to all these people and their opinions and do what works for you. And I believe what works is Carnivore. I don’t believe you can eat too much protein. Your body will use what it needs and figure out the rest. I believe in eating too satiety and I do start my day like Kelly Hogan says by eating. A routine is very important for your body function

I have to admit I’m not agnostic. I don’t try to eat extra fat. I let my body burn the fat on my body. But I’m not afraid of eating the fat that comes with my protein. I focus on eating animal protein because it’s hard for me to get in enough just eating 2 meals. And why am I only eating 2 meals? Because I’m not hungry for more. And that’s why I’m not agnostic. Glucose and Insulin goes up when I eat carbs. Not so when I eat protein with a bit of fat.

Teflon, He doesn't seem very open minded about saturated fats, which is the myth that started this whole dietary disaster. If he was open minded he would be saying 'I don't really know' when is comes to sat fats. I, who never has done any lab work, can say I don't REALLY know but have changed to a moderately high satfat diet (at age 74) have reversed stage 3 CKD, overcome arthritis in my thumb, added 10 pounds of muscle, have energy to burn and much more. I feel like I did at 40 cuz I don't run away from satfats. I feel each to their own but know that what works for them may be a disaster to you or me. To believe them is to just take what they say on authority and is not actual fact. I do agree with Ted in one way - Try stuff and see what works. long life and blessing to you.

I started eating high protein, cut my non fiber carbs and fat, and pretty much all of my digestive issues that were majorly affecting quality of life stopped. Also my hot flashes stopped. More and more of the issues are falling by the wayside as I continue. Diet can cause so many issues, all physicians should be highly trained in this area!

Dr. Lyon- The title of the show is what foods to eat to lose weight and gain muscle ??? This is the third show I’ve watched of yours that your title does not relate to the contact of the show, and the discussion that is quite involved, however, does not relate to the title of your show that is advertised with the lineup of all of the other shows. I enjoy watching your programs however, it’s very disappointing and misleading after coming to the end of your show and the topic is not addressed it’s as if you are using a topic to get viewers to watch. I just feel that it’s very dishonest and misleading to people that spend an hour expecting the information you have advertised. I saw a similar comment on another video and somewhat agreed. For this one, however, I think you just have to listen closely. Maybe Google. For instance, he mentions lean protein; I'd say Google examples of it. The intro alone was actually quite helpful. I kind of get it; it'd be simpler for him to just rattle off a list of foods. However, I believe as doctors they want you to understand why these foods are best. For me, that's more helpful and sustainable.

I have been a RD for 22yrs w/ a MS in Nutrition. Many RDs have been speaking about a well rounded diet of plenty of protein, healthy fats & complex carbs in appropriate ratios for a healthy lifestyle that includes wt bearing/wt training & cardio activity. Unfortunately, many MDs have sooo many "books" out on their theories backed by biased science to support X diet; atkins, keto, vegan, etc. I am so happy to see you speaking about "real" nutrition. In 2014 I ate a vegan diet for 6 months & never felt worse in my life. In addition, the push for non meat protein sources for the environment is ludicrous. Address China first then ask me to not eat a steak.
Dr. Lyons, you speak eloquently about science & provide a non judgemental assessment and advice for the population.
Listening to some providers and the language they use along with pushing their own agenda drives me nuts but unfortunately the public buys in.
And, Gabriella - diabetes is a skeletal muscle, gut, liver, pancreatic, adiposity tissue & brain disease.
I love that you note you have never had a HgbA1c under 5. I tried not to laugh at that bio marker goal.
Liked info on HDL, TRIG, AST, ALT, etc.
Thank you for your dedication to your field.
Last, Ted notes the need to be in a kcal deficit from exercise & food but how can people do that if they don't know how many kcals they should be consuming; considering he doesn't give kcal goals.
I do note that most calculations for kcal needs is faulty. I would love to hear what you do to advise your patients on total intake. My patients do want to track their macros but you need total kcal to start.

The shotgun approach to bloodwork Ted mentions speaks to a larger issue with how the heath industry is monetized at this point. People go away to a weekend course and comeback calling themselves a "Nutrition Coach", they get their "clients" to pay for a crapload of tests and then they espouse some cookie cutter wisdom that the learned from the company that gave them the weekend certification. As a result many "coaches" are trying to make health and fitness _so_ much more complicated than it needs to be, which is why I appreciate Dr. Naiman's book. If you are out of shape, eat more protein than fat, eat to satiety and exercise for 30 minute a day, lather, rinse, repeat. Easy peasy
If more people took that money they'd spend on tests to buy themselves a nice ribeye, they'd be a lot happier. ;)

I have thought of that idea as well. For example you for example you get a blood test. The results indicate x so you eat to deal with x. less simple carbs, less sugars. Or go straight to the treatment irregardless of testing. Your body just cares what food it's using.

@@andrewshandle How much fat in %?

    • @andrewshandle
      @andrewshandle Рік тому

@@markaguilera493 Here's the problem, it's all kind of BS when it comes to percentages simply because cooking anything with fat results in the fat melting, so even if you have something like 90/10 ground beef, unless you lick the pan you cooked it in dry, you won't get all the fat on the label, so take _all_ of this with a grain of salt.
But, for the sake of argument, if you just eat meat for a meal, every gram of protein is 4 kcal, every gram of fat is 9 kcal, So 100g of protein and 100g of fat in a huge meal is 1300 calories, 400 are protein, 900 are fat, so that's 30% of your calories from protein which is what Dr. Naiman suggests as a starting point. This example is a 1:1 ratio of grams of protein : grams of "energy" (Fat + net Carbs), which is what Dr. Naiman suggests for people who are happy with their body fat percentage. He wrote an entire book on it called the P:E Diet which is an interesting read (but sucks to read on a phone via Kindle, much better on a laptop or iPad).
If you are trying to lose weight Naiman suggests changing that ratio to favor _more_ protein (thus lowering fat/carbs). So let's say instead you eat 120g or protein and 80g of fat, that's 1200 calories (down from 1300), but protein now makes up 480 calories, so its' up to 40%. The idea is the extra protein helps you with satiety and fills you up, and it helps build muscle.
He also "caps" the daily protein at what your ideal weight is for your height (which might be a bit lower than you think). This is more to make sure you don't overeat than saying there is a problem with protein. So let's just say a person is overweight and out of shape and their ideal weight is 175 lb but are at 230 lb. That person would start with 175g of protein needed for the day (probably split between two meals on a 16/8 hour eating cycle), and as long as they ate under 175g of Fat + Net Carbs, they will be fine with his systems and you will lose body fat while maintaining or building muscle...you have to remember that like 90% of the population is under-muscled do to the fact that so few people eat even close to enough protein, so changes are a guy who is 55lb over weight needs to gain some muscle as they recomp.
As we saw from the first paragraph, this means that at it's absolute lowest, Protein will always be at least 30% of calories, but if you have significant weight to lose, bumping that to 40% or more is fine...and that's assuming you are eating just Protein and Fat for simple math. If you are eating Fat + Carbs, you might get as high as 50% protein...but the danger is, it's very easy to overeat when you include processed carbs.

I think when anyone starts this journey, it's necessary to pick one camp (Low carb, Keto, carnivore, Paleo) and explore it completely. If nothing else it's starts the journey into knowledge about just how complex it all is. Once you can master one diet, you can begin to incorporate other aspects because you'll have that base understanding of what each one does. Simply cutting calories doesn't work, but you won't understand that until you learn how everything works. I started out as low carb, then keto, then carnivore, now going back towards low carb. The difference is in the beginning I didn't know which carbs to keep and which to cut so I cut them all. Now I understand which carbs are beneficial. Great talk!

      _potassium

I’m confused by Dr. Ted saying you don’t need saturated fat. I’m assuming it’s still true that the body DOES need fat but that he’s saying it doesn’t have to be saturated? So that leaves polyunsaturated and monounsaturated? So I’m thinking pork and olive oil? I’m hoping he’s not referring to polyunsaturated seed oils which I’ve heard are pro-inflammatory and actually bad for heart health. Unless this is not true?
Also, if the nitrogen isotope tests from the fields of archaeology and anthropology are true, then we’ve been eating fatty meats for 300,000 to arguably 3 million yrs. I believe that would include saturated fats in those fatty meats. How then is this suddenly contraindicated in the modern diet? Especially since us modern humans are not that biologically different from our recent ancestors?
