  • Bonding boy guinea pigs can be a challenge. In my experience at the Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue, bonding any two boys is about 20% successful. We have so many boys that need good homes, so we usually can find a match. Gari is a crazy teenage guinea pig and he has been too aggressive with all of his matches. This video might actually increase julian’s chances of being adopted. Because now people will see how non confrontational he is. He just needs a buddy that once dominance is established won’t continue asserting it 24/7

    To those viewers who are concerned about the skinny pig girl who is on Pine bedding, that was just temporary and she is now on a completely fleece lined cage.

      Can you do a video on all the beddings and they're pros and cons. I saw a video you said kiln dried pine is okay and I was thinking of switching to that but idk

      I've had bores all my life....I'm 32 and had piggies sense age 12....and I've always used pine bedding with no repercussions and health problems on their part....each one with a vary healthy life span😊

      Ok... much talk about ginnybedding... What to do as human and not liking beds... I sleep in my sofa.. Found it outside a house in the village with a sign'take it or leave it' I took it. All my furniture from dumpsters or leftovers some where else from... Have a Charles Jourdansofa found among some birchtrees waiting for The collectingvan some years ago.. rolled it home like a football among the trees.. and stopped some times for a little nap as it was very heavy. (hove qute the piggies chazing eachother in the middle of this vid🌞❤️please read my directinsta to You, I beg You, M

    Hey Scotty, just looking over the comments. You know someone had a good idea! Neutering male piggies is considered pretty safe, so why not nueter Gari and get him a girl piggy?! I think it's a great idea, Skinnypigs1 is doing it, and she's pretty careful about things, and besides, a neutered male and a female is a perfect match!

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1 5 років тому +9

      I know some people are quite nervous about risks for neutering. It is a lot to think about and take in. Scott does have access to a lot of different males to try vs the average person who can't keep taking in more and more piggies LOL so I understand him trying the male with male approach. If he did have an excellent vet for neutering, pairing Gary with a baby female would work like a dream.

    Poor Gari - I can see things from your perspective not wanting to get him neutered, but then he's probably looking at a life of either being on his own or with a partner that he just barely gets along with, or even multiple partners that end up not working (just going off all the non-matches he's had already). It's a tough choice but great that you're trying so hard to find him a buddy :)

    Soooo funny when you gave Gary & Julian the carrot, and then all the weeeking commenced from all the guinea pigs lol. Love your guinea pigs, your videos, and the way you give them the same level of care as I give to my heard of guinea pigs. I did have a heard of 7 guinea pigs. Though sadly my oldest passed away August last year (2018), her name was Poochie. Then we sadly lost Emi Bubbles 2nd Jan this year, both I'm still heartbroken over. I just wanted to say watching your videos really makes me so happy. I love learning more about guinea pigs. As i feel even though I know a fair amount that I can also always learn even more valuable information. Thank you for everything you do for us and all the guinea pigs too :)

    We don't have a guinea pig rescue so I adopted my boys from 2 different shelters. They were ok for a week but the neutered male was relentless with the older intact male so they are separate but are close so they know they are not alone. Was definitely not expecting to have 2 cages but there you go, you just never know 😀.

    I love my two boys! They’re only about 2-3 weeks apart in age, and I bonded them myself. I bonded differently than you did, in a much bigger area and huge piles of veggies and hay. I don’t blame you for not wanting to neuter. I chose to give it a shot with two males because I wasn’t willing to risk it either. Keep in mind, males need at least a 2x5 C&C to be happy together. Males go through puberty phases until about 18 months and will get very testy. Never separate unless blood is drawn or it makes the bonding process worse! My boys have had little tiffs, but we all 3 stuck it out, and they’re best friends now! I personally wouldn’t have separated these two just because it is a dominance dance, not a fight. Poor Julian.. Good luck!!

  • @Rise2theTopAdam4ever
    @Rise2theTopAdam4ever 4 роки тому

    I had a female so dominant she fought with all four of my piggies. So, to debunk rumours that a pig can't be happy alone, I present Chloe. A pig who lived happy with me for almost eight years, as a single.

    This might be a crazy suggestion, but is there another Rescue in CA that alters its females? Metropolitan spays all females. I also remember hearing about fixed GPs showing up at your Rescue from time to time. I have 2 pretty aggressive neutered males and I can’t imagine them living with other males. It’s amazing how many males you can get to lo Bond. Bad bonds are no joke. A couple of years ago I didn’t realize my pigs were having problems until my female ended up with 13 stitches. We were very lucky we found her in time and had a good vet. And this was in a 2x 5 C&C.

    *Scott* I'm not a vet nor very educated on meds piggies can have but would it be possible to give a piggie like Billy and Gary who are very aggressive spirinolactone? Aggression is basically high levels of testosterone and spirinolactone neutralizes testosterone. So in extremely low dose it would lower Gary's testosterone making him more mellow and less aggressive. Same for Billy. It's not horribly expensive and you can buy it online and it's taken orally so maybe if Saskia or a vet thinks it's a good idea you could give it to both Gary and Billy then after a week or so you could even put them back together.
    See piggies are just like people, we all produce chemicals differently some people produce to much testosterone or estrogen, some people produce to much adrenaline, etc. Just because there aren't any endocrinologists for piggies doesn't mean we shouldn't consider the same chemical imbalances. Like I said I'm not a vet so this idea could be horrible or possibly stupid? But it's an idea that came to me and it's worth investigation. Let me know what you think Scott.

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1 5 років тому

    • @Kitty-Marks
      @Kitty-Marks 5 років тому

      @@skinnypigs1 definitely but I respect Scott's decision not to nueter because the risk is too big for him. I've nuetered one of my male piggies and it wasn't a big deal but I understand his anxiety behind it. Which is why I suggested the spirinolactone.

    Why is neutering surgery risky? One of my boys hasn't dropped both baby makers and a hard lump has developed in the no baby maker side. • @ScottysAnimals

      Might want to talk to the vet. I have a list of vets on my website. It is a risky surgery because very frequently the incision site gets infected and also very frequently the boys do not wake up. With an experienced vet there should be nothing to worry about but I have seen and heard a lot of sad stories. At the Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue we only keep same six pairs and groups of girls. Neutering is more crucial for rabbits and other animals. Yes it is true a spaying surgery can often prevent complications in female reproductive health. Please talk to a vet about it

    I know you do know your stuff with guinea pigs, but you're too hasty to remove a pig from the situation, you have to let them get through that part there isn't any fighting or biting or blood being drawn or anything like that, but because they were bonded elsewhere they need to re evaluate who is in charge once they go into the cage (just bonded the 6th boar into my group so I know a few things about bonding boars) you have to let them hump it out though, teeth chattering is fine as long as it stays to that, I even have a pair of boys who a few months ago had a fight, I re bonded them after that and now they're happy to a point where they cuddle each other when they sleep
    Long story short, stop being so hasty with taking the pig out the situation! Especially when you lift him out in the middle of it it just restarts it, let him hump it out and they will both be happy by the next day

    • @ScottysAnimals
      @ScottysAnimals  5 років тому +4

      Hi Lucas, thank you for your insightful comment I too have a lot of experience with this I have been bonding boys for over 5 years. I have done thousands of bondings. In this case with the very first Bond Champion you can see in real time they were going to fight. In the second case with Julian as I mentioned Julian was surrendered because he was in a situation where he was bullied. There's no reason to bond two boys together when one of them is constantly bullied and picked on. We have many guinea pigs to choose from and I want the best life for them. If you watch my other videos you will see that I absolutely do not remove them too early but in the case with champion there was about to be biting and in the case with Julie and as I mentioned he was being relentlessly humped for hours on end and that is not the situation that he deserves. Your comments and experience are very valuable to this Channel and all of the subscriber so please continue to provide your valuable insight

    I managed to bond my boars for the first try. And now according to this video i see its not that easy and I was just super lucky. Its just sad that most people buy ONLY females. There are many males in the rescues because people dont want to deal with them.

    Why don’t you just put some kind of color on him so you know which one is him put him in a room of a whole bunch of boys and let him pick out who is going to be his buddy

    Scott I have tried and tried to get across the point to Saskia that skinnies should not be housed on the wood shavings and need soft fleece items in their cage. It saddens me to no end to see that skinny in the video on the wood with nothing soft to lay on. And if thats the pregnancy watch cage like I think it is she will have to deliver hairless babies on those shavings. In the very least they should have care fresh! I have offered to foster skinnies at the rescue too and its not like I am some random person offering this, but I was told no. Its just so sad :-( Maybe you can talk to her. I really have tried.

      Valerie'sZoo scotty, Valerie put another comment on the video about this earlier aswell, so not sure if you’ll be replying but might be best to speak about Valerie’s concerns privately instead of on the page of this video as it is sad to think people aren’t sure you’re doing the right thing by your pigs at the rescue. It seems Valerie only has the pigs best interest at heart like you always do, and we all do too as pig lovers. I hope you guys can talk and sort it out. You all are amazing xx

      Lorraine I understand your concern that maybe this should be addressed privately. It actually has been addressed several weeks back between myself and Saskia at the rescue. When I saw this skinny pop up in this public video I wanted to say something so that others watching will know that this is not the way they should be kept. While I do not think that Saskia or anyone at the rescue has ill intentions as far as the skinny pigs go, I believe that they just don’t get how important it is that they are housed in a specific way. This is the first year that the rescue has taken in skinnies and I believe there is a learning curve which is something I was trying to help with. Not trying to bash the rescue because if anyone knows me I only have the best interests of the pigs in mind. I have been a part of this rescue on different levels for many years so I do have first hand knowledge of what I speak of. No one is above learning new things, not me, not scott,, not any of the other volunteers and certainly not the founder of the rescue. As responsible rescuers its our job to always continue to improve and seek out knowledge so that we can be the best we can be for these animals that are in our care. If we don’t speak up for them no one else will. Its our job to work TOGETHER, set ego’s aside and do whats best for the pigs.

      Valerie'sZoo 100% agree! No one thinks you’re bashing the rescue! Every day we learn with our animals and always try to educate others. I am aware of what you were trying to do, to make sure other people that might get skinnies don’t view this and then think it’s okay to house them on shavings, I totally understand that was your intention. Im sure saskia and Scott will address this either on this video or to you privately, but it’s all in the interest of the pigs we all can see that. Everyone involved in the rescue and indeed all rescues are doing amazing things and no matter how long we might have had pigs we still must be open to learn and change if necessary for the pigs. Thanks Valerie from another piggie crazy person from the UK

      Yes, the skinny pigs certainly need at bare minimum warm beds/tunnels to be in while sleeping to help keep them warm (especially at night if cooler out). As for bedding, soft bedding would be ideal, especially if any skin irritations are showing up or if they are itching a lot. Fleece truly is best for them, really keeps the heat in and is so soft on their skin.

      The guinea pig was only in that cage temporarily because of a shortage of space, and that is not a pregnancy nursery and that guinea pig is not pregnant and now that we have more space after adoption day the guinea pig has been moved to a fleece cage where she is more comfortable, but she spent the entire day rummaging in a giant haypile.
