Out of a very long catalogue, this remains my all time favorite Tears For Fears song. Constructed perfectly, builds up beautifully with Oleta's vocals, just an incredible performance that deserved a much bigger audience than it received.
WOMAN IN CHAINS IN MY OPINION IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS OF ALL TIMES. IT WAS RELEASE IN THE YEAR OF 1988 BY THE GREAT BRITISH DUO TEARS FOR FEARS WITH THE UNBELEAVABLE COLABORATION OF MRS. OLETTA ADAMS. HOW MANY YOUTH MEMORIES...........................
Odd I always thought it was in the 90's it was released. It definitely feels more of a 90's song than an 80's, Especially during that 89-91 acoustic sound that was very popular.

Sim ... hoje dia 30/11/2024 ...
I've just started appreciating this song. I just saw the video and found myself in tears. So many of us relate, sadly. A beautiful. Truthful. Timeless, song.
I agree. I've liked this song since I was a toddler. My dad told me when I was around 2-3 I would say chains when I wanted him to play it. I apparently found it calming, and only now do I understand the meaning. Sfill a banger.
I can't figure out the video but I think it's two people in love and it looks like the man is very frustrated that he can't pull his girl out of the digs that she does. He seems angry more at himself that he can't take care of her. That's my take but ya, it's a beautiful video and song that will last out the ages of time to peeps like you and me. God bless you.
My Father showed me this song when I was 17. He told me my mother was in a abusive relationship with another man before him. Told me to always nurture women and care for them just as Christ cared for the church. He was crying when he told me that story. Thanks Dad.
Tears For Fears, Oleta Adams e Phil Collins na bateria.
The world we live in thrives on dysfunction and most relationships are exactly like this one here. The woman, the man, both want to be happy, but neither know or understand how to find happiness within themselves, let alone their mate, so they go through life blaming others for not finding the one that makes them happy. Happiness doesn't come from others, it comes from yourself.
Oleta Adams has one of the finest voices of a female vocalist I have heard. I have loved her voice most of my life, and she perfectly compliments the voices of Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal. The Live version of this is incredible!
Oh, God, what a duet!... *Tears For Fears* vocalist *Roland Orzabal De La Quintana* is really a *great great singer* but, without Oleta Adams, this song wouldn't be what it is. It's simply marvelous!...
Sure, I like their big hits, but it's the deeper cuts that really hold my interest. The production, slow build, soaring backing vocals, the passion, the lift, the spiraling, soul stirring blast of it all. Impeccable.
I'd be honored if some Tears for Fears fans would give a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal version of GET HERE IF YOU CAN by Oleta Adams on my YT channel in tribute to one of the great underrated voices in modern music history. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and peace.
I grew up with my father listening to tears for fears. Have always loved them and know many songs by them. Thus song got me out of a horrible abusive relationship. This stuff happens every day to woman. Every time i listen to this song it makes me think about how powerful these words really are. Thank you tears for fears! Will forever be a favorite song.
World gone crazy… year 2022. Woman in chains. So free her…Republican party desires us to be in chains without rights. As said.. “There are wounds time cannot heal”… that time can’t heal… well it’s a world gone crazy, keeps woman in chains” wounds time can’t heal, like young girls or women victims of rape, incest and medical horrors. Vote in November 22. These men… vote them OUT!
One of the best songs ever recorded, in history. Tears for fears was 100 years ahead... so wonderfully different and unique.. God loves us, and this is proof!
Great song to crank up loud! Oleta is killing on this one. They were the masters of restraint putting air to breathe in their songs. But turn them up and there is so much stuff you never even knew was there. BIG love.
Ok I heard this song play randomly on Spotify. I'm 48 years old and this is the first time I heard it. It's freaking beautiful! I always loved Tears For Fears. I listened to the radio all the time but never heard this! Time and music went by but their voices are timeless! I recognized them right away as soon as they started to sing. Let me tell you my jaw dropped. Oleta Adams (what??!) makes this so very powerful! Damn they don't make music like this anymore! These voices are the perfect melodic blend.
We are all this song. Our fears, struggles, dreams, frustrations, ups and downs, pain, courage, the search for peace, success and love. There are millions of great compositions but this piece is a timeless work of art. The elements perfectly located, with the perfect presence and with the perfect purpose. When I heard it for the first time, I went into some kind of catatonic state and wondered "Did I just hear the most perfect song ever?" This is one of the most atmospheric and sonic songs I've ever heard; the sound, the mix, its evolution, its history, its outcome. It's just perfect.
This is arguably the best song they ever wrote. It feels like the zenith of what they were after sound wise and it aligns with the darker areas they often went to lyrically. Also, the modulation at 4:43 is so crucial to the lift of this song. It is so big and so wide. I don’t know who’s idea that was but it just sends the song out into the stratosphere.
Well said. It's the emotional payoff of the song...Roland keening, "So free her" over and over is what the entire track builds up to, and when it hits you feel it in your heart.
This is in my "best song ever" box. Any song, any artist. Always loved that modulation time too. Just something about it sparks that tear in the corner of your eye feeling. Masterpiece.
I heard Roland take about the inspiration for this song. It's about the abuse his mother suffered at the hands of his father. Domestic abuse was part of his childhood, sadly. Such a beautiful song, Roland.
Ohhh my Lord. I had the audio tape of this wonderful album. No need to hear this beautiful song so much to cry and fall in tears almost every time. I miss real music like those. Peace 😇 ❤️ 🙏 😇 ❤️ 🙏
To all the women in chains, past, present and future, know that you are not alone, and know that whether you can find it within you to break those chains, there is always hope. The end of this track is heart-soaring magnificence.
All the above applies to the men who are being abused by women. It is even harder for them to come forward, afraid to admit as woman are the weaker sex.(supposedly).
I have always loved this particular Tears for Fears song, reminds me of my mother living my father, an insecure man who was moody and aggressive, but who loved her, but was incapable of being the man she needed. The lyrics are awesome and Oleta Adams, what a voice. Still makes my spine tingle and I am in my sixties now. RIP Mom.
Sounds very familiar Gerry the way I experienced so called family life ! Now in sixties too ! I heard this song so many times when I was young but never understood it ! I’m free now .
This song is absolutely epic, and it has stood the test of time. 80s music can sound dated, but certainly not here. There is massive production, but it is absolutely perfect and tastefully done. Glorious groove, expressive vocals, complex arrangement, but almost weightless and free - there aren't many songs that pull this off with such style as this. And with Pino Paladino, Manu Katché AND Phil Collins on the drums - what can possibly go wrong? Extraordinaire.
I love pino didn’t know this was him thanks buddy great comment, you would have got more likes if you just said who’s listening in 2020 so respect to you
Just the other day my daughter said dad you were so lucky to grow up in the 80's the music was incredible. She is 23 and loves the music and the passion I have passed down to her.
I love the comments of people having the strength to leave an abusive relationship from these lyrics. ❤️ I also think one of the brilliant things about this song is how three-dimensional they make the abuse by empathizing with- but not excusing- the ultimate foolishness of the hard culture of masculinity. By not making anyone a caricature- him or her- it always made me feel like it had the power to force men to look at themselves, too. At the end of the video, the man here is realizing that he has to change. And she’s absolved herself of the responsibility of fixing him. How powerful on all counts, the video beautifully and simply captured the depth and complexity of the music and these brilliant lyrics.
Regina Williams you are too kind. A friend of mine was just murdered this past weekend by an estranged ex, so the timing of your comment is special. Look me up on Facebook and my most recent post has a link to a group I just created to help me figure out how to boost awareness to men of what women’s reality is in our culture, and how we as men should be evolving to respect it. Thank you again for your kind words. ❤️🙏🏻
LYRICS: You better love loving and you better behave You better love loving and you better behave Woman in chains Woman in chains Calls her man the great white hope Says she's fine, she'll always cope Woman in chains Woman in chains Well I feel lying and waiting is a poor man's deal And I feel hopelessly weighed down by your eyes of steel It's a world gone crazy Keeps woman in chains Trades her soul as skin and bones Sells the only thing she owns Woman in chains Woman in chains Men of stone Men of stone Well I feel deep in your heart there are wounds time can't heals And I feel somebody somewhere is trying to breathe Well you know what I mean It's a world gone crazy Keeps woman in chains It's under my skin but out of my hands I'll tear it apart but I won't understand I will not accept the greatness of man It's a world gone crazy Keeps woman in chains So free her So free her
Thank you! Beautiful and very sad song. Never heard before. I hadn't thought of looking for lyrics and I'd have lost something. "It's a world gone crazy" now more evident than ever
My sister's went to high school with Oleta Adams my sister said Oleta was a very nice person its nice to see someone from my hometown make it in the buisness its a hard road to the top the struggle is real but im glad she made it best wishes to Oleta who is proof " To Never Give up and follow your dreams "

I'm one of those people that never gave their stuff past the first two albums a chance because I wanted more of that 80's synth sound, but I'm really starting to appreciate this. It's beautiful
Lol same here especially Songs From The Big Chair but after I heard this whole album it was stunning production no wonder it took 4 years to make...album wise TFF have 4 of the greatest albums in music history!
Introducing Oleta Adams! Tears for Fears brought her talent to the world.💜 One of my favorite all time songs as they all showcase their vocals. Chills and good feelings here.
I love the story of Roland explaining how they found Oleta Adams! TFF were playing a sold out concert show in Kansas, after the show came back to the hotel, showered and shaved, went downstairs to have some drinks at the hotel bar, had to pay a cover fee of $2.50 per person due to a local musician is playing there tonight named Oleta Adams? Roland stated they had sat at the bar in amazement listening to Oleta, stating it was soulful and she sang with such powerful emotion that some people were emotional enough to shed some tears, as everyone was quiet and tuned into her like no tomorrow. Roland stated her voice was so unique and that TFF needed to bring in that emotion to their band!
In 2019 I was in Minneapolis on a work thing and walking down the pedestrian mall downtown I stopped at a theatre to see who was performing and a week after I had to leave Oleta Adams was on the bill. I have been a fan since Circle of One, so I was devastated i would have to miss a show I’ve wanted to see for decades.
THIS SONG CHANGED MY LIFE. Tears for Fears your lyrics actually mean something... highly intelligent people...big love xx every time I listen to this song I find a new meaning. Whoever came up with the line..."well I feel, deep in your heart there are wounds time can't heal" needs a medal...I have this tattooed on me
I got to listen to this CD for the first time right after turning 59 years old, and even before the halfway mark of this song I had tears in my eyes. this song is absolute truth. I wish I had a woman I could love and be there for, but it never happened, and now I'm too old. but what a powerful song !! tears for fears where the best 80s band without a doubt. I'm going to have to check out their more recent work now, because I have a feeling it's just as good if not better.
One of the most unrecognized and unparalleled accomplishments of music collaboration during the 80’s. The vocals in this song are breathtakingly poignant, powerful, and purposeful. The lyrics could have played out in any type of storyline. This video floats across the screen with storyline fades and band moments that capture the musical theatric that is Tear for Fears. Every time i listen to this song it send chills through my body and I feel like I am “flying”. I so wishes that Tears for Fears and Oleta Adams had collaborated further, Still, the album “The Seeds of Love” features many other vocal collaborations on the album. One of the cinematic geniuses of the video is the fact the final production decision to create the video in black and white allows for color of the storyline and epic signature musical production creativity of Tear for Fears to tear through the “boundaries of color” both metaphorical and practically. The brilliance that was Tears for Fears and specifically the song Woman in Chains will always rank as one of the best songs of the 80’s and the brilliant eternal echoing voice of Oleta Adams was by far one of the most powerful and epic signature sounds during the 80’s and 90’s
This song held my hand and gave me a warm embrace when my Dad was battling cancer and eventually died 10 months after battling it. while I just gave birth to my first born last year. And my Dad never even got to see or hold his 5 week old grandchild in the flesh. This song reminds me of those phases that I went through and somehow helped me cope with that sudden loss. its not even a song he usually listens to, but this reminds me of the time of his death. This song was like a therapist where I can show raw emotions while listening to it. Still listening to this treasure of a song whenever I think about him.Man, I can count the songs that reminded me of him.But this song will always remain special.I miss my Dad Always. Beautiful song, wonderfully arranged. Definitely one of my favourites. Sticks to the heart for years to come. Thank You, Tears for Fears for this wonderful gift of your music.
it resonate with you so much because you were essentially a "woman in chains" in the sense you felt helpless that you couldnt do anything to help your dad,,,,,,,,,,,,,at least thats my take on it! see some of us MEN do have a sensitive emphathetic side ;)

So under-rated
The world we live in thrives on dysfunction and most relationships are exactly like this one here. The woman, the man, both want to be happy, but neither know or understand how to find happiness within themselves, let alone their mate, so they go through life blaming others for not finding the one that makes them happy. Happiness doesn't come from others, it comes from yourself.
😢
Oleta Adams has one of the finest voices of a female vocalist I have heard. I have loved her voice most of my life, and she perfectly compliments the voices of Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal. The Live version of this is incredible!
Oh, God, what a duet!... *Tears For Fears* vocalist *Roland Orzabal De La Quintana* is really a *great great singer* but, without Oleta Adams, this song wouldn't be what it is. It's simply marvelous!...

That's what makes you men
How can you not????
This song is like wine: the older the better ❤
I absolutely love it
Sure, I like their big hits, but it's the deeper cuts that really hold my interest. The production, slow build, soaring backing vocals, the passion, the lift, the spiraling, soul stirring blast of it all. Impeccable.
This entire album is a masterpiece

I grew up with my father listening to tears for fears. Have always loved them and know many songs by them. Thus song got me out of a horrible abusive relationship. This stuff happens every day to woman. Every time i listen to this song it makes me think about how powerful these words really are. Thank you tears for fears! Will forever be a favorite song.

Never too late
You should have been wasting your time on MTV more often back in the day. That would have been the proper thing to do. 😉
But did you like it?

This is arguably the best song they ever wrote. It feels like the zenith of what they were after sound wise and it aligns with the darker areas they often went to lyrically. Also, the modulation at 4:43 is so crucial to the lift of this song. It is so big and so wide. I don’t know who’s idea that was but it just sends the song out into the stratosphere.
Totally agree. It’s poetry on a whole other level
There many but this one is undoubtedly one of the tops
I heard Roland take about the inspiration for this song. It's about the abuse his mother suffered at the hands of his father. Domestic abuse was part of his childhood, sadly. Such a beautiful song, Roland.
Perfection in a song. Just so powerful. Oleta is everything on this track. To me, it’s their best song ever. ❤️❤️❤️

To all the women in chains, past, present and future, know that you are not alone, and know that whether you can find it within you to break those chains, there is always hope.
The end of this track is heart-soaring magnificence.
Ladys if a man dont treat you right please leave, you are not hear for abuse! This is coming from a man ok! Take care of yourself please!
All the above applies to the men who are being abused by women.
It is even harder for them to come forward, afraid to admit as woman are the weaker sex.(supposedly).

February 2024. 1980's music and songs way, way above today's best.
The lyrics of ALL their songs was on point... In my 20's in the 80's! It was the best of times to be alive
Epic comment to an outsdandingly epic song.

The lyrics are brilliant and way before the time!

LYRICS:
You better love loving and you better behave
You better love loving and you better behave
Woman in chains
Woman in chains
Calls her man the great white hope
Says she's fine, she'll always cope
Woman in chains
Woman in chains
Well I feel lying and waiting is a poor man's deal
And I feel hopelessly weighed down by your eyes of steel
It's a world gone crazy
Keeps woman in chains
Trades her soul as skin and bones
Sells the only thing she owns
Woman in chains
Woman in chains
Men of stone
Men of stone
Well I feel deep in your heart there are wounds time can't heals
And I feel somebody somewhere is trying to breathe
Well you know what I mean
It's a world gone crazy
Keeps woman in chains
It's under my skin but out of my hands
I'll tear it apart but I won't understand
I will not accept the greatness of man
It's a world gone crazy
Keeps woman in chains
So free her
So free her
Thank you for the lyrics!

Verdade
