    My LG V20 features the ESS ES9218 Quad DAC via the headphone jack. I hope they don't get rid of the little hole in the future. The phone also has a microSD card slot. It supports at least 256 GB, which is sufficient to contain a fair number of FLAC files. I hope they don't get rid of that either.
    The Creative Aurvana Trio is 16 ohms. The minimum impedance to enable the audiophile DAC on the V20 is 50 ohms. I spent $150 on my Sennheiser HD 598SE headphones, which are 50 ohms. Arguably not high-end, they work for me. I made a custom filter in Neutron to flatten the response, but prefer listening without it. I know, crazy me!

    • @obviyashly
      @obviyashly 6 років тому +1

      BlankBrain first off, there's only one DAC inside the v20 with 4 delta sigma modulation lanes for better audio. Second, the dedicated DAC turns on whenever you turn it on. Anything above 50ohms only turns up the gain which equals more volume. More gain equals higher noise floor. Not a good thing for the audio quality.
      You'll probably need more resolving gear to actually hear the difference between when the DAC is on/off and also to differentiate between flacs and good mp3s for that matter :)

    • @BlankBrain
      @BlankBrain 6 років тому

      I'm pretty sure the "good" DAC and amp are only turned on when ≥50Ω load is present. This is done to save power. The rest of the time, it uses the mini DAC. Unfortunately, you have to root your phone to play 16 bit FLAC files natively.

    • @obviyashly
      @obviyashly 6 років тому +1

      BlankBrain ok no 😂
      Any phone can play 16/44.1 flac files natively. The dedicated DAC on whenever you see the icon. There's no power saving going on because the amp is literally too small to take in noticeably more power than the integrated DAC. 50ohms or greater only turns up the gain of the amp, which is not always a good thing.

    And another question arises in my head, can wireless headphones or speakers be as good in sound as wired ones? I think that would be a little bit like comparing digital to analog, wireless means compression and decompression depending on decoders, wired is straight trough (depending on cable quality/construction). Bluetooth headphones are convenient for sport or work, but hey, with wired headphones you don’t have the inconvenience to charge them, but the inconvenience of cable hanging and tangling around, plus, what are you going to do when battery dies?, are you going to find and replace the batteries?, or are you going to ditch those headphones. I will still have the wired ones if they haven’t suffer any accident or I loose them.
    I think it depends on what are you going to use the headphones for.
    But for me is thumbs up and long live the wire and the rebirth of the jack 😊

    • @StringerNews1
      @StringerNews1 6 років тому

      A few thoughts:
      1. "Wireless" doesn't automatically mean Bluetooth. The packs that musicians use for their IEM setups on stage don't use Bluetooth, or any of the ISM frequencies. I'm genuinely surprised that, given the stratospheric prices of non-pro headphones these days, that none of them are integrating the same kind of radios that they're using for their pro IEM setups.
      2. Blutooth 5.0 with uncompressed LPCM has been out for like 6 months now.
      3. Regardless the radio technology, the limiting factor is still how big and/or heavy a battery pack are you willing to carry around, or what sacrifices are you willing to make to keep the battery smaller/lighter. Don't be so quick to blame blue teeth about compression when all you have is a feeble coin cell powering your light-for-sports headphones.

      I have to agree, technology is changing all the time, and is a good thing, to try to make things better.

    • @25-8
      @25-8 6 років тому

      Carlos Pedrotti I just got these and I’m in love with the sound. They are easy to drive but I think they distort easily at higher volume due to being hard to drive on phone amps.. I have a iPhone SE... it’s also very harsh on not so good recorded tracks like MP3’s. Definitely 320kbps minimum, I’m on Apple Music and Apple lossless diles and it sounds amazing! It is very clear like he says and the bass is fast, I don’t crank it up higher than 80% because they get that loud. I may return these because $150 sounds like a lot but if it was $100 I’d definitely keep them. What is annoying is the mic button, it doesn’t have skip and rewind just pause and play...

    If you like your I phone 6S for music like I thought I did mine. When you step up to a LG V-30 you’ll move up to a whole new level. I compare it to my IFI Black Label amp DAC built into a phone. It easily plays and pushes my full size headphones Sennheiser 650 and 800 The way the iPhone could never do.

    I don't see the big deal with wireless shit, like there really isn't that big of a difference unless you're sitting down and listening to the difference between wireless and not, in which case you are defeating the point of going wireless. When I go out on my climbs, not typically mountains but more rather buildings, I like to listen to music. The problem comes when you accidentally snag your wire when you're climbing and rip your phone out of your pocket or better yet rip your earbuds out of years and ruin them permanently. Now usually my headphones break after the fact, not due to it, but it certainly has happened. Don't get me wrong you'll still hear if the highs are sibilant, or if the bass is muddy, or if the vocal presence is gone, but the main point of this is that tiny difference between 2 different bitrates such as 96k and 192k will not be heard likely at all.

    I remember years ago I was at the store that I got my equipment from and the sales rep told me about some in-ear headphones from Paradigm. They wanted $650 for the "top of the line" unit and I can't remember what the second tier one cost. I couldn't even audition them cause they weren't out yet. I said no thanks. I prefer to hear what's going on around me when I'm outside.

      I was about to say the same thing when I saw your comment. I don't like things in my ears, either, except maybe the occasional Q-tip. (I know, I know, but that is their real purpose. The company just says that crap to avoid liability.)
      I much prefer my speakers, but at work or on a plane I still have a fourth generation iPod and some Sennheiser Momentum headphones. People look at you like you're crazy or have committed some major fashion faux pas wearing those big headphones, and that fat iPod is just too much, so quaint. Still sounds okay, especially playing WAV files.

    I'm sorry, can we use real words? Open is not a sound. I don't go around saying that things sound "milkshake" because that would be stupid. So please stop. Ditto for "bio-cellulose." What other kind of cellulose is there? Just say paper.
    Here's another news flash: not all wired headphone users have nothing better than Apple phones to use at the other end. That's one business that Apple Inc. is not going to dictate the demise of. Plenty of other brands of phones out there, and plenty of other things that aren't phones at all that people use to _just play music_ on! Someone should make it his job to report these trends to the masses...

      @melissamybubbles6139 6 років тому

      Ohh Snaps Thank you for your help. I'm listening on my kids Etymotic. I like the sound but would like something more comfortable and that sounds a bit more natural with stringed instruments and possibly a very little more bass (particularly sub bass) but not much. Or it would also be acceptable to be a significantly more refined version of the se215 with more detail, or somewhere in between Shure and Etymotic. I'm having trouble settling on a favorite sound signature.

    Wired non tracking, non disposable, non cancer causing, no need for sealed batteries, no latency, no drop outs, user serviceable, headphones, good ones at least, will be around long after bluetooth aptx hd, ldac, wifi, chrome-cast dlna is in it's 100th version and landfills are filled with disposable battery powered wireless plastic headphones.
    So until 2100 at least, samsung and LG, (quad dac and pro amp) Essential dac and amp adapter, one plus, and many non apple and google phones still embrace and improve on the headphone jack experience.
    Apple bought beats for $3 billion dollars and need to force everyone over to extremely profitable wireless headphones to make that investment pay off, that is why that got rid of the headphone jack and gave us a ugly easy to lose dongle instead to further make us want wireless. They make a bundle on lost dongle sales.
    Well to add insult to injure and almost force loyal apple customers to wireless beats and airpods and other Professional Apple wireless headphones they are rumored to be stopping including the headphone dongle in iphones, meaning no dongle no included buds and no lower price.
    SO now you must pay Apple to use your wireless headphones.
    Sort of like when the removed cd/dvd drives to get you to use itunes music and movie downloads, or pay apple for an overpriced external unit, and the computer prices did not go down with the removal.
    Funny how there is nothing new under the sun.
    History is repeating itself, and greed is running the show.
    Iphone galaxy and Lg phone user at different time, I swore I would never by a phone without a headphone jack, so Apple has lost a ton of customers like me.
    As expensive as iphones are it should be included, but we all know why it is not.
    I would even pay an additional $50-$100 or so more for an iPhone Apple if it was to include a headphone jack with a DAC/AMP chip inside that could rival LG's V10,V20,V30, V35, G7, smart phones, and 24 bit stereo recording uncompressed.
    I mean is not Apple famous for music, they bought Logic AND Apple Lossless from Emagic, bought a company to get iTunes, they have garageband, and Apple music, yet they do not have lossless streaming like tidal, or any of the latest bluetooth codecs that have really improved wireless quality big time APTXHD< SONY's LDAC, both included on basically all android phones.
    Apple simply does not want to pay Qualcomm the licensing fees, so there customers lose on a great wireless audio, ironically apple itself makes a ton from Lightning and made for Apple licensing.
    Oh well my rant is over, wired will be around until it is banned, because customers will demand it and will not just buy whats available, we have had enough of being told what to use and what not to use, by these tech companies that are just looking out for more profits and not their customers best interests and user experience, they could give a *(W#&^%!%!$ about you.

      As far as I am aware the adapter is quite good, I think he doesnt like the adapter because apple removes the jack and you have to use an adapter. Apple is using a different cirrus logic chip in the adapter, though I am not sure about this info.

      'Just fine' isn't a good enough reason to keep something. Why not aim for something better and more flexible? I think you'll find that now, many other manufacturers have followed suit and are removing their 3.5mm sockets as well.
      To address your comments:
      The adaptor if free with an iPhone...you don't have to buy one.
      Don't lose it and don't forget to take it with you. I find if you keep it attached to the end of your earphones you won't lose it.
      Mine have never broken, they seem to be extremely reliable.
      Finally, the tone of my reply was based on the fact that my question clearly wasn't addressed to you. I don't know why you thought you had enough knowledge of Steve's opinions and intentions to speak on his behalf?
      I'm fully aware there are millions of Android fan-boys out there who think all of Apple's decision are 'shitty' and I'm really not interested. The company seems to be doing fine without your input and if you want to know why they removed the 3.5mm adaptor, read up on it.
      Here's the first link that came up in a search I just did - smartphones.gadgethacks.com/news/what-every-major-phone-gained-by-removing-headphone-jack-0181462/
      Let's just wait for Steve to reply to my original question now shall we?
